LG Sinha gives emotional push to anti-drug campaign in J&K

Kulgam, June 01: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday gave an emotional and people-centric push to the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan, describing himself as “a member of your family” while assuring full support of the administration in the fight against drug addiction and narcotics abuse in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a public gathering at Laroo Bus Stand in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, the Lieutenant Governor said the anti-drug campaign launched 51 days ago has evolved into a mass public movement across Jammu and Kashmir, with active participation from families, youth, educational institutions, religious leaders and civil society groups.

“I stand before you as a member of your family to support your struggle and your dream of a safe, secure and Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir,” Sinha said while addressing the gathering..

The Lieutenant Governor said the campaign was no longer confined to government departments or law enforcement agencies, but had transformed into a collective social mission involving every section of society.

“With the support of the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir, a movement has taken shape that has united every street, every family and every heart with one common intention—to make our villages and cities free from drugs,” he said.

Referring to the beginning of the campaign, Sinha said what started as “a small spark of change” has now transformed into a larger social movement capable of changing the future of Jammu and Kashmir if people continue to remain united.

“Today I can confidently say that the spark of hope, courage and determination has been ignited across Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

The LG said Jammu and Kashmir has suffered for decades due to terrorism and violence, while drug addiction emerged as another serious threat affecting the younger generation.

“Jammu and Kashmir has endured unimaginable attacks of terrorism for many years. We also saw how drugs were slowly trapping our youth and weakening society,” he said.

Sinha recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan in 2020, following which Jammu and Kashmir intensified anti-drug efforts from 2021 onwards to protect the youth from the combined threats of terrorism and narcotics.

“We tried to remove the shadows of terrorism and drugs that were dividing our youth. Today, the chains that trapped our youth in the darkness of addiction are being broken one by one,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor said the Jammu and Kashmir Police, security agencies and civil administration jointly intensified anti-drug operations during the last 50 days under what he described as a “whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.”

“With the support of the people, we have been able to identify and dismantle several drug networks. Strong action is being taken against those involved in the narcotics trade,” he said.

Sinha said he had observed a growing sense of confidence among the youth during the anti-drug campaign, asserting that many young people were now openly resisting narcotics abuse.

“In the last 51 days, I have seen confidence in the eyes of our youth. Society is standing up against this menace,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor appreciated the role of district administrations, schools, women’s groups, youth clubs, social organisations, religious leaders and political representatives in strengthening awareness against drugs at the grassroots level.

“Many families, schools, social and religious leaders and public representatives are united against drugs. The committees formed by district administrations, especially women’s committees and youth clubs, are playing a major role in this movement,” he said.

Stressing the humanitarian aspect of the issue, Sinha said drug-addicted youth should not be treated as criminals but as victims who deserve dignity, compassion and rehabilitation.

“The youth addicted to drugs have the right to live their lives with dignity. They should not be viewed as criminals. They are real victims and must be treated with respect, compassion and care,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor said rehabilitation infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir would be expanded and assured that modern de-addiction and rehabilitation centres would be established in every district at the earliest.

“The rehabilitation centres have to be expanded and the best facilities must be made available in every district as soon as possible,” he said.

Sinha said the administration had also framed a rehabilitation policy after consultations with experts from across the country to ensure proper treatment, emotional support and social reintegration for recovering addicts.

“In order to save the lives of those affected by addiction, both emotional and material support are necessary and every possible effort has to be made,” he said.

Highlighting the achievements of the anti-drug campaign so far, the Lieutenant Governor said that during the last 50 days, 923 FIRs had been registered under anti-narcotics operations across Jammu and Kashmir, while more than 1,000 drug peddlers had been arrested.

He said authorities had also detained over 56 major drug peddlers under preventive measures, while administrative action had been initiated against several others involved in the narcotics trade.

According to the LG, more than 600 driving licences linked to narcotics offenders have been suspended under the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), while 124 passport revocation cases have also been processed.

“The police are continuously acting against drug peddlers. This is a difficult and ongoing process,” he said.

Sinha acknowledged that the drug menace could not be completely eradicated within a short period but said the 100-day campaign was launched to create awareness and strengthen public participation against addiction.

“We know Jammu and Kashmir cannot become addiction-free in just 100 days. But this campaign was started to build awareness and strengthen the collective resolve of society so that people, police and administration work together against drugs,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor asserted that the anti-drug campaign would continue with full force until narcotics networks are completely uprooted from Jammu and Kashmir.

“As long as even one group involved in drugs exists in Jammu and Kashmir, this campaign will continue,” he added. —(KNO)

Technique, temperament still rule T20 cricket; Kohli proves it again: Sharma

Technique, temperament still rule T20 cricket; Kohli proves it again: Sharma

New Delhi, Jun 01: Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma believes the batting great’s IPL performance in the final was a timely reminder that technique and temperament remain as relevant as power-hitting in the shortest format.

Kohli once again delivered on the biggest stage as Royal Challengers Bengaluru defended their IPL title with a five-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday, extending his remarkable run of consistency in a format increasingly dominated by ultra-aggressive batting.

Kohli struck an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls, including nine fours and three sixes, as RCB chased down GT’s 155 for 8 in 18 overs.

Calling his former ward’s performance “excellent” and “brilliant”, Sharma said Kohli’s innings offered an important lesson for young cricketers.

“That is a lesson for the youngsters to understand that it’s not about power-hitting only, not about hitting sixes only. If you are good with the technique, you can always score big and that is what Virat showed today also,” Sharma told PTI Videos.

“If you have good technique, good temperament… that is what he has been doing for so long for his franchise as well as for Indian cricket. He has won so many matches for India showing this type of batting and he is an example for the youngsters to understand and learn how T20 cricket is played.”

Kohli’s latest title-winning effort came in a season in which he crossed the 600-run mark for the fourth consecutive year despite playing very little T20 cricket outside the IPL.

Sharma attributed that longevity to Kohli’s relentless drive and match-winning mindset.

“He has been a champion player. Everybody knows the amount of matches he has won for the country and that is why everybody admires him because he is a sort of player who likes to win matches on his own and he always keeps his team before himself.

“That is why he is the most loved cricketer in the world. He is the most loved cricketer in India. He is an inspiration for all the youngsters and he has been so consistent throughout his life,” he said.

With Kohli set to return to ODI cricket this month in the home series against Afghanistan, Sharma said the former India captain continues to set benchmarks through his fitness and professionalism.

“Virat Kohli has been preparing so well for himself and he has been an example. He is bringing that fitness mantra not only for the cricket community but for the whole country.

“He continues to inspire all Indian cricketers as well as all Indian people. He has shown by example what he does with his fitness and what he does with his intensity,” he said.

Mumbai, Jun 01: The rupee depreciated 9 paise to 94.94 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday weighed down by elevated crude oil prices as the Israel-Lebanon conflict escalated.

Forex traders said Dollar Index was nearer to 99 levels while oil prices rose to USD 93 per barrel after Israel-Lebanon conflict escalated following sharp weekly drops as Washington and Tehran discussed potential ceasefire that could eventually ease out the disruptions around Strait of Hormuz.

US bombs Iranian military sites; Kuwait hit by drone, missile fire

The United States bombed Iranian radar and drone control sites in Iran after Tehran shot down an American MQ-1 Predator drone this weekend, the American military said Monday.

Iran acknowledged launching a retaliatory strike, while Kuwait said it was intercepting incoming drone and missile fire.

The duelling attacks reflect the fragility of a weekslong ceasefire in the Iran war, which has seen repeated attacks even as American and Iranian officials try to negotiate a deal to extend it.

Iran has maintained its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz in the meantime, disrupting global energy supplies as a fifth of all oil and natural gas traded once passed through the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf.

Meanwhile, fighting continues to escalate as Israel extends its occupation of Lebanon beyond the Litani River and as the militant group Hezbollah continues to launch drones into Israel.

The US military’s Central Command said it carried out the strikes in Iran on Saturday and Sunday around the city of Geruk and on Qeshm Island.

“The measured and deliberate strikes occurred … in response to aggressive Iranian actions that included the shootdown of a US MQ-1 drone that was operating over international waters,” Central Command said.

“US fighter aircraft swiftly responded by eliminating Iranian air defences, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that posed clear threats to ships transiting regional waters.”

The Predator has been phased out of service by the US Air Force, which now flies the MQ-9 Reaper, though the US Army still flies the Predator. The US military said no American troops were hurt in the attacks.

Kuwait, meanwhile, said its air defences had opened fire early Monday morning to intercept incoming drone and missile fire. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in a statement carried by the state-run IRNA news agency that US forces had targeted a telecommunications tower on an island.

The Guard said it responded with an attack without saying where, likely referring to the attack on Kuwait.

Adityanath urges people to protect nature, links environmental conservation to Sanatan traditions

Adityanath urges people to protect nature, links environmental conservation to Sanatan traditions

Lucknow, June 01: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday asked people to actively participate in environmental conservation, saying protection of nature is deeply rooted in ‘Sanatan’ culture and should be treated as a collective responsibility rather than an annual ritual.

In an open letter titled “Yogi Ki Pati” posted on X ahead of the World Environment Day on June 5, he said worship of trees, mountains, rivers and living beings has been an integral part of Sanatan (eternal) traditions and that the Vedas regard reverence for nature as worship of God.

“World Environment Day should not remain an annual formality but become an expression of our shared gratitude towards nature,” he said.

The chief minister said the concept of the three debts mentioned in Sanatan tradition — ‘Dev Rin, Rishi Rin and Pitri Rin’ — underscores humanity’s obligation towards nature.

“Conservation of water, forests, land and the entire creation is the path to repaying this debt,” he said, adding trees are not merely natural resources but living symbols of divinity, life, knowledge, health and public welfare.

Referring to the recently observed Vat Savitri fast, Adityanath said millions of women had participated in the ritual, reflecting the deep connection between Indian culture and nature.

Festivals such as Chhath and the Mahakumbh are also symbols of this enduring faith, he added.

The chief minister stressed that commitments towards afforestation, water conservation and river rejuvenation have become more important than ever.

“‘Jal hai to hum hain’ (If there is water, there is life) is not merely a slogan but the essence of existence,” he said.

Highlighting the state’s environmental initiatives, Adityanath said the inclusion of the Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary has taken the number of Ramsar sites in Uttar Pradesh to 12.

He also cited the success of the state’s “One District One River” programme, saying it demonstrated that nature could be preserved through coordinated efforts by society and the government.

Addressing the youth, the chief minister urged them to become the backbone of campaigns related to water conservation, cleanliness, tree plantation and river protection.

“Youth energy and participation are the greatest strengths for building a green and prosperous Uttar Pradesh,” he said.

He also appealed to children to plant and nurture at least one sapling every year on their birthdays or other special occasions.

Calling for collective action on World Environment Day, Adityanath urged citizens to pledge themselves to protecting nature, conserving water resources and safeguarding trees.

“A safe, clean and prosperous environment is the foundation of a developed state,” he said.

Rasikh Salam, Virat Kohli star as RCB wins second IPL title

Ahmedabad, Jun 01: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lifted their second Indian Premier League (IPL) title after defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) by five wickets in the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Chasing a target of 156 runs, RCB comfortably reached 161/5 in 18 overs with Virat Kohli anchoring the innings through an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes. Venkatesh Iyer provided valuable support with a brisk 32-run knock off 16 deliveries.

Earlier, RCB bowlers produced a disciplined effort to restrict Gujarat Titans to 155/8 in 20 overs. Young pacer Rasikh Salam emerged as the star with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 27 runs in his four overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood also chipped in with two wickets each.

For Gujarat Titans, Washington Sundar top-scored with 50 runs off 37 balls, while Nishant Sindhu contributed 20. Jos Buttler made 19 runs, but the Titans failed to build substantial partnerships and were unable to post a challenging total.

During the chase, Gujarat Titans attempted to pull things back through Rashid Khan, who returned figures of 2/25. However, Kohli remained composed throughout the innings and ensured Bengaluru stayed on course for victory. Tim David added 24 runs, while skipper Rajat Patidar scored 15.

The triumph marked a memorable night for Royal Challengers Bengaluru as the franchise secured its second IPL crown. Kohli once again played a defining role in the title victory, while Rasikh Salam’s match-changing spell with the ball proved crucial in setting up the win.

With the victory, RCB finished IPL 2026 as champions, while Gujarat Titans concluded an impressive campaign as runners-up after falling short in the summit clash. (JKNS)

Palestinian man shot dead by Israeli forces at West Bank barrier near Jerusalem

Palestinian man shot dead by Israeli forces at West Bank barrier near Jerusalem

Cairo, May 31: A Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli forces on Sunday at a concrete barrier separating the occupied West Bank from Jerusalem, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

The ministry identified him as 26-year-old Imad Haroun Ishtayeh from the village of Salem, east of the city of Nablus. It said Israeli forces shot him in a thigh in al-Ram town, and he was pronounced dead at the Palestinian Medical Complex in Ramallah.

Footage circulating online showed people carrying his body and climbing down a ladder that had been placed against the wire-topped barrier, while traffic continued to roll by and a horn blared.

Israeli police didn’t immediately respond about the shooting.

Ishtayeh was attempting to cross from the West Bank to Israel. Many people have been shot trying to cross the barrier, including a 44-year-old father who was killed earlier this month.

Ishtayeh previously ran a poultry slaughterhouse in his home village of Salem, financially supporting his ill father. But business deteriorated as an economic crisis hit the West Bank and he decided to cross into Israel in search of a job, a relative, Nasser Ishtayeh, told The Associated Press.

On his first attempt on Saturday, Israeli security was tight, the relative said. After spending the night with other Palestinians hoping to cross into Israel, Haroun Ishtayeh tried again on Sunday morning and was shot.

“He was directly shot with live bullets and died at the hospital,” Nasser Ishtayeh said.

An increasing number of Palestinians from the West Bank have tried to enter Israel illegally to work in recent years. Tens of thousands of Palestinians had held Israeli work permits, but access was sharply restricted after the attack by Hamas-led militants on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, sparked the war in Gaza.

Since then, unemployment in the West Bank has surged amid an economic slowdown. And around 50 workers have been killed by Israeli fire, with over 38,000 arrested though many were later released, the Palestinian official WAFA news agency reported Sunday, citing the General Federation of Palestinian Trade Unions.

2 are killed in Gaza and 2 are hurt in a West Bank ramming

Two Palestinians were killed and at least 10 injured when a group of people was struck near the port in Gaza City, according to Shifa hospital, which received the casualties. There was no immediate comment from Israel’s military.

A fragile ceasefire remains in place between Israel and the militant Palestinian Hamas group in Gaza.

And in the West Bank, emergency responders said a 17-year-old Israeli girl was in serious condition and a 15-year-old teen also was hurt in what police described as a ramming attack near a bus stop at Gush Etzion Junction.

Israel’s military said a soldier “eliminated the terrorist on site.” It also said a third Israeli civilian was hurt.

Chase master Kohli, accurate bowlers propel RCB to second IPL title in a row

Chase master Kohli, accurate bowlers propel RCB to second IPL title in a row

Ahmedabad, May 31: It was a night dotted with chilling certainty.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru translated their domination from Day 1 of this IPL into a second successive title, and Virat Kohli anchored that five-wicket romp over Gujarat Titans with a patented chase masterclass of unbeaten 75 here on Sunday.

If the Titans’ innings of 155 for eight was filled with trepidation, Royal Challengers’ 161 for five in 18 overs was full of intent and confidence.

And those words are forever entwined with Kohli’s batting and the latest evidence was his 42-ball unbeaten innings.

As he has done throughout his career, the batting super star strode out with an unflinching desire to take his side home.

That purpose was evident in his dismantling of Kagiso Rabada with a sequence of 4, 4, 6, 4, right after his opening partner Venkatesh Iyer handed the South African a similar punishment in the second over that yielded 18 runs.

Kohli and Venkatesh added 62 runs in just 4.3 overs to rain even on the distant dreams of the Titans.

Once Rabada was nullified in three straight overs of his, the Titans did not have enough ammunition in the Power Play, in which RCB amassed 70 for two, to make an impact.

The dismissal of Venkatesh and Devdutt Padikkal followed by the quick departure of skipper Rajat Patidar and Krunal Pandya saw RCB slipping to 91 for four.

But amid this little cavern of chaos, Kohli stood firm like a fort, stopping GT’s advances, and the 37-year-old reached his fifth fifty of the season with pulled four off pacer Arshad Khan.

Tim David (24, 17b) produced a mini storm that eased the pressure on Kohli, who survived a scare as Shubman Gill’s catch off Arshad was found to have bumped on the grass in the umpire’s review.

The champion batter soon so befittingly fetched the winning moment for RCB with a six off Arshad.

The thundering shot also transformed the RCB dugout into a school children’s after examination party.

Patidar, who joined MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma as the only captain to have successfully defended an IPL title, shed his usual stoic face, breaking into a wide grin.

Others around him rushed to the field to gather around Kohli, the beating heart of his franchise since 2008.

But before Kohli put on display his undimmed abilities in white ball format, RCB bowlers exploited a slow pitch to perfection, restricting a lethargic Gujarat Titans to a sub-par 155 for eight.

Shot-making was not exactly an easy proposition on the pitch No. 6 at the Narendra Modi stadium, a mix of red and black soil, and it aptly reflected in the GT batting.

Washington Sundar resisted the trend with an unbeaten 50 (37b, 5×4), but the damage around him was far too big to mitigate.

The fatigue of playing Qualifier 2 on Friday and a delayed departure because of inclement weather at Mullanpur also might have added to their list of woes.

But none of that should not take any credit away from the RCB bowlers who found the correct lengths on this deck.

The Titans needed skipper Gill and his opening partner B Sai Sudharsan to fire upfront to pile a competitive total, but they failed in that endeavour.

A steady beginning was not alien to GT openers but Gill’s swat off Josh Hazlewood (2/37) took the leading edge of his bat to create a simple catch for his opposite number Patidar.

Sudharsan, who was once saved by DRS from being caught behind off Jacob Duffy, did not last long either.

The left-hander’s woeful pull off a well-directed high and wide bouncer by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/29) did not travel beyond a running-in stumper Jitesh Sharma.

Once their two batters, who have amassed over 700 runs each this season, the GT batting lost its rudders, ending an underwhelming Power Play phase at 45 for two.

There was no real fire in the rest of the batters to enact a recovery act.

Jos Buttler (19) and Washington, who brought up his fifty in 37 balls, tried to keep the Titans’ innings together but they struggled to shake off their defensive mien.

The young pacer Rasikh Salam Dhar (3/27), who continued his impressive run behind leaders Bhuvneshwar and Hazlewood, picked up the wickets of an out-of-sync Nishant Sindhu (20 off 18 balls) and Rahul Tewatia as the home side lost the cream of its batting line-up even before reaching 100.

That the Titans had to wait till the 13th over for the first six off their innings — a mighty drag over mid-wicket off Krunal Pandya by Arshad — underlined GT’s turmoil on the night that belonged entirely to RCB and Kohli.
