"Op Sindoor led to increase in demand for our Indigenous defence products": Rajnath Singh

Hyderabad, Sep 17: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday virtually rejected US President Donald Trump’s claims of intervening to stop the Indo-Pak conflict following Operation Sindoor, saying the action against terrorists was not suspended due to any third-party mediation.

Speaking at the ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’ celebrations organised by the union government here, he said ‘Operation Sindoor’ would resume if any terrorist attack took place in the future.

“There are some people who ask whether the ceasefire between India and Pakistan happened because of the intervention of someone. I would like to make it clear. The operation against terrorists was not suspended because of someone’s intervention,” he said.

“Some claim to have stopped the operation between India and Pakistan. Nobody stopped it. I would like to clarify that Mohammad Ishaq Dar, who is Pakistan’s Deputy PM and foreign minister, also made it clear that India rejected third-party role in the conflict,” he said.

PM Modi has also made it clear that it is a bilateral issue and a third party cannot interfere, he said.

GST reforms to inject Rs 2 lakh crore into economy, says Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

Visakhapatnam, Sep 17: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said the next generation GST reforms will infuse Rs 2 lakh crore into the economy, which will leave people with more cash in hand that otherwise would have gone as taxes.

Addressing the Outreach and Interaction Program on Next Gen GST Reforms, she also said, following the tax reforms, 99 per cent of goods under 12 per cent GST slab have moved to five per cent. The rejig has resulted in 90 per cent items under 28 per cent tax slab slipping into the 18 per cent bracket.

“With this New Gen Tax regime, with only two slabs (5 per cent and 18 per cent), Rs 2 lakh crore is injected into the economy. People will have cash on hand,” she said.

The minister said the GST revenues grew to Rs 22.08 lakh crore in 2025 from Rs 7.19 lakh crore in 2028 when it was introduced.

According to her, the taxpayer’s number grew to 1.51 crore from the earlier 65 lakh.

Srinagar-Jammu national highway reopens for heavy vehicles after three weeks

Srinagar, Sep 17: The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was thrown open for heavy vehicles on Wednesday after three weeks, clearing the way for hundreds of fruit-laden trucks to proceed towards their destinations across the country.

Fruit-laden trucks from Kashmir were stranded for days due to the closure of the crucial highway following heavy rains and flash floods.

The 270 km-long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH44) was reopened last week, but only for light motor vehicles.

“Our aim is to clear maximum number of stranded vehicles which are loaded with fruits,” Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic-rural) Ravindra Singh told reporters.

He said all the stranded vehicles along the highway and those waiting at the fruit mandis will be cleared on priority basis.

He said the drivers should follow the traffic advisory with regard to movement of heavy vehicles and avoid overtaking along the highway.

“Traffic violations can lead to accidents which can in turn lead to road blockade,” he added.

The highway suffered heavy damages due to incessant rains and flashfloods last month, leading to closure of the arterial road.

The highway was closed for heavy vehicles, giving rise to fear among fruit growers that the crop this year might not reach the terminal markets of the country.

The authorities have used Mughal Road to take out fruit from the valley but the terrain of the road is not feasible for operating heavy vehicles.

Grand Mufti of India welcomes Supreme Court’s stay on Waqf Amendment Bill, calls it a victory for constitutional values

Grand Mufti of India Welcomes Supreme Court's Stay on Waqf Amendment Bill, Calls it a Victory for Constitutional Values

New Delhi, Sep 17: Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, the Grand Mufti of India, welcomed the Honourable Supreme Court’s decision to issue a partial stay on the controversial Waqf Amendment Bill, describing it as a “truly hopeful development for all citizens who believe in the democratic fabric of our nation.”

In his statement, the Grand Mufti said, “The Supreme Court’s intervention is a moment of great relief. The proposed bill contained provisions that gravely threatened to undermine the sacred autonomy, character, and transparent functioning of Waqf institutions, which have served our communities for centuries. By freezing these key clauses, the court has given a major boost to the protection of our constitutional rights and democratic principles.”

He further elaborated on the constitutional implications, stating, “Any legislative overreach into the affairs of Waqf is a direct infringement on the religious freedom guaranteed to every citizen by our Constitution. This bill was not merely a matter of administrative law; it struck at the core values of tolerance and the civil rights upon which our great country is built. It challenged the pluralistic ethos we all cherish.”

“The decisive action by the judiciary gives fresh confidence and restores faith in our democratic institutions. It serves as a reminder that the rule of law and the rights of minorities are protected,” he added.

The Grand Mufti concluded with an appeal for calm and constructive dialogue. “Now, it is imperative for everyone to continue engaging with this issue in a peaceful, mature, and democratic manner. We must place our trust in the judicial process and continue to advocate for our rights through constitutional means. I urge all community members and leaders to act with wisdom and restraint as this matter proceeds.”

Significant milestone in connecting Kashmir: Ashwini Vaishnaw

New Delhi, Sep 16: Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, on Tuesday said that India’s growing pool of skilled talent is attracting global semiconductor design companies in large numbers.

Speaking at the inauguration of chip design giant ARM’s new office in Bengaluru, the minister said that one of the key goals of the Semiconductor Mission has been to build a strong and deep talent pipeline, and this effort is now showing results.

“Under the semiconductor mission, one of the major targets we have taken is to develop a very deep talent pipeline, and this is reflected in the way so many global design companies are coming to India because the talent is here,” Vaishnaw said.

The minister highlighted that the Semiconductor Mission is supporting 278 universities and institutions across the country, where students now have access to the world’s latest EDA tools for chip design.

“So far, 28 chips have already been designed by students. This reflects the confidence that global semiconductor companies have in India,” he added.

Vaishnaw also announced that ARM will design advanced chips, including two-nanometer (2nm) chips, from its new Bengaluru unit.

He congratulated ARM and its team for choosing India as a hub for such cutting-edge work.

The minister noted that ecosystem partners, such as suppliers of chemicals, gases, substrates, and manufacturing equipment, are also setting up facilities in India.

At the same time, design capabilities are growing fast with many design-linked incentive (DLI) companies receiving funding from venture capital partners.

Vaishnaw further shared that the government has launched the India Deep Tech Fund, starting with $1 billion, to support innovation in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, biotech, and other advanced technology sectors.

Looking ahead, the minister said that the upcoming Version 2.0 of the Semiconductor Mission will focus on developing equipment and materials required for chip manufacturing, in addition to design and fabrication.

“We are working on the complete semiconductor stack — designing chips, manufacturing them, building the equipment and materials that go into making them, and developing the talent pipeline. The progress is very good, and this is just the beginning,” he said.

Fruit-laden trucks to move towards Jammu today at 11 AM: IG Traffic

Efforts being made to reopen J-K highway for traffic by Sat morning: Jammu DC

Srinagar, Sep 17: Inspector General of Police (Traffic), M. Suleman Choudhary, on Wednesday said that fruit-laden trucks will be allowed to proceed towards Jammu along the Srinagar-Jammu highway today at 11:00 AM.

Choudhary said that heavy motor vehicles will be permitted to move towards Jammu. “Light motor vehicles should take the Mughal route. Our main priority is to clear fruit-laden trucks,” he stated, adding that they expect to clear most of the stranded trucks heading Jammu.

The IGP had told last evening that 2,800 trucks—mostly carrying fruit—had passed through the Mughal Road on Monday and Tuesday.

The ruling NC-led government has come under sharp criticism from fruit growers and Kashmir-based opposition parties, including the PC and PDP, for failing to ensure the unhindered movement of fruit-laden trucks to markets across the country.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also faced backlash from various quarters for failing to widen and level a 300-metre stretch constructed at Tahard in Udhampur district, after the existing highway was buried under debris.

According to officials, the poor condition of this stretch is causing significant hindrances to the smooth movement of traffic along the highway.

Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday to review the situation along the Srinagar-Jammu highway—(KNO)

Himachal Pradesh: Flash floods hit Panarsa, Takoli, Nagwain areas; highway connectivity disrupted

Shimla, Sep 17: Monsoon fury in Himachal Pradesh has rendered more than 1,500 families homeless since its onset on June 20 as the state recorded an average rainfall of 1010.9 mm this time, 46 per cent more than the normal of 692.1 mm.

The Himalayan state witnessed 46 cloudbursts, 98 flash floods and 145 major landslides, while 417 people have died. Of those dead, 231 lost their lives in rain-related incidents and 181 in road accidents. About 477 people have suffered injuries, while 45 are still missing.

Israel strikes the Yemeni port of Hodeida as Houthi rebels activate air defences

Israel launches airstrikes on Yemen's Red Sea ports

Aden, Sep 17: Israel on Tuesday launched airstrikes on the Yemeni city of Hodeida as Iranian-backed Houthi rebels activated air defences.

The Israeli military said in an update that it struck “military infrastructure” used by the Houthis at Hodeida port.

“The Hudaydah Port is used by the Houthi terrorist regime for the transfer of weapons supplied by the Iranian regime, in order to execute attacks against the State of Israel and its allies,” the statement read.

“Our air defences are currently confronting the Israeli aircrafts that are launching an aggression against our country,” Houthi spokesperson Yayha Saree posted on X.

Saree said in a statement that the Houthi air defences “caused great confusion” for Israeli aircraft and forced some combat formations to leave Yemeni airspace before carrying out the attacks, thwarting Israel’s incursion deep into Yemen.

Earlier Israeli strikes targeted Sanaa

The latest strikes came as hundreds attended funeral services for 31 Yemeni journalists who were reported killed in Israeli airstrikes last week that targeted Houthis in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

The strikes last Wednesday followed a drone launched by the Houthis that breached Israel’s multilayered air defences and slammed into a southern Israeli airport, blowing out glass windows and injuring one person.

In Yemen, dozens were reported killed, including the journalists, in the strikes that hit Sanaa, including residential areas, a military headquarters and a fuel station, according to the health ministry in the rebel-held northern part of the country.

The National Museum of Yemen in Sanaa was also damaged, according to the rebels’ culture ministry, with footage from the site showings damage to the building’s façade. A government facility in the city of Hazm, the capital of northern Jawf province, was also hit.

The Israeli army said last week that it struck sites used by the Houthis to gather intelligence and attack Israel, a fuel storage facility, and a “public relations department responsible for distributing propaganda messages in the media.”

Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV broadcast the funerals Tuesday, showing dozens inside a mosque and the caskets being carried ahead of the burial. An honor guard stood beside the coffins.

The turnout was lower than expected for such a a “huge loss,” according to Khaled Rageh and Ahmed Malhy, who attended the funerals, likely because heavy morning rain kept some away. The two men spoke to The Associated Press by phone.

Threats to journalists working in Yemen

Israel has previously launched waves of airstrikes in response to the Houthis’ firing missiles and drones at Israel. The Houthis say they are attacking in solidarity with Palestinians amid the war in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis have also targeted ships in the Red Sea for over 22 months.

The Committee to Protect Journalists told The Associated Press on Monday that the organization is still actively looking into the reported deaths of Yemeni journalists but was having difficulties in verifying facts on the ground in rebel-held Sanaa.

“The information environment is highly restricted — Houthi authorities have imposed strict censorship, including a ban on sharing photos or videos related to the airstrikes,” the CPJ said.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch in a Monday post said Israeli airstrikes in Sanaa also hit a media center housing the headquarters of two newspapers, describing it as another example of the dangers facing journalists in Yemen.

“The recent Israeli forces’ attack further highlights the threats journalists are facing in Yemen, not just by domestic authorities but also by external warring parties,” said HRW.

Mohammed al-Basha, a Yemen analyst, said on X that the strikes hit as staffers at the “September 26” newspaper gathered to prepare the paper’s next edition.

PSA slapped on Mehraj Malik to divert attention from Hazratbal incident: Mehbooba

Srinagar, Sep 17: The Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday demanded fair compensation and a government job to the family of a boy who was killed in a recent landmine blast in Anantnag district.

“Shahid Yousaf Mouche, a 12-year-old boy from Larnoo Kokernag, was fatally injured in a landmine explosion near the boundary wall of the Khundroo Army camp where he was residing with his maternal grandparents. Despite being rushed to the Army Hospital in Srinagar, he sadly succumbed to his injuries,” PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said in an X post.

Mufti said Mouche belonged to a poor family, which has now been left heartbroken.

“The government must show compassion in this tragic case by providing fair compensation and offering a government job to the family, so that they may find some hope and support during these dark times,” she added.

The boy was injured when a landmine planted for security of the ammunition depot at Khundru went off on Sunday.

He was initially rushed to a hospital in Anantnag, from where he was referred to the Army’s 92 Base Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries there on Monday.
