In Gaza, summer heat amplifies daily struggle to survive

Israeli strikes across Gaza kill at least 59 as Israel prepares to ramp up its offensive

Khan Younis, July 03: For Rida Abu Hadayed, summer adds a new layer of misery to a daily struggle to survive in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip.

With temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, daybreak begins with the cries of Hadayed’s seven children sweltering inside the displaced family’s cramped nylon tent. Outside, the humidity is unbearable.

The only way the 32-year-old mother can offer her children relief is by fanning them with a tray or bits of paper — whatever she can find. If she has water, she pours it over them, but that is an increasingly scarce resource.

“There is no electricity. There is nothing,” she said, her face beaded with sweat. “They cannot sleep. They keep crying all day until the sun sets.”

The heat in Gaza has intensified hardships for its 2 million residents. Reduced water availability, crippled sanitation networks, and shrinking living spaces threaten to cause illnesses to cascade through communities, aid groups have long warned.

The scorching summer coincides with a lack of clean water for the majority of Gaza’s population, most of whom are displaced in tented communities. Many Palestinians in the enclave must walk long distances to fetch water and ration each drop, limiting their ability to wash and keep cool.

“We are only at the beginning of summer,“ Hadayed’s husband, Yousef, said. “And our situation is dire.”

Israel had blocked food, fuel, medicine and all other supplies from entering Gaza for nearly three months. It began allowing limited aid in May, but fuel needed to pump water from wells or operate desalination plants is still not getting into the territory.

With fuel supplies short, only 40 per cent of drinking water production facilities are functioning in the Gaza Strip, according to a recent report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. All face imminent collapse. Up to 93 per cent of households face water shortages, the June report said.

The Hadayeds were displaced after evacuation orders forced them to leave eastern Khan Younis.

“Our lives in the tent are miserable. We spend our days pouring water over their heads and their skin,” Yousef Hadayed said. “Water itself is scarce. It is very difficult to get that water.”

UNICEF’s spokesperson recently said that if fuel supplies are not allowed to enter the enclave, children will die of thirst.

“Me and my children spend our days sweating,” said Reham Abu Hadayed, a 30-year-old relative of Rida Abu Hadayed who was also displaced from eastern Khan Younis. She worries about the health of her four children.

“I don’t have enough money to buy them medicine,” she said.

For Mohammed al-Awini, 23, the heat is not the worst part. It’s the flies and mosquitoes that bombard his tent, especially at night.

Without adequate sewage networks, garbage piles up on streets, attracting insects and illness. The stench of decomposing trash wafts in the air.

“We are awake all night, dying from mosquito bites,” he said. “We are the most tired people in the world.”

Div Com Kashmir flags off first batch of Amarnath pilgrims from Baltal

Baltal, July 03: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, on Wednesday flagged off the first batch of pilgrims from the Baltal base camp to the holy Amarnath cave, marking the official commencement of this year’s Yatra.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary, Science and Technology, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary—who is also the Nodal Officer for the Baltal axis—Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Jatin Kishore, SSP Ganderbal Khalil Poswal, and other senior officials.

Speaking at the event, the Divisional Commissioner emphasized that the Amarnath Yatra is not merely a religious journey but a “Yatra of the people,” reflecting its broader social and cultural significance. He highlighted the comprehensive arrangements put in place by the Ganderbal administration to ensure the safety and comfort of the pilgrims, including enhanced medical facilities, sanitation services, and security measures.

The first batch of pilgrims had been warmly welcomed by the administration on their arrival, and the Div Com extended his best wishes for a safe and spiritually fulfilling journey.

Chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Bam Bam Bhole” echoed through the base camp as the devotees began their trek. Pilgrims expressed satisfaction and enthusiasm over the arrangements.

The 38-day pilgrimage, which began today, will conclude on August 9. Pilgrims can choose between two routes: the traditional 48-kilometre Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter, steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route in Ganderbal district. The first group of pilgrims had departed from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on July 2.

India slams China’s “preposterous” renaming places in Arunachal Pradesh

New Delhi, July 03: The government has expressed serious concern over the abduction of three Indian nationals from a cement factory in Mali following a string of coordinated terror attacks across the West African nation.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the incident occurred on July 1 at the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, western Mali, where armed assailants stormed the premises and forcibly took three Indian employees’ hostage. The abduction is believed to be part of a wider wave of terrorist attacks on military and government installations in western and central Mali on the same day.

India’s Embassy in Bamako is working closely with Malian authorities, local law enforcement, and the management of the Diamond Cement Factory to ensure the safe release of the hostages. The embassy is also in regular touch with the families of the abducted Indians.

Calling the abduction a “deplorable act of violence,” the MEA has urged the Government of Mali to take immediate and comprehensive steps to secure the safe and swift release of the Indian nationals. Senior Indian officials are monitoring the situation and remain engaged with counterparts in Mali.

“The safety, security, and welfare of Indian nationals abroad remains a matter of utmost priority,” the MEA stated, while advising all Indian citizens in Mali to exercise extreme caution, stay alert, and maintain close contact with the Indian Embassy in Bamako.

The ministry assured that it will continue to provide all necessary support to ensure the safe return of the abducted individuals.

India, US to ink 10-year defence framework: Pentagon

‘India, US trade talks from Apr 23; pact’s terms of reference includes about 19 chapters’

New Delhi, July 03: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his American counterpart Pete Hegseth have agreed to firm up a 10-year framework to further expand defence and strategic ties between India and the US.

The decision on the defence framework was mentioned in a Pentagon statement that was released on Wednesday, a day after Singh and US Defence Secretary Hegseth held a phone conversation.

“Secretary Hegseth and Minister Singh agreed to sign the next 10-year US-India Defence Framework when they next meet this year,” it said.

It said the two sides discussed pending major US defence sales to India and the imperative of close defence industrial cooperation between the two countries.

“Secretary Hegseth emphasised the priority the United States places on India as its key defence partner in South Asia,” the Pentagon said.

It said the two leaders reviewed the “considerable progress” both countries have made toward achieving the defence goals set out in the February 2025 joint statement by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The two discussed pending major US defence sales to India and the imperative of close defence industrial cooperation between the two countries,” the Pentagon readout said without providing further details.

In the phone conversation on Tuesday, Singh urged Hegseth to expedite the delivery of GE F404 engines to power the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, people familiar with the matter said.

Singh also pitched for early finalisation of a proposed deal between Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and US defence major GE Aerospace for joint production of F414 jet engines in India, they said.

The delay in the supply of F404 engines by GE Aerospace has resulted in HAL missing the deadline to supply Tejas Mark 1A aircraft to the Indian Air Force.

An Indian readout on Tuesday said Singh and Hegseth discussed a wide canvas of issues ranging from long-term cooperation in the defence sector, including training and military exchanges, to expanding industry collaborations.

“They agreed to further build upon the momentum of this critical and mutually beneficial partnership across all its pillars such as interoperability, integration of defence industrial supply chains, logistics sharing, increased joint military exercises and cooperation with other like-minded partners,” it said.

PM Modi conferred Ghana’s highest civilian honour; India, Ghana elevate ties to comprehensive partnership

New Delhi, July 03: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Ghana’s highest civilian honour — Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — during his state visit to the West African nation. The award, presented by President John Dramani Mahama, recognises PM Modi’s global leadership and statesmanship.

This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over three decades. Accepting the honour on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians, Modi dedicated it to India’s youth, its cultural diversity, and the enduring friendship between India and Ghana.

During his visit, PM Modi held bilateral talks with President Mahama at the Jubilee House, where both sides agreed to elevate their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership.

The two leaders engaged in restricted and delegation-level discussions, covering a broad spectrum of issues including trade, agriculture, digital technology, defence cooperation, and development partnerships.

They reaffirmed long-standing ties and pledged to double bilateral trade, which currently stands at over USD 3 billion. Indian companies have invested approximately USD 2 billion across nearly 900 projects in Ghana. India also expressed willingness to share expertise in fintech, particularly the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), healthcare via Jan Aushadhi Kendras, and vaccine production.

In support of Ghana’s “Feed Ghana” agricultural programme, India pledged development assistance and offered to establish a Skill Development Centre to benefit Ghana’s youth. Scholarships under the ITEC and ICCR programmes will be doubled.

The leaders also discussed regional and international developments, including the situation in West Asia, UN reforms, and counter-terrorism efforts. PM Modi thanked President Mahama for his solidarity following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and reiterated the shared commitment to combat terrorism and uphold global peace.

Four Memorandums of Understanding were signed in the areas of culture, standards, Ayurveda and traditional medicine, and foreign ministry-level engagement through a Joint Commission Mechanism.

The visit also highlights India’s broader engagement with the Global South. PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to voicing the concerns of developing nations and welcomed Ghana’s role in the Voice of Global South initiatives. He also highlighted the African Union’s permanent membership in the G20, achieved during India’s G20 presidency.

President Mahama hosted a state banquet in honour of PM Modi, who in turn invited the Ghanaian leader to visit India at a mutually convenient time.

PM Modi is scheduled to meet members of the Indian community in Ghana before continuing on his five-nation tour of the Global South.

Amarnath Yatra begins as pilgrims set out from Baltal, Nunwan base camps

Srinagar, July 03: The annual Amarnath Yatra began on Thursday with the first batches of pilgrims setting off from the twin base camps in Baltal and Nunwan towards the 3880-metre-high cave shrine in the south Kashmir Himalayas, which houses a naturally formed ice-lingam, officials said.

The yatra started early morning from the twin tracks — the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route and the 14-km Baltal route.

The batches of pilgrims, including men, women and sadhus, left from the Nunwan base camp in Pahalgam, in south Kashmir’s Anantnag, and Baltal base camp in Sonamarg area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal at the first light of the day, the officials said.

The chants of ‘bum bum bole’ filled the air as the batches were flagged off by senior officials from the respective base camps, they added.

On Wednesday, the first batch of 5,892 yatris was flagged off from the yatra base camp in Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

The pilgrims reached the Kashmir Valley in the afternoon and received a rousing welcome from the administration and locals.

They will pay obeisance at the cave shrine, which houses the naturally occurring ice-lingam formation.

Stringent security arrangements have been put in place for the smooth conduct of the yatra.

Thousands of security personnel from the police, Central Reserve Police Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and other paramilitary forces have been deployed to ensure security. Aerial surveillance will also be carried out.

The 38-day pilgrimage will conclude on August 9.

Sabalenka holds firm to reach 3rd round

Sabalenka holds firm to reach 3rd round

London, Jul 2: World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka produced another composed and powerful display on Centre Court, defeating Marie Bouzkova 7-6(4), 6-4 on Wednesday to book her place in the third round of Wimbledon 2025.

Sabalenka, known for her blistering shot-making and aggression, was tested early by the crafty and defensive Bouzkova. But the Belarusian brought her trademark intensity and poise at key moments to stretch her unbeaten record in Grand Slam second rounds to 18 straight.

The first set was tightly contested, with Bouzkova deploying a mix of spins, angles, and defensive prowess to keep Sabalenka guessing. But in the tiebreak, Sabalenka stepped up with two explosive forehands before punishing a soft 67 mph second serve from Bouzkova to close the set with a rocket forehand return.

The second set was more straightforward. Sabalenka earned the decisive break in the sixth game and never looked back, finishing the match with a forehand into the open court—one of her 40 winners on the day. She kept her unforced errors in check (18), served five aces, and won a commanding 31 of 35 points on her first serve.

With several top seeds—including Coco Gauff (No. 2), Jessica Pegula (No. 3), and Zheng Qinwen (No. 5)—exiting early, Sabalenka’s path to the title has opened up. Her next opponent will be either 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova or British star Emma Raducanu, both Grand Slam winners and formidable threats.

Having reached the semifinals in her last two Wimbledon appearances, Sabalenka is clearly eyeing more this year. In a draw suddenly missing many of her biggest rivals, the top seed is making her intentions clear: she’s here to win it all.

Sadhotra seeks probe into issue

NC committed to development of far flung areas: Sadhotra

Jammu, Jul 2: National Conference Additional General Secretary and former Minister Ajay Kumar Sadhotra today called for a high-level probe into non-utilisation of bunker construction funds in border areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement, he expressed  serious concern over the alarming delay. The NC leader  said the probe will  fix accountability and ensure justice to the border population living under the constant threat of shelling from across the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB).

Sadhotra lambasted the lackadaisical and indifferent approach of the so-called double engine government over the past decade. He said it is deeply unfortunate that despite repeated shelling incidents leading to the loss of precious civilian lives, the BJP government at the Centre and its proxy administration here failed to ensure timely construction of individual and community bunkers an essential safety measure for the vulnerable border population.

“The very purpose of allocating funds for bunker construction was to provide immediate protective shelters to our border residents, especially in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch districts, who frequently come under direct threat of cross-border shelling,” Sadhotra said, ad ding that such callousness was not just administrative failure but also a human tragedy that could have been averted.

Government in deep slumber: PDP

Srinagar, Jul 2: PDP leader Arif Laigaroo today alleged that National Conference (NC) government is in deep slumber.

In a statement, he criticised the government and National Conference MLA Shamima Firdous for their total failure in addressing the severe water crisis affecting Habba Kadal, including Nawabazar, Shaoragari Mohalla, Kaka Sob, Jamalata, and Chattabal.

“It is shameful that during the sacred days of Muharram, people are struggling for even a single drop of water. The administration is in deep slumber, and the local MLA Shamima Firdous is missing from the ground. She has completely failed the people who voted for her,” Laigaroo said.
