Ranchi village on edge as tiger takes shelter inside home, rescue efforts on for 12 hours

Ranchi, June 25: Panic gripped Mardu village in Kocho Panchayat under Silli block of Ranchi district in Jharkhand early Wednesday morning after a full-grown tiger strayed into a residential house and remained holed up inside for over 12 hours.

The big cat reportedly entered the home of Puran Chand Mahato around 4.30 a.m. on Wednesday, just as Mahato returned from his night shift at the Hindalco factory in Muri.

As he stepped out to tend to his goats, he came face-to-face with the tiger. Thinking quickly, Mahato ushered his two daughters out of the house and locked the iron door behind them, trapping the predator inside.

Word of the incident spread like wildfire, drawing thousands of curious onlookers to the scene.

Authorities imposed prohibitory orders around the house by 11 a.m., restricting movement within a 200-metre radius on the orders of Ranchi Sadar SDO.

An eerie calm hung over the village even as forest officials and police personnel scrambled to manage the crowd and coordinate rescue efforts.

A local resident managed to take a partial image of the tiger through a hole drilled into the wall, which showed that the animal was crouched inside one of the rooms.

The Forest Department first dispatched a rescue team from Birsa Biological Park in Ormanjhi, but their attempts to tranquilize and capture the tiger were unsuccessful.

Subsequently, senior officials called in a more experienced unit from the Betla Tiger Reserve in Palamu.

As of 4.30 p.m., the tiger — estimated to be 6 to 7 feet long and suspected to be a Royal Bengal Tiger — remained locked inside the house.

The area, located near the West Bengal border, occasionally sees movement of wildlife, but an incident of this nature is extremely rare.

A full-scale operation involving tranquilizer guns and wildlife experts is underway, with hopes of capturing the tiger safely before nightfall.

BJP leader Ghulam Ali Khatana terms emergency as “dark chapter” of India’s democratic history

Srinagar, June 25: Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member, Ghulam Ali Khatana today stated that imposition of emergency on June 25, 1975 was blatant suspension of civil liberties, press freedom and democratic rights in the country. He was addressing a press conference at BJP headquarters here in Srinagar, to mark Emergency Day as a solemn reminder of the dark chapter in India’s democratic history.

BJP leader Khatana recalled the imposition of the emergency in 1975 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which lasted for 21 months and stated it saw a blatant suspension of civil liberties, press freedom, and democratic rights.

He termed it as the “blackest period in independent India” and paid tribute to all those who resisted authoritarian rule and sacrificed their freedom to uphold the Constitution and democratic values.

“The Emergency was a direct attack on the soul of our democracy. It is our duty to remind the new generations of this betrayal of constitutional governance,” Khatana said.

“Today, we rededicate ourselves to safeguarding the rights and freedoms of our citizens, as envisioned by our Constitution makers.”

MP Khatana emphasized the role of BJP as the true guardian of democracy, tracing its ideological lineage to the Jana Sangh, which was at the forefront of the resistance movement during the Emergency. He also lauded the sacrifices made by thousands of party workers, social activists, and opposition leaders who were jailed, tortured, and silenced during this period.

He further added that the observance of Emergency Day is not just an act of remembrance but also a warning against any future attempts to undermine democracy.

If statehood needs BJP CM, I’ll step aside; let centre be honest: J&K CM Omar Abdullah

If statehood needs BJP CM, I’ll step aside; let centre be honest: J&K CM Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, June 25: Demanding that the central government come clean about its intentions, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said he is ready to make way for a BJP Chief Minister if that is what it takes to restore statehood to J&K.

Omar said the central government should clearly state whether statehood will only be granted under a BJP-led government in Jammu and Kashmir.

“If statehood needs a BJP CM, I’ll step aside. At least the people of Jammu and Kashmir will get back their statehood,” he said.

Omar asserted that his government is fully committed to fulfilling the promises made to the people over a five-year term. He emphasized that expectations must align with democratic timelines.

“The mandate given to me is not for five weeks or five months, but for five years,” he said.

Highlighting recent developments, Omar noted improvements in the electricity supply compared to last year and progress on major infrastructure projects.

“Only yesterday, we approved a ₹10,600 crore package for road and tunnel connectivity,” he said.

Responding to PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Baigh’s remark that he should resign if he cannot deliver, Omar said: “Why should I resign? Did anyone resign in 2016 when people were dying? Back then, we were hearing about milk and toffees. No apology was ever made.”

Defending his government’s record, Omar said, “We haven’t betrayed our mandate. Did you expect the Assembly to pass a resolution for special status? You didn’t. But we did it.”

On the reservation issue, Omar said the matter has been referred to the Law Department for legal clarity.

“We want to ensure that no Cabinet decision gets stuck in court. That’s why we’ve followed due process,” he said.

He added that the sub-committee on reservation had worked faster than expected. “Many thought the committee would take six years, but it completed its report and submitted it quickly,” he said. “This problem wasn’t created by me, but I’m trying to solve it,” he added.

Omar also criticized PDP leaders for their silence when reservation quotas were being increased.

“Where was Mehbooba Mufti’s voice then? Where was Sajjad Lone’s voice? They were busy looking for government houses and security,” he said.

He alleged that PDP leaders avoided raising objections to safeguard electoral interests. “They wanted both Pahari and Gujjar votes in Rajouri-Poonch. So they told their candidates not to say a word about reservation. Now, after losing the elections, they are suddenly raising their voices,” he said.

He said the Cabinet will soon take a final call on the reservation issue once the Law Department completes its review.

“We are not touching the part of reservation that comes under Parliament. But we will act on the part that is within our authority,” he said.

He concluded by stressing that the government will avoid any move that could be legally challenged.

“We want to make decisions that are legally sound and beneficial to the people,” he said. (KNS)

'Not a law-abiding citizen': NIA opposes relaxation of bail conditions for PDP leader Waheed Para

Srinagar, June 25: As Kashmir reels under what experts describe as the worst irrigation crisis in a century, PDP leader Waheed-ur-Rehman Para has sharply criticized the Jammu and Kashmir government for what he said failing to respond to the unfolding agricultural emergency.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Para questioned why crucial positions in the Irrigation Department, including that of Chief Engineer Kashmir, other Chief Engineers (CEs), and Executive Engineers (XENs), continue to remain vacant even as large parts of the Valley face dry canals, failed pumping stations, and defunct irrigation schemes.

“The Irrigation Department is paralyzed. Why are key posts like Chief Engineer Kashmir, CEs, and XENs still vacant? Why can’t Hon’ble CM @OmarAbdullah fill this vacuum that’s fueling the disaster?” Para posted, tagging both the Chief Minister’s handle and the official handle of the J&K government. “Why sit on files while a crisis looms overhead?” he added.

Farmers across multiple districts, especially in south and central Kashmir, have reported failing paddy fields due to lack of water. Many irrigation canals are running dry, and several lift irrigation and tube well schemes are lying defunct due to poor maintenance and staff shortage.
