BCCI complains against Rauf, Sahibzada to ICC; PCB lodge protest against Surya

BCCI complains against Rauf, Sahibzada to ICC; PCB lodge protest against Surya

Dubai, Sep 25: India has filed an official complaint with the ICC against Pakistan cricketers Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan for their provocative gestures during the two sides’ Asia Cup Super 4 game here last Sunday.

It is reliably learnt that the BCCI filed the complaint against the duo on Wednesday and ICC is in receipt of the e-mail.

An ICC hearing is expected to take place in case Sahibzada and Rauf deny these allegations in writing. They might have to appear before the ICC Elite Panel Referee Richie Richardson for a hearing.

In a retaliatory gesture, the Pakistan Cricket Board also seems to have lodged an official complaint with the international parent body against Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav for expressing his solidarity with victims of Pahalgam terror attack and dedicating his team’s victory to the Indian Armed Forces involved in Operation Sindoor. His comments came after the September 14 game.

PCB alleges that Surya’s comments are “political” although technically it needs to be seen when exactly did it file the complaint, which needs to be lodged within seven days of the said comment.

Rauf, Sahibzada gestures

During the September 21 match, Rauf had made gestures to depict the bringing down of a plane to mock India’s military action after Indian supporters chanted “Kohli, Kohli” referring to the couple of match-winning sixes that the Indian legend hit off the pacer at MCG during a T20 World Cup game in 2022.

During the match, he hurled abuses at Indian openers Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma during his bowling spell and the two youngsters responded with their bats.

Sahibzada, during the same match, celebrated with a gun-firing gesture using his bat as a machine gun prop, something that has been widely criticised.

“That celebration was just a moment at that time. I do not do a lot of celebrations after scoring 50. But, it suddenly came to my mind that let’s do a celebration today. I did that. I don’t know how people will take it. I don’t care about that,” Farhan had told reporters after the match.

Both Rauf and Sahibzada will have to explain their gestures at the ICC hearing and if they can’t convince then they could face sanctions as per th code of conduct.

Naqvi posts cryptic CR7 video on ‘X’

Adding fuel to the fire, Asian Cricket Council chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Wednesday posted a slow-motion video of Cristiano Ronaldo on ‘X’, where the Portuguese legend is seen gesturing that an aircraft suddenly crashed, something that Rauf indicated on-field during the clash of arch-rivals last Sunday.

Naqvi, apart from also being Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman, is the ‘Interior Minister’ of his country and is known to make provocative statements against the India.

Ronaldo, in the video, could well be explaining how his direct free-kick dipped and entered the goal.

After this, whether the Indian team, which is now the finalist of the Asia Cup, share the dais with the ACC Chairman is something that remains to be seen.

The matter hasn’t gone unnoticed as far as both BCCI and ICC mandarins are concerned. Only time will tell if there will be some kind of action taken against Naqvi.

Trump alleges ‘sabotage’ at UN, demands Secret Service probe

China and India 'primary funders' of Ukraine war by continuing to purchase Russian oil: Trump at UNGA

New York, Sep 25: US President Donald Trump has claimed he was the target of “three very sinister events” during his visit to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) a day earlier and said the Secret Service would investigate the matter.

Trump, who addressed world leaders at the UN, lashed out at the institution for “squandering its potential,” criticised European allies for their handling of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and accused them of embracing immigration policies that he said were driving their nations “to hell.”

Taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Wednesday (local time), Trump suggested that a series of unusual mishaps during his visit were not coincidental but part of a larger plot.

The first incident, according to Trump, occurred when an escalator carrying him and his entourage came to a “screeching halt.”

He described the incident as “absolutely sabotage,” demanding accountability.

“The people that did it should be arrested,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The second disruption happened during his UN address when his teleprompter suddenly went “stone cold dark.”

Trump implied foul play, although a UN official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said that responsibility for the teleprompter’s operation lay with the White House staff.

The third alleged sabotage, Trump said, was related to sound issues inside the hall. According to him, attendees could only hear his remarks if they relied on interpreters through earpieces. He claimed his wife, Melania, was unable to hear him at all.

“This wasn’t a coincidence, this was triple sabotage,” Trump declared, insisting that the incidents were deliberate.

He also urged the UN to preserve its security footage of the escalator malfunction, adding that the Secret Service would be involved in the probe.

Leh violence eye-opener on J&K’s statehood anguish: CM Omar

Leh violence eye-opener on J&K’s statehood anguish: CM Omar

Srinagar, Sep 24: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that the situation in Leh should be an eye-opener on how people of Jammu and Kashmir feel about the denial of statehood, even though Ladakh had not been promised one.

He was reacting after the movement for statehood to Ladakh descended into violence, arson, and street clashes here on Wednesday, leaving four people dead and at least 59 injured, including 40 Police personnel.

“Ladakh wasn’t even promised statehood; they celebrated UT status in 2019, and they feel betrayed and angry,” CM Omar posted on his X handle. “Now try to imagine how betrayed and disappointed we in J&K feel when the promise of statehood to J&K remains unfulfilled even though we have gone about demanding it democratically, peacefully, and responsibly.”

Earlier, talking to reporters here, he said that people of J&K cannot be punished for the defeat faced by the BJP in the last Assembly elections.

The CM said that the biggest challenge for the government was its working without statehood.

“Even the Supreme Court was told that this will be a three-step process. First there will be delimitation, then election, then restoration of statehood,” he said.

CM Omar said that besides delimitation, assembly elections were also held with massive public participation.

“It was the BJP’s bad luck that they could not win. But the people of J&K cannot be punished for that. Somewhere it seems that because the BJP could not form a government here, that is why the people of J&K will not get statehood,” he said. “But this is an injustice with the people of J&K because nowhere was it said that if the results are in favour of the BJP, then you will get statehood.”

The CM said that only the BJP was opposing the restoration of statehood to J&K.

Referring to the downfall in tourist footfall, he said they kept trying to start tourism again and expected that tourists from West Bengal, Calcutta, and other states would start coming again.

“But the number we were hoping for, that number has not yet come. Our efforts will continue. Let us see what happens,” CM Omar said.

On criticism by the Leader of Opposition (LoP), he said that the LoP was supposed to criticise the NC government.

“He has to do it as the LoP. The more they oppose us, the better it is because it will seem that we are really working on the ground,” he said.

About the row that erupted over writing ‘I Love Muhammad’ (SAW), the CM said there was no logic to have problems with anyone for writing it.

“Nobody should have any problem with writing these three words, and I don’t understand why it has led to the arrest of people. Only a mentally sick person can have a problem with it and make it an issue,” he said.

CM Omar said that writing ‘I Love Muhammad’ (SAW) was not unlawful in any way.

“Even if it is associated with any particular religion, then again, there is no problem with it. People of other religions also write it. Don’t people of the Sikh community write about their Gurus, and don’t our Hindu brothers write about their Baghwans? Outside Kashmir, you will not find a single vehicle without a picture of Baghwan. If that doesn’t go against the law, then how does writing ‘I Love Muhammad’ (SAW) go against the law,” he said.

A controversy started with the writing of ‘I Love Muhammad’ (SAW) in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur and spiralled into widespread protests by members of the Muslim community across several states apart from Uttar Pradesh, including Uttarakhand, Telangana, and Maharashtra, after people from the Hindu community alleged that it was a new trend and a deliberate provocation.

ADDRESS ROOT CAUSE OF PROBLEMS: MEHBOOBA MUFTI

Meanwhile, former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti said the situation in Ladakh had made it imperative for the Centre to move beyond day-to-day crisis management and address the root cause of the problems.

“It’s time that the Government of India undertakes a sincere and thorough appraisal of what has truly changed since 2019. This video isn’t from Kashmir, considered the epicentre of unrest, but from the heart of Ladakh, where angry protesters have set Police vehicles and a BJP office on fire,” she said in a post on X.

The PDP chief said, Leh, a region long known for its peaceful and measured protests, is now witnessing a disturbing shift toward violent demonstrations.

“People seem to have lost patience, feel betrayed, insecure, and let down by unfulfilled promises,” she said. “It is imperative that the government move beyond day-to-day crisis management and address the root causes of this discontent urgently and transparently.”

Rana voices concern over Ladakh protests

Rana voices concern over Ladakh protests

New Delhi, Sep 24: Senior Cabinet Minister in the Omar Abdullah-led Government and tribal leader Javed Ahmed Rana expressed grave concern over the unfolding developments in Ladakh, terming the ongoing protests a “clear manifestation of the growing disconnect between the people and the institutions that are meant to represent them.”

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Rana said that the unrest in Ladakh is not an isolated expression of discontent but reflects a wider crisis of political disempowerment and exclusion across the entire region of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.

“The replacement of elected governance with bureaucratic control strikes at the core of our constitutional democracy,” Rana said.

“The growing reliance on centralised administration cannot substitute the will or aspirations of the people. What we are witnessing today in Ladakh is a direct outcome of that alienation.”

Rana emphasised that the ongoing unrest must be seen in the larger context of the erosion of democratic institutions and representative mechanisms in both Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh post-August 2019.

Calling for immediate corrective steps, he urged the Union Government to urgently restore full democratic rights and institutional autonomy, in line with India’s federal democratic framework.

“Democracy is not merely about administrative efficiency—it is about trust in the people’s will. Governance from a distance breeds resentment, not resolution,” Rana remarked.

Reiterating the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference’s unwavering commitment to democratic values, regional autonomy and inclusive governance, Rana affirmed solidarity with all those in Ladakh and across Jammu & Kashmir who are seeking a return to representative politics and constitutional safeguards.

The statement comes amid growing protests in Ladakh, where civil society groups, student bodies and local political organisations have intensified demands for constitutional protections, greater autonomy and the reinstatement of democratic processes.

Rana has warned that continued political alienation in the region would only deepen discontent and weaken public faith in the system, urging New Delhi to respond not with delay or deflection, but with sincerity and concrete action.

China and India 'primary funders' of Ukraine war by continuing to purchase Russian oil: Trump at UNGA

Moscow, Sep 24: Russia on Wednesday rejected US President Donald Trump’s remarks about Ukraine retaking lost territories with the help of the EU, saying it is an “integral part of European security”.

President Trump said Tuesday that Ukraine can win back all territory lost to Russia, a dramatic shift from the US leader’s call on Kyiv to make concessions.

Trump offered his position in a social media posting soon after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
