Property of drug peddler attached under NDPS Act in Anantnag: Police

Srinagar, June 26: In a decisive move against the drug menace, Police in Anantnag attached immovable property belonging to a notorious drug peddler under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

A police spokesperson said that acting under Section 68-F of the NDPS Act, 1985, police attached a single-storey residential house belonging to Azad Ali Khan son of Gull Ali Khan resident of Kehribal Ranbirpora Mattan. The said individual has been a repeated offender and is involved in multiple NDPS cases, including FIR No. 68/2013 U/S 8/20 NDPS Act, FIR No. 82/2017 U/S 15/18 NDPS Act and FIR No. 10/2022 U/S 8/15 NDPS Act & 48 Excise Act of Police Station Mattan. The action was taken as part of legal proceedings to disrupt the illicit gains from drug-related activities.

He said the property was identified as illegally acquired during the course of investigation and enquiry conducted by Mattan Police, and was established to have been procured through illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. The offender had been previously detained under the PIT-NDPS Act at District Jail Reasi, Jammu, and has been recently released.

Police reiterated its commitment to ensure a drug-free and crime-free society, and such actions will continue with greater intensity. They urged public to come forward with any information related to drug peddling and help make the district a drug-free zone.

Iran’s supreme leader warns against further American attacks in his first statement since ceasefire

Khamenei declares 'battle has begun' as Iran fires hypersonic missile at Israel

Dubai, June 26: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Thursday his country had delivered a “slap to America’s face” with its strike on an American base in Qatar, and warned against any further US attacks in his first public comments since a ceasefire was declared with Israel after 12 days of war.

Khamenei spoke in a recorded video broadcast on Iranian state television, his first appearance since June 19. The 86-year-old looked and sounded more tired than he did only a week ago, speaking in a hoarse voice and occasionally stumbling over his words.

The more-than 10 minute speech by the supreme leader was filled with warnings and threats directed toward the United States and Israel.

He downplayed Sunday’s US strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites using bunker-buster bombs and cruise missiles, saying that US President Donald Trump — who said the attack “completely and fully obliterated Iran’s nuclear programme — had “exaggerated” its impact.

“They could not achieve anything significant,” he said.

UN nuclear watchdog confirms damage to Iran sites

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog, International Atomic Energy Agency Director Rafael Grossi, reiterated on Thursday that the damage done by Israeli and US strikes at Iranian nuclear facilities “is very, very, very considerable.”

“I think annihilated is too much but it suffered enormous damage,” Grossi told French broadcaster RFI.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, on Wednesday also conceded that “our nuclear installations have been badly damaged, that’s for sure.”

Khamenei has not been seen in public since taking shelter in a secret location after the outbreak of the war June 13 when Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities and targeted top military commanders and scientists.

Following Sunday’s US attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Trump was able to help negotiate a ceasefire that came into effect on Tuesday.

Iranian leader warns US against further attacks

Khamenei claimed the US had only intervened in the war because “it felt that if it did not intervene, the Zionist regime would be utterly destroyed.”

“It entered the war to save them, yet it gained nothing,” he said.

He said his country’s attack on the US base in Qatar on Monday was significant, since it shows Iran “has access to important US centres in the region and can act against them whenever it deems necessary.”

“The Islamic Republic was victorious and, in retaliation, delivered a hand slap to America’s face,” he said, adding “this action can be repeated in the future.”

“Should any aggression occur, the enemy will definitely pay a heavy price,” he said.

Since the ceasefire, life has been gradually returning to normal in Iran.

On Thursday, Iran partially reopened its airspace, which had been shut down since the war broke out, and shops in the capital of Tehran began to reopen, with traffic returning to the streets.

With the ceasefire, life slowly returns to normal in Iran

Majid Akhavan, spokesperson for the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, said Iran had reopened the airspace for the eastern half of the country to domestic and international flights, including those transiting Iranian airspace.

Earlier this week, Tehran said 606 people had been killed in the conflict in Iran, with 5,332 people wounded. The Washington-based Human Rights Activists group released figures Wednesday suggesting Israeli strikes on Iran had killed at least 1,054 and wounded 4,476.

The group, which has provided detailed casualty figures from multiple rounds of unrest in Iran, said 417 of those killed were civilians and 318 were security forces.

At least 28 people were killed in Israel and more than 1,000 wounded, according to officials there.

During the 12-day war, Iran fired more than 550 missiles at Israel with a 90 per cent interception rate, according to new statistics released by Israeli authorities on Thursday. Israel, meantime, hit more than 720 Iranian military infrastructure targets and eight nuclear-related sites, Israel said.

Trump has also asserted that American and Iranian officials will talk next week, giving rise to cautious hope for longer-term peace.

Iran has not acknowledged any such talks would take place, though US Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff has said there has been direct and indirect communication between the countries. A sixth round of US-Iran negotiations was scheduled for earlier this month in Oman but was cancelled after Israel attacked Iran on June 13.

Iran has insisted that it will not give up its nuclear programme. In a vote underscoring the tough path ahead, its parliament agreed Wednesday to fast-track a proposal that would effectively stop the country’s cooperation with the IAEA, which has monitored the programme for years.

New Delhi, June 26: India has completed key phase of Operation Sindhu, with the safe evacuation of thousands of Indian nationals from conflict-affected regions in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday.

Jaiswal expressed gratitude to the governments of Iran and Israel, as well as to neighbouring countries including Jordan, Egypt, Turkmenistan, and Armenia, for their cooperation in facilitating the evacuation.

When asked about the possibility of further evacuations, the MEA spokesperson said future flight operations will depend on an ongoing assessment of the ground situation. A decision on whether to extend Operation Sindhu will be taken accordingly.

World shares mixed as markets take breather after their recent wild ride

World shares mixed as markets take breather after their recent wild ride

Bangkok, Jun 26: World shares were mixed on Thursday and the US dollar weakened as investors caught their breath following recent bouts of volatility.

Traders were turning to US updates on durable goods orders, jobs and consumer spending and what say about how President Donald Trump’s higher tariffs are affecting the economy, analysts said.

Germany’s DAX surged 0.7 per cent to 23,661.67. In Paris, the CAC 40 edged 0.1 per cent higher to 7,565.46. Britain’s FTSE 100 also gained 0.1 per cent to 8,729.71.

The future for the S and P 500 was up 0.3 per cent while that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2 per cent.

On Wednesday, the S and P 500 barely budged, closing just 0.8 per cent below its all-time high set in February. The Dow dipped 0.2 per cent, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.3 per cent.

Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 climbed 1.7 per cent to 39,584.58 as attention shifted to a July 9 deadline for trade agreements to help stave off higher US tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

Japan’s lead trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, was due to visit Washington for another round of talks, with 25 per cent US import duties on Japanese vehicles a main point of contention.

Chinese markets were mixed. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong fell 0.6 per cent to 24,325.40, while the Shanghai Composite index slipped 0.2 per cent to 3,448.45.

In South Korea, the Kospi dropped 0.9 per cent to 3,079.56 as traders sold shares to lock in recent gains.

Australia’s S and P/ASX 200 slipped 0.1 per cent to 8,550.80.

Taiwan’s Taiex gained 0.3 per cent and the SET in Bangkok also gained 0.2 per cent.

In the oil market, which has been the centre of much of this week’s action, crude prices have stabilised after plunging by roughly USD 10 per barrel earlier this week.

Benchmark US crude lost 10 cents early Thursday to USD 64.82 per barrel, though it still remains below where it was before the fighting between Israel and Iran broke out nearly two weeks ago.

Brent crude, the international standard, gave up 5 cents to USD 66.38 per barrel.

A fragile ceasefire between the two countries appears to be holding, at least for the moment.

In the bond market, Treasury yields held relatively steady, and the yield on the 10-year Treasury eased to 4.27 per cent from 4.30 per cent late Tuesday.

Yields had dropped a day earlier after the chair of the Federal Reserve told Congress it is waiting for the right moment to resume cutting interest rates. By lowering rates, the Fed could give the economy a boost, but it could also fuel inflation.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell reiterated to a Senate committee Wednesday that he wants to wait and see how Trump’s tariffs affect the economy and inflation before committing to its next move. He added it’s possible that tariffs won’t increase inflation by very much.

Trump has pushed for rate cuts to help reduce interest costs the federal government pays on its debt and he has sharply criticized Powell for not reducing borrowing costs, calling him a “numbskull” and a “fool”, adding to speculation that he will move to replace the central bank’s chair to seek more influence over the Fed.

That has helped pull the US dollar lower.

Early Thursday, the dollar was trading at 143.79 Japanese yen, down from 145.26 yen. The euro rose to USD 1.1739 from USD 1.1661.

“Traders smelled what this was, an open audition for for who can promise the deepest cuts and the most pliant policy,” Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary.

180 companies of CAPF deployed for Amarnath Yatra security across Jammu: IGP

180 companies of CAPF deployed for Amarnath Yatra security across Jammu: IGP

Jammu, Jun 26: A total of 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), which is 30 more than previous years, have been deployed for the security of annual Amarnath Yatra in Jammu division this year, a senior police officer said on Thursday.

Inspector General of Police, Jammu zone, Bhim Sen Tuti assured a safe pilgrimage to every ‘yatri’ but appealed them to undertake the journey in official convoys if they plan to travel from Jammu rather than travelling independently.

The 38-day-long yatra to 3,880-meter-high holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas is scheduled to start from the twin routes — the traditional 48-km Pahalgam route in the Anantnag district and the 14-km shorter but steeper Baltal route in the Ganderbal district — on July 3.

The first batch of pilgrims will leave for Kashmir from Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar base camp a day before the start of the annual yatra.

“Police are alert to ensure the security of every (Amarnath) pilgrim. Five districts (Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and Ramban) form a circuit through which the yatra passes (in Jammu region). The CAPF personnel have reached here and their total deployment is 180 companies which is 30 more than the last year,” the IGP said.

Talking to reporters after flagging off an anti-drug awareness tableau from district police lines on the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking here, he said they have increased the deployment from Lakhanpur in Kathua – the gateway to Jammu and Kashmir border Punjab to Jammu.

“We have also introduced Road Opening Patrols and also covered the area which used to have skeleton deployment in the past,” Tuti said.

The Jammu police chief said Jammu and Kashmir is a sensitive region and the deployment has been made keeping the requirement in mind.

“My appeal to Amarnath pilgrims intending to plan their yatra from Jammu to join the official convoy rather than travelling independently to the valley,” the IGP said.

Two convoys traditionally leave Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu for Pahalgam and Baltal under tight security arrangements on a daily basis during the yatra period.

On the efforts to curb drug menace in the region, he said Jammu and Kashmir is a border state and “our fight is not only against terrorism but also narcotic business which is used to fund terror activities.”
