Kashmiri climbers crack Brahma Sakli’s Cathedral Dome

Kashmiri climbers crack Brahma Sakli’s Cathedral Dome

Srinagar, Oct 5: At dawn on September 18, deep in the wilderness of Kulgam in South Kashmir, two Kashmiri alpinists clipped into their ropes and stared up at a sheer wall of hard rock. Rising 230 metres vertical rock wall, the feature was known locally as the Cathedral Dome, the crux of Brahma Sakli Peak, a 4,730-metre tower that had defied climbers for generations.

By 1:43 p.m., against whipping winds and shifting clouds, Inayat Ullah Bhat of Srinagar and his climbing partner, Laway Mudasir from Pahalgam, stood on the summit. For the first time in Kashmir’s climbing history, Brahma Sakli had been climbed through a full multi-pitch alpine rock route.

“This mountain was always considered unclimbable,” Inayat recalled, speaking after his return. “The final pitches demanded pure technical climbing. It felt like a battle against both the rock and the elements.”

The climb was not just a test of skill but of endurance. The duo had set off from their lakeside base camp at 5:00 a.m., moving steadily through steep gullies before confronting the Dome. Every pitch required careful belays, anchor placements, and split-second judgement. By the time they topped out, their bodies were spent, but the dream was alive.

The descent was no less punishing. Afternoon storms swept across the massif, rattling their ropes and reducing visibility. By the time they reached base camp again, it was 8:30 p.m., a full 18 hours since they had left.

A Centuries-Old Dream

Brahma Sakli has always carried a mythical weight. Rising like a sentinel at the southern end of the valley, its spires, sharp, trident-shaped rock towers, have stirred both reverence and fear. Old Himalayan climbing journals mention the peak only in passing, usually accompanied by a shrug, “forbidden”, “impossible”, or “best left alone”.

“Even as children, we would hear stories about these mountains,” said Inayat. “But back then, we didn’t have the gear, the exposure, or the infrastructure to even imagine climbing them. We were just school kids going on hikes.”

It wasn’t until the past decade, with more structured training and exposure, that a serious Kashmiri alpine community began to take shape. For Inayat and Mudasir, the Brahma Sakli project became a personal obsession, a way to prove that the Valley’s climbers could match the world’s toughest standards.

A Team of Two

While the ropes and anchors did the mechanical work, the heart of the climb was trust. Inayat led the push, while Mudasir, hailing from the alpine-rooted landscapes of Pahalgam, supported with equal passion.

“Mudasir was the backbone,” Inayat admitted. “You can’t fight such a wall without a partner who believes in the climb as much as you do. On multi-pitch climbs, your life is literally in your partner’s hands.”

Marking Alpine History

The ascent has already begun to ripple through Kashmir’s climbing circles. Multi-pitch alpine rock climbing is still new terrain in the Valley, where most expeditions have historically targeted snow-dome or trekking peaks. The Brahma Sakli climb marked a turning point, the first time Kashmiri climbers tackled such a technical rock face on their home turf.

The Road Ahead

For the duo, this is not the end, but the beginning. Their next goal, they say, is to revive forgotten peaks across the Valley and introduce Kashmir to the global map of technical climbing.

“It’s not just about gear or ropes,” Inayat said, his eyes fixed on future horizons. “It’s about creating an ecosystem where the next generation of Kashmiris can dream higher, climb harder, and know that even our ‘forbidden’ peaks can be reached.”

Brahma Sakli is no longer just a looming spire in the distance; it is now part of a living story of courage, partnership, and the belief that no mountain is truly unconquerable.

Lawyer tries to hurl shoe at CJI Gavai during court proceedings

Lawyer tries to hurl shoe at CJI Gavai during court proceedings

New Delhi, Oct 06: In a shocking breach of decorum, a 71-year-old lawyer allegedly attempted to hurl a shoe towards Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai during court proceedings on Monday.

“Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me,” the CJI, who remained unfazed during the incident, told lawyers and continued hearing the mentioning of cases.

According to lawyers, the incident occurred when a bench comprising the CJI and Justice K Vinod Chandran was hearing the mentioning of cases by lawyers.

The lawyer, who was later identified as Rakesh Kishor (71), a resident of Mayur Vihar here, approached the dais, removed his shoe and tried to throw it towards the judges.

Alert security personnel present inside the courtroom immediately intervened and prevented the attack.

The lawyer was swiftly escorted out of the court premises.

As he was being taken away, the lawyer was heard shouting, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge” (will not tolerate insults to Sanatan Dharma).

According to sources, police are coordinating with the registrar general of the Supreme Court and conducting further investigation into the matter. Details about the exact motive behind the lawyer’s act are awaited, police sources said.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta described the act as “unfortunate and condemnable”, calling it a result of misinformation and an attempt at cheap publicity.

“Today’s incident in the chief justice’s court is unfortunate and deserves condemnation. This is the result of misinformation in social media. It is really heartening that the chief justice of India reacted with magnanimity…. I only hope that this magnanimity is not treated by others as the weakness of the institution,” the top law officer said.

“I have personally seen the chief justice visiting religious places of all religions with full reverence. The chief justice has also clarified this position. It is not understood what prompted one miscreant to do what he did today. It appears to be an act of some attention seeker wanting cheap publicity,” Mehta added.

Senior advocate Indira Jaising termed the episode “an attack on the institution as a whole”.

“I am not an eyewitness to the incident. What I know, I know from what the press has reported. It calls for investigation. I consider it to be an attack on the institution as a whole, not just the chief justice,” she said.

“I do consider it to be a casteist remark against the chief justice…. It requires a legal response from the Supreme Court of India,” Jaising added.

The incident could be linked to the lawyer’s unhappiness over the CJI’s remarks during a hearing last month concerning the restoration of a Vishnu idol in Khajuraho.

A bench headed by the CJI had dismissed the plea seeking directions to reconstruct and reinstall a seven-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari temple, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Khajuraho temple complex in Madhya Pradesh.

Terming the plea a “publicity interest litigation”, the CJI had said, “This is purely publicity interest litigation…. Go and ask the deity himself to do something. If you are saying that you are a strong devotee of Lord Vishnu, then you pray and do some meditation.”

Taking note of the online criticism of his comments, the CJI later said he respects “all religions”.

“Someone told me the other day that the comments I made have been portrayed in social media…. I respect all religions,” he said on September 18.

Srinagar, Oct 06: Member of the Legislative Assembly from Central Shalteng and President of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), Tariq Hameed Karra, on Monday conducted a comprehensive tour of his constituency to assess the prevailing developmental scenario and address public grievances.

Karra held an on-the-spot meeting with the concerned officers of various departments and directed them to ensure swift action on issues affecting locals, particularly in vulnerable and flood-prone zones. He emphasized that development works should be implemented with urgency and accountability to prevent hardships faced by people during adverse weather conditions.

These localities must receive special attention to avert any untoward incidents,” Karra told officers accompanying him.

He further urged the administration to stay prepared for any eventuality and to prioritize works related to flood management, road maintenance, and drainage restoration ahead of the winter season. Karra also interacted with locals who apprised him of their day-to-day difficulties and urged timely redressal of their concerns.

High-mast light at Sonamarg Bypass defunct, drivers urge immediate repair

Ganderbal, Oct 06: The high-mast light installed by the construction company engaged in building the Zojila Tunnel along the Sonamarg Bypass road has gone defunct, causing serious inconvenience to travelers and truck drivers during nighttime hours. The facility, erected at a cost of over one lakh rupees, was meant to ensure smooth vehicular movement and enhance safety in the area.

Drivers said that the high-mast light was installed by the tunnel construction company to illuminate the stretch frequently used by heavy vehicles and passenger traffic on the Srinagar–Leh highway. The area also accommodates a truck yard where several drivers halt overnight during their journeys to and from Ladakh.

However, the light has reportedly stopped functioning for several days, plunging the area into darkness once evening sets in. Drivers said the lack of illumination poses difficulties in vehicle movement and increases the risk of accidents. “It becomes extremely difficult to move safely during the night, especially with wild animals often crossing the road,” a driver said.

The truckers and other road users have appealed to the concerned construction company to restore the high-mast light at the earliest. Locals also urged authorities to ensure regular maintenance of such essential infrastructure, particularly along the Sonamarg–Zojila stretch, which remains vital for both civilian and logistics traffic throughout the year.
