Gold declines Rs 600 to Rs 99,020 per 10 g; silver plunges Rs 1,000

New Delhi, Aug 14: Gold prices climbed Rs 400 to Rs 1,01,420 per 10 grams in the national capital on Thursday on fresh buying by stockists in line with firm global trends, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The yellow metal of 99.9 per cent purity had settled at Rs 1,01,020 per 10 grams in the previous session.

Gold of 99.5 per cent purity increased by Rs 400 to Rs 1,01,000 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Thursday. It had closed at Rs 1,00,600 per 10 grams on Wednesday.

In the national capital, silver prices rose by Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,13,500 per kg (inclusive of all taxes) on Thursday.

“Gold and silver prices rose after traders increased their bets on the US Federal Reserve for resuming interest rate cuts in the September meeting. While indications of a slowing labour market provided room for additional easing, the most recent US Consumer Price Index report allayed worries over tariff-driven inflation,” Renisha Chainani, Head of Research at Augmont said.

On the global front, spot gold went up marginally to trade at USD 3,356.96 per ounce in New York.

“Gold extends gains to trade ahead of US Producer Price Index and jobless claims data.

“However, optimism over trade, as Washington and Beijing extended their tariff truce by 90 days, and upcoming talks between US, European, Ukrainian, and Russian leaders, could temper further upside,” Kaynat Chainwala, AVP of Commodity Research at Kotak Securities, said.

According to Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, dollar weakness has lent support to gold prices, while ongoing tariffs on various countries have also underpinned its strength. Overall, gold remains positive as long as USD 3,280 per ounce level is held.

However, spot silver slipped 0.41 per cent to USD 38.35 per ounce.

Before 2014, India had only 74 airports, now over 150: PM Modi in Haryana

Srinagar, Aug 14: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed heartfelt thoughts and prayers for those who have been affected by the cloudburst and flooding in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The PM Modi said that situation is being monitored closely while rescue and relief operations in the area are underway.

He also assured that every possible assistance will be provided to the victims of the disaster.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the cloudburst and flooding in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir. The situation is being monitored closely. Rescue and relief operations are underway.  Every possible assistance will be provided to those in need,” PM Narendra Modi said on X.

It is worthwhile to mention that large-scale rescue and relief operations have been launched after a massive cloudburst struck a remote village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday, killing at least 17 people and leading to widespread damage, officials said.

The disaster hit Chositi, the last motorable village en route to Machail Mata temple, between 12 noon and 1 pm, when a large number of people had gathered for the Machail Mata yatra.

Massive cloudburst in J&K's Kishtwar; 20 killed, 98 rescued so far

Jammu, Aug 14: A massive cloudburst struck a remote mountain village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday, killing at least 20 people and trapping many more, officials said.

The dead toll could go up, they said, adding that 98 people have been rescued so far. Of these, the condition of 28 is said to be serious.

Two CISF personnel have been killed in the calamity, they said.

A large-scale rescue operation is underway by NDRF, SDRF, police, Army and local volunteers, the officials said.

The disaster struck Chositi, the last motorable village en route to Machail Mata temple, between 12 noon and 1 pm, when a large number of people had gathered for the Machail Mata yatra, which commenced on July 25 and was scheduled to end on September 5. The 8.5 kilometre trek to the 9,500-feet-high shrine begins from Chositi.

Chositi is about 90 kilometres from Kishtwar town. A ‘langar’ (community kitchen) set up for the devotees here bore the brunt of the cloudburst, which led to flash floods and washed away several structures including shops and a security outpost.

Immediately after the calamity struck, Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma, mobilised rescue teams and headed towards the spot to personally supervise the operations along with the Senior Superintendent of Police.

“A massive cloudburst in Chositi area, which could result in substantial casualty. Administration has immediately swung into action, rescue team has left for the site,” Union Minister Jitendra Singh said in an X post. The minister said he also spoke to Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner on the matter.

The annual yatra to the Machail Mata shrine was suspended following the tragedy as the authorities mobilised all resources for rescue operations at Chositi, officials said.

Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been rushed from Udhampur to Kishtwar.

“Massive rescue operations have been started in the area,” said the deputy commissioner, who was on way to the spot.

Officials added that the flash floods hit several houses clustered together in the foothills.

Lt Gov Manoj Sinha condoled the loss of lives in the incident.

“Anguished by cloudburst in Chositi Kishtwar. Condolences to bereaved families and prayers for quick recovery of the injured. Directed Civil, Police, Army, NDRF and SDRF officials to strengthen the rescue and relief operations and ensure all possible assistance is provided to the affected,” he said on X.

Leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Sharma said he had received information from his workers that a massive cloudburst has occurred. “At the moment, I don’t think anyone has exact figures but I believe there could be significant damage in the area,” he said, adding that there were a lot of people gathered for the yatra.

Former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also expressed grief over the incident.

“Deeply saddened by the cloudburst in Chositi, Kishtwar. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. Urge the govt to immediately carry out rescue & relief operations and ensure all possible assistance and treatment for those affected,” he said in a post on X.

BJP leader Jehanzaib Sirwal, while extending his deepest condolences to the affected people, said the heart-breaking incident underscores a broader concern that cannot be ignored –the unchecked proliferation of power projects in Kishtwar.

“While development is essential, the ongoing projects, pursued without rigorous mechanisms or proper environmental assessments, pose a grave threat to our fragile ecosystem,” Sirwal said, urging the Centre to institute immediate and thorough checks on these initiatives.

“If robust measures are not implemented even now, the consequences for Kishtwar and its people could be even more catastrophic in the years ahead,” he said.

Statehood decision should not wait eight months, PM must announce tomorrow: Minister Satish

Srinagar, Aug 14: Minister Satish on Thursday said that there is no need to wait for eight weeks to decide on the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, a matter currently before the Supreme Court.

He was responding to today’s Supreme Court hearing, in which the court sought the Centre’s response within eight weeks on pleas seeking the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to media persons in Srinagar, Satish said, “The issue of statehood is out of our domain, but why wait for eight weeks? Whatever they are planning to give after eight weeks should be announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself tomorrow on the occasion of Independence Day.”

He added that if the Supreme Court has made such observations, it should consider every aspect, review the matter, and “return the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

Earlier, Supreme Court on Thursday heard an application seeking directions for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, with Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan appearing for the applicants.

Gopal Sankaranarayanan told the court that it has been 21 months since the judgment directing the Election Commission of India to hold J&K assembly elections by September 30 and for statehood to be restored “as soon as possible,” yet no substantial movement has been made despite earlier assurances.

Counsel appearing for the former Chief Secretary of J&K supported the plea. Gopal Sankaranarayanan further urged the court to list all related matters the same day, stating that if any clarification is required, a bench should be constituted.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed the plea, arguing that the miscellaneous application was “not maintainable,” pointing out that costs have been imposed in similar matters earlier, and stressing that “peculiar conditions emerge in this part of the country” when elections are held. He requested the matter be taken up after eight weeks.

The Chief Justice of India B R Gavai, heading the bench, observed, “Ground situations must be considered, you cannot ignore incidents like Pahalgam.” The Solicitor General maintained that steps toward restoring statehood are underway but said the situation on the ground remains complex. (KNC)
