Over 20 monkeys attack and kill elderly man in Bihar’s Madhubani

Srinagar, Aug 18: A 67-year-old man was reportedly attacked by a group of over 20 monkeys while he was collecting firewood. The incident occurred unexpectedly, leaving the man severely injured as the monkeys swarmed him.

By the time people gathered to rescue him, Ramnath Chaudhary, a retired clerk of the now-closed Lohat Sugar Mill, was badly injured. He was taken to Madhubani Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

The incident triggered panic in the area. On being informed by local mukhiya Ramkumar Yadav, Pandaul circle officer Purushottam Kumar and police station in-charge Md Nadeem visited the village and urged the forest department to capture the monkeys.

Such aggressive encounters have raised growing concerns about human-wildlife conflict, especially in areas where monkey populations are increasing and encroaching on human habitats.

Officials rule out flood threat in J&K

Srinagar, Aug 18: The authorities on Monday said that water level in the Jhelum and its tributaries is being closely monitored, and there is no immediate flood threat in the Valley.

An official said, there is currently no flood risk in Jammu and Kashmir, and water level is far below danger mark.

According to the latest gauge readings, the river Jhelum stands at: Sangam (21’/25′) = 1.89 ft; Pampore (4.5/5.0) = (-)0.59 m; Munshi Bagh (18’/21′) = 4.47 ft; Asham (14.0’/16.5) = 3.69 ft.

For tributaries, the data shows: Vishow Nallah at Khudwani (7.75/8.50) = 2.44 m; Rambiyara Nallah at Wachi (5.4/5.7) = (-)0.36 m; Lidder Nallah at Batkoot (1.5/1.65) = 0.17 m; Doodhganga Nallah at Barzulla (3.65/3.8) = 0.60 m; Sindh Nallah at Doderhama (3.65/3.9) = 0.75 m.

Meanwhile, independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng also ruled out any possibility of a major flood situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

“There is no flood threat in either the Kashmir or Jammu region. Overall rainfall will remain moderate, though a few pockets may witness intense showers capable of triggering flash floods,” Faizan told KNO.

He added cloud formations are currently developing over north Pakistan, where much of the precipitation is expected, though parts of Jammu and Kashmir are also likely to receive considerable rainfall.

“Some models indicate that areas around Bandipora, Ganderbal and Srinagar may experience high-intensity showers by tomorrow morning. Hence, while intense showers or flash floods cannot be completely ruled out, they will remain highly localized,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) issued an advisory to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the prevailing weather conditions.

“In light of recent cloudburst incidents, all Chief Education Officers and Heads of Institutions are directed to implement Standard Operating Procedures to ensure the safety of students and staff,” the advisory reads.

The DSEK has directed schools located near rivers, streams, and lakes to stay on high alert, prepare evacuation plans, monitor water levels, and maintain close coordination with disaster management authorities.

It further warned that any failure to comply with these directions will be treated as a serious lapse, with accountability fixed on the concerned Head of Institution. (KNO)

AI helped Maharashtra police solve a hit-and-run case in just 36 hours

AI helped Maharashtra police solve a hit-and-run case in just 36 hours

Srinagar, Aug 18: A man had very few details to share about an accient. All he knew was that the truck that ran over his wife in Nagpur had red markings, but he couldn’t identify its size or make. Using artificial intelligence (AI), the police managed to arrest the accused within 36 hours.

The victim was able to provide “very minimal information”, Harsh Poddar, Superintendent of Police, Nagpur Rural, told NDTV.

“What was done here was that CCTV footage, or as we call it metadata, of three separate toll nakas, which were at a distance of 15-20 km from each other, was collected and it was analysed using two AI algorithms. Both of which were based on a technology called Computer Visual,” Mr Poddar told Ndtv.

On Raksha Bandhan, August 9, the man and his wife were riding a bike when a speeding truck struck them in Nagpur. The woman fell onto the road and was tragically run over by the truck, which then fled the scene. In a heartbreaking response, the man tied his wife’s body to his bike—a distressing video of the incident has since gone viral—as he made his way to their village in Madhya Pradesh.

Maharashtra has created a special purpose vehicle named MARVEL (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement), the first state-level police AI system in the country. It is owned wholly by the state.

The officer explained that the first algorithm they did was analysed the total CCTV footage to pull out and identify trucks with red markings. The second one analysed the average speed of all these trucks to be able to give an alert as to which truck could be involved. On that basis, one truck was identified. Then a team from Nagpur rural police arrested the accused and seized the truck from the Gwalior-Kanpur highway, which is about 700 km from Nagpur. Now we arrested the accused and the case has been cracked within 36 hours using AI.

“We’ve been collaborating with 13 different departments to develop AI-driven solutions. Since data is the main fuel for artificial intelligence—and the government holds vast amounts of it—we’ve been analysing this data to build solutions that work across the entire ecosystem” the officer had told NDTV

When asked how AI differs from traditional physical investigations, the officer explained that technology significantly accelerates the process. “Data that would take hours or days to examine manually can now be analysed within minutes, helping us arrive at actionable solutions much faster,” he said.

Genes, binge drinking, stress behind surging heart-related deaths in young adults

Genes, binge drinking, stress behind surging heart-related deaths in young adults

New Delhi, Aug 16: A poor lifestyle with lack of sleep, binge drinking, and high stress, coupled with genes, is playing a significant role in the rising heart-related deaths in India, said experts on Saturday.

Recently, an increasing number of heart-related deaths have been reported in the country. These have also been among people who are seemingly fit and are maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“Not all can be called heart attacks. About 20 per cent of the heart-related deaths in India are because of certain genes,” said Dr Rajiv Bhal, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

He also blamed “binge drinking (alcohol) among the younger generation, silent hypertension, increasing stress, and a lack of proper sleep, as well as childhood obesity” for the surge in heart-related deaths.

Further, he stressed that heavy exercise in gyms, especially by people with faulty genes, can contribute to heart-related deaths.

Bhal also suggested six things for good health: “healthy physical activity, no smoking, better sleep, proper diet, reducing stress, and doing some kind of meditation”.

Dr. J.P.S. Sawhney, Chairperson of Cardiology at a leading hospital in the national capital, stated the two genetic causes that are highly prevalent and linked to cardiovascular disease in India — familial hypercholesterolemia and elevated lipoprotein(a).

The global prevalence of familial hypercholesterolemia is approximately 1 in 250. In India, it is responsible for heart attacks below the age of 40 in 15 per cent of cases.

On the other hand, elevated lipoprotein(a) is present in 25 per cent of the general population in India.

“We have observed that elevated lipoprotein(a) levels — above 50 mg/dL — are common in young heart attack patients and are directly linked to the severity of coronary artery disease,” the noted cardiologist told IANS.

Sawhney explained that the diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia is ideally done by genetic testing.

“However, since this is not easily available in most parts of the country, we use the Dutch Lipid Clinical Network (DLCN) Criteria for diagnosis. The importance of diagnosing familial hypercholesterolemia lies in not only identifying the index patient but also performing cascade screening of siblings and their children by checking fasting lipid profiles,” he said.

If the cholesterol level is high, we consider them carriers and start treatment early in life — as early as two years of age — to lower cholesterol levels. Otherwise, these patients are at high risk of developing premature heart attacks. By performing cascade screening, we can prevent premature heart attacks in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, the cardiologist told IANS.

In the case of elevated lipoprotein(a), there is currently no specific treatment for it.

“We are awaiting the results of ongoing trials on a special group of drugs, expected in 2026, which may provide targeted therapy. At present, for those with high lipoprotein(a) — more than 50 mg/dL — we recommend aggressive control of other risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol,” the expert said.

Search for missing enters fifth day in cloudburst-hit Kishtwar village despite heavy rain

Kishtwar cloudburst: J-K authorities identify 21 bodies

Chisoti, Aug 18: Braving heavy rains and difficult terrain, rescuers pressed on with the large-scale search operation to trace those buried under debris in this cloudburst-hit remote village of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar on the fifth day on Monday, officials said.

Donning raincoats, the rescue teams were seen working at multiple locations, especially the major impact spot near a langar (community kitchen) site, despite the downpour, sifting through the rubble using heavy machinery, including earth movers and sniffer dogs.

Cloudburst struck Chisoti, the last motorable village en route to the Machail Mata temple, on August 14, killing 61 people, including three CISF personnel and one Special Police Officer, and leaving over 100 others injured. The number of missing people has been reported as around 50 after a fresh revision of the list.

The flash-floods triggered by the cloudburst left a trail of destruction, flattening a makeshift market, a langar site for the annual Machail Mata yatra, damaging 16 houses and government buildings, three temples, four water mills, a 30-metre-long bridge, besides over a dozen vehicles.

“Today is the fifth day of the operation, and combined efforts are underway to recover the mortal remains of the missing persons. The weather is challenging in view of the rain. We also have a warning (of heavy rains) for the day, but still we are trying our best,” a CISF officer said. The joint teams of police, army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), CISF, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), civil administration, and local volunteers are engaged in the rescue efforts.

Army engineers on Sunday built a Bailey bridge over Chisoti nullah, providing much-needed connectivity to the village and the Machail Mata shrine. The Army has also inducted a couple of all-terrain vehicles as part of the efforts to intensify the rescue and relief operation, officials said.

The rescuers conducted about half a dozen controlled explosions over the last two days to blow up giant boulders hampering the search.

The annual Machail Mata yatra, which began on July 25 and was scheduled to conclude on September 5, remained suspended for the fifth consecutive day on Sunday.

The 8.5-km trek to the 9,500-foot-high shrine starts from Chisoti, located about 90 km from Kishtwar town.

The rescuers are utilising over a dozen earth-movers and other heavy equipment, while the NDRF mobilised its resources, including dog squads, to speed up the rescue operation.

Zelensky reaches Washington, European leaders have started arriving for high-stakes talks with Trump

Zelensky reaches Washington, European leaders have started arriving for high-stakes talks with Trump

New Delhi, Aug 18: Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in the US capital, Washington, DC, for what is being billed as one of the most consequential diplomatic gatherings since the Russia-Ukraine war began around three years ago. Zelensky will join several key European leaders at the White House today, where they are set to hold intensive talks with President Donald Trump on a possible roadmap to end the war.

The meeting comes against a backdrop of sharply worded remarks by Trump, who just hours before Zelensky’s arrival used his Truth Social platform to lay down red lines.

“President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight,” Trump wrote. “Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!”

The US president’s comments underline the pressure Zelensky faces in Washington. Kyiv and its European allies have been pushing for firm US security guarantees as part of any settlement, particularly after a senior US envoy said on Sunday that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin had tentatively signalled openness to a “Nato-like” security pact for Ukraine, BBC reported.

Trump’s own excitement about the talks was evident. Referring to today’s gathering, he posted: “Big day at the White House [on Monday]. Never had so many European Leaders at one time. My great honor to host them!!!”

The summit follows Trump’s high-profile meeting with Putin in Alaska last week. The White House has described today’s consultations as a critical step in testing whether Moscow and Kyiv can move closer to a ceasefire arrangement. Those expected at the table alongside Zelensky are: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

In a fresh update on Truth Social, Trump again sought to put himself at the centre of the moment. “It will be a big day, and a great honour to host so many great European leaders,” he said.

He added that since his election last year, the United States has become the “hottest country anywhere in the world.” For Zelensky, the stakes could not be higher. He arrives in Washington seeking to balance Trump’s demands with the assurances Ukraine needs to guarantee its sovereignty in the long run.
