ICC chair Jay Shah extends best wishes to SA & Australia

New Delhi, Jun 10: As the World Test Championship (WTC) final is set to begin on Wednesday, where South Africa and Australia will fight for the coveted mace, the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah expressed his excitement for the “enthralling contest” and gave his best wishes to both teams for the “Ultimate Test.”

Pat Cummins-led Australia will be looking to retain the mace that they claimed after defeating India in the previous edition of the World Test Championship Final at the Oval in June 2023. On the other side, South Africa are aiming for their first ICC trophy in over two decades, with Temba Bavuma leading the charge.

Taking to X, Shah wrote, “Looking forward to an enthralling contest in the @ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s. Best of luck to both @ProteasMenCSA and @CricketAus in the Ultimate Test!”

The winner of the WTC 2023-25 will walk away with USD 3.6 million, a significant jump from the USD 1.6 million awarded in both 2021 and 2023, while the runners-up will earn USD 2.16 million, up from USD 800,000.

South Africa’s WTC journey started with a 1-1 drawn series against India at home before being handed a 2-0 series defeat by New Zealand. They then travelled to the West Indies, winning 1-0, before picking up pace with 2-0 wins against both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Then, their thrilling two-wicket win against Pakistan at Centurion was enough to help them seal their berth in the final. They went on to win the series 2-0 against Pakistan, earning their seventh consecutive Test win in this cycle to qualify for the final as table toppers.

The ICC No. 1 ranked Australia started their journey to the WTC Final with two Ashes wins before England’s comeback to draw the series 2-2, followed by a clean sweep at home, winning three tests against Pakistan.

Aussies were dropped to the second spot in the WTC standings after the Test series against the West Indies ended in a 1-1 draw. Then, a 2-0 sweep away from home against New Zealand followed. Australia then hosted India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which they claimed 3-1 after 10 years.

US, China say they have agreed on framework to resolve their trade disputes

US calls out China's unfair trade practices as 28 textile plants shut down

London, June 11:  Senior US and Chinese negotiators have agreed on a framework to get their trade negotiations back on track after a series of disputes that threatened to derail them, both sides have said.

The announcement came at the end of two days of talks in the British capital that wrapped up late Tuesday.

The meetings appeared to focus on finding a way to resolve disputes over mineral and technology exports that had shaken a fragile truce on trade reached in Geneva last month. It’s not clear whether any progress was made on the more fundamental differences over China’s sizeable trade surplus with the United States.

“First we had to get sort of the negativity out and now we can go forward,” US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told reporters after the meetings.

Asian stock markets rose Wednesday after the agreement was announced.

The talks followed a phone call between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping last week to try to calm the waters.

Li Chenggang, a vice minister of commerce and China’s international trade representative, said the two sides had agreed in principle on a framework for implementing the consensus reached on the phone call and at the talks on Geneva, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Further details, including any plans for a potential next round of talks, were not immediately available.

Li and Wang Wentao, China’s commerce minister, were part of the delegation led by Vice Premier He Lifeng. They met with Lutnick, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at Lancaster House, a 200-year-old mansion near Buckingham Palace.

Wendy Cutler, a former US trade negotiator, said the disputes had frittered away 30 of the 90 days the two sides have to try to resolve their disputes.

They agreed in Geneva to a 90-day suspension of most of the 100 per cent-plus tariffs they had imposed on each other in an escalating trade war that sparked fears of recession. The World Bank, citing a rise in trade barriers, cut its projections Tuesday for US and global economic growth this year.

“The US and China lost valuable time in restoring their Geneva agreements,” said Cutler, now vice president at the Asia Society Policy Institute. “Now, only sixty days remain to address issues of concern, including unfair trade practices, excess capacity, transshipment and fentanyl.”

Since the Geneva talks, the US and China have exchanged angry words over advanced semiconductors that power artificial intelligence, visas for Chinese students at American universities and rare earth minerals that are vital to carmakers and other industries.

China, the world’s biggest producer of rare earths, has signalled it may speed up the issuing of export licenses for the elements. Beijing, in turn, wants the US to lift restrictions on Chinese access to the technology used to make advanced semiconductors.

Lutnick said that resolving the rare earths issue is a fundamental part of the agreed-upon framework, and that the US will remove measures it had imposed in response. He did not specify which measures.

“When they approve the licenses, then you should expect that our export implementation will come down as well,” he said.

Cutler said it would be unprecedented for the US to negotiate on its export controls, which she described as an irritant that China has been raising for nearly 20 years.

“By doing so, the US has opened a door for China to insist on adding export controls to future negotiating agendas,” she said.

In Washington, a federal appeals court agreed Tuesday to let the government keep collecting tariffs that Trump has imposed not just on China but also on other countries worldwide while the administration appeals a ruling against his signature trade policy.

Trump said earlier that he wants to “open up China,” the world’s dominant manufacturer, to US products.

“If we don’t open up China, maybe we won’t do anything,” Trump said at the White House. “But we want to open up China.”

India’s population reaches 1.46 billion, sees decline in fertility rate: UN

New Delhi, June 11: While India continues to be the most populous country, with an estimated 1.46 billion people in 2025, the country’s total fertility rate has fallen to 1.9, below the replacement level of 2.1, according to the latest report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) released on Tuesday.

The 2025 State of World Population (SOWP) report underscores that the real crisis lies not in population size, but in the widespread challenges to support individuals’ right to decide freely and responsibly if, when, and how many children to have.

The UN report estimates “India’s population at present at 1,463.9 million”.

“India is now the world’s most populous nation, with nearly 1.5 billion people — a number expected to grow to about 1.7 billion before it begins falling,” the report said.

The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in India is currently 2.0 children per woman. This means that on average, a woman in India would be expected to have 2 children during her childbearing years (typically ages 15-49). This rate has remained constant since 2020, according to the Sample Registration System (SRS) report for 2021.

However, the new report showed it has declined to 1.9 births per woman, which means that, on average, Indian women are having fewer children than needed to maintain the population size from one generation to the next, without migration.

Despite the slowing birth rate, India’s youth population remains significant, with 24 per cent in the age bracket of 0-14, 17 per cent in 10-19, and 26 per cent in 10-24.

While 68 per cent of the population accounts for the 15-64 age bracket, the elderly population (65 and older) stands at seven per cent.

As of 2025, life expectancy at birth is projected to be 71 years for men and 74 years for women.

The UN report also placed India in a group of middle-income countries undergoing rapid demographic change, with the population doubling time now estimated at 79 years.

“India has made significant progress in lowering fertility rates — from nearly five children per woman in 1970 to about two today — thanks to improved education and access to reproductive healthcare,” said Andrea M. Wojnar, UNFPA India Representative.

“This has led to major reductions in maternal mortality, meaning million more mothers are alive today, raising children and building communities,” Wojnar added.

Restoring constitutional rights in J&K will empower people to fight terrorism: CPI (M)

Restoring constitutional rights in J&K will empower people to fight terrorism: CPI (M)

Srinagar, June 11: Highlighting that people from all walks of life in Kashmir Valley had strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack, CPI (M) General Secretary Mariam Alexander Baby on Wednesday said that “restoring Constitutional rights in Jammu and Kashmir will help people to fight terrorism”.

Addressing a large gathering of party workers at Tagore Hall here during a convention organised by CPI (M) J&K, MA Baby said “abrogation of Article 370 has distorted the historical importance of J&K.”

“The way special status in J&K was diluted came as a shot in the arm for terrorists. With attacks such as the Pahalgam incident, they want to divide the society. Need of the hour is to empower people in J&K by returning their special status so that they can fight terrorism,” said MA Baby.

He said it was ironic that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stated that the situation in Kashmir was normal after abrogation of Article 370. “We were in Kashmir for a two-day Parliamentary delegation visit. What we saw with our own eyes was miseries of the residents of border areas affected by cross-border shelling”. “It is not fair on the part of the Home Minister to describe the situation as normal,” said the CPI (M) veteran leader.

He said the party delegation on a visit to Kashmir comprised of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha members, who visited the shelling affected villages in Uri and besides met family of the slain civilian Syed Adil from Ashmuqam, who was killed in the Pahalgam incident while trying to save tourists. MA Baby underlined the need for a discussion in the Parliament over the Pahalgam attack and the subsequent incidents that followed.

“It is the duty of the Parliament to discuss people-centric issues but the current dispensation at the Centre is not allowing such a discussion to happen. PM Modi should address the Parliament and open up the House for a discussion on the recent happenings in the country such as the Pahalgam attack and aftermath,” said MA Baby.

The CPI (M) leader said it was “deplorable” that J&K was “downgraded to a UT with its Chief Minister not even being a part of the important security review meetings.” “You have an elected government in J&K but unfortunately the law and order is not under the purview of CM Omar Abdullah. These fissures in the establishment bolsters terrorists who then strike as per their will and wish,” he said.

Among other senior CPI (M) leader Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami and former General Secretary of the CPI (M) Ghulam Nabi Malik highlighted that the party’s central leadership had always extended support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The senior leaders said this time around the motive of holding a convention in Srinagar was to safeguard rights of people in J&K. “It is heartening to see the veterans of our party visit Kashmir and share our grief,” said Malik.

Comrade Amra Ram, Member of Parliament (MP) from Rajasthan’s Sikar and a senior CPI (M) leader said the Rs 1.30 lakh compensation to the shelling affected people in border areas was a paltry amount. The Sikar MP, who was recently included in the CPI (M) Politburo said the BJP-led government in the Centre had “failed to fulfill its promise of providing jobs to lakhs of people.”

“Instead, the central government has empowered Adani and Ambani,” he lamented. He said in the past growth and development of states has been witnessed, adding that it was “shocking that a state such as J&K was downgraded into a UT.”

UK, others sanction 2 far-right Israeli Cabinet ministers over violence in occupied West Bank

UK, others sanction 2 far-right Israeli Cabinet ministers over violence in occupied West Bank

Jerusalem, Jun 10: Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Norway said Tuesday they have imposed sanctions on two far-right Israeli government ministers for allegedly “inciting extremist violence” against Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The decision by Western governments friendly to Israel was a sharp rebuke of Israel’s settlement policies in the West Bank and of settler violence, which has spiked since Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack ignited the war in the Gaza Strip.

Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, key partners in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, are champions of Israeli settlement who support continuing the war in Gaza, facilitating what they call the voluntary emigration of its Palestinian population and the rebuilding of Jewish settlements there.

They could now face asset freezes and travel bans.

The five countries’ foreign ministers said in a joint statement that Ben-Gvir and Smotrich “have incited extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights. Extremist rhetoric advocating the forced displacement of Palestinians and the creation of new Israeli settlements is appalling and dangerous.”

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the two men “have been inciting violence against Palestinian people for months and months and months” and “encouraging egregious abuses of human rights.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said earlier it had been informed of the sanctions.

Smotrich, the finance minister, wrote on social media that he learned of the sanctions while he was inaugurating a new West Bank settlement. “We are determined to continue building,” he said.

“We overcame Pharoah, we’ll overcome Starmer’s Wall.” Ben-Gvir, the national security minister, wrote on social media, referring to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called the sanctions decision “outrageous.” He said he had discussed it with Netanyahu and they would meet next week to discuss Israel’s response.

Netanyahu is the target of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court last year over alleged war crimes in Gaza, part of a global wave of outrage at Israel’s conduct during its 20-month war against Hamas. Netanyahu has denied the allegations and accused the the court of being biased against Israel.

The Biden administration took the rare step of sanctioning radical Israeli settlers implicated in violence in the occupied West Bank — sanctions that were lifted by President Donald Trump.

Eitay Mack, an Israeli human rights lawyer who spent years campaigning for the sanctions on Smotrich and Ben-Gvir — along with violent West Bank settlers — described Tuesday’s move as “historic.”

“It means the wall of immunity that Israeli politicians had has been broken,” he said. “It’s unbelievable that it took so long for Western governments to sanction Israeli politicians, and the fact that it’s being done while Trump is president is quite amazing.”

Mack added: “It is a message to Netanyahu himself that he could be next.”

Israel captured the West Bank, along with east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians want all three territories for a future state.

Successive Israeli governments have promoted settlement growth and construction stretching back decades. It has exploded under Netanyahu’s far-right coalition, which has settlers in key Cabinet posts.

There are now well over 100 settlements across the West Bank that house more than 500,000 settlers. The settlers have Israeli citizenship, while the territory’s 3 million Palestinians live under Israeli military rule, with the Palestinian Authority administering population centres.

Most of the international community considers the settlements illegal, and Palestinians see them as the greatest obstacle to an eventual two-state solution, which is still seen internationally as the only way to resolve the conflict.

Proud of manner in which multi-party delegations put India's voice forward: PM Modi

New Delhi, June 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said he was proud of the manner in which the multi-party delegations presented India’s views in various countries on the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism following the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor.

Modi hosted the members of the multi-party delegations, comprising parliamentarians and former diplomats, who travelled to 33 world capitals over the past few weeks.

“Met members of the various delegations who represented India in different countries and elaborated on India’s commitment to peace and the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism. We are all proud of the manner in which they put forward India’s voice,” Modi said in a post on X.

Members shared their experience with the prime minister, with the central government having already praised the work of the seven delegations comprising over 50 persons, mostly current MPs.

Former parliamentarians and ex-diplomats were also part of these delegations that visited 33 foreign capitals and the European Union. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has already met the delegations and lauded their efforts in conveying India’s strong stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

“We apprised the Prime Minister of the overwhelming support extended by these friendly nations for India’s resolute fight against terrorism and our unwavering commitment to global peace,” Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde said in a post on X.

Shinde had led the delegation to the United Arab Emirates, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

“The Prime Minister lauded our efforts and shared his inspiring vision for enhancing India’s stature on the world stage. His words have further motivated us to work tirelessly for the nation,” Shinde said.

Four delegations were led by MPs of the ruling alliance, including two from the BJP, one from JD(U) and one from Shiv Sena, while three were led by opposition MPs, one each of the Congress, DMK and NCP(SP). BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prasad and Baijyant Panda, Congress’ Shashi Tharoor, JD(U)’s Sanjay Jha, Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde, DMK’s Kanimozhi, and NCP (SP)’s Supriya Sule led their delegations to different parts of the world.

The government had sent the multi-party delegations to portray a message of national unity in the fight against terrorism, with the likes of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi joining the ruling alliance members in championing the Indian cause abroad. Prominent former parliamentarians in the delegations included ex-Union ministers Ghulam Nabi Azad and Salman Khurshid.

“Op Sindoor is proof govt transformed India’s security apparatus”: Rajnath Singh

"Op Sindoor is proof govt transformed India's security apparatus": Rajnath Singh

Dehradun (Uttarakhand), June 10: Stressing that Rs 1.75 lakh crore defence production & Rs 30,000 crore defence exports targets are set for this year, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Tuesday, emphasised that in the last 11 years, the Government has transformed India’s security apparatus by changing the attitude towards every issue related to national security.

Addressing a dialogue on the topic ‘National Security & Terrorism’, organised in Dehradun, Uttarakhand today, Singh said, “In the last 11 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Government has transformed India’s security apparatus by changing the attitude and the way of action towards every issue related to national security, and the world witnessed this shift during Operation Sindoor.”

He described Operation Sindoor as the biggest action taken against terrorism in Indian history, which was carried out in response to the cowardly terror attack on innocent people in Pahalgam.

“Following the abrogation of Article 370, J-K heralded into the era of peace and progress. Our neighbours could not tolerate this and executed the terror attack in Pahalgam. Despite Pakistan’s best efforts, it has not been able to stop development in Kashmir. Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link is a shining example of the Government’s relentless pursuit of progress in J&K. Soon, PoK will join us and say ‘I, too, am Bharat’,” Rajnath Singh asserted.

Rajnath Singh asserted that while the Indian Armed Forces have given a befitting reply to terrorists, it is imperative to prevent terror incidents such as the one in Pahalgam in future. He emphasised on the need to be alert not just at the level of governments, but also at the public level.

Branding terrorism as an epidemic destined to perish, the Defence Minister stressed that the menace cannot be left to die a natural death as its existence will continue to challenge collective peace, development and prosperity. He underscored the urgent need for a permanent solution to terrorism.

“Terrorists are not fighters with a cause. No religious, ideological or political reason can justify terrorism. No human objective can ever be achieved through bloodshed and violence. India and Pakistan attained independence at the same time, but today, India has been recognised as the Mother of Democracy, while Pakistan has emerged as the Father of Global Terrorism. Pakistan has always given shelter to terrorists, trained them on its soil and helped them. It always tries to justify this menace. It is important that we eliminate these terrorists and their entire infrastructure,” said Rajnath Singh.

Singh urged the international community to stop foreign funding to Pakistan, saying that a large part of this financial aid is spent on terrorism. “Funding Pakistan means funding the infrastructure of terrorism. Pakistan is a nursery of terrorism. It should not be nourished,” he added.

The Defence Minister called upon the global community and organisations such as the United Nations to think on issues like terrorism more seriously, stating that “Only when we are free from terrorism, will we be able to move towards the goal of global peace, progress and prosperity.”

Further, Rajnath Singh listed out the steps taken by the Government to strengthen the defence sector, including increasing the defence budget from Rs 2.53 lakh crore in Financial Year (FY) 2013-14 to Rs 6,22 lakh crore in FY 2024-25; reserving 75% of the budget for capital procurement from domestic companies and the issuance of a total of 10 Positive Indigenisation Lists, comprising over 5,500 items.

“Today, Indian Armed Forces use state-of-the-art weapons, missiles, tanks and other systems/platforms manufactured within the country. Our indigenous missiles such as Agni, Prithvi & BrahMos stand ready to give a befitting reply to the enemy. We also have the strength to build aircraft carriers such as INS Vikrant,” he added.

He underlined that the Government’s persistent efforts are bearing fruit as the annual defence production, which was around Rs 40,000 crore in 2014, has crossed the record figure of Rs 1.30 lakh crore today, and defence exports, which were Rs 686 crore in 14, has skyrocketed to Rs 23,622 crore in FY 2024-25, adding that Made-in-India defence products are being exported to nearly 100 countries.

“We have set a target of Rs 1.75 lakh crore defence production this year and Rs three lakh crore by 2029. Our defence exports should reach Rs 30,000 crore this year and Rs 50,000 crore by 2029,” Singh said.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was among the dignitaries who attended the event.

Chief Minister Dhami presented the Prasad of the four Dhams to Rajnath Singh at Jolly Grant Airport on his departure from Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. During this, the Chief Minister also presented him millets products of ‘House of Himalayas’, an umbrella brand of local products of Uttarakhand.
