A bowl of spinach, kale and broccoli may boost heart health in elderly women

New Delhi, June 28: Eating a bowl of leafy green and cruciferous vegetables like spinach, kale, and broccoli may be good to ward off the risk of heart attack and stroke, particularly in elderly women.

A team of researchers from the Edith Cowan University (ECU), the University of Western Australia, and the Danish Cancer Institute found that leafy green vegetables — rich in Vitamin K1 — may help prevent atherosclerotic vascular diseases (ASVDs).

ASVD is a subgroup of cardiovascular diseases — the leading cause of death worldwide, primarily due to heart attacks and strokes. It causes plaque to build up inside the arteries, potentially leading to cardiovascular problems.

The research conducted in 1,436 elderly women showed that a higher dietary intake of Vitamin K1 could reduce the risk of ASVD.

In addition, Vitamin K may also be beneficial for musculoskeletal health, through its impact on bone strength.

Notably, a higher Vitamin K1 intake also leads to less thickening of blood vessels in the neck — a marker of atherosclerosis.

“Leafy green and cruciferous vegetables, like spinach, kale, and broccoli, contain Vitamin K1 which may assist in preventing vascular calcification processes that characterise cardiovascular disease. The great news is that these vegetables can be easily incorporated into your daily meals” said Montana Dupuy from ECU. ECU Senior Research Fellow Dr Marc Sim noted that a cup and a half of such vegetables is an easy way to increase our daily vitamin K intake and may lower our risk for cardiovascular disease”.

“This research found women who consumed approximately 30 per cent higher intakes of Vitamin K1 had lower long-term risk of ASVD,” he said.

As the research provided key evidence to support future studies, the team is now creating new foods that pack more leafy greens that are rich in Vitamin K1, to be used in communities with special nutritional and dietary requirements, such as aged care residents.

PM Modi extends best wishes to devotees going on Yatras, praises spirit of service

Mann Ki Baat: PM Modi extends best wishes to devotees going on Yatras, praises spirit of service

New Delhi, June 29: In the 123rd episode of his monthly radio show, ‘Mann Ki Baat’, on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended heartfelt wishes to devotees embarking on various religious yatras across the country.

He also lauded those who, with a selfless spirit of service, contribute to the smooth and safe conduct of these spiritual journeys.

“When one embarks on a pilgrimage, the first feeling that arises is ‘Let’s go, we have been called!’ This emotion is the soul of our pilgrimage. These pilgrimages are a means of discipline of the body, purification of the heart, of mutual love and brotherhood and a means to connect with God,” the Prime Minister said.

He added that beyond personal spiritual fulfilment, pilgrimages also represent collective service.

“There is another significant aspect to these journeys. These pilgrimages are also a great ritual of opportunities for service. Whenever a pilgrimage takes place, more people engage in serving the pilgrims than those who go on the pilgrimage. Everywhere, free community kitchens and food stalls are organised, people arrange for drinking water alongside the roads with a spirit of service, medical camps and facilities are set up, and many people even arrange lodging and rest houses for pilgrims,” he said.

PM Modi expressed joy over the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after a long gap.

“Kailash Mansarovar means the abode of Lord Shiva. In every tradition — be it Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain — Kailash is considered to be the centre of faith and devotion,” he noted.

Highlighting the spiritual vibrancy across India, he added, “The holy Amarnath Yatra is going to start from July 3, and the holy month of Sawan is also just a few days away. Just a few days ago, we have also seen the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath ji.”

The Jagannath Rath Yatra, one of the most sacred festivals of the country, draws lakhs of devotees from across the country, who converge at the temple town to take part in it every year.

He praised the scale and unity reflected in these events. “Whether it is Odisha, Gujarat, or any other corner of the country, millions of devotees participate in this pilgrimage. From North to South and from East to West, these pilgrimages reflect the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’,” he said.

“When we undertake these pilgrimages with full devotion and discipline, then we also receive their rewards,” the Prime Minister said, concluding with a message of goodwill.

“I extend my best wishes to all the fortunate devotees going on the various Yatras. I also commend those who are engaged in making these Yatras successful and safe with a spirit of service,” he said.

J&K to create unique family identification for every household

J&K to create unique family identification for every household

Srinagar, June 29: Jammu and Kashmir government is planning to create a unique family identification for every household in the Union territory, in a move to streamline the delivery of public services.

Officials said on Sunday that the initiative will also enhance beneficiary outreach and serve as a unified source of truth for planning and monitoring across government departments.

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired a high-level meeting on Saturday to lay the groundwork for creation of the family IDs for every household in Jammu and Kashmir, the officials said.

The chief secretary underscored the transformative potential of the family ID system, saying that creation of these IDs will provide invaluable insights into the traction of beneficiary-oriented schemes among the public, while simultaneously ensuring that every eligible citizen receives the benefits rightfully due to them.

“It is a critical step towards fostering a more accountable and responsive administration,” Dulloo said.

Secretary, Planning, Development and Monitoring Department (PD&MD),Talat Parvez, provided a comprehensive overview of the program.

While delving into background of the initiative, Parvez emphasised the pressing need for such a unified system in J-K, detailing the immense potential benefits for the populace and outlining a robust implementation plan.

Secretary, Information Technology Piyush Singla, elaborated on his department’s crucial role in achieving the objectives of this ambitious program.

He highlighted the substantial resources and technical expertise available within the IT Department.

He assured the meeting that the necessary infrastructure is in place to successfully translate this vision into reality across the entire UT.

A key challenge addressed during the discussions was the current practice of multiple government departments repeatedly requiring the same documentation and verification processes from citizens to disburse benefits, the officials said.

“This duplication not only places an undue burden on the public but also strains government resources. The family ID is set to resolve this by becoming a singular, authoritative source of information, thereby significantly reducing the hurdles besides optimising resource allocation,” they added.

The existing difficulties citizens face in accessing various government schemes and the administration’s challenges in effectively reaching out to the public with relevant programmes were also discussed.

“The family ID initiative is poised to be a definitive solution to this long-standing conundrum, ensuring that services are delivered seamlessly and efficiently to those who need them most,” the officials said.

Detailed deliberations were held regarding the primary sources of data for the family IDs, with specific mention of datasets from the Public Distribution System (PDS) and the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).

Future provisions for making necessary alterations, additions, or deletions to the family ID data were also thoroughly discussed, particularly in light of demographic changes arising from birth and death events, as well as migration.

95 crore people now benefiting from social security schemes: PM

0

New Delhi, June 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said around 95 crore people are benefiting from one social security scheme or the other, while till 2015, government schemes reached less than 25 crore people.

In his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast, Modi cited an International Labour Organisation (ILO) report which stated that more than 64 per cent of India’s population is getting some form of social protection benefit.

“Presently, most of the populace in India is taking advantage of one social protection benefit or the other and recently a very important report of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has come out. It has been mentioned in this report that more than 64% of the population of India is now definitely availing some sort of social protection benefit or the other,” Modi said.

This is one of the biggest coverages in the world, he said.

“Today, around 95 crore people of the country are getting the benefit of some or the other social security scheme; whereas, till 2015, the government schemes were reaching less than 25 crore people,” Modi said.

From health to social security, the country is moving ahead with the feeling of saturation in every field, he said.

“This is also a great picture of social justice. These successes have instilled a belief that the coming times will be even better; India will become even stronger at every step,” Modi said.

The prime minister also hailed as a “remarkable milestone” the World Health Organisation declaring India Trachoma-free and lauded the efforts of healthcare workers for the success.

Trachoma is a highly contagious bacterial infection, which has been a major cause of preventable blindness worldwide.

In his broadcast, Modi also extended his best wishes to all the fortunate devotees going on the various religious yatras.

“I also commend those who are engaged in making these Yatras successful and safe with a spirit of service,” he said.

He also said that across India, individuals and communities are becoming catalysts of change.

Their unwavering commitment to conservation is not only protecting nature but also safeguarding the future for generations to come, he said.

The prime minister also informed that people from Vietnam have expressed profound gratitude to India for facilitating the ‘darshan’ of the relics of “Bhagwan Buddha, a moving reminder of our timeless cultural bond”.

Implantable electronic device restores movement after spinal cord injury

Implantable electronic device restores movement after spinal cord injury

New Delhi, June 28: A team of Australian researchers has developed, and implantable electronic device has restored movement following spinal cord injury in an animal study, raising hopes for an effective treatment for humans and even their pets.

Spinal cord injuries are currently incurable with devastating effects on people’s lives, but now a trial at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland offers hope for an effective treatment.

“Unlike a cut on the skin, which typically heals on its own, the spinal cord does not regenerate effectively, making these injuries devastating and currently incurable,” said lead researcher Dr Bruce Harland, a senior research fellow in the School of Pharmacy at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.

“We developed an ultra-thin implant designed to sit directly on the spinal cord, precisely positioned over the injury site in rats,” Dr Harland added in a paper published in Nature Communications journal.

The device delivers a carefully controlled electrical current across the injury site.

“The aim is to stimulate healing so people can recover functions lost through spinal-cord injury,” said Professor Darren Svirskis, director of the CatWalk Cure Programme at the University’s School of Pharmacy.

Unlike humans, rats have a greater capacity for spontaneous recovery after spinal cord injury, which allowed researchers to compare natural healing with healing supported by electrical stimulation.

After four weeks, animals that received daily electric field treatment showed improved movement compared with those who did not.

Throughout the 12-week study, they responded more quickly to gentle touch.

“This indicates that the treatment supported recovery of both movement and sensation,” Harland said. “Just as importantly, our analysis confirmed that the treatment did not cause inflammation or other damage to the spinal cord, demonstrating that it was not only effective but also safe.”

The goal is to transform this technology into a medical device that could benefit people living with these life-changing spinal-cord injuries,” added Professor Maria Asplund of Chalmers University of Technology. The next step is to explore how different doses, including the strength, frequency, and duration of the treatment, affect recovery, to discover the most effective recipe for spinal-cord repair.

Elon Musk renews criticism of Trump’s big bill as it faces key Senate vote

Elon Musk renews criticism of Trump's big bill as it faces key Senate vote

Washington, June 29: Elon Musk on Saturday doubled down on his distaste for US President Donald Trump’s sprawling tax and spending cuts bill, arguing the legislation that Republican senators are scrambling to pass would kill jobs and bog down burgeoning industries.

“The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country,” Musk wrote on X on Saturday as the Senate was scheduled to call a vote to open debate on the nearly 1,000-page bill.

“It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future.”

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, whose birthday is also Saturday, later posted that the bill would be “political suicide for the Republican Party”.

The criticisms reopen a recent fiery conflict between the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency and the administration he recently left.

They also represent yet another headache for Republican Senate leaders who have spent the weekend working overtime to get the legislation through their chamber so it can pass by Trump’s Fourth of July deadline.

Musk previously made his opinions about Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” clear.

Days after he left the federal government last month with a laudatory celebration in the Oval Office, he blasted the bill as “pork-filled” and a “disgusting abomination”.

“Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it,” he wrote on X earlier this month.

In another post, the wealthy GOP donor who recently forecasted that he’d step back from political donations threatened to fire lawmakers who “betrayed the American people”.

When Trump clapped back to say he was disappointed with Musk, back-and-forth fighting erupted and quickly escalated. Musk suggested without evidence that Trump, who spent the first part of the year as one of his closest allies, was mentioned in files related to sex abuser Jeffrey Epstein.

Musk ultimately tried to make nice with the administration, saying he regretted some of his posts that “went too far”.

Trump responded in kind in an interview with The New York Post, saying, “Things like that happen. I don’t blame him for anything.”

It’s unclear how Musk’s latest broadsides will influence the fragile peace he and the president had enjoyed in recent weeks. The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Musk has spent recent weeks focused on his businesses, and his political influence has waned since he left the administration.

Still, the wealthy businessman poured hundreds of millions of dollars into Trump’s campaign in 2024, demonstrating the impact his money can have if he’s passionate enough about an issue or candidate to restart his political spending.

JKHARA seeks better amenities for Amarnath pilgrims

Srinagar, June 28: The Jammu and Kashmir Hotels and Restaurants Association (JKHARA) on Saturday urged the administration to provide adequate and efficient facilities for Amarnath pilgrims during the ongoing Yatra, calling for improved crowd management, healthcare support, and infrastructure upgrades.

In a statement, JKHARA President Babar Chowdhary said that during a recent civil society interaction with the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha—also attended by former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, and other senior officials—the Association submitted a detailed memorandum aimed at enhancing the pilgrim experience.

“We highlighted the urgent need for structured crowd control mechanisms, round-the-clock medical facilities, proper sanitation, and shelter arrangements at key points along the pilgrimage route,” Chowdhary said.

He noted that while the government has made commendable efforts for smooth conduct of the Yatra, there are still areas requiring focused attention to ensure the comfort and safety of pilgrims, especially during peak days of the journey.

Chowdhary also emphasised the role of the hospitality sector in supporting the Yatra and reiterated JKHARA’s commitment to coordinate with authorities to facilitate better services.

Babar Chowdhary  called for stronger inter-departmental coordination and continuous monitoring to address real-time issues faced by yatris.

JKHARA further suggested that steps such as designated medical camps, digital registration counters, and crowd dispersal plans be implemented rigorously to avoid congestion and distress during the pilgrimage.

The Association expressed hope that the administration would consider its recommendations and take swift action to elevate the standard of arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra 2025.
