Srinagar, Oct 20: National Conference (NC) Chief Spokesperson, Tanvir Sadiq Monday said that there are many surprises for October 24 Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu & Kashmir and that the party will secure all the four seats.

Speaking with reporters in Srinagar, Sadiq, per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that he believes if somebody votes for them he is a friend and not an opponent. “Many surprises will be there on October 24. NC will bag all the four seats,” he said.

He said that the NC will get support in Rajya Sabha elections from the people who are not part of the alliance. “There is also an opportunity for us to win the Nagrota seat this time. Shamim Begum, the party candidate, got a good number of votes last time. Congress will also support us and there are some reports coming that some locals disgruntled with the BJP will also support us. We have also nominated Aga Mehmood for Budgam seat after threadbare discussions. We expect to secure both seats” he said.

He added that they have many issues to put forth before the people and expect voters to support them like they did in the last 2024 assembly elections.

“There is no rift with the Congress and the party preferred the NC candidate for Nagrota as in the last election, the party stood second. We will put our efforts to win all the elections that are being held in the next one month,” he said.

On AIMIM Chief Assadudin Owaisi’s PSA remark, he asked where was he in 2019 when people of J&K were being suppressed. “He was then sitting with the BJP and didn’t say anything. Now, when the time has come to serve the people, he raised his fingers. I want to make an appeal to him to focus on Hyderbad. We have got a mandate from the people and we will do our job,” he added—(KNO)

Alternative places to be identified in Ramban to resettle people in vulnerable areas: Jitendra Singh

Jammu, Oct 19: Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday said the administration in Ramban town would identify alternative places for a permanent resettlement of the population of ecologically-vulnerable places in the hilly district.

The minister of state in the prime minister’s office was speaking at a public durbar, organised in Ramban as part of his ongoing outreach campaign to engage directly with the people in his parliamentary constituency.

He interacted with a host of public delegations hailing from different parts of the district, including villages and gave a patient hearing to their concerns. The deputations aired their grievances and put forth their demands regarding developmental and rehabilitation issues.

“The administration would identify alternative places for a permanent resettlement of the population of ecologically-vulnerable places in the district. The residents of these areas face a constant threat during natural disasters like the recent floods,” the minister said.

He further informed that the restoration work on the damaged stretches of the Jammu-Srinagar Highway is nearly complete.

The public durbar was held in the wake of recent floods across the districts of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ramban was among the districts which bore the brunt of the torrential rainfall-induced flash floods. Roads and other public infrastructure in many villages of Ramban have suffered massive damage.

India on verge on eradicating Maoist terror: PM Modi

Panaji, Oct 20: India is on the verge of eradicating Naxalism-Maoist terror and more than 100 districts freed from this scourge will celebrate Diwali with dignity this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday.

Addressing the armed forces onboard INS Vikrant off the Goa coast, PM Modi lauded the bravery of the security forces, saying they have achieved significant successes against Maoist terror and reduced their influence to just 11 districts, from 125 districts a decade ago.

“It is due to the valour and courage of our security forces that the country has achieved another major milestone over the last few years. This milestone is about eradication of Maoist terrorism. The country is on the verge of liberation from Naxal-Maoist terror,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi said that before 2014, nearly 125 districts across the country were in the grip of Maoist violence and this number has now reduced to just 11 districts due to the steps taken by the government over the past decade.

“Of these 11 districts, only three districts remain under their influence,” he said.

“More than 100 districts are now free from Maoist terror and are breathing in open air for the first time and celebrating a splendid Diwali,” the prime minister said.

PM Modi said there were regions where Maoists did not allow building schools, roads and hospitals, blew up schools and hospitals and gunned down doctors.

“In the same regions, highways are being built, new businesses are taking root, and schools and hospitals are building a new future for children,” Modi said.

The prime minister said that these successes have been achieved due to the penance, sacrifice and courage of the security forces.

“I am delighted that for the first time, people in many such districts of the country are going to celebrate Diwali with pride, honour and dignity,” Modi said.

Anantnag, Oct 20: A truck driver lost his life after his vehicle met with a fatal accident in the Laripora area of Pahalgam in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday morning.

Officials said the accident occurred when a tipper truck bearing registration number JK01AJ-7136 went out of control and overturned at Laripora. The impact was severe, leaving the driver trapped under the vehicle.

Locals and police rushed to the spot soon after the mishap and retrieved the driver from the wreckage, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

The deceased driver was identified as Mehrajuddin Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, a resident of Baramulla district.

Police have taken cognizance of the incident and initiated proceedings under relevant sections of law. The vehicle was later removed from the accident site to restore traffic movement in the area.

Locals in the area said the stretch of road where the accident occurred is narrow and slippery, particularly during early hours, which often leads to mishaps. They urged the authorities to take safety measures to prevent further accidents in the tourist zone.

The body of the deceased was handed over to his family after completion of medico-legal formalities. [KNT]

NC finalises Shamim Begum for Nagrota after Congress refusal

A Muslim Gujjar woman, Shamim Begum won 2020 district development council elections from Nagrota.

Srinagar, Oct 20: After Congress declined the offer to contest the Nagrota seat, the National Conference on Monday decided to field District Development Council member Shamim Begum as its candidate for the constituency.

Speaking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), NC’s Provincial President for Jammu, Rattan Lal Gupta, said that the party has decided to nominate DDC member Shamim Begum as its candidate for the seat after Congress deciding against contesting the seat.

“The party high command has cleared her name and she will be filing nomination papers,” he said.

A Muslim Gujjar woman, Shamim Begum won 2020 district development council elections from Nagrota.

Amid widening fissures between the ruling alliance partners in Jammu & Kashmir, the Congress has turned down the National Conference’s offer to contest the Nagrota seat, stating that it has decided to leave the seat to its ally, the National Conference, in order to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In a late-night development, the Congress decided against contesting the seat, “keeping in view the larger interests and the goal of defeating the BJP”.

“After detailed deliberations over the report of the Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, and taking into account various factors – including the fact that in the last Assembly elections in 2024, which were contested by Congress and NC on a friendly basis, the National Conference had secured second position in the final election results of the said constituency – the central leadership of the INC has decided to leave the seat to its ally, the National Conference, in furtherance of the broader principles and goals of the coalition to defeat the BJP,” the Congress said.

The ties between the National Conference and Congress have taken a hit after the former refused to offer the latter a safe seat in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, scheduled for October 24. The NC had offered Congress the fourth, relatively riskier seat, which the latter declined to contest.

The Congress leadership in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as in New Delhi, is miffed over the National Conference’s ‘reneging’ on its commitment to offer a ‘safe’ seat to the party in the Rajya Sabha polls—(KNO)

China’s economy slows to 4.8 per cent annual growth in July-September, hit by tariffs and slack demand

China's economy slows to 4.8 per cent annual growth in July-September, hit by tariffs and slack demand

Hong Kong, Oct 20: China’s economy expanded at the slowest annual pace in a year in July- September, growing 4.8 per cent, weighed down by trade tensions with the United States and slack domestic demand.

The July-September data was the weakest pace of growth since the third quarter of 2024, and compares with a 5.2 per cent pace of growth in the previous quarter, the government said in a report Monday.

In January-September, the world’s second largest economy grew at a 5.2 per cent annual pace. Despite US President Donald Trump’s higher tariffs on imports from China, the country’s exports have remained relatively strong as companies shifted their sales to other world markets.

Tensions between Beijing and Washington remain elevated, and it’s unclear if Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will go ahead with a proposed meeting during a regional summit at the end of this month.

Xi and other ruling Communist Party members are convening one of China’s most important political meetings for the year on Monday, where they will map out economic and social policy goals for the country for the next five years.

The economy slowed in the last quarter as the authorities moved to curb fierce price wars in sectors such as the auto industry that resulted from overcapacity.

China is also facing challenges including a prolonged property sector downturn which has been affecting consumption and demand.

Ratings agency S&P estimates nationwide new home sales will fall by 8 per cent in 2025 from the year before and by 6 per cent to 7 per cent in 2026.

The World Bank expects China’s economy to grow at a 4.8 per cent annual rate this year. The government’s official growth target is around 5 per cent.

China’s stronger economic growth in the first half of this year has given it “some buffer” to achieve the growth target, said Lynn Song, chief economist for Greater China at ING Bank.

However, spending during China’s eight-day Golden Week national holiday in October was “mildly disappointing,” reflecting sluggish consumer confidence and demand, Morningstar analysts said in a note this month.

There’s room for the government to do more, Song said.

“(We) are looking to see if there will be further measures to support consumption and the property market, as the impact from previous policies begins to weaken,” Song said.

Economists are also expecting a rate cut by China’s central bank by the end of the year, which could encourage more spending and investment.
