India rejects Bangladesh’s claim of Awami League offices on its soil

Indus Water Treaty will remain in abeyance until Pakistan ends cross-border terrorism: MEA spokesperson

New Delhi, Aug 20: New Delhi on Wednesday rejected allegations from Bangladesh that the Awami League was running offices in India, calling the charge “misplaced” and reiterating that no political activity against foreign countries is permitted on Indian soil.

Earlier in the day, the Interim Government of Bangladesh claimed that Awami League-linked offices had been set up in New Delhi and Kolkata and urged India to close them down. Dhaka alleged that such activity by “absconding leaders and activists of a banned political party” amounted to an “affront against the people and State of Bangladesh.”

Responding to media queries, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: “The Government of India is not aware of any anti-Bangladesh activities by purported members of the Awami League in India or of any action that is contrary to Indian law. The Government does not allow political activities against other countries to be carried out from Indian soil. The Press Statement by the Interim Government of Bangladesh is thus misplaced. India reiterates its expectation that free, fair and inclusive elections will be held at the earliest in Bangladesh to ascertain the will and mandate of the people.”

The sharp exchange comes amid already strained ties between the two neighbours. Bangladesh’s interim authorities have in recent weeks accused exiled political groups of attempting to mobilise across the border, while India has grown concerned about instability in Dhaka ahead of elections.

The row also carries a layer of irony, as Bangladesh itself has often been accused in the past of providing shelter to anti-India groups. For decades, insurgent outfits from India’s Northeast were reported to have operated training camps inside Bangladeshi territory, while Islamist networks such as HuJI-B were linked to terror plots in India. Despite longstanding cultural and economic ties, relations between New Delhi and Dhaka remain unsettled, with mutual suspicion compounding the uncertainty surrounding Bangladesh’s domestic political transition.

Israel plans new phase of war in Gaza

As Netanyahu moves toward full takeover of Gaza, Israel faces crisis of international credibility

Jerusalem, Aug 20: Israel is preparing to launch an expanded military operation in Gaza City, possibly in the coming days, even as negotiators scramble to bring Israel and Hamas to a ceasefire to end 22 months of fighting.

The Israeli military said Wednesday that the country’s defence minister has approved plans to begin a new phase of operations in some of Gaza’s most densely populated areas, and that it would call up 60,000 reservists and lengthen the service of an additional 20,000 reservists currently serving.

It comes as human rights groups warn that a humanitarian crisis could worsen in Gaza, where most residents have been displaced, vast neighbourhoods lie in ruins, and communities are facing the threat of famine.

A military official, speaking on the condition of anonymity in line with military regulations, said that the military will be operating in parts of Gaza City where the Israeli military has not yet operated and where it believes Hamas is still active.

The official said that Israeli troops are already operating in the Zeitoun and Jabaliya neighbourhoods of Gaza City to prepare the groundwork for the expanded operation, which is expected to receive approval from the chief of staff in the coming days.

Gaza City is Hamas’ main military and governing stronghold and Israeli troops will be targeting Hamas’ vast underground tunnel network, the official added.

Although Israel has targeted and killed much of Hamas’ senior leadership, parts of the militant group are actively regrouping and carrying out attacks, including launching rockets towards Israel, the official said.

Gaza City operation could begin within days

It remains unclear when the operation will begin, but it could be a matter of days. The official said 50,000 reservists will be called up in the coming month, one of the largest mobilizations in months.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has consistently said objective of the war is to secure the release of the remaining hostages and ensure Hamas and other militants can never again threaten Israel.

The planned offensive, first announced earlier this month, has heightened international condemnation of Israel and fuelled fears of another mass displacement among Palestinians.

Netanyahu said on August 9 that it would span parts of Gaza City and the central camps. Hundreds of thousands of displaced people are sheltering in the city and it holds some of the last remnants of critical infrastructure.

AP journalists saw small groups heading south from the city this week, but how many will voluntarily flee remains unclear. Some said they were waiting to see how events unfold before moving yet again, and many insist nowhere is safe from airstrikes.

Some exhausted reservists question war’s goals

The call-up comes as a growing campaign of exhausted reservists is accusing the government of perpetuating the war for political reasons and failing to bring home the remaining hostages.

The families of the hostages and former army and intelligence chiefs have also expressed opposition to the expanded operation in Gaza City. Most of the families of the hostages want an immediate ceasefire and worry an expanded assault could imperil bringing the 50 hostages still in Gaza home. Israel believes that 20 are still alive.

The former chiefs are sceptical the goal of completely destroying Hamas is attainable. Former Shin Bet head Yoram Cohen called it a “fantasy,” saying that “if anyone imagines that we can reach every terrorist and every pit and every weapon, and in parallel bring our hostages home — I think it is impossible.”

Hamas-led militants started the war when they attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251. Most of the hostages have been released in ceasefires or other deals. Hamas says it will only free the rest in exchange for a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal.

Mediation is underway in Cairo as worries grow about humanitarian crisis

Mediators and Hamas both said this week that Hamas leaders had agreed to cease-fire terms, though similar announcements have been made in the past that did not lead to ceasefires.

An Israeli official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media said that Israel is in constant contact with the mediators in an effort to secure the release of the hostages.

Netanyahu has repeatedly said he will oppose a deal that doesn’t include the “complete the defeat of Hamas.”

More than 62,000 people have been killed during Israel’s 22-month offensive, Gaza’s Health Ministry said on Monday. The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals. The ministry does not say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants, but says women and children make up around half of them.

In addition to that toll, 154 adults have died of malnutrition-related causes since late June, when the ministry began counting such deaths, and 112 children have died of malnutrition-related causes since the war began.

Gold drops Rs 400 to Rs 1,00,020/10 g, silver plunges Rs 1,500

Gold plunges Rs 1,000 amid sell-off in global markets

New Delhi, Aug 20: Gold prices dropped Rs 400 to Rs 1,00,020 per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday due to continuous selling by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had settled at Rs 1,00,420 per 10 grams in the previous market close.

In the local market, gold of 99.5 per cent purity slipped Rs 350 to Rs 99,700 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Wednesday. It had closed at Rs 1,00,050 per 10 grams on Tuesday.

“Gold prices extended losses on Wednesday as the US dollar continued to trade with minimal gains, surging to a one-week high. A decline in the geopolitical risk premium followed a positive outcome from President Donald Trump’s meetings with Vladimir Putin, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders.

“This development raised hopes for a potential resolution to the ongoing conflict, which appears to be the leading factor in the decline in gold prices in recent times,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst, Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

Additionally, silver prices plunged Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,12,500 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Wednesday. The white metal had ended at Rs 1,14,000 per kg on Tuesday.

In the overseas markets, spot gold was trading marginally higher at USD 3,326.04 per ounce.

“Gold prices inched lower to their lowest level in nearly three weeks as the dollar strengthened, while investors awaited US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s last speech at the Jackson Hole symposium on Friday.

“Meanwhile, the US dollar index climbed to its highest level in more than a week and USD/INR fell at 87 level, weighing further on domestic prices,” Manav Modi, Analyst, Precious Metal Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, said.

However, spot silver was trading at USD 37.07 per ounce, down by nearly 1 per cent in the global markets.

Investors will closely watch Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes to be released later in the day, which is anticipated to offer further insights into the central bank’s monetary policy stance and bullion price trajectory, Modi added.

Bandipora villagers say lives made ‘hell’ by monkey menace

Bandipora villagers say lives made ‘hell’ by monkey menace

Bandipora, Aug 19: “No one is taking our pleas seriously,” say residents of Ahatmulla village in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, who have long battled a worsening monkey menace.

Located near the forest belt in Chiternaar, villagers say they have repeatedly appealed to the administration and wildlife officials for help, but their cries have gone unheard.

“Each year the population of monkeys grows, and we have nowhere to go for safety,” lamented Maimoona Begum, a resident, during a protest outside the forest division office on Tuesday.

The villagers said they had approached “every authority” but no one had acted. “If they can’t do anything, then relocate us. We can’t even keep our doors and windows open,” another woman said.

Despite precautions, villagers said monkeys break into homes through chimneys and steal food. With most men working as labourers and orchardists, the women said agriculture too had been devastated.

“Children can’t play outside. Even stepping out for Fajr prayers or fetching bread from bakeries is a nightmare,” said one villager.

Orchards have been ruined, while monkey attacks on residents are on the rise. “This scar on my eyebrow is from a monkey attack while I was gardening,” said an elderly woman.

The villagers said they had exhausted every channel of appeal. “Either get rid of the monkeys or relocate us. Living here has become hell,” they added.

Deserted by pilgrims, Machail Mata base camp reels after Chisoti tragedy

J-K: Deserted by pilgrims, Machail Mata base camp reels after Chisoti tragedy

Gulabgarh, Aug 20: About 20 km from the cloudburst-hit Chisoti, the main base camp for pilgrims visiting the Machail Mata temple in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district tells a different but equally grim story.

The rows of roadside tin shops stand covered with polythene sheets while the shopkeepers owning concrete structures sit idle in the aftermath of the cloudburst on August 14 that left a trail of death and destruction in Chisoti, the last motorable village en route the Machail Mata temple.

With the annual yatra to the temple suspended following the disaster, the once-bustling market — the biggest in the Padder sub-division — wears a deserted look.

The stakeholders, including shopkeepers who stocked up for the pilgrimage season, or the restaurateurs, hotels owners and transporters who bought new vehicles on loan, are now a worried lot yet hopeful of a positive turnaround when the rescue operation ends.

Flash floods triggered by the cloudburst struck Chisoti last week, killing 65 persons, mostly pilgrims, and leaving 100 more injured. A large-scale search operation is underway for 39 persons still reported missing.

A makeshift market, a ‘langar’ (community kitchen) site for the pilgrims, 16 houses and government buildings, three temples, four water mills, a 30-metre-long bridge and over a dozen vehicles were also damaged in the incident.

“It (August 14) was the darkest day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, as many lives have been lost. Along with the human tragedy, the economy of Paddar also suffered losses worth crores of rupees,” Ashish Chouhan, a local businessman, told PTI.

Business has come to a grinding halt, leaving everyone linked with the yatra in deep distress, he said.

However, Chouhan said they have not lost hope and believe that everything will be normal once the rescue and relief operation gets over.

“The entire market is mourning… Few days back, it was bustling with sounds of religious chants and movement of 2,000-3,000 people — some going for the yatra, others returning,” Ramesh Kumar, owner of a fast food joint, said.

He said they were hardly getting time to rest given the heavy rush but the disaster changed everything.

“We pray for the departed souls. We know our business will revive with Mata’s blessings but those who are gone will never return. Our sympathies are with their families,” Kumar said.

The annual Machail Mata yatra, which began on July 25 and was scheduled to conclude on September 5, remained suspended for the seventh consecutive day on Wednesday.

The 8.5-km trek to the 9,500-foot-high shrine starts from Chisoti, about 90 km from Kishtwar town.

For many families, the annual pilgrimage meant big earnings, which helped them survive the year.

But the season has ended abruptly this time.

“We had lots of hope from the yatra. This is a remote pocket and the yatra was the only means of doing business. The guest houses and hotels are empty, so are the restaurants, eateries and shops selling puja ingredients,” Bipin Chouhan, who runs a restaurant in the market, said.

Ever since the disaster, he said, people in the market only hear blaring of sirens by ambulances coming from Chisoti.

However, Chouhan said, they consider business to be secondary because nothing can be compared to the loss of so many precious lives.

“We can only share the grief of the bereaved families,” he said.

The contrast is striking — while Chisoti reels under physical devastation, the base camp suffers from a quieter crisis, where livelihoods are not destroyed by floodwaters, but by pilgrims who have disappeared.

Amid uproar, Constitution Amendment Bill sent to Joint Committee of Parliament

Amid uproar, Constitution Amendment Bill sent to Joint Committee of Parliament

New Delhi, Aug 20: The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025′ were referred to the Joint Committee of Parliament after Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced them in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Before Lok Sabha was adjourned till 5pm, the Speaker Om Birla objected to behaviour of opposition members. The Speaker said members should not lower dignity of the House.

“People are watching. Opposition members had earlier objected to the introduction of three bills,” the speaker further added.

The bill was referred to a Joint Committee of the Houses consisting of 21 Members of this House to be nominated by the Speaker Lok sabha and 10 Members of Rajya Sabha to be nominated by Deputy Chairman.

Earlier in the day, opposition MPs tore and threw the copies of the three Bills towards Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha, which seek to remove the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers who are facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days.

Shah tabled the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. He also proposed sending the bllls to a joint committee of Parliament.

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025 seeks to amend section 54 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, to provide a legal framework for the removal of the Chief Minister or a Minister in case of arrest or detention in custody on account of serious criminal charges.

Several Opposition MPs opposed the bills amid huge sloganeering, prompting the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the House till 3 pm.

Opposing the Bills, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi said, “I stand to oppose the introduction of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025. This violates the principle of separation of powers and undermines the right of the people to elect a government. It gives executive agencies a free hand to act as judge and executioner based on flimsy allegations and suspicions.”

Congress MP KC Venugopal and Home Minister Amit Shah engaged in a verbal spat over the “morality” regarding the bills.Venugopal said, “This bill is meant to sabotage the basic principles of the Constitution. BJP members are saying that this bill is to bring morality into politics. Can I ask the Home Minister a question? When he was the Home Minister of Gujarat, he was arrested — did he uphold morality at that time?”

Replying to Venugopal, Shah recalled that false allegations were made against him.”Before I was arrested, I resigned on moral grounds, and until I was declared innocent by the court, I did not accept any constitutional position,” he said.

Amit Shah further requested the Speaker to refer the three Bills to a Joint Committee of the Houses consisting of 21 Members of the Lok Sabha to be nominated by the Speaker and 10 Members of the Rajya Sabha to be nominated by the Deputy Chairman.
