ISRO all set for launch of heaviest communication satellite from Indian soil onboard LVM3-M5

Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh) Nov 1: ISRO’s over 4,000 kg communication satellite CMS-03 is all set to be launched from this space port on Sunday.

The satellite, weighing about 4,410 kg will be the heaviest to be launched from the Indian soil and into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO), the space agency said. The satellite will travel onboard a LVM3-M5 rocket, dubbed as ‘Bahubali’ for its heavylift capability.

The launch vehicle has been fully assembled and integrated with the spacecraft and it has been moved to the second launch pad here for taking up pre-launch operations, the Bengaluru-headquartered space agency said on Saturday.

The 43.5 metre tall rocket, dubbed as ‘Bahubali’ for its ability to carry heavier payloads weighing up to 4,000 kg, is scheduled for a 5.26 pm liftoff on November 2.

LVM3- (Launch Vehicle Mark-3) is the new heavy lift launch vehicle of ISRO and is used for placing 4,000 kg spacecraft in GTO in a cost-effective manner, ISRO said.

This three stage launch vehicle with two solid motor strap-ons (S200), a liquid propellant core stage (L110) and a cryogenic stage (C25) gives ISRO full self-reliance in launching heavier communication satellites that weigh up to 4,000 kg in GTO.

LVM3- is also termed by ISRO scientists as Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) MkIII.

The LVM3-M5 is the fifth operational flight, ISRO said.

The space agency had previously launched its heaviest communication satellite GSAT-11 on December 5, 2018 from Kourou launch base, French Guiana by Ariane-5 VA-246 rocket. Weighing about 5,854 kg, GSAT-11 is the heaviest satellite built by ISRO.

Sunday’s mission objective is that the CMS-03, a multi-band communication satellite, will provide services over a wide oceanic region including the Indian landmass, ISRO said.

The previous mission of LVM-3 rocket was the successful launch of Chandrayaan-3 mission, wherein, India became the first country to land successfully near the lunar South pole in 2023.

The LVM3- rocket is capable to carry payload to GTO weighing 4,000 kg and for Low Earth Orbit payloads of 8,000 kg with its powerful cryogenic stage.

The two S200 solid rocket boosters located on the sides of the rocket provide the thrust required for lift off. The S200 boosters are developed at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. The third stage is L110 Liquid Stage and is powered by two Vikas engines designed and developed at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre.

At least 22 killed in store explosion in Mexico

Mexico City, Nov 02: At least 22 people were killed, including four children after an explosion triggered a fire at a department store in Hermosillo, capital of the northern Mexican state of Sonora, local media reported.

The explosion occurred in the afternoon at a chain department store in the city center, according to the reports. Witnesses said the fire quickly spread through the building and nearby vehicles, trapping several people inside, Xinhua news agency reported.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene to conduct search-and-rescue operations and transport the 12 injured people to local hospitals.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by smoke from a malfunctioning transformer.

The explosion occurred in one of the stores of the local Waldo’s chain, after which the building caught fire. Local media noted that those injured had suffered burns.

Authorities in Sonora said the possibility of a terrorist attack has been ruled out.

Earlier in September, three died and over 50 were injured after a gas tanker truck exploded in Mexico City, with 19 of them in serious condition, local authorities said.

The accident occurred on the Zaragoza road under the Concordia bridge, said Clara Brugada Molina, head of government of the Mexican capital, on the social media platform X.

It took place at around 2:20 p.m. local time when the truck, with a capacity of 49,500 litres, overturned, and the injured have been rushed to different hospitals, she told local media.

The accident also affected 18 vehicles, and 19 of the injured transferred to hospitals are in serious condition.

FDA restricts use of kids’ fluoride supplements citing emerging health risks

FDA restricts use of kids' fluoride supplements citing emerging health risks

Washington, Nov 1: The Food and Drug Administration has moved to limit the use of fluoride supplements used to strengthen children’s teeth, the latest action by Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr and his deputies against a chemical that is a mainstay of dental care.

The FDA on Friday said the products are no longer recommended for children younger than 3 and those who are older but don’t face serious risks of tooth decay. Previously, the products have been prescribed for children as young as six months.

The action stopped short of FDA statements in May suggesting regulators would seek the removal of the products from the market. Instead, the agency sent letters to four companies warning them not to market their products outside the new limits.

Fluoride tablets and lozenges are sometimes recommended for children and teens at increased risk of tooth decay or cavities because of low fluoride in their local drinking water. Companies also sell drops for babies.

The FDA released a new scientific analysis Friday, concluding that fluoride supplements have limited benefits for children’s teeth and may be linked to emerging safety concerns, including gut issues, weight gain and cognition.

“For the same reason fluoride may work to kill bacteria on teeth, it may also alter the gut microbiome, which may have broader health implications,” the agency said in a statement.

The agency also sent a form letter to dentists and other health providers warning about the risks of the products.

Those claims have been disputed by the American Dental Association, which has said there are no significant health problems associated with fluoride when used at the levels prescribed by dentists. The supplements can cause spotting or discoloration of teeth due to the extra fluoride, a downside the FDA also noted.

Dentists have warned that restricting fluoride supplements may result in more cavities and dental problems in rural communities, which are less likely to have fluoridated water. Kennedy is also seeking to end the practice of adding fluoride to drinking water throughout the US.

Fluoride strengthens teeth and reduces cavities by replacing minerals lost during normal wear and tear, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. In 1962, the agency set guidelines for how much should be added to water.

Kennedy, a former environmental lawyer, has called fluoride a “dangerous neurotoxin” tied to a range of health dangers.

The FDA regulates most dental products, including fluoride-containing toothpastes, supplements, mouthwashes and rinses. The agency’s actions don’t affect toothpastes, mouthwash or fluoride treatments used by adults or those offered in dentists’ offices.

Ranji Trophy 2025–26: J&K win toss, elect to bowl first against Rajasthan

Srinagar, Nov 02: The Indian Heaven Premier League (IHPL), a T20 cricket tournament being played in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar city, featuring local, national & international players, has run into rough weather with some players being stranded at a local hotel and organisers reportedly fleeing the Valley.

The high-profile cricket event, organised by private sponsors, has run into rough weather after several players reportedly boycotted matches over unpaid dues, leaving the event in disarray.

Reports today stated that the players, who were scheduled to play, claimed they were instructed “not to come to the stadium” due to “technical issues” that had led to the cancellation of the matches.

Earlier, a valley-based cricketer announced that he would not participate in the ongoing league, citing irregularities, lack of clarity on contract and payments.

Meanwhile, matches scheduled for Saturday and today at Bakshi Stadium were also cancelled after players declined to take to the field.

Officials of the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council, a government body, stated that the Council has no involvement in the league, as it is a privately run event.

Sports council officials stated that they had only provided the ground, for which charges were applied in accordance with the Council’s norms.

One player, whose match was scheduled for today, said he was told not to report to the ground due to “technical issues.” “My match was scheduled for today, and when I called my manager to ask about it, he told me not to come to the stadium as there were some technical problems.”

Many international players have already left Srinagar, while many cricketers, primarily from Jammu and Kashmir, remain lodged at a local Hotel.

People connected to catering, bus drivers, and others claim they, too, had not been paid.

They said they are also in confusion and fear they won’t get their money.

The league was promoted and amplified by a well-known Jammu and Kashmir cricketer. The IHPL is not recognised by the BCCI or the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA).

We must remain prepared for war-like situation: Rajnath Singh

"Op Sindoor led to increase in demand for our Indigenous defence products": Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, Oct 27: India must remain ready for a “war-like situation” as the four-day military conflict with Pakistan in May showed anything can happen anytime along the frontiers, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday.

Addressing an event, Singh said that though India gave a “firm response” to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, it should serve as a case study to learn and chart the future course of action in dealing with national security challenges.

The defence minister said the effective use of indigenously manufactured military equipment during the May 7-10 operation bolstered India’s reputation both regionally and internationally.

Singh also suggested that Operation Sindoor led to a situation where war was also “knocking at our doorstep”. “Although we gave a firm response with a firm resolve and our forces are fully prepared to defend the country’s borders, we must continue to introspect,” he said.

“Operation Sindoor should serve as a case study from which we can learn and chart our future course. This incident has once again shown us that anything can happen at our borders, anywhere, at any time.”

“We need to be ready for a war-like situation, and our preparedness must be based on our own foundation,” he said.

The defence minister emphasised that the present-day global uncertainties call for an in-depth assessment of every domain, with ‘indigenisation’ being the only way to deal with the challenges.

“The established world order is weakening, and conflict zones are increasing in many regions. It has, therefore, become necessary for India to redefine its security and strategy,” he said.

Singh asserted that the world witnessed the power of the Akash missile system, BrahMos, Akashteer air defence control system and other indigenous equipment and platforms during Operation Sindoor.

The credit for the operation’s success goes to the brave armed forces as well as “industry warriors” who worked on the front lines of innovation, design, and manufacturing.

He described the Indian industry as one of the most important pillars of defence alongside the Army, the Navy and the Air Force.

Singh pointed out that the government is creating a level-playing field to enhance defence manufacturing and strengthen the domestic ecosystem, and the industry must make full use of this opportunity.

“We’re striving to ensure that the defence equipment is not just assembled in the country, but a real manufacturing base is established to create the equipment embodying the spirit of ‘Made in India, Made for the World’,” he said.

“Numerous initiatives such as the Quantum Mission, Atal Innovation Mission, and the National Research Foundation have been taken to develop a culture of innovation and R and D. Our industry must accomplish what has not yet been achieved in the country,” he said.

The defence minister said that before 2014, India was completely dependent on imports for its security needs, but today it is manufacturing the defence equipment on its own soil.

“Our defence production, which was only around Rs 46,000 crore in 2014, has now increased to a record Rs 1.51 lakh crore, of which Rs 33,000 crore has been contributed by the private sector,” he said.

“Our defence exports, which were less than Rs 1,000 crore 10 years ago, have touched a record approx. Rs 24,000 crore. I’m confident that defence exports would reach Rs 30,000 crore by March 2026,” he added.

To further increase indigenisation, Singh urged the industry to strive towards dominating supply chains while focusing on indigenous manufacturing of individual subsystems and components, and not just complete platforms.

The defence minister said the purchase of major equipment from abroad puts a strain on India’s resources in terms of maintenance and life-cycle costs.

“As a platform contains a large number of components and inputs, indigenous manufacturing of these subsystems can help increase our indigenous content. We must ensure that ‘our soil, our shield’ becomes our first choice,” he said.

The defence minister said the objective should not be merely to assemble in India, but rather to develop technology-based manufacturing within the country. “We must ensure that any technology transfer is effective and also serves as a means of empowering our indigenous industries,” he said.
