Trump calls for Gaza ceasefire deal; some Palestinians skeptical

0
Israeli strikes across Gaza kill at least 59 as Israel prepares to ramp up its offensive

Tel Aviv, June 30: US President Donald Trump on Sunday urged progress in ceasefire talks in the 20-month war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, though some weary Palestinians were skeptical about the chances.

Israel has issued a new mass evacuation order for parts of northern Gaza.

Ron Dermer, a top advisor to Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was set to travel to Washington this week for talks on a ceasefire, an Israeli official said, and plans were being made for Netanyahu to travel there in the coming weeks, a sign there may be movement on a deal.

Netanyahu was meeting with his security Cabinet on Sunday evening, the official said on condition of anonymity, to discuss plans that hadn’t been finalised.

“MAKE THE DEAL IN GAZA. GET THE HOSTAGES BACK!!!” Trump wrote on social media early Sunday.

Trump raised expectations Friday by saying there could be an agreement within next week.

Some Palestinians doubtful of latest efforts

An eight-week ceasefire was reached as Trump took office earlier this year, but Israel resumed the war in March after trying to get Hamas to accept new terms on next steps.

“Since the beginning of the war, they have been promising us something like this: Release the hostages and we will stop the war,” said one Palestinian, Abdel Hadi Al-Hour.

“They did not stop the war.”

Meanwhile, Israeli attacks continued. An airstrike on Sunday evening hit a house sheltering displaced people in the Jabaliya al-Nazla area, killing at least 15, according to Fares Awad, head of the Gaza’s Health Ministry’s ambulance and emergency services in the territory’s north.

He said women and children made up over half the dead.

During a visit to Israel’s internal security service, Shin Bet, Netanyahu said that the Israel-Iran war and ceasefire have opened many opportunities: “First of all, to rescue the hostages. Of course, we will also have to solve the Gaza issue, to defeat Hamas, but I estimate that we will achieve both tasks.”

Major sticking point for any deal

But talks between Israel and Hamas have repeatedly faltered over a major sticking point — whether the war should end as part of any ceasefire agreement.

Hamas official Mahmoud Merdawi accused Netanyahu of stalling progress on a deal, saying on social media that the Israeli leader insists on a temporary agreement that would free just 10 of the hostages. About 50 hostages remain, with less than half believed to be alive.

Netanyahu spokesperson Omer Dostri said that “Hamas was the only obstacle to ending the war”, without addressing Merdawi’s claim.

Hamas says it is willing to free all the hostages in exchange for a full withdrawal of Israeli troops and an end to the war in Gaza. Israel rejects that offer, saying it will agree to end the war if Hamas surrenders, disarms and goes into exile, something that the group refuses.

The war in Gaza began with the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which militants killed 1,200 people and took roughly 250 hostage.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said that another 88 people had been killed by Israeli fire over the past 24 hours, raising the war’s toll among Palestinians to 56,500. The ministry, which operates under the Hamas government, doesn’t distinguish between militants and civilians in its count, but says more than half of the dead were women and children.

The war has displaced most of Gaza’s population, often multiple times, obliterated much of the urban landscape and left people overwhelmingly reliant on outside aid, which Israel has limited since the end of the latest ceasefire.

Fewer than half of Gaza’s hospitals are even partly functional, and more than 4,000 children need medical evacuation abroad, a new UN humanitarian assessment says.

“We are exhausted, we are tired. We hope to God that the war will end,” Mahmoud Wadi, a Palestinian, said.

New Gaza evacuations ordered

Israel’s military ordered a mass evacuation of Palestinians in large swaths of northern Gaza, home to hundreds of thousands who had returned during the ceasefire earlier this year.

The order includes multiple neighbourhoods in eastern and northern Gaza City, as well as the Jabaliya refugee camp. Palestinians in Gaza City began loading children, bedding and other essentials onto donkey carts, uprooted once more.

Trump slams Netanyahu trial

Trump also doubled down on his criticism of the legal proceedings against Netanyahu, who is on trial for alleged corruption, calling it a “POLITICAL WITCH HUNT”.

In the post Saturday evening, Trump said the trial interfered with ceasefire talks, saying Netanyahu “is right now in the process of negotiating a Deal with Hamas, which will include getting the Hostages back”.

Last week, Trump called for the trial to be cancelled. It was a dramatic interference in the domestic affairs of a sovereign state. It unnerved many in Israel, despite Trump’s popularity there.

The trial has repeatedly been postponed at Netanyahu’s request, citing security and diplomatic developments.

On Sunday, the court agreed to call off two more days of testimony by him scheduled this week.

Trump says he’s not planning to extend pause on global tariffs beyond July 9

0
Trump and Netanyahu will meet again Monday on Gaza, tariffs and more

Washington, June 29: President Donald Trump says he is not planning to extend a 90-day pause on tariffs on most nations beyond July 9, when the negotiating period he set would expire, and his administration will notify countries that the trade penalties will take effect unless there are deals with the United States.

Letters will start going out “pretty soon” before the approaching deadline, he said.

“We’ll look at how a country treats us — are they good, are they not so good — some countries we don’t care, we’ll just send a high number out,” Trump told Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures” during a wide-ranging interview taped Friday and broadcast Sunday.

Those letters, he said, would say, “Congratulations, we’re allowing you to shop in the United States of America, you’re going to pay a 25% tariff, or a 35% or a 50% or 10%.”

Trump had played down the deadline at a White House news conference Friday by noting how difficult it would be to work out separate deals with each nation. The administration had set a goal of reaching 90 trade deals in 90 days.

Negotiations continue, but “there’s 200 countries, you can’t talk to all of them,” he said in the interview.

Trump also discussed a potential TikTok deal, relations with China, the strikes on Iran and his immigration crackdown.

Here are the key takeaways:

Few details on possible TikTok dealA group of wealthy investors will make an offer to buy TikTok, Trump said, hinting at a deal that could safeguard the future of the popular social media platform, which is owned by China’s ByteDance.

“We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way. I think I’ll need, probably, China approval, and I think President Xi (Jinping) will probably do it,” Trump said.

Trump did not offer any details about the investors, calling them “a group of very wealthy people.”

“I’ll tell you in about two weeks,” he said when asked for specifics.

It’s a time frame Trump often cites, most recently about a decision on whether the US military would get directly involved in the war between Israel and Iran. The US struck Iranian nuclear sites just days later.

Earlier this month, Trump signed an executive order to keep TikTok running in the US for 90 more days to give his administration more time to broker a deal to bring the social media platform under American ownership.

It is the third time Trump extended the deadline. The first one was through an executive order on Jan. 20, his first day in office, after the platform went dark briefly when a national ban — approved by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court — took effect.

Trump insists US obliterated’ Iran’s nuclear facilities

US strikes on Iran “obliterated” its nuclear facilities, Trump insisted, and he said whoever leaked a preliminary intelligence assessment suggesting Tehran’s nuclear program had been set back only a few months should be prosecuted.

Trump said Iran was “weeks away” from achieving a nuclear weapon before he ordered the strikes.

“It was obliterated like nobody’s ever seen before,” Trump said. “And that meant the end to their nuclear ambitions, at least for a period of time.”

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Sunday on X that Trump “exaggerated to cover up and conceal the truth.” Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that his country’s nuclear program is peaceful and that uranium “enrichment is our right, and an inalienable right and we want to implement this right” under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. “I think that enrichment will not — never stop.”

Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said on CBS that “it is clear that there has been severe damage, but it’s not total damage.”

Grossi also said the UN nuclear watchdog has faced pressure to report that Iran had a nuclear weapon or was close to one, but “we simply didn’t because this was not what we were seeing.”

Of the leak of the intelligence assessment, Trump said anyone found to be responsible should be prosecuted. Journalists who received it should be asked who their source was, he said: “You have to do that and I suspect we’ll be doing things like that.”

His press secretary said Thursday that the administration is investigating the matter.

A temporary pass’ for immigration raids on farms and hotels?

As he played up his immigration crackdown, Trump offered a more nuanced view when it comes to farm and hotel workers.

“I’m the strongest immigration guy that there’s ever been, but I’m also the strongest farmer guy that there’s ever been,” the Republican president said.

He noted that he wants to deport criminals, but it’s a problem when farmers lose their laborers and it destroys their businesses.

Trump said his administration is working on “some kind of a temporary pass” that could give farmers and hotel owners control over immigration raids at their facilities.

Earlier this month, Trump had called for a pause on immigration raids disrupting the farming, hotel and restaurant industries, but a top Homeland Security official followed up with a seemingly contradictory statement. Tricia McLaughlin said there would be “no safe spaces for industries who harbour violent criminals or purposely try to undermine” immigration enforcement efforts.

Status of China trade talks

Trump praised a recent trade deal with Beijing over rare earth exports from China and said establishing a fairer relationship will require significant tariffs.

“I think getting along well with China is a very good thing,” Trump said. “China’s going to be paying a lot of tariffs, but we have a big (trade) deficit, they understand that.”

Trump said he would be open to removing sanctions on Iranian oil shipments to China if Iran can show “they can be peaceful and if they can show us they’re not going to do any more harm.”

But the president also indicated the US isn’t afraid to retaliate against Beijing. When Fox News Channel host Maria Bartiromo noted that China has tried to hack US systems and steal intellectual property, Trump replied, “You don’t think we do that to them?”

Jammu, June 29: Scripting a new success story and bringing cheer to cherry growers from the Valley, Jammu Railway Division has transported 334 tonnes of luscious fruit through 13 Parvel Vans (VPs) and routine parcel booking in the past one month to Mumbai from Katra and Jammu.

Overwhelmed cherry growers have acknowledged this feat with a sense of gratitude in writing to the officials of Indian Railways and Jammu Division in particular.

“This year, during the cherry season, about 13 parcel vans of cherries were loaded from Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra for Bandra Terminus in 26 days only and about 334 tonnes of cherries were loaded in the SLR (Seating cum Luggage Rack) of trains and sent to Mumbai through regular parcel booking,” stated Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) of Jammu (Railway) Division.

Notably, the “game changer” initiative, led by Singhal, commenced on May 31, 2025 under the guidance of Divisional Railway Manager of Jammu Division, Vivek Kumar.

Creating a sort of history after the formation of Jammu Railway Division, the first cherry cargo train (parcel van) was dispatched from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station for Bandra Terminus. 24 tonnes of cherry fruit were transported from Katra through train number 12472 in the very first dispatch.

“This unique initiative was taken at the behest of the fruit growers associations and the Horticulture Department of Jammu and Kashmir by loading cherries in the first parcel van from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Bandra Terminus. It was a successful effort whereby the goods of the traders were delivered to their destination station in a short time,” Singhal pointed out.

He said that moving forward in this direction, Parcel Vans were made available in train numbers 12472 and 19028 on the demand of the cherry growers associations of Kashmir Valley to transport cherries to Bandra Terminus.

Acknowledging the success of this initiative, the traders and cherry growers associations have expressed their gratitude to the railways and its officials.

in a letter of thanks addressed to Singhal, Bashir Ahmad Bashir, chairman Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers cum Dealers Union and president The New Kashmir Fruit Association said, “Cherry is indeed an extremely delicious fruit and it is important for it to reach its destination station within shortest possible time, being a perishable commodity.”

JK rowing, sculling bodies call for Govt support to harness water sports potential

JK rowing, sculling bodies call for Govt support to harness water sports potential

Srinagar, Jun 29: In an appeal for recognition and structured investment, the J&K Rowing and Sculling Association, during its 7th Annual General Body Meeting held in Srinagar, urged the government to support the region’s growing water sports talent and infrastructure.

As per a statement, the 7th Annual General Body Meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir Association of Rowing and Sculling (JKRS) was held at Radisson Collection here in Srinagar.

The gathering brought together athletes, dignitaries, and stakeholders in an atmosphere filled with pride, perseverance, and purpose. More than a reflection on achievements, the event served as a collective call to strengthen the future of water sports in the region, a sport that continues to bring honour and recognition to Jammu and Kashmir on the national stage.

Guest of Honour B. S. Ahluwalia, addressing the felicitation ceremony for young medal-winning water sports athletes, praised the resilience and vision of the water sports associations. “Kashmir is a natural paradise for water sports. With its majestic rivers and lakes, it holds the infrastructure the rest of India dreams of,” he said. “Water sports are not only a competitive asset but also a vital part of tourism. With icons like Bilquis Mir, this region can become a global hub. But this potential needs backing. The government must come forward now, not later.”

Presiding over the meeting, Dr Burhan Bazzaz, President of the J&K Rowing and Sculling Association, delivered a warm welcome address and congratulated Bilquis Mir on her trailblazing appointment as the first Indian jury member on the Olympic panel. Dr Burhan stated, “This is not just an achievement for Jammu and Kashmir; it is a victory for the entire nation. But if we don’t recognise and support our heroes now, we risk writing a story of missed opportunities rather than glory.” He emphasised that the time has come to join hands with the government to build on this momentum. “Together with the support of the government, we must move forward with a shared vision and elevate the name of Jammu and Kashmir on the international stage,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Bilquis Mir, an international medallist and leading figure in Indian water sports, said, “Despite limited support, we’ve continued to bring medals home and participate across the country. But to truly grow, we need structured investment, boats, training, events, and programmes. We are not seeking favour, but a fair chance to build a legacy that our youth deserve.”

She acknowledged the government’s continued recognition and encouragement of various sports and added, “We now bring to the forefront a sport that holds international acclaim: rowing and sculling and canoeing and kayaking. She further said, “This is the right time to support this exciting sport, which fits perfectly with the natural beauty of Jammu and Kashmir. Our region, known as the Crown of India, already has the lakes and rivers needed for water sports. We just need some financial help to begin a new journey in Indian sports where the waters of Kashmir can lead our young athletes to success across the country and the world.

Mr Shafqat Watali, President of the J&K Canoeing and Kayaking Association (JKCKA), shared the heartfelt journey behind the medals. “Our water sports associations have moved forward with passion, unity, and a deep commitment to our athletes. Now, with a little support, we can go even further. Boats, training, and travel for national and international competitions require resources, and we believe that with the government’s guidance and encouragement, our champions can reach even greater heights.” On the occasion, Vice President (JKCKA) Imran Ahmad said, “Jammu and Kashmir is home to extraordinary talent, ideal natural conditions, and unmatched determination. With timely support and structured funding, we are confident that many golden moments await us.”

Latief Ahmad, CEO of Colour Curve, emphasised the need for regular events and collaborations with business and government bodies. “Let us build partnerships that can take our athletes from lakes to laurels.” Dr Shahid Ali Khan, cultural officer at Kashmir University, spoke on the deep connection between water sports and tourism. “Adventure tourism is the future. We have the waters, the weather, and the will. What we need is the government’s wind in our sails. Jammu and Kashmir has the potential to host international water sports events that can spotlight us on the world map.”

A resolution was unanimously adopted to launch district-level competitions, grassroots training initiatives, and youth outreach programmes across schools and colleges. The association pledged to continue its mission but also demanded that the government finally share the responsibility.

Receiving their medals, young athletes spoke with pride but also disappointment. “We’ve been approached by other states offering better training and support. Yet our own Jammu and Kashmir remains silent. Why are we celebrated elsewhere but ignored at home?” they asked. Their words carried no bitterness, only an aching hope that their home would one day stand behind them the way they have represented it with heart and honour.

They made a heartfelt appeal to Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha and Jenab Omar Abdullah, requesting their kind attention and continued support to help water sports flourish in Jammu and Kashmir. They emphasised that water sports are not just a competitive pursuit but a powerful tool for youth development, employment, and tourism growth.

“Our young athletes have brought pride to the region—what they need now is recognition, proper infrastructure, and a strong support system,” they said. “We are confident that with the government’s handholding and vision, this sport can become one of Jammu and Kashmir’s greatest success stories. Together, we can shape a future where our waters nurture champions and create new opportunities for the youth.”

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Burhan Bazzaz, who acknowledged the relentless spirit of athletes, the support of members, print and electronic media, and especially thanked Jinab Mushtaq Ahmad Chaya for his generosity and encouragement in facilitating the smooth conduct of the event. His support, both moral and material, has been a lifeline for the association.

Amarnath Yatra a symbol of spiritual significance: PM Modi

PM Modi expresses pride and gratitude to scientists, remembers Pokhran tests

New Delhi, Jun 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday praised the deep spiritual and cultural significance of the Amarnath Yatra and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra during his monthly radio programme ëMann Ki Baatí, calling them not just journeys of faith but also powerful symbols of national unity and public service.

Highlighting the upcoming commencement of the Amarnath Yatra on July 3 and the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after a prolonged pause, PM Modi described these yatras as transformative experiences that transcend religious rituals.

ìWhen someone embarks on a yatra, the first feeling that comes to mind is, ëChalo Bulawa Aaya HaiÖí (Letís proceed amid the divine call…). This very feeling is the soul of our religious yatras,î he said.

The PM called the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra an ìauspicious re-startî and noted its spiritual resonance across multiple faiths.

Kailash is considered the centre of faith and devotion in every tradition – be it Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain, he said, referring to the sacred peak as the abode of lord Shiva.

Reflecting on the essence of such journeys, PM Modi said yatras serve as a means of ìdisciplining the body, purifying the mind, mutual love and brotherhood, and connecting with God.î

He also underlined their societal impact, noting how they become occasions for service, where people voluntarily organise bhandaras (free food), water stalls, medical camps, and accommodations for yatris.

The PM also spoke of the recent Rath Yatra of lord Jagannath, celebrated in Odisha, Gujarat, and other states.

He described Indiaís yatras as ìa reflection of the spirit of ëEk Bharat-Shrestha Bharatíî (One India, Great India).

PM Modi urged devotees to undertake their journeys with ìdevotion, dedication, and discipline.î

He extended best wishes to all yatris, commending those working tirelessly to ensure their safety and well-being.

ìI also commend those, who are engaged in making these yatras successful and safe with a spirit of service,î the PM said.

PM APPLAUDS YOGA EVENT AT WORLD’S HIGHEST RAIL BRIDGE

PM Modi also highlighted a remarkable celebration of International Day of Yoga that took place at one of Indiaís most iconic locations, the Chenab Rail Bridge in Reasi.

The bridge, known as the worldís highest railway arch bridge, served as a stunning and symbolic venue for the yoga event capturing the spirit of unity and wellness that International Day of Yoga represents.

The event was organised by the district administration Reasi under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nidhi Malik.

With enthusiastic participation from locals, officials, and yoga practitioners, the programme was a resounding success.

The backdrop of the Chenab Bridge set against the dramatic Himalayan landscape offered a powerful visual representation of the connection between physical health, natural beauty, and national pride.

DC Reasi Malik emphasised that this momentous occasion being mentioned by the PM in ëMann Ki Baatí was a matter of great pride for the Reasi district.

ìIt reflects not only the commitment of the local administration to national initiatives but also their ability to turn infrastructure and geography into opportunities for positive engagement. The recognition places Reasi firmly on the national stage and highlights its potential as a centre for innovative and meaningful public events,î she said.

Beyond national recognition, the event is expected to have a significant impact on the districtís future.

Tourism in Reasi, already buoyed by attractions like the Vaishno Devi shrine and the Chenab Bridge is likely to receive a substantial boost.

With growing interest in wellness tourism and adventure travel, such events promote the district as a destination that combines spiritual, physical and scenic experiences.

This can lead to increased economic opportunities for local communities, including job creation in tourism, hospitality, and allied sectors.

The success of this unique yoga event is a milestone for the Reasi district and serves as an inspiring example for other regions aiming to blend culture, wellness, and tourism.

ìThe district administrationís effort in making this event a reality has not only brought pride to Jammu and Kashmir but also set a benchmark for imaginative and impactful public engagement,î the DC said.

Ukrainian F-16 downed during Russian air assault as fighting intensifies

0
1 killed, several injured in fresh US airstrikes on Yemen's capital

New Delhi, Jun 29: Ukraine has confirmed the loss of an F-16 fighter jet and its pilot during efforts to repel a large-scale Russian air assault, amid continued heavy fighting in the fourth year of war reports Al Jazeera and International media.

The country’s air force said the aircraft was engaged in defending against a barrage of missiles and drones when it was damaged and lost altitude. Ukrainian air defences reportedly shot down seven targets before the fighter crashed overnight.

The pilot, identified as a first-class officer, was killed in the incident. The loss comes as Ukraine faces one of the most intense phases of Russian aerial attacks in recent months.

According to the Ukrainian military, Russia launched 537 aerial projectiles across the country, including Iranian-made Shahed drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. Ukraine claimed to have intercepted 475 of them. Multiple regions reported explosions and damage, including the southern city of Mykolaiv, southeastern Zaporizhia, western Lviv, and central Cherkasy. This latest escalation follows Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent remarks signalling a potential reduction in military spending and an openness to renewed peace negotiations. However, with no let-up in hostilities and continued aerial bombardments, prospects for any ceasefire remain distant.
