CM Omar Abdullah calls for revival of buyer-creator relationship at SKICC meet

Srinagar, June 30: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said that through buyer-seller meets, the government is striving to revive the historic connection between Kashmir’s artisans and the global market by rebuilding the direct relationship between creators and customers.

The Chief Minister, who was a chief guest on the occasion, made these remarks while addressing the Buyer-Seller Meet–2025 held at SKICC, organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Trade Promotion Organisation (JKTPO) in collaboration with the Wool & Woollens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC), supported under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) scheme of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME).

The event was also addressed by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, who was a guest of honour at the event.  Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Commissioner Secretary Industries Vikramjit Singh, Chairman WWEPC R.C. Khanna, Managing Director JKTPO Sudharshan Kumar, president Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry Javed Ahmed Tenga, as well as several national and international buyers, sellers, and other stakeholders were present on the occasion.

The meet witnessed participation from over 100 sellers and more than 45 national and international buyers, representing seven countries and seven Indian states. Over 100 high-quality wool and woollen products were showcased during the event.

Reflecting on the significance of the meet, the Chief Minister said that there was a time when such Buyer-Seller Meets were not needed. “Tourists from across the globe would come to Kashmir and naturally become buyers. Today, through initiatives like this, we are trying to revive that connection—to bring the buyers back and reestablish the relationship between creators and customers.”

He emphasized that the event is not a one-off showcase.

“Under the scheme, we are committed to organizing six regular Buyer-Seller Meets and six reverse meets. These will ensure sustained engagement and provide deeper market access for our artisans and entrepreneurs,” he said.

Underscoring the importance of inclusivity, the Chief Minister urged the Industries Department to prioritise artisans and entrepreneurs who have not yet had the opportunity to participate in such platforms, particularly those with limited financial means. “They have the skill and the product, but lack exposure. If we bring them into the fold, we can address many challenges related to marketing and reach,” he said.

He further stressed that the real benefits of such initiatives must directly reach the artisans themselves.

“We must ensure that no one else takes credit or benefit for the work done by our craftspeople. The recognition and rewards must go to the actual creators,” CM Omar Abdullah said.

Calling for innovation and adaptation, the Chief Minister said that artisans need to modernise—not just in design and product development, but in processes and infrastructure as well. “Consumer tastes are constantly evolving, and if we remain rigid, we risk falling behind. The government is ready to extend every possible support—be it raw material banks, colour banks, or design innovation centres—to help our artisans compete effectively in international markets,” he said.

Appreciating the participation of buyers and dignitaries, he said: “Your presence here is deeply encouraging—not only for us in the government but also for the artisans, entrepreneurs, and all others participating in this event. It gives us confidence and reaffirms that the direction we have taken is the right one.”

Reflecting on the journey and continued challenges, he added that while the past few years seem to have passed in the blink of an eye, many of our issues remain unresolved. “Our artisans have magic in their hands, and I urge all visitors to witness it at the exhibition stalls.”

He noted that many of the exhibits are the result of years of dedicated craftsmanship.

“One piece I saw today took over three years to complete. Some stalls reflect the rich heritage we have inherited, while others showcase modern interpretations of our traditional crafts. This fusion of the old and new is essential.”

In his concluding remarks, the Chief Minister invited visiting buyers to explore the scenic beauty and rich culture of Kashmir.

“I urge you to travel Srinagar and beyond to experience the essence of Kashmir. Take back with you not just world-class products, but unforgettable memories.”

Earlier, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, inspected the stalls set up by the sellers. He interacted with both buyers and sellers and appreciated their participation and efforts.

Gold prices dip Rs 200 to Rs 97,470 per 10 gram

Gold climbs Rs 1,400 to Rs 96,450 per 10 g; silver jumps Rs 1,000

New Delhi, June 30: Gold prices fell Rs 200 to Rs 97,470 per 10 grams in the national capital on Monday due to continuous selling by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had closed at Rs 97,670 per 10 grams on Friday.

Extending the losses for the seventh straight day, gold of 99.5 per cent purity slipped Rs 150 to Rs 97,050 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). It had settled at Rs 97,200 per 10 grams in the previous market session.

“Gold continues to face downward pressure as both geopolitical and economic uncertainties ease. The cooling of tensions in the Middle East and the progress on trade agreements with the US are lowering the immediate need for safe haven assets.

“As countries move swiftly to finalise deals, risk sentiment across markets has improved, prompting investors to unwind safe-haven positions,” Abans Financial Services’ Chief Executive Officer Chintan Mehta said.

Also, falling crude oil prices are easing inflationary concerns, further reducing the appeal of gold as an inflation hedge, Mehta added.

Silver prices also went lower by Rs 200 to Rs 1,02,800 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Monday. The white metal had finished at Rs 1,03,000 per kg on Friday.

Meanwhile, the most traded gold futures for August delivery rose by Rs 520 or 0.54 per cent to Rs 95,990 per 10 grams on the Multi Commodity Exchange.

“In June alone, gold prices slipped by about 5 per cent, showing that some profit booking is happening.

“This does not mean gold has turned weak, geopolitical tensions, like worries about conflicts flaring up again in West Asia, and continued central bank buying are still giving gold good support,” Trivesh D, Chief Operating Officer at Tradejini, said.

Meanwhile, spot gold appreciated by USD 12.06 or 0.37 per cent to USD 3,286.31 per ounce in the global markets.

“Gold remains under pressure, trading near USD 3,300 per ounce, as renewed optimism over global trade negotiations lifted risk sentiment,” Kaynat Chainwala, AVP-Commodity Research, Kotak Securities, said.

According to Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, this week is crucial, with a slew of high-impact US macroeconomic data, including ADP non-farm employment, non-farm payrolls, and the unemployment rate, all of which will provide further direction to gold prices.

Youth Unemployment in J&K Soars to 17.4%, much higher than national average

Youth Unemployment in J&K Soars to 17.4%, much higher than national average

Srinagar, June 30: For the economy of a country or state, youth play a role similar to that of a mason—building, shaping, and strengthening. A decline in youth involvement in economic activity adversely affects a country’s growth and development. One of the key indicators that shows youth are being left behind is the youth unemployment rate which is skyrocketing in Jammu and Kashmir. Youth unemployment is soaring at 17.4K in J&K, far above the national average of 10.2%.

The overall unemployment rate in J&K is 6.7%, nearly double the national average of 3.5%, according to the Baseline Survey Report 2024-25 under Mission YUVA (Yuva Udyami Vikas Abhiyan), which cited the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023-24, The Tribune reported.

The report was released by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday during the launch of the much-anticipated Mission YUVA at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC). The mission aims to create 1.37 lakh enterprises and generate 4.25 lakh jobs over the next five years.
The report states that “The youth unemployment rate is even more concerning at 17.4%, compared to India’s 10.2%, indicating a serious gap in traditional employment opportunities. Women face even steeper barriers, with urban female unemployment recorded at 28.6%, underscoring the urgent need for inclusive economic interventions,”
The report further notes: “Entrepreneurship in J&K is emerging as a powerful catalyst for economic transformation, offering new avenues for self-employment, innovation and regional development. However, the region continues to grapple with high unemployment rates, particularly among youth and women, making entrepreneurship a critical lever for economic revival.”
District-wise, Rajouri has the highest unemployment rate at 9.3%, followed by Anantnag at 8.7%. In contrast, Jammu and Srinagar report unemployment rates of 3.3% and 5.9%, respectively, while Samba has the lowest unemployment rate at 3%.
The report also tracks structural shifts in the Union Territory’s economy. “J&K’s economy has transitioned from an agrarian base to a service-dominated structure, with agriculture’s contribution declining from 28.06% in 2004-05 to 16.91% in 2022-23. Industrial growth remains stagnant, while the service sector has expanded to contribute 63.57% to the economy, highlighting the need for modernisation, industrial expansion and service-sector-driven entrepreneurship.”
On a positive note, the report highlights that J&K has a high self-employment rate of 48%, reflecting strong entrepreneurial potential, particularly in the service sector. However, it also points out that business support systems remain fragmented, with limited access to early-stage financing for small-scale enterprises.

“High unemployment rates among youth, women, and urban populations call for targeted programmes and incentives. Promoting high-skilled, knowledge-sector enterprises can create better-paying job opportunities,” the report suggests.

Despite the challenges, the region’s young workforce is increasingly gravitating towards entrepreneurship, leveraging J&K’s rich natural resources, cultural heritage and growing digital ecosystem

RJD’s call for ‘throwing Waqf Act in dustbin’ sparks political storm, parties trade barbs

RJD’s call for 'throwing Waqf Act in dustbin' sparks political storm, parties trade barbs

New Delhi, June 30: A political storm has ensued over the stirring remarks made by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, at the “Save Waqf, Save Constitution” rally in Patna, with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and INDIA bloc leaders taking potshots at each other over ‘using’ the Waqf reforms as a ploy to win votes.

The BJP called it a brazen attempt by the RJD-Congress-Left combine to ‘influence’ the election mood in the poll-bound state by fanning anti-Muslim sentiments, while the latter vowed to step up the fight against ‘communal designs’ of the ruling party.

BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the Opposition parties of attempting to turn the Constitution into ‘Sharia script’ while strongly reproving the latter’s calls to discard and override the Waqf reforms, claiming that it was doing so in its desperation to secure its vote bank, a section largely comprising minorities.

On the other hand, RJD maintained that Tejashwi’s call to oppose the black law tooth and nail by the INDIA bloc has left the BJP anxious and worried, and hence the latter was deliberately giving the issue a Hindu-Muslim spin.

On Sunday, while addressing a mega gathering at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, under the banner of ‘Save Waqf, Save Constitution’ campaign, Bihar’s former Depurty CM said that NDA government will be unseated this time and when Mahagathbandhan (RJD-Congress-Left) returns to power, it will throw the Waqf Amendment Act in the dustbin.

This created a political furore, with a couple of BJP spokespersons alleging that the INDIA bloc was trying to enforce Sharia provisions from the backdoor while opposition parties hit back at the ruling party, accusing it of fomenting communal divide.

Bihar Minister Ashok Choudhary and JD(U) leader, reacting to the row, called out RJD’s past misdeeds and also its lip-service towards the community, despite ruling the state for 15 years.

“This suits their narrative because they claim to represent the M.Y. (Muslim-Yadav) community. But those from the M.Y. community must ask themselves, during the 15 years of their rule, how many minority hostels were built? How many madrasas were brought under government recognition?” he asked.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh took a sharp jibe at RJD’s Waqf politics and said that the party, which portrayed itself as ‘samaajwadi’, has turned into ‘namaazwadi’.

“Lalu Yadav gave birth to dynasty politics. While indulging in dynasty politics, Tejashwi started calling himself a socialist. In trying to become a socialist from a dynast, he has turned into a ‘namaazwadi’,” said the Union Minister.

RJD was, however, quick to rebut the charges and claimed that the ‘nervous’ BJP was projecting it as a Hindu-Muslim issue to spread hatred.

“Yesterday, when a strong voice was raised from Patna’s Gandhi Maidan against the black law of the Waqf Amendment Bill, the BJP became anxious. Now, BJP leaders are preaching about Hindus, Muslims and spreading hatred. They need to be reminded that this country will not run on the agenda of hate-mongers. This country will run according to its own rules, laws, and Constitution,” RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari said.

Pawan Khera, the Congress party’s media and publicity department chairman, said that Congress and its allies opposed the amendments in the Waqf Act, but the government bulldozed through the legislation in the House.

“The Opposition voted against the amendments. 232 votes were against it, while 288 members supported it. We continue to oppose the Act and will keep speaking against it,” he said.

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, reacting to the controversy, said, “Whenever elections come, these people begin to lure the votes of a large section of the society through communal polarisation. Once again, they are playing gimmicks, aimed at creating communal polarisation and hatching a conspiracy to kidnap the votes of a large section of society by spreading fear and confusion in their minds. But, they will not succeed in this.”

Buyer-seller meet to forge trade bonds, not meant for tourists”: CM Omar Abdullah

J-K: CM Omar Abdullah criticises PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on reservation in recruitment

Srinagar, June 30: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said that the recently organised buyer-seller meet in Jammu and Kashmir is a vital move aimed at establishing sustainable trade linkages for local artisans and producers.

Speaking to reporters, Omar Abdullah said, these events are designed to build formal business connections rather than catering to casual tourist shopping.

CM Omar said, “A single buyer-seller meet won’t transform everything overnight, but it certainly opens the door for new opportunities. We have planned a series of six buyer-seller and six reverse buyer-seller events. This is the first step.”

Amid criticism from some participants regarding the event’s timing, Omar said that it was never intended for tourists. “Let’s not confuse tourists with buyers. Tourists shop on impulse. This platform is aimed at serious buyers from across India and abroad interested in bulk purchasing and trade collaborations,” he stated.

CM Omar urged people to judge the outcomes after the full series of events concludes. “Let all twelve meets happen. Even if one artisan benefits with a major deal, the initiative will be a success,” he remarked.

On the issue of the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, Omar said that complete arrangements are in place. “The Lieutenant Governor has already held meetings with various political and civil society representatives. Security measures and logistics are being handled effectively,” he said.

He said that the first batch of pilgrims will begin their journey from Jammu on July 2. “We are hopeful for a peaceful Yatra and pray for the safe return of every pilgrim,” he said. (JKNS)
