HC restores permission to Ludhiana trust to run Langar at Panchtarni

Jammu, Jul 23: The High Court of J&K and Ladakh at Jammu directed the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) to accord permission to Bhole Bhandari Charitable Trust, Ludhiana, to set up a traditional Langar at Panchtarni for the ongoing Amarnathji Yatra.

The court has given SASB one week’s time for compliance beginning July 22, 2025.

Justice Rahul Bharti of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh at Jammu, vide his judgment dated July 22, 2025, in WP(C) No 1185/2025, gave this direction to SASB while allowing the petition filed by Bhole Bhandari Charitable Trust (registered), Ludhiana.

The court held that the trust was arbitrarily and discriminatorily excluded by the authorities this year, despite an unblemished service record of 28 years and having received a valid NOC from the Camp Director for the Amarnath Yatra in 2024.

The court observed that such exclusion violates Articles 14 and 25 of the Constitution of India, affirming the fundamental right to perform service as a part of religious practice.

Rejecting the reply and objections of the respondents, Justice Bharti held that the petitioner (trust) had been victimised arbitrarily at the hands of the respondents (SASB and others), who “instead of being guided and governed by a policy and principle” were “being led by personal preferences and picks.”

“The respondents are hereby directed to immediately entertain the pending request of the petitioner-Bhole Bhandari Charitable Trust for being accorded permission to set up langar at Panchtarni for the remainder of this year’s Amarnath Yatra,” the court ruled.

Bhole Bhandari Charitable Trust Vice President, Bharat Bhushan Bharti, General Secretary Parveen Goel, and trustee Rajan Gupta said, ‘We are humbled by this judgment and grateful to the High Court for upholding truth and justice. Bhole Bhandari Charitable Trust remains committed to selfless service of the yatris, as we have done for nearly three decades. We appeal to the SASB for urgent compliance so we can resume serving devotees without delay.”

J&K farmers face uncertainty due to low returns, lack of market access

J&K farmers face uncertainty due to low returns, lack of market access

Srinagar, Jul 23: The Government of India has acknowledged that farmers across several states, including Jammu and Kashmir, have been compelled to sell their crops at a loss, despite increases in Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and efforts to expand crop insurance and infrastructure.

Responding to a Starred Question in the ongoing monsoon session in Lok Sabha, Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that while MSPs for 22 mandated crops have been significantly raised since 2018-19, procurement remains limited.

“The MSP regime ensures a return of at least 50% over the weighted average cost of production,” the minister said in a written reply. “However, farmers may choose to sell in the open market or to government agencies, depending on what is more beneficial.” Chouhan cited data showing procurement of 1,175 lakh metric tonnes of crops valued at Rs 3.33 lakh crore in 2024–25 (up to June 30).

However, he acknowledged gaps in implementation, particularly in states like Haryana, Jharkhand, and Jammu and Kashmir.

To address income disparities, the minister highlighted several central schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) for crop insurance, the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) to strengthen post-harvest systems, and support for Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to improve farmers’ bargaining power.

Digital platforms like the National Agriculture Market (e-NAM), and integrations with commerce networks like ONDC and GeM, are also being promoted to curb distress sales.

A committee was formed in July 2022 to suggest reforms for a more scientific and autonomous MSP mechanism and to modernize agricultural marketing systems.

For regions like Jammu and Kashmir, the government is also promoting organic farming under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), with cluster-based initiatives in hilly districts.

Suhail Bukhari, an officer in the Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Department, said that poor market access, especially in Kashmir, severely limits farmers’ income potential.

“Though Kashmir can supply vegetables during lean periods, connectivity to national and international markets is a major constraint,” he said, citing the lack of proper road and rail links for transportation of yield and absence of terminal markets or ports.

Bukhari also said that fragmented landholdings and the lack of cooperative farming models are major barriers. “Farming here is largely done on small plots. Cooperative or collective farming could help, but it’s missing,” he said.

While the government has introduced the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) to address some of these issues, Bukhari said much more needs to be done. “Strengthening FPOs can make a real difference by helping farmers access better markets and prices,” he added.

Despite government initiatives, the implementation of MSP procurement and related schemes in Jammu and Kashmir remains uneven.

Small landholdings, limited infrastructure, and weak post-harvest systems continue to expose farmers to volatile market conditions and low returns.

Climate change existential threat of planetary proportions, rules UN court

Hindu Kush Himalaya could lose 75 pc of ice by century's end under current climate policies: Study

New Delhi, July 23: In a ground-breaking climate ruling, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the prime judicial organ of the United Nations, on Wednesday ruled what the science “is saying that climate change is an existential threat of planetary proportions”.

Presenting the opinion in The Hague, court’s President Iwasawa Yuji said greenhouse gas emissions are “unequivocally” caused by human activities and acknowledged the “urgent and existential threat” posed by climate change.

“The consequences of climate change are severe and far-reaching. They affect both natural ecosystems and human populations. These consequences underscore the urgent and existential threat posed by climate change,” said Iwasawa.

Before the court’s 15 judges were two fundamental questions that is the obligations of states (nations) in respect of climate change: What are states’ obligations under international law to address climate change for present and future generations? And what are the legal consequences under these obligations for states failing to do so? The ICJ, the principal judicial organ of the UN, delivers its advisory opinion on the obligations of states in respect of climate change.

In response to the ruling by the ICJ, Mohamed Adow, Director of Nairobi-based think-tank Power Shift Africa, told IANS: “This ruling is a rocket boost for climate justice. The ICJ has confirmed what Africa has long demanded that rich nations must be held accountable for the damage their emissions have caused.

“For a continent like Africa — least responsible but most affected — this decision is a lifeline. It strengthens our call for reparations, debt relief, and real climate finance — not loans that deepen poverty.

“The era of polluters hiding behind vague promises is over. Africa will not be a sacrificial lamb for the excesses of others. The law now backs our moral case. It’s time for rich nations to pay their climate debt and support a just transition powered by Africa’s renewable energy potential.”

The ICJ was established by the United Nations Charter in June 1945 and began its activities in April 1946. The court is composed of 15 judges elected for a nine-year term by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations.

The seat of the court is at the Peace Palace in The Hague in the Netherlands.

India welcomes Iran-Israel ceasefire; urges for peace through dialogue, diplomacy

New Delhi, July 23: The Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday responded to allegations raised in a UK media report regarding misidentification of bodies repatriated after the June 12 Air India crash in Ahmedabad, affirming that all mortal remains were handled “with utmost professionalism and due regard for the dignity of the deceased.”

“In response to media queries regarding a report in the Daily Mail on the Air India crash, the Official Spokesperson, Shri Randhir Jaiswal, said: ‘We have seen the report and have been working closely with the UK side from the moment these concerns and issues were brought to our attention. In the wake of the tragic crash, the concerned authorities had carried out identification of victims as per established protocols and technical requirements. All mortal remains were handled with utmost professionalism and with due regard for the dignity of the deceased. We are continuing to work with the UK authorities on addressing any concerns related to this issue,’” the MEA said in a statement issued in New Delhi.

The comments come after the media reported that two British families alleged they had received the wrong bodies following the repatriation of remains from India. DNA testing reportedly indicated mismatches in at least two of the caskets sent to the UK after the crash of Air India flight AI171. According to lawyer James Healy, representing the affected families, 12 to 13 sets of remains were flown to the UK, with two families subsequently informed that the remains did not match their relatives based on DNA analysis, reports NDTV.

The ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, slamming into a residential complex near BJ Medical College. Of the 242 passengers and crew members onboard, only one survived.

Passport renewal in India- guide through each step

New Delhi, Jul 23: India has made the sharpest leap in the latest Henley Passport Index, climbing eight positions to rank 77th in 2025. Indian passport holders can now travel visa-free or obtain a visa on arrival in 59 countries, according to the Index released on July 22 and as reported widely by national media. While India added just two new destinations to its visa-free list, analysts say the move reflects growing international mobility and diplomatic outreach.

The Henley Passport Index, compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ranks 199 countries based on how many destinations their passport holders can enter without needing a visa in advance. Top Asian countries continue to dominate global mobility.

Singapore tops the 2025 list, with access to 193 countries without a prior visa. Japan and South Korea jointly hold the second position with 190 destinations, followed by seven EU countries, including France, Germany and Spain, with access to 189, reports moneycontrol.com

Meanwhile, U.S. and U.K. have slipped in the rankings. The U.S. passport now ranks 10th, while the U.K. has fallen to sixth place. At the bottom of the index, Afghanistan remains the weakest passport, with visa-free access to just 25 destinations.

For Indian travellers, the rise in rank, albeit incremental in terms of the number of new countries added, is seen as a marker of India’s growing global stature and connectivity in a post-pandemic world.
