Jammu, Jul 17: Junior doctors in Government Medical College (GMC) hospital Jammu Thursday continued to be on strike amid protests for the second day against alleged assault on a couple of their colleagues by the attendants of a patient on July 16.

An FIR was registered in the case on Wednesday after the incident yet the junior doctors refused to join their duties till the arrest of the main accused in the alleged assault case.

Though senior doctors, all faculty members and Consultants performed duties in the Emergency and other wings, the functioning of GMC hospital Jammu remained affected and patients from far flung areas continued to suffer.

Mohd Taj, a patient from Rajouri, while sharing his plight, said that he had come all the way from the border district for bone and joints related treatment but the junior doctors refused to see him stating till the person who assaulted their colleague was not arrested, they would not see patients.

“Many patients like me have come from far-off places. If it continues like this, they will die without treatment. The Government should immediately intervene to save innocent patients craving for immediate attention,” he said.

Som Nath Dabgotra, a social activist, blamed the administration for not being able to end the stalemate. “Patients are suffering. FIR has already been registered. Doctors are seeking arrest of the accused. It takes time in fulfilling the procedures. Doctors should resume duties till then. It’s criminal to see patients suffering.

Mudasir, an attendant with a patient from Sudh Mahadev in Chenani, too sought immediate intervention of the administration by resolving the issue with junior doctors to address the plight of patients from distant places.

Junior doctors deployed in the Emergency wing of Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital, Jammu on Wednesday evening went on a flash strike to protest an alleged “act of violence against doctors by the attendants of a patient.”

To manage the crisis situation following their flash strike and in the interest of patient care, Principal and Dean, GMC Jammu, Dr Ashutosh Gupta directed all the Clinical and Paraclinical Heads of Departments to ensure the deployment of their faculty members and Consultants in the Emergency GMC Hospital, Jammu till junior doctors would resume their duties.

Later in a press conference, GMC, Jammu administration condemned the “act of violence” against doctors by the attendants of a patient in the Emergency.

“In a gruesome incident that happened on July 16,2025, the attendants of the patients resorted to physical and verbal violence against doctors on duty in the emergency. The incident took place after the death of a terminally ill patient,” Dr Gupta said.

“It is pertinent to mention here that a patient had been referred back from PGI to the Government Medical College, Jammu with the following complications of brain haemorrhage. As per PGI treatment discharge slip, it was clearly mentioned that the patient was suffering from massive brain haemorrhage and poor prognosis was explained to the attendants of the patient,” he said.

Dr Ashutosh said that the attendants were advised to get “basic medical and nursing care” at a local hospital. However, in GMC, Jammu, the patient was offered the best possible treatment.

“On the 5th day of the admission, the patient expired due to respiratory arrest. Unfortunately, the patient’s attendants attacked physically and verbally a lady doctor and other staff of GMC, Jammu. The CCTV cameras clearly show attendants of the patient kicking and beating the lady doctor,” he said.

Meanwhile Indian Medical Association (IMA) Jammu and GMC Doda doctors too have supported the protesting junior doctors.

Stock markets close lower on selling in IT stocks, fresh foreign fund outflows

Sensex, Nifty open lower as Trump tariffs trigger global sell-off

Mumbai, Jul 17: Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty settled lower on Thursday following selling in IT and banking shares and investors remaining in a wait-and-watch mode ahead of the outcome of the US-India trade talks.

The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 375.24 points or 0.45 per cent to settle at 82,259.24. During the day, it fell by 415.21 points or 0.50 per cent to 82,219.27.

The 50-share NSE Nifty closed lower by 100.60 points or 0.40 per cent to 25,111.45.

Fresh foreign fund outflows and subdued quarterly earnings dented investors’ sentiment, experts said.

Among Sensex firms, Tech Mahindra declined nearly 3 per cent after its June quarter earnings failed to cheer investors. IT services firm Tech Mahindra reported a nearly 34 per cent year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 1,140.6 crore for the quarter ending June 30, 2025, on the back of growth in communications and financial services verticals.

Infosys, HCL Tech, Eternal, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Consultancy Services and Axis Bank were also among the laggards. However, Tata Steel, Trent, Titan and Tata Motors were among the gainers.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 1,858.15 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data.

“Indian equity benchmarks ended marginally lower as investors exercised caution amid subdued Q1 earnings announcements, particularly in the technology and banking sectors. Market participants remained sidelined due to elevated valuations of large-cap stocks and FII outflows owing to the uncertainty regarding US-India trade deal; however, any positive developments could amplify market sentiment,” Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said.

The BSE smallcap gauge climbed 0.30 per cent and midcap index went up by 0.07 per cent.

Among BSE sectoral indices, BSE Focused IT tanked 1.47 per cent, followed by IT (1.33 per cent), teck (1.06 per cent), bankex (0.51 per cent) and utilities (0.25 per cent).

Realty jumped 1.22 per cent, metal climbed 0.62 per cent, commodities (0.42 per cent), healthcare (0.28 per cent) and consumer discretionary (0.25 per cent).

“Markets largely remained in the negative zone amid uncertainty over the impending announcement of the India-US tariff outcome, as investors resorted to selling in banking, IT and oil & gas shares that led the downfall in key benchmarks. Once the deal is announced and if it suits the interests of both the countries, there will be a relief in the markets and we may see short-term spurt, else the sluggish to pessimist mood could continue.

Syrian troops withdraw from Suwayda amid ceasefire efforts as Israel strikes Damascus

New Delhi, Jul 17: Syrian government forces began withdrawing from the southern city of Suwayda following a tentative ceasefire deal with Druze militias after days of intense clashes. The move came hours after Israeli airstrikes hit Damascus, targeting government installations in a sharp escalation of regional tensions.

At least three people were killed in the strikes on the Syrian capital, which Israel said were carried out in support of the country’s Druze population, an Arab minority group caught in violent confrontations with pro-government forces.

The Syrian government confirmed that troops began leaving Suwayda following an agreement with local Druze leadership. Despite the truce efforts, the humanitarian toll remains severe. According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, as reported by CNN, at least 169 people have been killed and more than 200 injured in recent days. The violence included Israeli airstrikes, shelling, and reported extrajudicial killings.

In Damascus, the Israeli strikes targeted several government buildings, including the Ministry of Defence. Israeli officials confirmed the operations, saying they also struck areas near the presidential palace. CNN reported that the United States has been actively engaging with all sides to defuse tensions and broker a ceasefire. The Syrian government announced it had reached a new agreement with Druze leaders, though some factions within the community rejected it, casting doubt on its durability.

The situation has drawn international concern. The United Nations and several regional powers, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, condemned the Israeli strikes. Iran described the attacks as “unhinged aggression.” European Union leaders also urged restraint and respect for Syria’s sovereignty. In Suwayda, media reported that residents are facing severe disruptions in basic services, including power outages, limited communication access, and water shortages. The violence follows a wave of unrest after the fall of the Assad regime late last year and has further complicated the fragile political and security landscape in Syria.

Serving Army soldier arrested in Uri for espionage

J&K Police arrest six persons for spreading misleading information on social media platforms

Srinagar, Jul 17: Punjab Police’s State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) with assistance of Jammu & Kashmir Police has arrested a serving Army Uri Sector of Baramulla In espionage case.

The soldier has been arrested in an ongoing espionage investigation being carried out by the Punjab Police’s State Special Operation Cell (SSOC). Police said that a soldier by SSOC of Punjab Police was arrested on charges of leaking classified military information to Pakistan.

The soldier, identified as Devinder Singh, hails from Nihalgarh village in Sangrur district of Punjab. He was arrested from Uri in Baramulla district, where he was posted in an Army battalion. “ We assisted Punjab Police,” a senior officer from north Kashmir told Greater kashmir. “After legal formalities he was handed over to them.”

Reports said that Singh’s arrest is the latest breakthrough in a broader investigation into an espionage racket involving current and former Army personnel. His role, they said, came to light during the interrogation of Gurpreet Singh, a former Indian Army soldier, who was arrested earlier on similar charges.

Gurpreet Singh, also known by aliases “Guri” or “Fauji”, was taken into custody while he was lodged in Ferozepur Jail. Investigators allege that despite being in prison, Gurpreet maintained contacts with operatives across the border and was instrumental in transmitting sensitive Army documents to Pakistan.

During questioning, they said, Gurpreet revealed that Devinder Singh had assisted in gathering material. The two had met in 2017 during Army training at a camp and maintained contact over the years. They were later posted together in Sikkim and Jammu and Kashmir.

This is not the first time the Punjab Police have cracked down on espionage activities linked to Pakistan. Over the past few years, there have been multiple arrests involving Indian nationals accused of spying, particularly in border states like Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir, where military deployments are significant.
