CBI arrests 6 J-K policemen on SC order for cop’s custodial torture

Seven hardcore criminals held with weapons in Samba: Police

Srinagar, Aug 20: The CBI on Wednesday arrested eight police personnel, including at least two officers, in connection with the alleged custodial torture of a cop, following orders from the Supreme Court last month, officials said here on Wednesday.

The arrested cops include a deputy superintendent of police, an inspector, and an assistant sub-inspector, officials said here.

The accused cops were directed to submit their weapons and other government articles to the respective District Police Lines.

One of the accused cops — a special police officer working on an honorarium — has been disengaged and struck off from Special Police Officer (SPO) rolls.

Further details were awaited, the officials said.

On July 21, the Supreme Court directed the CBI to register an FIR over the “brutal and inhuman custodial torture” of a police constable in Jammu and Kashmir and ordered the UT administration to pay him Rs 50 lakh in compensation.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said the injuries caused to the constable during his illegal detention, particularly the “complete mutilation of his genitalia, use of pepper/chilly powder and electric shocks on his genitalia”, were grave reminders of the inhuman torture meted out to him.

“The cumulative effect of all these facts is deeply shocking to the conscience of this court,” the bench said, adding that the violation of Article 21 is “not only evident but egregious.”

The bench observed that the constable suffered life-debilitating injuries in the custody of “fellow state actors” and despite repeated complaints, no effective redressal was provided.

Monsoon session of Parliament to conclude today

New Delhi, Aug 21: The monsoon session of Parliament is set to conclude on Thursday after running for nearly a month since July 21. The proceedings in both Houses — the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha — will reconvene at 11 a.m. for the final sitting of the session.

Throughout the monsoon session, multiple adjournments disrupted proceedings as the Opposition staged continuous protests.

Their primary demand was for a detailed discussion on the voter list revision in Bihar ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “conspiring” to manipulate the voter list in the state.

On Wednesday, despite loud protests from the Opposition, the Lok Sabha passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025.

The legislation seeks to promote and regulate the online gaming industry, encompassing e-sports, educational games, and social gaming. It introduces stricter regulations for gaming platforms, particularly those involving real-money games such as poker.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also introduced significant bills during the session, including one that mandates the removal of elected representatives who face arrest or detention on serious criminal charges.

The legislation, if enacted, will apply to the Prime Minister, Union ministers, Chief Ministers, and ministers of Union Territories.

Shah tabled three key bills — The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025.

According to the provisions, any Prime Minister, Union minister, Chief Minister, or minister of a state or Union Territory who is arrested and remains in custody for 30 consecutive days in connection with offences carrying a minimum jail term of five years will be required to resign by the 31st day.

In case of non-compliance, they will be automatically removed from office.

The proposed legislation has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), which has been directed to submit its report on the opening day of the next parliamentary session.

Shah assured that the Opposition would be given ample opportunity to raise objections and present its views before the panel.

Srinagar, Aug 20: The Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) has voiced serious concerns over the recent rotten meat scandal, urging immediate action and transparency from authorities.

Echoing these concerns, AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi demanded answers from the Food Safety deptt and related agencies “How much rotten meat has already reached the Valley? Why were critical checkpoints such as Lakhanpur and Lower Munda not utilized to prevent contaminated supplies from entering our markets? What about the reports of the samples the department has already taken? Most importantly, why are the names of hotels and restaurants using this meat still being kept under wraps?”

Inam Un Nabi added: “This is more than a public health emergency, it’s a betrayal of consumer trust. The people of J&K deserve full transparency.

The public has a right to know which eateries compromised food safety. Authorities must stop shielding offenders under the guise of business confidentiality.”

Khelo India Water Festival brings 24 gold medal events to Dal Lake

Khelo India Water Sports Festival set for Dal Lake

New Delhi, Aug 20: The best national athletes in the country will vie for the 24 gold medals at stake in the inaugural Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF) to be held at the iconic Dal Lake here. The three-day event will see more than 400 compete for the medal events—rowing, canoeing, and kayaking.

As per a statement, the Khelo India Water Sports Festival 2025 will be the first consolidated open-age category championships where all 14 kayaking and canoeing events and the 10 rowing events are Olympic events. To add to the glamour of the Water Games, there will be three demonstration events—water skiing, shikara boat spring, and dragon boat race.

The KIWSF will see 36 states and union territories in action. Among them, all eyes will be on athletes from Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Kerala. “Since Services will not take part in these Games as a team, it will be good to see how the states compete and perform. The course has been prepared keeping all international specifications in mind, and we are all set to go,” said competition manager Bilquis Mir, a former World Cupper canoeist and an Olympic judge.

The Khelo India Water Sports Festival is a new addition to the Khelo India calendar. In 2025, two new events have been added. The Khelo India Beach Games took place in Diu in May. As per the Khelo Bharat Niti, both the Water Games and Beach Games are aimed at promoting sports and attracting tourism.

For kayaking and canoeing, the last nationals held at Tehri (Uttarakhand) in November have been used as a qualifier. The top 15 in singles and doubles and the top eight fours will be participating in KIWSF. For rowing, the top eight from the nationals held in Bhopal in March this year will take part.

There will be international flavour as well. Arjun Lal Jat, an army rower who will represent Delhi, will be one of the main attractions. Jat, 28, has taken part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and won silver in the lightweight double sculls at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

The Water Games will see almost equal representation from men and women. Of the 409 athletes competing for medals, 202 will be female. Madhya Pradesh (44), Haryana (37), Odisha (34), and Kerala (33) will have the largest contingent at KIWSF 2025. Gujarat, Puducherry, and West Bengal will have the smallest teams.

Three gold medals—all in kayaking and canoeing—will be decided on Day 1 on Thursday. All 10 rowing finals are slotted on the final day on August 3. The opening ceremony, expected to be attended by the Union Minister of State Srimati Raksha Khadse, along with other dignitaries of Jammu and Kashmir, will be held Thursday evening from 6 PM onwards.

This water sports carnival will be the second Khelo India event in J&K after the Khelo India Winter Games held in Gulmarg. Launched in 2017-18, Khelo India is a mission to promote sports culture at the grassroots level and is also aimed at organised talent identification, structured sporting competitions, and infrastructure development.

India rejects Nepal’s claim over Lipulekh, says position consistent and clear

"We maintain constant watch": MEA on China-Pakistan-Bangladesh trilateral meeting

New Delhi, Aug 20: New Delhi on Wednesday dismissed Nepal’s objections to the resumption of border trade between India and China through the Lipulekh Pass, reiterating that Kathmandu’s territorial claims are “neither justified nor based on historical facts and evidence.”

The response came after Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs raised concerns over the reopening of trade through the Himalayan pass, which lies on the India–China border but is also claimed by Nepal.

“We have noted the comments of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal related to resumption of border trade between India and China through the Lipulekh Pass,” said Randhir Jaiswal, official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

“Our position in this regard has been consistent and clear. Border trade between India and China through Lipulekh pass had commenced in 1954 and has been going on for decades. This trade had been disrupted in recent years due to Covid and other developments, and both sides have now agreed to resume it.

As regards territorial claims, our position remains that such claims are neither justified nor based on historical facts and evidence. Any unilateral artificial enlargement of territorial claims is untenable. India remains open to constructive interaction with Nepal on resolving agreed outstanding boundary issues through dialogue and diplomacy,” the MEA statement read.

Earlier, in its statement, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintained, “The Government of Nepal has consistently urged the Government of India not to undertake activities such as road construction, expansion, or border trade in that area. The Government of Nepal has also conveyed to our friendly neighbor, China, that the territory belongs to Nepal.”

Media reported that Kathmandu further stressed its preference for diplomacy, noting that “in keeping with the spirit of close and friendly relations between Nepal and India, the Government of Nepal remains dedicated to resolving the boundary issue between the two countries on the basis of historical treaties, agreements, facts, maps, and evidence—through peaceful and diplomatic means:” reports media. Nepal has long claimed Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura as part of its territory, though the area remain under India.
