J&K Govt constitutes team to hold talks with Punjab for smooth livestock movement, check overcharging

Srinagar, July 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has constituted a three-member team to coordinate with the Punjab Government for ensuring the smooth movement of livestock and preventing overcharging of transit trucks belonging to J&K livestock traders.

According to an order issued by the Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA), the team will visit Punjab to hold dialogues with concerned officers of the Punjab Government for an amicable resolution of issues faced by J&K livestock traders.

The team includes Mr. Manoj Prabhaker, Deputy Controller, Legal Metrology Department, J&K, Mr. Mohammad Rafeeq Bhat, Deputy Director, FCS&CA, Kashmir, and Mr. Sham Lal Abrol, Deputy Director, FCS&CA, Jammu.

The order states that the team shall submit a detailed report to the Administrative Department regarding the outcome of their visit for further action.

The decision follows a representation made by the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association, whose delegation, accompanied by affected transporters, met with the Chief Minister’s Advisor, Nasir Sogami, to raise alarm over these issues. The delegation, led by the Association’s National Convenor, Nasir Khuehami, alleged that Kashmiri truckers are being routinely stopped and blackmailed under the pretext of animal welfare regulations, and targeted with fabricated FIRs. They also accused local contractors, allegedly operating with the tacit support of certain officials of extorting money and leaving truckers stranded for hours under harsh conditions. (JKNS)

Hyderabad, Jul 30: There is no tsunami threat to the Indian coast following the 8.7 magnitude earthquake off the East Coast of Kamchatka in Russia, the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) here said on Wednesday.

“Based on pre-run model scenarios, there is no threat to India,” the centre said in a bulletin issued in the morning.

Meta's billion-dollar offers rejected by Top AI researchers team: Report

Srinagar, July 30: Thinking Machines Lab is an artificial intelligence research and product company led by Mira Murati, the former chief technology officer of OpenAI. The startup was valued at $12 billion in its seed round despite not having launched a product yet.

Not a single employee at Thinking Machines Lab has accepted Meta’s eye-popping job offers, according to a report by Wired. Despite offering massive compensation packages — including one reportedly worth $1 billion over several years — Meta has faced a wave of rejections from the AI startup’s talent pool.

Sources confirmed that several researchers were offered between $200 million and $500 million in stock and salary, to be vested over four years. Yet, as of now, no one has taken the deal.

Founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, Thinking Machines Lab has made waves in the AI industry despite not yet launching a product. The company was valued at $12 billion in its seed round.

Meta’s new Superintelligence Lab — led by Scale AI co-founder Alexandr Wang and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman — is struggling to attract top talent. Some insiders at Thinking Machines Lab reportedly view Wang’s leadership style and limited experience as concerning. Others are skeptical about Meta’s vision for AI, criticizing it as geared toward building content for Facebook and Instagram rather than pushing the boundaries of artificial general intelligence.

For now, it appears that Meta’s money isn’t enough to sway those who believe they’re working on something more meaningful.

Major sponsor withdraws from India-Pakistan WCL semifinal

Indian players refuse to play against Shahid Afridi in World Championship of Legends clash

New Delhi, July 30: With India and Pakistan once again set to meet in the World Championship of Legends semifinals, there is a question mark on the fate of the game as the top sponsor of the tournament announced that it will not be “associated with the India vs Pakistan match in WCL.”

WCL’s one of the main sponsors EaseMyTrip pulled out of the India-Pakistan WCL semifinal, reaffirming its longstanding policy of non-participation in any match involving Pakistan.

“We applaud Team India @India_Champions for their outstanding performance in the World Championship of Legends, you’ve made the nation proud. However, the upcoming semi-final against Pakistan is not just another game, Terror and cricket cannot go hand in hand. @EaseMyTrip, we stand with India. We cannot support any event that attempts to normalise relations with a country that promotes terrorism.

“The people of India have spoken and we hear them. EaseMyTrip will not be associated with the India vs Pakistan match in WCL. Some things are bigger than sport. Nation first business later, Always,” Nishant Pitti, co-founder of the travel-tech company said in a statement.

Earlier, the India-Pakistan league stage clash was officially called off, following strong objections from Indian players and a principal tournament sponsor in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year, which escalated military tensions between both nations.

“Despite entering into a 5-year sponsorship agreement with WCL, our stance has always been clear—EaseMyTrip will not be associated with or participate in any WCL match involving Pakistan,” the company posted. “We proudly continue to support the India Champions but will not support or promote any match that includes Pakistan. This position was unambiguously communicated to the WCL team from the start. Bharat First. Always,’ EaseMyTrip had said.

India reiterates support at UN for two-state solution to Israel-Palestinian conflict

Israeli strikes across Gaza kill at least 59 as Israel prepares to ramp up its offensive

United Nations, July 30: India told a high-level UN conference that global efforts must now focus on achieving a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict through “purposeful dialogue and diplomacy”.

It also said that one should not be content with paper solutions but strive to achieve practical ones.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish said on Tuesday that deliberations during the preparation for the UN High-Level International Conference on ‘The Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution’ confirm that the international community continues to believe there is no substitute for a two-state solution.

He said the conference offers an opportunity to reflect on the path traversed so far in the journey towards achieving peace through a two-state solution.

“Our efforts must now focus on how to bring about a two-state solution through purposeful dialogue and diplomacy, and bringing the parties to the conflict to engage directly with each other,” Harish said.

“Reaffirmation of support must take the form of actionable steps that pave the way for the two-state solution. Identification of such steps and their implementation modalities demand our collective attention and effort,” he said in the UN General Assembly.

The high-level conference on July 28-30 is co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France.

A 25-page outcome document titled ‘New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution’ asserted that the war in Gaza must end now and Hamas must free all hostages.

“In the context of ending the war in Gaza, Hamas must end its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority,” the outcome document said.

It added that following a ceasefire, a transitional administrative committee must be immediately established to operate in Gaza under the umbrella of the Palestinian Authority.

Harish noted that certain action points are emerging from the UN conference, and following up on them is the key.

“Let us not be content with paper solutions but strive to achieve practical solutions that actually make a tangible difference in the daily lives of our Palestinian brothers and sisters,” he said, expressing India’s complete readiness to contribute to this “noble endeavour.”

Harish said India has been clear on the measures that must be undertaken in the short term.

These include an immediate ceasefire, sustained and unimpeded humanitarian assistance, release of all hostages, and the path of dialogue and diplomacy.

“There are no alternatives to these measures,” he said.

Noting that in 1988 India became one of the first countries to recognise the State of Palestine with firm support and commitment to the two-state solution, Harish underlined that the overall sentiment in this forum is clear.

“It is also India’s earnest desire to see peace and calm prevail in the Middle East. Lasting solutions are required to achieve this,” he said.

Asserting that humanitarian aid to Gaza needs to flow without impediments, India said Palestinians in Gaza must have access to food, fuel and other basic necessities without hindrance.

“Humanitarian assistance is vital in sustaining life and must remain outside the realm of politics or conflict,” Harish said, underlining that the humanitarian assistance pillar demands “our immediate attention and action.”

India voiced concern that the human suffering in Gaza continues unabated, tens of thousands have been killed, several medical facilities damaged or destroyed, and children deprived of schooling for more than 20 months.

India also stressed that the plight of the hostages should not be forgotten.

“There can be no justification whatsoever for terrorism, for addressing any root cause or political grievance.”

Noting that civilians, including women and children, have the right to lead normal lives, India said that in the years ahead, “meticulous reconstruction and rehabilitation” efforts of a substantially large scale will be required.

Highlighting the vital aspect of security, India said a stable arrangement that suitably caters to the security needs of both sides is necessary.

“Neither party should feel insecure. A sovereign, viable and independent State of Palestine within recognised and mutually agreed borders, living side by side with Israel in peace and security, is a prerequisite for enduring peace and sustainable development.”

India further said that while aid and support are essential for the Palestinian people in rebuilding their lives, it is equally important to create hope and economic structures conducive for investment and employment.

India has been making concerted efforts to bring about a tangible impact on the daily lives of the Palestinian people by implementing human-centric projects in diverse sectors. The total commitment by India on this front stands at around USD 160 million.

“Economic prospects and viability for a Palestinian state are crucial,” Harish said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the conference that the central question for Middle East peace is the implementation of the two-state solution.

“My central question to those who stand in the way is this: What is the alternative?” Guterres said, questioning whether the alternative is a one-state reality where Palestinians are denied equal rights, and forced to live under perpetual occupation and inequality or a one-state reality where Palestinians are expelled from their land.

“That is not peace. That is not justice. That is not in accordance with international law. And that is not acceptable,” the UN chief said.

Guterres stressed that statehood for the Palestinians is a right, not a reward. “And the denial of statehood would be a gift to extremists everywhere.”

UN agencies warn that key food and nutrition indicators in Gaza have exceeded famine thresholds, reaching their worst levels so far.

Number of pilgrims likely to cross four lakh mark

Amarnath Yatra 2025: Number of pilgrims likely to cross four lakh mark

Srinagar, July 30: With over 3.93 lakh devotees having ‘darshan’ so far during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, the figure is likely to cross four lakh within the next two days.

On Wednesday, another batch of 1,339 Yatris left for the Valley from Jammu. The first escorted convoy of 16 vehicles carrying 328 Yatris left at 3.28 a.m. for Baltal base camp, while the second escorted convoy of 42 vehicles carrying 1,017 Yatris left at 3.48 a.m. for Pahalgam base camp.

In addition to this, many devotees are arriving directly for the Yatra, who avail of on-the-spot registration to undertake the journey to the two base camps.

Registration is available at both the base camps for those arriving directly. The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), which manages the affairs of the Yatra, has been facilitating the pilgrims to undertake the pilgrimage without facing hardships.

On the Nag Panchami occasion on Tuesday, ‘Chhari Pujan’ was performed at the Amareshwar Temple inside the Dashnami Akhara Building in Srinagar. The prayer was led by the sole custodian of Lord Shiva’s holy mace (Chhari Mubarak), Mahant Swami Deependra Giri, accompanied by Sadhus from across the country. It is the journey of the Chhari Mubarak that determines the landmarks of the Amarnath Yatra. It will start its final journey towards the cave shrine from the Amareshwar temple in Srinagar on August 4 and will reach the holy cave shrine on August 9, marking the official conclusion of the Yatra.

The Yatra involves high altitude trek in the Himalayas as the cave shrine is situated 3888 metres above sea level.

The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe the ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

The Yatra this year is being held under tight security watch following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Due to security reasons, no helicopter services are available to the Yatris this year. A heavy ring of multi-tier security comprising the Army, the BSF, SSB, CRPF and the J&K Police has been deployed to secure the Yatra.

The Army has deployed 8,000 specially trained commandos to augment the existing number of security men deployed on Yatra duties.
