Judge puts temporary hold on Trump’s latest ban on Harvard’s foreign students

Trump administration halts Harvard University’s eligibility to enrol international students: NYT report

Washington, June 06: A federal judge late Thursday temporarily blocked a proclamation by President Donald Trump that banned foreign students from entering the US to attend Harvard University.

Trump’s proclamation, issued Wednesday, was the latest attempt by his administration to prevent the nation’s oldest and wealthiest college from enrolling a quarter of its students, who accounts for much of Harvard’s research and scholarship.

Harvard filed a legal challenge the next day, asking for a judge to block Trump’s order and calling it illegal retaliation for Harvard’s rejection of White House demands. Harvard said the president was attempting an end-run around a previous court order.

A few hours later, US District Judge Allison Burroughs in Boston issued a temporary restraining order against Trump’s Wednesday proclamation.

Harvard, she said, had demonstrated it would sustain “immediate and irreparable injury” before she would have an opportunity to hear from the parties in the lawsuit.

Burroughs also extended the temporary hold she placed on the administration’s previous attempt to end Harvard’s enrolment of international students. Last month, the Department of Homeland Security revoked Harvard’s certification to host foreign students and issue paperwork to them for their visas, only to have Burroughs block the action temporarily. Trump’s order this week invoked a different legal authority.

If Trump’s measure were to survive this court challenge, it would block thousands of students who are scheduled to come to Harvard’s campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the summer and fall terms.

“Harvard’s more than 7,000 F-1 and J-1 visa holders – and their dependents – have become pawns in the government’s escalating campaign of retaliation,” Harvard wrote Thursday in a court filing.

While the court case proceeds, Harvard is making contingency plans so students and visiting scholars can continue their work at the university, President Alan Garber said in a message to the campus and alumni.

“Each of us is part of a truly global university community,” Garber said Thursday. “We know that the benefits of bringing talented people together from around the world are unique and irreplaceable.”

Harvard has attracted a growing number of the brightest minds from around the world, with international enrollment growing from 11% of the student body three decades ago to 26% today.

As those students wait to find out if they’ll be able to attend the university, some are pursuing other options.

Rising international enrollment has made Harvard and other elite colleges uniquely vulnerable to Trump’s crackdown on foreign students. Republicans have been seeking to force overhauls of the nation’s top colleges, which they see as hotbeds of “woke” and antisemitic viewpoints.

Garber says the university has made changes to combat antisemitism. But Harvard, he said, will not stray from its “core, legally-protected principles,” even after receiving federal ultimatums.

Trump’s administration has also taken steps to withhold federal funding from Harvard and other elite colleges that have rejected White House demands related to campus protests, admissions, hiring and more. Harvard’s $53 billion endowment allows it to weather the loss of funding for a time, although Garber has warned of “difficult decisions and sacrifices” to come.

But cutting off students and visiting scholars could hamstring the university’s research and global standing.

RBI cuts repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5 pc, changes policy stance to neutral

RBI cuts policy rate by 25 bps to 6 pc, second in a row

Mumbai, June 06: RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Friday announced a jumbo 50 basis points cut in the repo rate from 6 per cent to 5.5 per cent to spur growth in the economy, as inflation has come down below the lower RBI band of 4 per cent.

A lower policy rate leads to a decline in interest rate on bank loans which makes borrowing easier for consumers as well as businesses resulting in higher consumption and investments in the economy leading to higher growth.

However, the effectiveness of this rate cut will largely hinge on how quickly and efficiently commercial banks pass on the benefits to borrowers.

The RBI Governor said the repo rate has now been reduced 100 basis points in quick succession since February this year and hence, the monetary policy stance has been changed from accommodative to neutral.

This will enable the RBI to keep a close watch on the overall growth-inflation dynamics.

The RBI Governor informed the inflation rate has now declined to 3.2 per cent amid a broad-based moderation of prices, and there is a durable alignment of the inflation with the RBI’s band.

Accordingly, the RBI has also reduced its projection for the inflation rate from 4 per cent to 3.7 per cent.

Malhotra said that India was still the fastest-growing economy. The balance sheets of corporates, banks and the government were strong and the external sector was stable which reflected the robust fundamentals of the economy. The Indian economy offered attractive opportunities for both domestic and foreign investors, he added.

The uncertainties regarding rabi crops have abated considerably and the second advance estimates point to a record wheat production and higher production of key pulses over that last year. Robust kharif arrivals, are also expected to set the stage for a durable softening of food inflation.

According to the RBI, the sharp decline in inflation expectations would also help anchor inflation expectations, going ahead. Furthermore, the fall in crude oil prices augurs well for the inflation outlook.

The RBI Governor also announced a 100 basis points CRR cut, effective in 4 equal tranches of 25 basis points starting from September 6, October 4, November 1 and November 29.

The Governor said that the Indian economy offers immense opportunities to investors on the back of demography, digitalisation, and domestic demand.

J&K eagerly awaits PM Modi heralding a new dawn of progress

J&K eagerly awaits PM Modi heralding a new dawn of progress

Jammu, June 06: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday to flag off the Vande Bharat train service from Katra to Srinagar and lay the foundation/inaugurate projects worth Rs 46,000, people are eagerly looking forward to a new developmental dawn on the union territory’s horizon.

PM Modi is scheduled to rewrite history by realising the over 70-year-long dream of the people in Kashmir, for whom the journey from the landlocked Valley to the rest of the country looked a distant prospect.

As the entire security apparatus drawn from the special protection group (SPG), army, CAPFs and the local police are maintaining the hawkeyed vigil on the security situation to ensure a peaceful and hassle-free visit of the PM, the common man in J&K is enthusiastic about the events of the day going to change the future of the UT.

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway has always been the heartburn for millions of people living in the Kashmir Valley because of the highway’s undependability.

A small trickle of rain would trigger landslides, mudslides, shooting stones and caving in of the road, resulting in a blockade lasting days at a stretch on the Jammu-Srinagar highway.

The blockade of the Jammu-Srinagar highway is going to be of little consequence after Saturday, when the commercial operations of the Vande Bharat train service begin.

“All our horticulture, agriculture and handicrafts, including shawls, carpets, and walnut wood furniture, etc., suffer because of the huge transportation cost and the time taken for such products to reach the terminal markets.

“For Kashmir’s future generations, this story is now going to be a forgotten tale of the past. Goods trains will now transport our produce in the shortest possible time at low freight and without any uncertainty about arrival,” said Abdul Salam Mir, 64, a businessman living in Srinagar city.

Students travelling to seek admissions in professional colleges, patients going out for treatment, businessmen travelling to outside markets, and the common man looking for comfort, affordability and certainty of travel, all people living in Kashmir Valley are going to benefit from the train coming to Kashmir.

People outside the Valley, including tourists, businessmen and professionals, will equally benefit.

“From the point of view of integration and unity of the country, the railway link between Kashmir to Kanyakumari is a powerful political message the PM is going to send from Katra town today”, said Krishen Chand, 52, a resident of Katra town.

From awareness to action against plastic pollution

From awareness to action against plastic pollution

Srinagar, June 5: World Environment Day is a global event observed annually on June 5. It serves as an important occasion to raise awareness about environmental crises and promote action for sustainability. It is organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP),

This year the main focus is on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”

“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another” – Mahatma Gandhi

This year’s theme is to highlight negative impacts of plastic pollution’s effects. As per records, each year, more than 400 million tons of plastic are produced globally. Shockingly, half of that is single-use plastic, destined to pollute the planet—often without ever reaching a landfill. Most of what ends up on our streets, beaches, and green spaces is single-use plastics that never stood a chance of getting recycled.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day was set by the UNEP back in 2023, with the expectation that the Global Plastics Treaty would be finalized and signed by now. According to reports, the final negotiations were meant to happen in Busan, South Korea, but after negotiators failed to reach a consensus on key issues, a sixth negotiation.

As per data Jammu and Kashmir generates an estimated 51,000 tonnes of plastic waste every year—a figure driven by rapid urbanization, rising consumer habits, and weak waste management systems. The challenge isn’t just the amount of waste, but how it’s handled. Without proper segregation at the source and scientific collection mechanisms, much of the plastic waste finds its way into landfills, water bodies, and even forested areas, posing serious environmental threats

Plastic pollution permeates every corner of the planet. World Environment Day 2025 calls for collective action to tackle plastic pollution. Here are few simple everyday things that can be incorporated in daily lives to reduce plastic consumption:

Invest in high-quality reusable shopping bags, produce bags, water bottles, and food containers.

Choose products without excessive packaging when shopping.

Support local farmers, local products where produce is often sold without packaging.

Look for products made from recycled materials or designed for long-term use.

Keep reusable items in convenient locations: bags in your car, cutlery at picnics etc.

Kauri museum to showcase journey of world's highest rail bridge project in J&K

Kauri, June 05: Tales of toil and the engineering prowess behind the construction of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country, will be the highlight of a railway museum here to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.

The museum, which is part of the world’s highest steel arch rail bridge over the Chenab river in Reasi district, is being developed as a tourist spot, with authorities calling for necessary measures to increase visitors’ footfall.

The extraordinary saga of human grit and engineering prowess behind the construction of this prestigious project will be a treat for visitors, officials said.

The interior is inspired by Karsari art, incorporating modern design with traditional Deodar wood, they said, adding that the wood has been crafted into geometric shapes.

“A museum dedicated to USBRL has been built adjacent to the Chenab Bridge viewing point. It will be inaugurated by the prime minister along with the bridge and other projects,” a senior official told PTI.

Set up at one end of the world’s highest railway bridge in Reasi district, the three-storeyed museum showcases engineering marvels and technical highlights of the USBRL project, officials said.

The museum will also feature models and exhibits showcasing engineering challenges such as Tunnel T-33, the construction of cable-stayed bridges in the Anji section, the challenges of building the Chenab Bridge, and various tunnel-related technologies, marvels and systems, they said.

“It will be a visual tale of hard toil by men and machines in making this project a reality,” the official said.

The rail museum is not just about historical exhibits of the project, but it also features interactive galleries and several other digital and virtual features to provide a comprehensive and engaging experience for visitors.

“It is going to be a popular destination for both locals and tourists, expected to attract a huge number of visitors annually,” the official said.

The museum will have exhibits related to the engineering feats and technical steps of the USBRL project on the first floor while the second and third floors will house a restaurant and rooftop viewing area, officials said.

There will be an amphitheatre for a broad view of the bridge, with displays of the history of the USBRL project, they said.

“Tourists will be able to enjoy their tea or food while admiring the trains speeding over the Chenab Bridge and taking in the breathtaking surrounding views,” the official said.

This move is expected to boost tourism, change the region’s image, and create jobs.

The museum will also have a park being constructed in front for tourists. The landscape of the nearby villages is changing as the Chenab bridge nears completion.

“The museum’s development is expected to create job opportunities for local residents. Locals will be able to serve traditional food to tourists, and many will gain employment through other services,” said local resident Surinder Singh.

The two ends of the Chenab Rail Bridge are Kauri and Bakkal. This bridge is located between these two villages on the banks of the Chenab river.

At 359 m above the riverbed, the Chenab Rail Bridge stands as the world’s highest railway arch bridge. “It rises 35 m higher than the Eiffel Tower. Spanning 1,315 m, this steel arch structure is a key part of the rail line and marks a significant milestone in Indian engineering,” an official said.

Designed to endure harsh terrain and extreme weather, the bridge can withstand wind speeds of up to 260 kmph and is built to last 120 years. With a project cost of Rs 1,486 crore, it is not just a bridge but a symbol of India’s technical prowess.

The Anji bridge also form part of the project, valued at approximately Rs 43,780 crore. The USBRL spans a total length of 272 km and includes 36 tunnels covering 119 kilometers, along with 943 bridges constructed across diverse terrain, they said.

Modi will inaugurate the Chenab Rail Bridge and flag off a Vande Bharat train to Kashmir on Friday, marking a major milestone in India’s railway history.
