They said that light medium and heavy motor vehicles crossed the Nashri and Banihal tunnels although at a slow pace. SC to hear on Monday plea to save Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya from execution in Yemen

New Delhi, July 14: The Supreme Court is slated to hear on Monday a plea seeking directions to the Centre to use diplomatic channels to save Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya from execution.

Indian national Nimisha Priya, who has been sentenced to death in Yemen for the murder of a Yemeni national, Talal Abdo Mehd and has been in prison for the last three years, is tentatively set to be executed on July 16.

As per the causelist published on the website of the apex court, a Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta will take up the plea filed by “Save Nimisha Priya Action Council” for hearing on July 14.

The plea, referring to Sharia law, stated that the death penalty could be negotiated with the payment of ‘diya (blood money)’ to the victim’s family.

On Thursday, a ‘Partial Court Working Days Bench’ of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi directed listing of the matter on July 14 after it was mentioned for urgent hearing by senior advocate Ragenth Basant.

The Justice Dhulia-led Bench directed that a copy of the petition be served to the Attorney General of India, the highest law officer of the Centre.

Considering the nature and urgency of the matter, the top court asked the Union government to inform it about the steps taken in the case on the date fixed.

Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kollengode in Kerala’s Palakkad district, had moved to Yemen in 2008 to support her daily-wage labourer parents. She worked in several hospitals and eventually decided to open her own clinic.

In 2017, a dispute arose between her and her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, after she reportedly opposed his alleged attempts to misappropriate funds.

According to her family, Nimisha allegedly injected Mahdi with sedatives to retrieve her confiscated passport. Tragically, an overdose led to his death. She was arrested while attempting to flee the country and was convicted of murder in 2018. In 2020, a trial court in Sanaa sentenced her to death, and Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council upheld the verdict in November 2023, though it left open the option of blood money.

The mother of Priya, Prema Kumari (57), has been tirelessly campaigning to secure a waiver of the death penalty. She has also travelled to Sanaa to negotiate the payment of blood money to the victim’s family. Her efforts have been supported by the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, a group of NRI social workers based in Yemen.

Pedal for Drug-Free Kashmir: Emerge Academy leads anti-drug cycling rally in Srinagar

Srinagar, Jul 13: In a stirring show of solidarity against the region’s growing drug menace, students from Emerge Academy took to the streets of Srinagar for a cycling rally titled “Pedal for Drug-Free Kashmir”.

As per a statement issued on Sunday, Organised in collaboration with CEMTAC CEMENTS, the event aimed to raise awareness about the alarming rise in substance abuse among Kashmiri youth, as recent figures reveal a deeply entrenched crisis impacting thousands across the Valley.

The awareness campaign, aimed at highlighting the growing menace of drug addiction in the Valley, flagged off from Parray Pora and culminated at the iconic Nishat Garden, covering a vibrant stretch that carried a solemn message — Kashmir must unite against drugs.

The event was flagged off by Haamid Mufti, Chairman of Emerge Academy, who emphasised the urgent need for collective action against the increasing infiltration of drugs into Kashmiri society. “It is no longer a hidden crisis,” Mufti said. “This is a war at our doorsteps. We must not be silent spectators.”

The event received wholehearted support from various civil and government stakeholders. Certificates of participation and awards to winners were distributed at the culmination point by Laila Qurashi, founder of The Grooming Kashmir — a leading de-addiction and rehabilitation centre in the Valley. Known for her work with youth and recovery programmes, Qurashi addressed the students, praising their initiative and encouraging consistent community participation in such social causes.

“These small steps turn into movements. And movements shape societies,” Qurashi remarked while handing over medals to the top cyclists.

The cycling event marked a beginning, a first push of the pedal in a journey toward a healthier, safer Kashmir. What made the initiative more impactful was the multi-agency support it received. The organisers extended deep gratitude to DC Srinagar, SSP Srinagar, SSP Traffic, Director School Education Kashmir, and the J&K Health Department.

“Their assistance ensured the event’s smooth conduct and safety, allowing students to raise their voices and pedals without fear or disruption,” read the statement.

The sponsor of the event, CEMTAC CEMENTS, was praised for supporting a social cause that goes beyond business. “When corporates step in to back such initiatives, it sends a strong message,” said Haamid Mufti, President of Coaching Centres of Kashmir.

Special thanks were also extended to “The Grooming Kashmir” and its founder
Laila Qurashi, whose unwavering commitment to addiction recovery in Kashmir has made her a respected voice in the region.

Emerge Academy has vowed that this was just the beginning of its drug awareness campaign. In the coming weeks, the academy plans to roll out monthly student-led awareness drives, school-based workshops on drug prevention, collaboration with rehabilitation centres for screenings, scholarships for meritorious students and advocacy for better addiction treatment infrastructure in Kashmir.

Haamid Mufti, speaking at the event’s conclusion, stated, “We cannot wait for miracles to happen or government-only interventions. The change has to come from us, the teachers, the parents, the students, and civil society. We are all responsible.”

He added that the fight against drugs is not a sprint but a marathon, and initiatives like Pedal for Drug-Free Kashmir must keep the momentum alive.

Odisha campus self-immolation sparks outrage

0
Set to be deported, Pak national dies of cardiac arrest in Amritsar

New Delhi, Jul 13: The self-immolation of a 20-year-old undergraduate student at Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, after allegedly facing prolonged sexual harassment, has triggered a political storm in Odisha, with mounting public anger and sharp criticism from opposition leaders. The incident, reported by The Hindu, has put the state government under severe pressure to act.

The student, who sustained 90% burn injuries after setting herself on fire outside the principal’s chamber on Saturday (July 12), remains in critical condition and is currently on a ventilator at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. State Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling and Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj have visited the hospital to monitor her condition, reports The Hindu.

According to The Hindu, the young woman had accused Assistant Professor Samir Kumar Sahu, head of the Education Department, of repeatedly seeking sexual favours and threatening to ruin her academic career if she did not comply. Despite multiple complaints, including a desperate social media appeal on July 1 tagging senior officials, no substantive action was taken.

She reportedly informed the college principal in writing about a previous suicide attempt. Disturbing footage showing the moment of the immolation and students rushing to save her has since gone viral, fuelling further outrage.

The accused professor has been arrested, and the university principal, Dilip Ghosh, has been suspended. However, the measures have not quelled public anger or political backlash.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, upon returning from New Delhi, visited AIIMS Bhubaneswar alongside Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo. He assured strict action based on the findings of the inquiry. “We will take all possible steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents,” Majhi said.

Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the Congress and BJD, have intensified their protests, with party leaders meeting the victim’s family and attempting to march to the residences of the CM and Higher Education Minister. A scuffle broke out between protestors and police during the march. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the case.

This is the second such incident this year in Odisha involving alleged administrative inaction in a campus sexual harassment case. Earlier, a Nepalese student in a private university died by suicide after her repeated complaints against a male classmate were reportedly ignored.

The self-immolation incident has now become a flashpoint in Odisha’s political and social discourse, raising urgent questions about campus safety, institutional accountability, and the state’s handling of gender-based complaints.

New BrahMos testing facility in Lucknow will strengthen India’s self-reliance: Rajnath Singh

"Op Sindoor led to increase in demand for our Indigenous defence products": Rajnath Singh

Lucknow, Jul 13: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said the newly inaugurated integration and testing facility of BrahMos Aerospace in Lucknow will strengthen the country’s self-reliance in the defence sector. Singh said this at an event in Lucknow where he unveiled the statue of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Chandra Bhanu Gupta at the National PG College and released a postage stamp.

“Just a few days ago, I inaugurated the integration and testing facility of BrahMos Aerospace in Lucknow. This facility will strengthen our country’s self-reliance in the defence sector and also create employment,” he said. He praised the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh due to which investments are increasing and industries are flourishing in the state.

“Historical changes are taking place in infrastructure. Expressway, airport, metro, medical college’”all these are presenting a new picture of development.” the defence minister said.

Singh, who is the Lok Sabha MP from Lucknow, also showered praises on former UP CM Chandra Bhanu Gupta. Gupta served as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for three terms.
Singh said, “Chandra Bhanu Gupta ji started as a simple worker in the freedom movement and made a place in the hearts of millions of people through his sacrifice, commitment and leadership.

Chandra Bhanu Gupta’s life tells us that power does not mean only position or authority, but responsibility, sacrifice and protecting the interests of the public. “His life also gives us the message that there may be differences in politics but there should not be animosity,” he said.

Singh also said that Gupta was more of a public servant than a leader. “He was not just the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh on multiple occasions, but he was among the leaders who emerged from the Indian freedom struggle,” Singh said.

Singh, who is also the former UP CM, said, “Whenever we discuss the glorious past of Uttar Pradesh, the name of Chandra Bhanu Gupta ji is taken prominently. Today, when we are releasing this postage stamp, it is not only a tribute to the name of Chandra Bhanu Gupta ji, it is also a tribute to his high life values.”

“The administrative system that is working in the country and the state today, people like Chandra Bhanu Gupta ji have contributed a lot in laying its foundation,” Singh said. The defence minister also said while Gupta was the CM of a big state like Uttar Pradesh, his vision and agenda was never regional, always nationalistic.

“Chandra Bhanu ji was not in power for a very long (time). But in the short time he was in power, he gave priority to public welfare works. He was always known for his integrity.”

Singh said while Gupta did not agree with the ‘Kamaraj Plan’ he resigned from the CM post due to it. “You can imagine how an elected leader had to step down from the post due to the dislike of some people,” Singh said. In 1963 K Kamaraj (former Chief Minister of Madras) suggested to Nehru that senior Congress leaders should leave ministerial posts to take up organisational work.

This suggestion came to be known as the ‘Kamaraj Plan’, which was designed primarily to dispel the notion that Congressmen were attached to power, creating in its place a dedicated attachment to the objectives and policies of the organisation. The plan was approved by the Congress Working Committee and was implemented within two months. Six chief ministers and six Union ministers resigned under the plan. Kamaraj was later elected president of the Indian National Congress on October 9, 1963.

With sex ratio at 921, 3100 girls missing annually in J&K

With sex ratio at 921, 3100 girls missing annually in J&K

Srinagar, Jul 13: A persistently low sex ratio that signals a chronic gender imbalance tarnishes the achievements of J&K’s healthcare system.

Despite reducing the Infant Mortality to an enviable low, girls in J&K are dying, even before they are born.

The sex ratio here remains below 945, the target that could give girls a chance to have a life, nearly similar to that of boys.

According to the ‘Vital Statistics of India Based on Civil Registration System 2021’ from the Office of the Registrar General of India, J&K’s sex ratio at birth has fluctuated unevenly over recent years.

It was 957 in 2017, 953 in 2018, 965 in 2019, and 984 in 2020. Sadly, and concerningly, it fell back to 957 in 2021.

These figures show some improvement.

However, the Sample Registration System (SRS) data for 2018-2020 states that the sex ratio at birth for J&K is 921 females per 1000 males, a minuscule improvement from 918 in 2017-2019, but grossly far behind the natural benchmark of 952.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 target a sex ratio of 945. J&K is among the 17 states and union territories of India with a sex ratio below this benchmark. This sordid tale is a grim indicator of systemic failures.

J&K’s celebrated drop in Infant Mortality Rates (IMR) poses a pressing question: where are all these missing girls, and how many are lost each year, even before birth?

There are no straight answers to this question, but rather a mystery that could only be answered by a thorough probe by the health department of J&K.

Is it the lax enforcement of laws, inadequate public awareness, and failure to address cultural biases that are responsible for the missing girls?

Nevertheless, the lopsided sex ratio casts a long shadow over the glam and glitter of healthcare development, when females are robbed of their chance to live.

For every 1000 male births, as per the natural ratios, there should be 952 girls born.

However, with just 921 females being delivered, approximately 31 fewer females are born per 1000 male births.

The Report of the Technical Group on Population Projections for India and States, 2011-2036, estimates that there are approximately 2 lakh births in J&K annually.

Assuming nearly half are male (1 lakh male births), there is a shortfall of 3100 female births annually: female foetuses that J&K may be losing due to sex-selective practices. Were these sex-selection procedures missed or ignored by the healthcare system?

We don’t know the answers.

The healthcare system has commendable achievements like a 13.3-point drop in IMR, as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s Annual Report, 2024-25, J&K has not progressed at the same pace to address the gender crisis.

The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act bans sex determination and selective abortions. A 2023 directive from the Secretary of Health and Medical Education, Bhupinder Kumar, instructed the Directorates of Health Services to assess all registered ultrasound clinics for compliance, suggesting that monitoring may be inadequate.

The crisis is not limited to the prenatal phase only.

Inequitable care results in higher mortality rates for girls in the initial years of birth.

The NFHS-5 data shows under-five mortality at 54 per 1000 live births for girls compared to 46 for boys.
