Asif Iqbal from north Kashmir joins ICC Umpires Panel, officiates in Pakistan–Afghanistan–UAE tri-series

Srinagar, Sep 04: Asif Iqbal from Khanpora Baramulla has been named to the ICC panel of umpires, officiating in the ongoing T20 tri-nation series featuring Pakistan, Afghanistan and the UAE at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Asif (43), who stood as an on-field umpire in the high-octane Pakistan–Afghanistan clash on September 2, began his journey from the narrow lanes of Baramulla where he first played cricket, in the absence of proper playgrounds.

His family, while recalling his early passion, said, Asif used to play in the bylanes as there was no ground here. “It’s not just our pride, but the pride of the whole Baramulla, in fact the entire valley.”

After basic schooling in Baramulla, Asif pursued higher studies at Aligarh before moving to Dubai for work. In 2017, he completed his Level-1 umpiring course in Dubai and later trained in Sri Lanka, which paved the way for his international career.

Local Auqaf Head, Malik Shabir expressed joy at Asif’s feat while highlighting the lack of sports infrastructure in the town. “Despite no adequate infrastructure, he made it this far. Our youth have talent, but dilapidated grounds are holding them back. We urge the administration to upgrade facilities,” he said.

Mohammed Rafiq Bhat, a JKCA umpire, described Asif as his mentor, and said whenever he had doubts, he would call Asif. “He even took Zoom sessions for me to clear things up. He has been a constant source of guidance and motivation,” Bhat said.

According to the accessed details, Aasif Iqbal has officiated in multiple high-profile T20 Internationals, beginning with the UAE vs Pakistan match on 29 August 2025 in Sharjah (T20I 3426), followed by UAE vs Afghanistan on 31 August and Afghanistan vs Pakistan on 1 September.

Between 2021 and 2025, he has umpired 21 T20 matches, placing him among the most active officials globally. In 2024, he also stood in three men’s ODIs and three Women’s ODIs, demonstrating versatility across formats. (KNO)

Train services suspended from Udhampur to Pathankot amid heavy rainfall

Jammu, Sep 04: The Jammu-Katra shuttle train service, which was started to facilitate the movement of locals and stranded passengers, was suspended for the second day on Thursday in the wake of floods and landslides.

Heavy rains triggered landslides blocking the portal of tunnel number 16 on the rail track between Ramnagar and Manwal in the Jammu-Udhampur section.

“Due to heavy rainfall and landslides, railways have decided to cancel the shuttle train service (between Jammu and Katra) today,” Chief Public Relations Officer Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay said.

The shuttle services, with the induction of four trains between Katra and Jammu, had started on September 1, and were scheduled to run till September 15.

Rail traffic has remained suspended in the Jammu railway division for the past nine days due to misalignment and breaches at multiple locations in the Pathankot-Jammu section following heavy rains and flash floods on August 26.

However, railways has been running special trains to ferry stranded passengers from Jammu to their destinations over the past four days.

A total of 5,784 stranded passengers have been ferried in seven trains from Jammu for their onward journey.

Scores of people, especially pilgrims, were stranded as heavy rains lashed the Jammu region since August 26, severely disrupting rail and road traffic.

A landslide near the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra claimed 34 lives.

SC notice to NIA on Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah’s plea for bail

Shabir Shah stable, social media rumours untrue: PRO Delhi Prisons

New Delhi, Sep 4: The Supreme Court on Thursday sought response from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Ahmed Shah’s plea challenging the Delhi High Court order denying him bail in a terror funding case.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, however, refused to grant him interim bail.

Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for Shah, sought interim bail, saying that the petitioner was “very sick”.

The bench issued notice to the NIA on Shah’s plea challenging a June 12 this year order of the high court.

The bench posted the matter for hearing after two weeks.

The high court had refused to grant him bail in the case, observing the possibility of him carrying out similar unlawful activities and influencing witnesses couldn’t be ruled out.

Shah was arrested by the NIA on June 4, 2019.

In 2017, the NIA registered a case against 12 persons on allegations of conspiracy for raising and collecting funds for causing disruption by way of pelting stones, damaging public property and conspiring to wage war against the Government of India.

Small cars, 2-wheelers to get cheaper ahead of festive season

GST 2.0: Small cars, 2-wheelers to get cheaper ahead of festive season

New Delhi, Sep 04: The GST rate rejig will make small cars and two-wheelers cheaper and big SUVs also are set to become affordable, as the festive season inches closer.

The GST Council has approved transformational changes to India’s indirect tax structure — adopting a 5 per cent and 18 per cent tax structure — and several daily-use goods will become cheaper from September 22.

Reducing GST on small cars to 18 per cent is a big boost for the auto industry, especially with the festive season around the corner.

The GST Council has put all petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles broadly under two tax rates — 18 per cent for vehicles under 4 metres long and 40 per cent if they are longer.

It means that small cars (less than 4 metres in length and engine capacity of under 1200 cc for petrol and 1500 cc for diesel) will attract 18 per cent GST from September 22, compared with total levies of 29-31 per cent under the current regime.

Moreover, motorcycles with engine capacity less than 350 cc also will be taxed at 18 per cent as against 28 per cent currently.

If there is an 11 per cent reduction in GST, the ex-showroom price of small cars will come down by 12-12.5 per cent, say industry experts.

For example, a car with an ex-showroom price of Rs 5 lakh will come down by Rs 62,500.

Larger cars will become slightly cheaper as they will be taxed at the special rate of 40 per cent, compared with 43-50 per cent currently, including cess.

According to experts, with auto parts also set to attract a uniform rate of 18 per cent (as against current 28 per cent), prices are likely to come down across the supply chain.

Gaurav Vangaal, associate director at S&P Global Mobility, said that brands like Maruti, Tata and Mahindra are likely to benefit the most, especially with popular small crossovers like Fronx and Punch gaining traction.
