Gold falls Rs 200 to Rs 98,670/10 g; silver declines Rs 500

Gold climbs Rs 1,400 to Rs 96,450 per 10 g; silver jumps Rs 1,000

New Delhi, July 17: Gold prices fell by Rs 200 to Rs 98,670 per 10 grams in the national capital on Thursday due to unabated selling by stockists amid subdued demand trend in the overseas markets, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity went lower by Rs 500 to close at Rs 98,870 per 10 grams on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, gold of 99.5 per cent purity declined by Rs 200 to Rs 98,200 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Thursday. It had finished at Rs 98,400 per 10 grams in the previous market close.

As per the association, silver prices diminished by Rs 500 to Rs 1,10,500 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Thursday. The white metal had ended at Rs 1,11,000 per kg on Wednesday.

“Gold prices slipped as safe-haven demand eased after US-China tensions cooled with the lifting of the AI chip ban, and President Donald Trump signalled that a trade deal with India is close.

“Meanwhile, steep 30 per cent tariffs were imposed on Mexico and the European Union, the possibility of further negotiations kept market fears in check. This has reduced the urgency for safety trades like gold, weighing on prices,” Abans Financial Services’ Chief Executive Officer Chintan Mehta said.

However, the broader uncertainty from aggressive tariff actions continues to offer some underlying support, limiting the downside for the yellow metal, Mehta added.

Globally, spot gold fell by USD 21.55 or 0.64 per cent to USD 3,326.05 per ounce.

“Gold edged lower as traders turned cautious ahead of US macroeconomic data, including retail sales data, employment numbers, and speeches by several Fed Reserve officials,” Kaynat Chainwala, AVP-Commodity Research at Kotak Securities, said.

According to Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency at LKP Securities, gold traded weak below USD 3,330 per ounce as the dollar index strengthened above 98.75, following higher-than-expected US CPI inflation data, which dampened hopes of an immediate interest rate cut by the Fed.

Spot silver went lower by 0.11 per cent to trade at USD 37.86 per ounce in the international markets.

India buys oil from 40 nations, not worried by US rider on Russian oil: Hardeep Puri

0

New Delhi, July 17: Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday said India has diversified its sources for buying oil in the global market, due to which the government is not “unduly worried” over any US crackdown on Russia’s oil exports.

Speaking at the Urja Varta 2025, the minister said India currently buys oil from 40 nations, as compared to 27 countries in 2007, and the global market is well-supplied.

“There is a lot of oil available in the market. Iran and Venezuela are currently under sanctions. But are they going to be under sanctions forever? Many countries, including Brazil, Canada and others, are ramping up output. I am not unduly worried about supplies as of now. We have diversified our sources,” Puri said.

The minister’s statement came against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump announcing that secondary sanctions would be imposed on countries buying Russian oil.

On July 15, Trump had threatened to impose serious trade restrictions on Russia unless a peace deal with Ukraine is reached within 50 days. Trump said US tariffs on Russian exports would be increased to 100 per cent, while also threatening to impose secondary sanctions on countries such as India and China that buy oil from Russia.

On Trump’s threats, Puri said, “I have heard these threats. Some statements are made to ensure two disputants settle an issue.”

Puri further stated that India’s oil purchases from Moscow had played an important role in stabilising prices in the global market.

He said crude oil prices could have skyrocketed to $130 per barrel in the absence of India-Russia oil trade when the Ukraine war began in 2022.

Prior to the Russia-Ukraine war, India used to buy a mere 0.2 per cent of its crude imports from Moscow. This, today, stands close to 40 per cent.

The minister said that Russian crude was always under a price cap of $60 per barrel but never under sanctions. India continues to stay firm on its stance of not buying crude oil from a country which is under sanctions, said Puri.

“Russia is one of the largest crude producers with over nine million barrels/day. Imagine the chaos if this oil, amounting to about 10 per cent of the global oil supply of around 97 million, vanished from the market. It would have forced the world to reduce its consumption, and since the consumers would be chasing reduced supplies, the prices would’ve spiralled to over $120-130,” Puri said earlier this month.

New AI tool more accurate than cardiologists to spot hidden heart disease

New AI tool more accurate than cardiologists to spot hidden heart disease

New Delhi, July 17: A newly developed artificial intelligence (AI) tool, that uses data from the low-cost electrocardiogram (ECG), may be more accurate in identifying hidden heart disease than cardiologists, according to US researchers.

Structural heart disease, including valve disease, congenital heart disease, and other issues that impair heart function, affects millions of people worldwide. These often remain undetected due to lack of a routine and affordable screening test.

To address the gap, a team from Columbia University in the US has developed an AI-powered screening tool, EchoNext, that detects structural heart diseases using ordinary ECG data.

EchoNext identifies patients who should have an ultrasound (echocardiogram) — a non-invasive test that is used to diagnose structural heart problems. In the study, published in the journal Nature, the tool was found to be more accurate than cardiologists.

“We have colonoscopies, we have mammograms, but we have no equivalents for most forms of heart disease,” said Pierre Elias, Assistant Professor of Medicine and biomedical informatics at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

EchoNext was designed to analyse ordinary ECG data to determine when follow-up with cardiac ultrasound is warranted.

“EchoNext basically uses the cheaper test to figure out who needs the more expensive ultrasound,” said Elias.

“It detects diseases cardiologists can’t detect from an ECG. We think that ECG plus AI has the potential to create an entirely new screening paradigm,” the researcher added.

The deep learning model was trained on more than 1.2 million ECG-echocardiogram pairs from 230,000 patients.

In a validation study across four hospital systems, including several NewYork-Presbyterian campuses in the US, the screening tool demonstrated high accuracy in identifying structural heart problems, including heart failure due to cardiomyopathy, valve disease, pulmonary hypertension, and severe thickening of the heart.

In a comparison with 13 cardiologists on 3,200 ECGs, EchoNext accurately identified 77 per cent of structural heart problems. In contrast, cardiologists making a diagnosis with the ECG data had an accuracy of 64 per cent.

“Using our technology, we may be able to turn the estimated 400 million ECGs that will be performed worldwide this year into 400 million chances to screen for structural heart disease and potentially deliver life-saving treatment at the most opportune time,” Elias said.

Indian Army responds swiftly to assist Amarnath Yatris stranded after landslide, heavy rains

Srinagar, Jul 17: Braving unforgiving weather, the Indian Army saved over 3,500 Amarnath Yatris who were stranded due to a massive landslide near Z Morh between Rayalpathri and Brarimarg on the evening of July 16, officials said today.

The landslide, triggered by continuous heavy rainfall around 7:15 PM, abruptly halted all movement along the Yatra route, leaving thousands of pilgrims trapped in the treacherous terrain. Reacting with urgency, the Army detachment stationed at Brarimarg launched a coordinated rescue and relief operation, preventing a potential disaster.

Around 500 pilgrims were immediately given shelter in Army tents and provided with tea and drinking water. An additional 3,000 yatris were accommodated at various langars between Brarimarg and Z Morh, where volunteers and Army personnel worked together to ensure basic needs were met.

In one particularly life-threatening situation, a sick pilgrim was found stranded between two landslide-prone zones at Rayalpathri. Despite darkness, rain, and unstable terrain, the Army’s Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) conducted a difficult manual stretcher evacuation, carrying the patient to safety. The individual was then shifted to an ambulance for further medical care, read a statement, issued by the army.

Officials confirmed that the Camp Director at Brarimarg and the Company Commander of the Indian Army remained present on-site throughout the operation, personally overseeing rescue efforts. The weather at both Rayalpathri and Brarimarg remains lightly rainy, but the situation is currently stable and under control.
