Khamenei declares 'battle has begun' as Iran fires hypersonic missile at Israel

Tel Aviv, June 18: Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared that the “battle has begun” after Tehran launched a hypersonic missile at Israel. This escalation has intensified the already volatile conflict, as the military confrontation between Iran and Israel enters its sixth day on Wednesday.

Israel has carried out a series of devastating airstrikes on Iranian territory, reportedly killing at least 224 individuals. Among the casualties are senior military figures, nuclear scientists, and civilians. In retaliation, Iran launched several attacks on Israeli targets, resulting in the deaths of at least 24 people, including women and children, according to Israeli officials.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Israeli military confirmed the detection of additional missile launches originating from Iran.

The situation has drawn global concern, prompting US President Donald Trump to cut short his participation in the G7 summit in Canada. Before departing, he expressed firm support for Israel and issued a stark warning to residents of Tehran, advising them to evacuate in anticipation of potential escalation.

The conflict erupted last Friday when Israel initiated a large-scale offensive aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities. This action prompted swift and aggressive retaliation from Tehran, pushing the region closer to the brink of a broader war.

These developments come amid ongoing but fragile diplomatic efforts between Iran and the US to revive negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the media, stating that Israel’s actions have significantly delayed Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “I believe we have set them back a very, very long time,” he asserted.

US Prez Trump invited PM Modi to US, says FS Misri

US Prez Trump invited PM Modi to US, says FS Misri

New Delhi, June 18: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Wednesday said that US President Donald Trump invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Washington after his trip to Canada.

In a 35-minute-long phone call between the two leaders, Misri said, “President Trump asked if PM Modi could stop by the US on his return from Canada, but the Prime Minister expressed his inability due to prior commitments. However, both leaders agreed to try to meet soon.”

“They also discussed the Indo-Pacific and the vital role of the QUAD. Prime Minister Modi invited President Trump to India for the next QUAD summit, and President Trump accepted the invitation,” Misri said.

During this conversation, the Prime Minister also conveyed to US President Donald Trump that India does not seek and will never accept any mediation on matters related to Pakistan.

This was also the first exchange between PM Modi and President Trump since the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor.

The call took place after a scheduled in-person meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the G7 Summit was cancelled due to Trump’s early return to the US.

“The phone conversation was held at the request of President Trump,” said Misri, adding that PM Modi used the opportunity to detail India’s measured military response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 innocent tourists.

The attack was claimed by The Resistance Front, a group affiliated with the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.

“Prime Minister Modi said that on the night of May 6-7, India had targeted only terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. India’s actions were very measured, precise, and non-escalatory,” Misri said.

“India had made it clear that it would respond to Pakistan’s ‘goli’ with ‘gola’ (a strong, proportionate military response),” he said.

Operation Sindoor saw India strike nine high-value terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and PoK. In response, Pakistan launched military strikes not only on Indian military infrastructure but also on civilian and religious sites, prompting further escalation.

The Foreign Secretary also disclosed that on the night of May 9, US Vice President Vance conveyed to PM Modi that Pakistan could launch a major retaliatory strike.

“Prime Minister Modi told him clearly that if this happens, India will respond with even greater force. India’s strong counterattack on the night of May 9-10 caused heavy damage to Pakistan’s military. Several of their airbases were rendered inoperable,” Misri said.

He noted that following India’s forceful retaliation, Pakistan approached India with a ceasefire request.

“Prime Minister Modi stated that the ceasefire was agreed to only at the request of Pakistan and that India does not want mediation. He made it clear that at no point during this episode were India-US trade talks or third-party mediation discussed,” Misri stated.

“The halt to military action was discussed directly between the two countries through existing military channels,” he added.

Reiterating India’s long-standing position, Misri said, “Prime Minister Modi stressed that India has never accepted mediation, does not accept it, and will never accept it. There is complete political unanimity in India on this issue.”

President Trump, according to Misri, fully understood India’s position and expressed support for its fight against terrorism. PM Modi also informed Trump that India will consider any terror act emanating from Pakistan as an act of war, and that Operation Sindoor remains ongoing.

The conversation also covered international developments, including the Iran-Israel conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Both leaders agreed that direct dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv is necessary for peace.

Parents urge MEA for immediate evacuation of Indian students amid escalating tensions in Iran

Dubai, June 18: Israeli strikes have killed at least 585 people across Iran and wounded 1,326 others, a human rights group said Wednesday.

The Washington-based group Human Rights Activists said it had identified 239 of the dead as civilians and 126 as security personnel.

The group, which also provided detailed casualty figures during the 2022 protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, crosschecks local reports in the Islamic Republic against a network of sources it has developed in the country.

Iran has not been publishing regular death tolls during the conflict and has minimized casualties in the past. Its last update, issued Monday, put the death toll at 224 people killed and 1,277 others wounded.

Trump to meet Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir over lunch

0

Washington, June 18: US President Donald Trump will host Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, at the White House on Wednesday (local time).

The lunch meeting is scheduled to take place at 1:00 p.m. in the White House’s Cabinet Room, as per the official presidential schedule.

The reports of the meeting come just days after the White House denied that Munir was invited to the US Army’s 250th-anniversary celebrations held on June 14, contradicting earlier claims of his attendance at the parade.

Munir, who arrived in Washington on Sunday for a five-day official trip, is also expected to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to Pakistani daily Dawn.

The visit has been described as “primarily bilateral in nature” and aimed at reinforcing military and strategic ties between the two nations.

This meeting also comes amid the escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, a conflict that entered its sixth consecutive day. While Trump demanded “unconditional surrender” from Iran, the Pakistani Army chief had earlier expressed support for Tehran.

This is Munir’s first official trip to the United States since the April 22 terror attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians.

The attack, claimed by Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba’s offshoot, The Resistance Front, drew strong condemnation from India and heightened tensions with Pakistan.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar linked the Pahalgam massacre to what he termed as the Pakistani Army Chief’s “extreme religious outlook.”

Speaking to reporters last month, Jaishankar asserted, “To understand that, you have to see that on the Pakistani side, especially their Army chief, who is driven by an extreme religious outlook. There is clearly some connection between the views that were expressed and the manner the attack was carried out.”

The conflict subsided after Pakistan reached out to India with a ceasefire proposal.

Trump had claimed credit for brokering the truce, stating that he used trade leverage to encourage both parties to step back.

However, New Delhi swiftly denied that the United States played any mediatory role.

While Munir’s visit is being presented as an effort to stabilise military ties, it has not been without controversy. Supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan staged a protest outside the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, where Munir is staying.

The protesters, chanting slogans and accusing him of human rights abuses, labelled the Army Chief as the “Pakistanio ke qatil” and “Islamabad ke Katil,” turning the luxury hotel into an impromptu demonstration site.

One protester was heard shouting “Geedad, geedad, geedad (jackal, jackal, jackal)” — a pejorative expression meaning cowardliness and deception — as vehicles carrying officials arrived at the venue.

The episode, captured on video, quickly circulated on social media and was widely seen as a public embarrassment for the Pakistani military establishment.

PM Modi wraps up Canada G7 visit, heads to Croatia for final leg of Europe tour

New Delhi, June 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded the Canadian leg of his three-nation tour, describing his visit as “very productive” after participating in the G7 Summit and holding a string of bilateral meetings with world leaders. He has now departed for Croatia, where he is scheduled to conclude his overseas trip.

In a tweet posted just before departure, PM Modi wrote, “Concluding a productive Canada visit. Thankful to the Canadian people and Government for hosting a successful G7 Summit, which witnessed fruitful discussions on diverse global issues. We remain committed to furthering global peace, prosperity and sustainability.”

At the G7 outreach session in Kananaskis, Prime Minister Modi made a strong pitch for the ethical and sustainable use of Artificial Intelligence. “AI itself is an energy-intensive technology. If there is any way to sustainably fulfil the energy requirements of a technology-driven society, it is through renewable energy,” he said, underlining India’s leadership in the clean energy transition.

He also sounded a note of caution regarding the proliferation of deepfakes, calling it a “cause of great concern.” Modi suggested watermarking or mandatory disclosures for AI-generated content to preserve public trust and digital authenticity.

Bilateral Diplomacy on Sidelines

While in Canada, Prime Minister Modi held several bilateral meetings, including a significant first interaction with the newly elected German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Modi congratulated Merz on his recent electoral victory and assumption of office, and expressed appreciation for Germany’s solidarity following the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad last week. Both leaders affirmed their commitment to deepening the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, which marks 25 years this year.

Discussions ranged across trade and investment, green energy, defence cooperation, and digital innovation. According to an official readout, the two leaders “agreed that terrorism constitutes a major threat to peace and stability in the world.” Modi thanked Germany for its support of India’s anti-terror efforts and expressed eagerness to host Chancellor Merz in India in the near future.
Strengthening Ties with Mexico

In another key meeting, Prime Minister Modi met Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the first interaction since her historic election. Congratulating Sheinbaum, Modi thanked Mexico for backing India’s counter-terrorism measures and emphasised expanding economic and technological ties.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders discussed increasing collaboration in the fields of semiconductors, AI, quantum computing, critical minerals, and pharmaceuticals. The prospect of enhanced cooperation in start-ups, science and technology, and near-shoring manufacturing also figured in talks.

President Sheinbaum reportedly expressed strong interest in India’s strides in digital infrastructure and innovation. Both leaders agreed to intensify people-to-people and cultural exchanges and committed to furthering the shared priorities of the Global South.

A Final Stop in Croatia

Prime Minister Modi’s next and final stop is Croatia, marking the last leg of his multi-nation tour. The visit will focus on enhancing bilateral ties, especially in the areas of defence cooperation, education, tourism, and clean technology. This marks Modi’s first visit to Croatia as Prime Minister and follows a string of high-level diplomatic engagements.

Tourism in Kashmir begins slow recovery after Pahalgam tragedy; locals find hope

Tourism in Kashmir begins slow recovery after Pahalgam tragedy; locals find hope

Srinagar/ Pahalgam, Jun 17: After weeks of near silence across Kashmir’s iconic tourist destinations following the brutal terror attack in Baisaran, Pahalgam, the region is slowly seeing a tentative return of visitors.

Jammu and Kashmir administration’s announcement to reopen 16 offbeat destinations, the preparations for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, and the arrival of national travel operators in Kashmir have collectively given a much-needed boost to the region’s battered tourism industry.

The April 22 terror attack left 26 tourists dead in Baisaran and triggered panic across India’s tourism circuit.

Within 48 hours, tourism operators across Kashmir reported a complete collapse of bookings, with many stating that the situation was worse than the pandemic-era cancellations.

“After the attack, we witnessed 100 percent cancellations. There was not a single inquiry for almost a week,” said Mudasir Khan, a travel agency owner in Srinagar. “Even tourists who were already in Kashmir left midway. The fear was real, and we couldn’t even convince them to stay.”

The situation worsened as diplomatic tensions escalated between India and Pakistan shortly after the attack, casting further doubts in the minds of travellers and tour operators.

In an attempt to counter the fear and revive tourist confidence, the J&K government took swift steps by announcing the reopening of 16 tourist destinations.

“Our aim is not only to diversify Kashmir’s tourism offerings but also to assure tourists that the region is secure and welcoming,” said a senior official from the Department of Tourism. “We are collaborating with various agencies to ensure safety, particularly as we gear up for the Amarnath Yatra.”

The annual Amarnath yatra, scheduled to begin later this month, is expected to bring tens of thousands of yatris to the region.

The administration is already working with Police and security agencies to ensure tight security arrangements along the yatra routes, including the Baltal and Pahalgam tracks.

Officials say the yatra could play a crucial role in regaining the trust of the broader travelling public.

“When people see lakhs of yatris moving safely through Kashmir, it will send a strong message that Kashmir is safe,” the official said.

Even though large-scale tourism is yet to pick up, small signs of revival are visible. Travel agents and hoteliers in Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Gulmarg, and Srinagar confirm a modest but noticeable increase in tourist inquiries.

“We cannot say that tourism is back on track, but it has started limping back,” said Owais Ahmad, a hotelier based in Pahalgam. “There is a long road ahead, but at least we are seeing some movement.”

Interestingly, a number of national and regional tour operators from Mumbai, Delhi, Gujarat, and Bengaluru visited Kashmir over the past week for assessment tours.

Their presence is being viewed by local stakeholders as a positive signal.

For thousands of Kashmiris whose livelihoods depend on tourism – from taxi drivers and pony handlers to artisans and guides – the past fortnight has been painful.

Many said that this was supposed to be the peak season, but it feels like winter again.

Still, there is cautious optimism.

“We have faced worse situations and always bounced back,” said Fayaz Ahmad, a shikarawalla. “This time too, Inshallah, things will improve.”

PAHALGAM’S BETAAB VALLEY REOPENS

Meanwhile, tourists and local visitors trickled back to Pahalgam as the popular Betaab Valley reopened, nearly two months after the deadly Baisaran attack.

Betaab Valley, located about 6 km from the main Pahalgam, saw long queues outside the ticket counter as eager visitors arrived to take in Kashmir’s lush scenery, the flowing Lidder tributary, and surrounding mountains.

“For two months we sat idle, but with the reopening of these spots, we are hopeful our livelihood will return,” said Ishfaq Ahmad, a tourist guide.

All the parks and sightseeing locations in Pahalgam were closed after the April 22 attack.

“We were already excited to visit, but the warm welcome we received today made it even more special,” said Ravinder Singh, a tourist from Ferozepur, Punjab. “It feels safe again.”

Ali Khan, who came with his family from Lucknow, echoed similar sentiments.

“We have visited Kashmir before, and we are thrilled to be back,” he said. “This park reopening brings life back to the valley.”

For many locals who depend on tourism, the reopening marks a turning point.

“I used to sell shawls here before everything shut down,” said Afzal Sheikh, a vendor in Betaab Valley. “Now I hope the good old days will return.”

In Pahalgam town, Poshwan Park, Club Park, and Lavender Park also reopened and were abuzz with students, families, and tourists.

“I am happy to be here again,” said Mushtaq Ahmad, who brought his family from Anantnag. “It feels like we are reclaiming something we had lost.”

Elsewhere in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, parks and botanical gardens in Achabal, Kokernag, and Verinag also saw crowds of eager visitors.

Students, families, and tourists stood in queues, waiting to enter.

“I am relieved Verinag Garden is open again,” said a local restaurant owner. “Our businesses rely on these places. This will help us get back on our feet.”

Tourist Police personnel were deployed across major sites to ensure smooth entry and offer assistance.

Local legislator Ghulam Ahmad Mir visited Verinag Garden and greeted tourists and locals, praising their resilience and encouraging more visitors to return.

“Kashmir is open again,” he said, “We welcome everyone with open arms.”

In the Jammu region, tourist spots have reopened in Sarthal and Dhaggar in Kathua district, Devipindi, Siyad Baba, and Sula Park in Reasi, Guldanda and Jai Valley in Doda, and Pancheri in Udhampur.

As the government continues to reopen sites in phases, residents and tourism stakeholders remain hopeful that Kashmir’s travel industry will recover from the shock of the April attack.

“Tourists should not be afraid to come,” said Singh, a tourist from Punjab. “This place is still heaven on earth.”

US urges citizens to avoid Middle East travel amid escalating conflict

New Delhi, Jun 17: As hostilities between Israel and Iran intensify, US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce Wednesday said that President Donald Trump remains firm in his position that Iran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.

Addressing reporters at a press briefing, Bruce announced the formation of a dedicated Middle East task force within the State Department.

The unit is tasked with coordinating support for US citizens and diplomatic missions in the region.

She reiterated the department’s travel advisory, urging Americans to avoid travel to Israel, Iraq, and Iran given the deteriorating security situation.

“The task force includes personnel actively responding to calls from American citizens across the globe and ensuring they receive the assistance they need,” Bruce said.

Noting the sensitivity of the situation, she cautioned that she would be limited in the details she could provide during the briefing.

“There will be less that I can answer today because of the circumstances we’re dealing with around the world,” she said.

When asked to clarify President Trump’s recent remarks expressing a desire for a “real end” to the Iran-Israel conflict. “We can take the president at his word,” Bruce responded. However, she declined to elaborate on the broader implications of Trump’s statement. “I’m not going to speculate on what that ultimately means. That’s for the president to decide—he is the sole guiding authority on what actions will follow from here,” she added.

No helicopter services for Amarnath Yatra 2025: SASB

No helicopter services for Amarnath Yatra 2025: SASB

Jammu, Jun 17: With an avowed objective of bolstered security during the Shri Amarnathji Yatra, 2025, J&K Government has declared all the routes of Yatra as ‘No Flying Zones’, including Pahalgam axis and Baltal axis, from July 1 to August 10, 2025.

Flying of any kind of aviation platforms and devices including UAVs, drones, balloons will not be allowed during this period.

As a consequence there will be no helicopter services available for pilgrims during Shri Amarnathji Yatra (SANJY) 2025.

This has been made clear by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) itself, on its official site, in an important notice splashed for pilgrims planning to undertake Yatra this year (2025), while referring to the official ‘No Fly Zones’ order.

SASB, while asking the pilgrims to take note of the same, asked them to reach the holy cave shrine on foot or avail the services of ponies and palkis throughout the Yatra.

Cases of medical evacuation, disaster management and surveillance by security forces will, however, remain out of the purview of these restrictions.

Move, as part of security arrangements being undertaken for smooth and incident-free Yatra, is in consonance with the advisory of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

An order in this connection was issued by the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on June 16, 2025, a day ahead of the high-level security review meetings chaired by the Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan in Srinagar vis-à-vis arrangements pertaining to high-stake Amarnath Yatra beginning July 3 and prevailing J&K situation.

“In view of the forthcoming Shri Amarnathji Yatra, 2025, which is scheduled with effect from July 3, 2025 to August 9, 2025, various security arrangements are being undertaken for smooth and peaceful conduct of the Yatra. All the stakeholders have discussed the prevailing security scenario in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir and have proposed additional logistics provisions,” Principal Secretary, J&K Home Department Chandraker Bharti said in the order, issued on behalf of the Lieutenant Governor.

Bharti has pointed out that the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India (GoI), has also advised that the “entire route of Shri Amarnathji Yatra, 2025 may be declared as ‘No Flying Zone’ with effect from July 1 to August 10, 2025.”

“Now, therefore, with a view to ensure strengthened security during the Shri Amarnathji Yatra, 2025, all the routes of Shri Amarnathji Yatra are hereby declared as ‘No Flying Zone’ including both Pahalgam axis and Baltal axis and thus, flying of any kind of aviation platforms and devices including UAVs; drones; balloons, etc., is prohibited with effect from July 1, 2025 to August 10, 2025,” the order read.

“These restrictions will not be applicable in the cases of medical evacuation, disaster management and for surveillance by security forces. A detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for such exceptions will be issued subsequently. This order shall remain in force with effect from July 1, 2025 to August 10, 2025,” it was instructed.

Following order, SASB on its official site has also notified non-availability of chopper services for pilgrims during 2025 Yatra.

“Competent Authority has, vide Government Order No 316–HOME (ISA) of 2025, dated June 16, 2025, declared all routes of the Shri Amarnathji Yatra—including both the Pahalgam and Baltal axes—as a ‘No Flying Zone’ from July 1 to August 10, 2025. Consequently, helicopter services for pilgrim travel shall not be available in the Yatra area during Shri Amarnathji Yatra (SANJY) 2025,” the notice on SASB site read.

“All pilgrims planning to visit the Holy Shrine during this Yatra are advised to take note of the same. Pilgrims may reach the Holy Cave Shrine on foot or avail the services of ponies and palkis throughout the Yatra. Thank you for your cooperation,” it added.

Notably, on May 29, immediately after his arrival on two-day visit to J&K, post “Operation Sindoor”, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah had chaired a high-level security meeting to review preparations for Shri Amarnath Yatra, at Raj Bhawan in Jammu. Singular focus was on “fool-proof security grid” to tackle all challenges in the evolving situation.

Evaluating the security arrangements and preparedness meant for the pilgrims, Shah had instructed for maintaining the utmost vigilance and ensuring the seamless completion of the sacred journey.

“Central government and J&K administration will leave no stone unturned to facilitate the pilgrims with all necessary facilities,” the Union Home Minister had asserted.

Following it, the Lieutenant Governor too reviewed the security arrangements for the forthcoming Yatra in a high-level meeting with senior officials on June 13.

In a comprehensive review of the security apparatus and measures deployed by the security agencies to ensure safety of the pilgrims, Sinha directed for seamless coordination among the civil administration; Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board; J&K Police; Army; Security Forces and all the other crucial stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and successful holy pilgrimage.

He assessed the working of the security grid and also reviewed the contingency plan, deployment of Police and security personnel, preparedness and response mechanism of line departments.

Prior to it, on June 11, the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who is also the Chairman of Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board, inspected the maintenance, upgradation and widening of Baltal Yatra track enroute the holy cave.

This was the maiden visit to the shrine by any chairman of SASB through Baltal track – a shorter route yet considered to be quite treacherous.

LG Sinha had announced that the alternate route from Chandanwari to Pissutop would be made available with safety hand railing and surfacing for Yatra 2025 for facilitating the on-foot yatris and better managing the Yatra along the Chandanwari axis.

The safety hand railing in vulnerable stretches has been developed on Pahalgam route while the unstable formations along both the routes have been addressed with gabion and breast walls, ILC fence and installation of wire mesh to overcome the danger possessed by the shooting stones.

From the security point of view, though Amarnath Yatra always remains a challenge for the government as well as the security agencies yet post Pahalgam attack, the stakes have become quite higher.
