Fruit growers seek dedicated rail corridor, push for AC cargo trains

Fruit growers seek dedicated rail corridor, push for AC cargo trains

The demand was raised during a joint inspection-cum-interaction between railway officials and representatives of the horticulture trade, who travelled from Srinagar to Baramulla via key stations including Budgam, Pattan, and Sopore.

Led by Bashir Ahmed Basheer of the New Kashmir Fruit Association (NKFA), the growers’ delegation highlighted that inadequate cold-chain logistics and limited rail cargo facilities continue to impact returns for apple, cherry, and other fruit producers.

Growers emphasised the urgent need for refrigerated (AC) cargo trains to ensure quality preservation during long-distance transportation, particularly for highly perishable fruits like cherries. They also pushed for expansion of loading points, identifying Sopore and Baramulla for bulk loading facilities, while proposing phased development of infrastructure at Anantnag, Awantipora, and Pampore.

A key concern raised by the growers was the difficulty faced during last year’s peak season, including delays caused by cumbersome security checks, restricted access to stations, and inefficient handling systems. They called for modern scanning systems and streamlined procedures to reduce turnaround time and prevent spoilage.

The delegation also pressed for expanding the existing cherry parcel service operated from Katra to Mumbai from five days to a daily schedule, stating that uninterrupted movement is critical during the short cherry harvesting window.

In addition, growers highlighted the need for better unloading and handling facilities at major destination terminals such as Bandra Terminus, Mumbai Central, and Adarsh Nagar in Delhi to ensure quicker market access and minimise losses.

Railway officials assured the delegation that the proposals—including AC cargo services, improved logistics infrastructure, and operational streamlining—would be examined. Growers expressed cautious optimism, noting that timely implementation could significantly enhance market reach, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve profitability for Kashmir’s horticulture sector.

The visiting team also inspected orchards in Tangmarg to align logistics planning with on-ground production realities, reinforcing the growers’ call for a more responsive and efficient rail-based supply chain.

Iran’s supreme leader vows to protect nuclear, missile capabilities

Iran’s supreme leader vows to protect nuclear, missile capabilities

Dubai, Apr 30: Iran’s supreme leader said Thursday that the Islamic Republic will protect its “nuclear and missile capabilities” as a national asset, likely seeking to draw a hard line as US President Donald Trump presses for a wider deal to cement the war’s shaky three-week ceasefire.

Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei maintained the defiant tone he has struck since taking over as supreme leader following the killing of his father in the war’s opening airstrikes.

In a written statement read by a state television anchor, Khamenei — who has not been seen in public since becoming supreme leader — said the only place Americans belonged in the Persian Gulf is “at the bottom of its waters” and that a “new chapter” was being written in the region’s history.

His remarks come as Iran’s oil industry is being squeezed by a US Navy blockade halting its oil tankers from getting out to sea. But the world economy is also under pressure as Iran maintains its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of all crude oil is transported.

On Thursday, the global benchmark for oil, Brent crude, traded as high as $126 a barrel.

That shock to oil supplies and prices is putting pressure on Trump, who on Thursday floated a new plan to reopen Strait of Hormuz.

Under the plan, the United States would continue its blockade on Iranian ports, while coordinating with allies to impose higher costs on Iran’s attempts to subvert the free flow of energy, according to a senior administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.

The official added that it is just one of multiple diplomatic and policy efforts that Trump is weighing.

With a fragile ceasefire in place, the US and Iran are locked in a standoff over the strait. The US blockade is designed to prevent Iran from selling its oil, depriving it of crucial revenue while also potentially creating a situation where Tehran has to shut off production because it has nowhere to store oil.

The strait’s closure is also problem for the US’ Gulf allies, which use the waterway to export their oil and gas.

A recent Iranian proposal would push negotiations on the country’s nuclear program to a later date. Trump said one of the major reasons he went to war was to deny Iran the ability to develop nuclear weapons. Iran long has maintained its program is peaceful, though it enriched uranium at near-weapons-grade levels of 60%.

Pakistan on Thursday said it was still facilitating indirect talks between the US and Iran aimed at easing tensions, but Islamabad would also welcome direct communication between the two sides, even by phone.

“If the two parties can engage in real-time conversations, that could ease the sticking points,” said Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Tahir Andrabi at a weekly news briefing. He declined to share details of any Iranian or US proposals.

Speaking to mark Persian Gulf Day in Iran, Khamenei’s remarks signaled that nuclear issues and Iran’s ballistic missile program wouldn’t be traded away.

“Ninety million proud and honorable Iranians inside and outside the country regard all of Iran’s identity-based, spiritual, human, scientific, industrial and technological capacities — from nanotechnology and biotechnology to nuclear and missile capabilities — as national assets, and will protect them just as they protect the country’s waters, land and airspace,” Khamenei said.

Khamenei referred to America as the “Great Satan,” a long hurled insult by Iranian leaders toward the US since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. He said Americans should have no business in the Persian Gulf.

“Foreigners who come from thousands of kilometres away to act with greed and malice there have no place in it — except at the bottom of its waters,” said Khamenei, who was reportedly was wounded in the Feb 28 attack that killed his father, the 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,

In his remarks, Khamenei seemed to signal Iran would maintain its control over the waterway, which sits in the territorial waters of Iran and Oman. Iran had been charging some ships reportedly $2 million apiece to travel through the strait.

He said that Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz will make the Gulf more secure, and that Tehran’s “legal rules and new management” of the strait will benefit all the region’s nations.

However, the world considered the strait an international waterway, open to all without paying tolls. Gulf Arab nations, chief among them the United Arab Emirates, have decried Iran’s control of the strait as akin to piracy.

Narco-smuggling no less than terrorism: J-K LG

Narco-smuggling no less than terrorism: J-K LG

Jammu, Apr 30: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today ignited the Drug-Free Jammu Kashmir Campaign in Doda, rallying citizens against narcotics.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Lieutenant Governor said the people’s movement against drug abuse reflects their determination and unity, and this menace can be eliminated when communities rise together and speak with one voice.

The Lieutenant Governor said that narcotics smuggling is no less than terrorism and those involved will be given stringent punishment.

“I firmly believe that drug abuse is a form of silent terrorism, not merely a matter of law and order. The smuggling of narcotics represents terrorism in disguise. It is a hidden threat that devastates our youth, weakens families, and undermines the very foundations of society.

We have decided that drug traffickers in Jammu Kashmir will be treated under the law the same way terrorists are. They are enemies of society, enemies of humanity and enemies of our youth. We are committed to wiping out this threat,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

He also stated that every drug smuggler, every local peddler, every member of a drug syndicate working to destroy society will be identified and put behind bars.

“I give you my word: we will not rest until the networks spreading this poison are completely dismantled,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

Lieutenant Governor observed that path to success in this campaign is demanding, and the challenge is significant. He said of the 100-day effort, 80 days remain and each day is now vital.
“Every moment must be used with purpose, and every citizen must take part in this Jan-Andolan. Together, we can make Jammu Kashmir a shining example for the nation: a society free from the burden of drug addiction,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

In his address, the Lieutenant Governor also underscored the importance of Jan-Bhagidari and said that this fight cannot rest on government machinery alone and society must actively participate.

“In the remaining 80 days, a whole-of-government effort must confront and dismantle the web of drug addiction. This requires a change in mindset. Sometimes people say this is not my problem. This attitude must change. Drug smugglers thrive on public indifference and silence. We must remember: a drug-free society is built by those who resist this menace even when they are not directly affected. Every family must recognize that prosperity is not measured by economic growth alone, but by the vigilant and responsible choices of its citizens,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted that with the public support, in just the last 20 days around 350 FIRs were registered and 440 drug traffickers were arrested. He also called upon schools, colleges, social organizations, and the media to join this campaign.

“When communities stay alert, they can resist infiltration. When society is vigilant, addiction cannot spread,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

MP Mian Altaf urges Railway Minister to consider Vande Bharat stop at Anantnag Station

Srinagar, Apr 30: Member of Parliament Anantnag–Rajouri, Mian Altaf Ahmad on Thursday welcomed the extension of Vande Bharat Express from Jammu-Srinagar while demanding Vande Bharat stop at Anantnag station.

In a statement, Mian Altaf Ahmad said, “the extension of Vande Bharat is a welcome step however I urge the Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting that Anantnag Railway Station be included as a scheduled stop for the Vande Bharat Express.”

Mian Altaf said that he has earlier requested the Railways  Minister to consider the addition of a halt of Vande Bharat at Anantnag station adding that I again remind and request the Railways minister to consider this demand in the larger interest of the people.

Mian Altaf described the launch of the extended Vande Bharat Express as a milestone connecting the Valley to the national rail network, but expressed concern over the absence of a halt at Anantnag, calling it an inconvenience for South Kashmir residents.

The MP highlighted that while Banihal primarily functions as a transit point, Anantnag handles a large permanent population including students, traders, professionals, and government employees.

“Providing a stoppage at Anantnag would ensure equitable access to premium rail services for South Kashmir, which has a larger catchment area ,” he added.

The MP urged the Railway Minister to direct authorities to designate Anantnag as an official stop at the earliest, adding that the move would be welcomed by South Kashmir residents and mark another people-focused initiative of the Ministry.

Trump first living President on passport in special anniversary release

Trump first living President on passport in special anniversary release

In an unprecedented and controversial move, President Donald Trump’s image is set to appear on a specially designed American passport to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, which falls in July this year.

These commemorative passports will feature his portrait alongside the Declaration of Independence, with a gold-embossed presidential signature on the inside pages. The special passports will be issued in limited numbers as part of the broader “America250” celebrations.

This development is historically significant, as it marks the first time a living U.S. president’s image has appeared in a passport design, even in a commemorative format.

The U.S. Treasury Department has also announced that President Trump’s signature will appear on newly issued dollar bills, beginning with high-denomination notes. This represents a major break from long-standing tradition: since the introduction of federally issued paper currency in 1861, U.S. banknotes have carried only the signatures of the Treasury Secretary and Treasurer, not the sitting president.

It is the first time in over 165 years that a sitting president’s signature will be printed on U.S. currency. Together, these measures—Trump’s image on commemorative passports and his signature on U.S. currency—represent a significant departure from established American norms.

Trump’s image will appear alongside the Declaration of Independence and opposite an image of the Founding Fathers.

The limited-edition documents, billed as a commemoration of the U.S.’s 250th anniversary of independence, will display Trump’s photograph on the inside cover, surrounded by the text of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. flag, with his signature rendered in gold. A separate page will feature the famous painting of the Founding Fathers signing the document.

For comparison, Queen Elizabeth II holds the record for appearing on the most currencies, with her portrait featured on over 30 currencies during her reign, including those of the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

While monarchs’ portraits are commonly printed on currencies in many nations, leaders such as George Washington, Mahatma Gandhi, and Mao Zedong have also appeared on banknotes in their respective countries.

The themed passports will only be available through in-person appointments in Washington, subject to availability. Officials said the passports would be issued at no additional cost.

It was not immediately clear whether applicants could opt out of the Trump image, although most Americans apply for passports through local post offices, which are unlikely to provide the special edition.

Vaishnaw flags off Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat, services from May 2

Vaishnaw flags off Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat, services from May 2

Srinagar, Apr 30: Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday flagged off the 20-coach Vande Bharat Express train between Jammu and Srinagar, the first direct train between the twin capitals of Jammu and Kashmir.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Jitendra Singh, were among the dignitaries present at the flagging off ceremony.

The direct train services between Srinagar and Jammu will reduce travel time between the twin capitals of Jammu and Kashmir, and boost tourism, besides providing an all-weather surface transport link.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first direct train service between Katra and Srinagar on June 6, 2025. This service is now being extended up to the Jammu Tawi Railway Station.

The work on the Rs 43,780-crore rail project, linking Kashmir to the rest of the country, began in the late 1990s, with the first train operating in the Kashmir Valley in October 2008.

While train services had reached Udhampur by 2005, the treacherous terrain through the mountainous Pir Panjal range made it tough to link the valley with the rest of the country until 2025.

“The modern 20-coach Vande Bharat train will commence its maiden journey from Jammu Tawi, traversing the route up to Srinagar while connecting the challenging geographical terrains of the Valley,” an official said, adding that a train from Srinagar has also started moving towards Jammu simultaneously.

Before the commencement of the Jammu-Srinagar service, a trial run of the Vande Bharat was conducted on Tuesday from Jammu to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway stations, officials said.

The inaugural Vande Bharat train, equipped with state-of-the-art amenities and comprising 20 coaches, will cover a total distance of 267 kilometres.

The Jammu-Srinagar train service — scheduled to start on May 2 — will operate six days a week. There will be no train service on this route on Tuesdays.

“Constructed using indigenous technology, this Vande Bharat Express will offer passengers a world-class travel experience,” Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal said.

“It features amenities such as the ‘Kavach’ safety system for passenger security, a GPS-based information system, and comfortable rotating seats. This service will not only reduce travel time but also provide a massive boost to the local economy and tourism,” he added.

The extension of the Vande Bharat to Jammu Tawi is the latest milestone in a decade-long effort to transform railway connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir.

The Udhampur-Katra section was commissioned in 2014. The Kashmir Valley saw its first electric train in February 2024, while a dedicated Jammu Railway Division was created in January 2025.

Stations at Jammu Tawi, Katra, Udhampur, and Budgam are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, built at a total cost of Rs 43,780 crore with 36 tunnels spanning 119 km and 943 bridges, is the connective tissue that makes all of this possible, an official said.
