Tourists feel 'safe' in Srinagar, applaud warmth and support of locals

Jammu, Jul 21: Setting a new record, over 3 Crore tourists – the highest ever – visited Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2024, and this number also included 65452 foreign tourist visits.

The Union Territory saw 2,35,24,629 domestic tourists visiting during the year 2024, thus registering an annual growth of 13.76 percent in domestic tourist traffic, while foreign tourist traffic witnessed 18.28 percent annual growth during this period.

This was revealed by the Union Tourism Minister Ganjendra Singh Shekhawat in a written reply to a question of BJP MP Tejasvi Surya in the Lok Sabha on Monday (July 21, 2025).

During the past five years, J&K saw the footfall of over 7 crores domestic tourists and over 1 lakh foreign tourists. In the year 2020, a total of 23,19,524 domestic tourists and 5317 foreign tourists enjoyed the natural splendour of J&K.

This number spiralled up to 1,13,14,290 domestic tourists registering an annual growth of 349.09 percent – highest ever- and 1650 foreign tourists in the year 2021. In case of foreign tourists, the year marked a negative annual growth of 68.97 percent, seemingly COVID effect.

Interestingly, 2022 saw record-breaking annual growth of 1111.21 percent in foreign tourist traffic with a footfall of 19,985 while in case of domestic front, 1,84,99,332 tourists visited, registering 63.50 per cent annual growth.

In the year 2023, J&K recorded 2,06,79,336 domestic tourist visits and 55,337 foreign tourists with an annual growth of 11.78 percent and 176.89 percent, respectively.

Union Tourism Minister also informed that the Ministry of Tourism, under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, sanctioned a total of six projects in the year 2016-17 for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, with a total sanctioned cost of Rs 519.58 Cr.

All these projects have since been physically completed.

These projects sanctioned under Swadesh Darshan scheme in UT of Jammu and Kashmir included development of Jammu-Srinagar-Pahalgam-Bhagwati Nagar-Anantnag-Salamabad-Uri-Kargil-Leh for Rs 77.33 Cr; development of tourist facilities at Jammu-Rajouri-Shopian-Pulwama for Rs 81.60 Cr; development of tourist facilities – construction of assets instead of those destroyed in 2014 floods under PM development package for Rs 90.43 Cr; development of tourist facilities at Mantalai and Sudh Mahadev for Rs 91.99 Cr; development of tourist facilities at Anantnag-Pulwama-Kishtwar-Pahalgam-Zanskar Padum-Daksum-Ranjit Sagar dam for Rs 86.39 Cr and development of tourist facilities at Gulmarg-Baramulla-Kupwara-Kargil-Leh for Rs 91.84 Cr.

All these projects are part of the ambitious Himalayan circuit.

Shekhawat, however, stated, “The Ministry has not undertaken any formal study to date to assess the extent of direct and indirect employment generated in the region under the Scheme during the last five years.”

Notably, the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22 and developments that unfolded in its aftermath upset this upswing in the tourist influx to J&K in the second quarter of 2025.

JLNM Hospital redefines allergy care

JLNM Hospital redefines allergy care

Srinagar, Jul 21: Tucked between bustling neighbourhoods and the echo of a centuries-old graveyard, Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial (JLNM) Hospital in Srinagar has long served as a beacon of healing for the people of the Valley.

But over the past year, this 145-year-old district hospital has emerged as something more – a centre of pioneering allergy care and medical innovation, rewriting the narrative of public healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir.

Since October 2023, the hospital’s Division of Allergy-Immunology has been quietly revolutionising patient care, serving nearly 200 patients every week.

With over 400 skin prick tests conducted for food and aeroallergens and 65 drug challenge tests performed, the hospital has become a crucial lifeline for those navigating complex allergic conditions.

What sets JLNM apart is not just the numbers, but its national distinction of being the only district hospital in India with a dedicated drug allergy management facility, a milestone that has attracted patients from across Kashmir and beyond.

Adding further depth to its services, the division has developed a Kashmir-specific allergy testing panel, rooted in local research, to address regional sensitivities with precision.

This initiative has transformed JLNM into a referral hub for allergy diagnostics, its influence now reaching even outside J&K.

The hospital’s collaborations with international institutions, notably Birmingham Medical University, have further elevated its standing, placing it among select centres in the country contributing to global allergy research.

TRIPLE MILESTONE MOMENT

On July 11 and 12, JLNM Hospital transcended its role as a healthcare facility, transforming into a space of intellectual exchange, innovation, and celebration.

Over two days, it hosted ‘Allergy Alert: Alleviating Allergies’, a first-of-its-kind regional conference dedicated solely to allergy awareness and care, a bold initiative in a field often sidelined in mainstream medicine.

The event drew experts, researchers, and young medics under one roof.

Inaugurated by Minister for Health and Medical Education Sakina Itoo, the conference highlighted the daily struggles of allergy patients and the pressing need for focused care. Guest of honour Tanvir Sadiq lauded the hospital’s efforts and pledged support for a new auditorium and advanced diagnostic tools, affirming the administration’s commitment to modernising healthcare infrastructure in Kashmir.

AJCPR LAUNCH

A moment of pride came with the unveiling of the Asian Journal of Clinical Practice and Research (AJCPR), a publication envisioned and developed by the hospital’s doctors.

The journal symbolises JLNM’s transformation into a knowledge-generating institution, where research and clinical service go hand in hand. “Let this inspire young medicos to merge research with care,” said Dr Jahangir Bakshi, Director of Health Services Kashmir, praising the hospital’s achievement in launching a peer-reviewed journal from a district-level institution.

VOICES OF FUTURE

A key highlight of the event was the research presentation session by postgraduate students.

For many, it was their first experience presenting scientific data.

Their enthusiasm and rigour were met with resounding applause as Minister Sakina Itoo felicitated the best presenters, symbolising a generational handover of responsibility and hope.

TEAM BEHIND TRANSFORMATION

The journey from concept to execution was led by Dr Taha Ashraf and Dr Irfan Rasool Gadda, but both emphasised the role of a dedicated team including Dr Asifa Jan, Dr Akhtar Ganaie, Dr Shakib Nabi, Dr Nasir Shamas, Dr Masarat Sultana, and Dr Altaf Khan.

According to them, the visit of the Secretary of Health and Medical Education, Syed Abid Rashid Shah, catalysed this transformation. They said that his emphasis on “publish or perish” became a clarion call for the team to aim higher.

MORE THAN A HOSPITAL

Addressing the gathering at the event, Medical Superintendent Dr Muhammad Tariq Jan said, “This is more than an event. It is a stride, a stride for every district hospital that dreams beyond boundaries.”

HoD Medicine and Organising Chairman, Dr Shahzada Parray, echoed the sentiment, saying, “Care is not just about treatment. It is about learning, sharing, and daring to dream bigger.”

Dhankhar’s resignation flags off race for next VP

Dhankhar's resignation flags off race for next VP

New Delhi, July 21: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s abrupt resignation on Monday evening has opened the contest for his successor.

With the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) enjoying a majority in the electorate, which includes the members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, taken by surprise by Dhankhar’s decision to quit, it is likely to consider the probable names in the coming days.

One of the governors, as Dhankhar was of West Bengal before taking the vice president’s office, or a seasoned organisational leader or one of the Union ministers — the BJP has a large pool of leaders to choose from for the position.

Dhankhar’s predecessor was M Venkaiah Naidu, a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president who was in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was tapped by the party for the key constitutional position in 2017.

“We are still processing it. But I believe the party will choose someone who is a solid choice and is non-controversial,” a BJP leader said, suggesting that a veteran party hand might be the preferred option.

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, a Janata Dal (United) MP, is also being seen as a probable as he has been serving in the position since 2020 and enjoys the government’s trust.

Dhankhar’s three-year tenure was marked by his frequent run-ins with opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha but his voluble commentary, often on contentious issues, left the government less than amused at times.

In a sudden move, Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening, citing medical reasons.

He has sent his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu and said he is stepping down with immediate effect.

“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution,” Dhankhar said in his letter to the president.

Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022 and his tenure was till 2027.

He was also the chairman of the Rajya Sabha and his resignation came on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament.

Dhankhar’s abrupt resignation followed a day of surprising developments in the Rajya Sabha for the government, as an opposition-sponsored notice for a motion to remove Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma was submitted to him and he mentioned it in the House.

The development came as a jolt to the ruling alliance, which had sponsored a similar notice in the Lok Sabha and taken the opposition on board.

Dhankhar was the NDA’s candidate in the election for the vice president, who is also the ex-officio Chair of the Rajya Sabha, in 2022.

67 killed in Gaza as Israeli strikes hit aid seekers amid growing hunger crisis

67 killed in Gaza as Israeli strikes hit aid seekers amid growing hunger crisis

New Delhi, Jul 21: At least 67 people were killed in northern Gaza while waiting for aid deliveries, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, as Israel faces growing criticism over the humanitarian toll of its military campaign, reports the BBC. The incident occurred near a 25-truck UN World Food Programme convoy, which reportedly came under fire shortly after entering the area, BBC reported. The Israeli military acknowledged firing warning shots to disperse what it described as an immediate threat but disputed the reported death toll.

Meanwhile, Gaza’s civil defence agency later updated the number of casualties from Israeli attacks across the enclave to 93, including 80 in northern Gaza. Additional deaths were reported near aid distribution sites in Rafah and Khan Younis in the south.

As hunger intensifies, health officials in Gaza have reported rising numbers of people arriving at medical facilities in critical condition due to starvation. At least 18 deaths from famine were recorded over 24 hours. The World Food Programme described the situation as catastrophic, with nearly one in three people going without food for days and tens of thousands of women and children in urgent need of nutritional support.

Hospitals, including Gaza City’s Shifa facility, remain overwhelmed as more bodies are brought in from aid queue shootings and airstrikes. Crowds at aid points are growing increasingly desperate, amid frequent gunfire incidents targeting civilians seeking food, many of them near facilities run by both the UN and the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Meanwhile, the Israeli military has issued evacuation orders for parts of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, an area previously untouched by ground offensives. Leaflets dropped over the city instructed residents and displaced families to move westward towards al-Mawasi. The move has prompted widespread panic, especially among relatives of Israeli hostages who are feared to be held in the area.

The military has conducted airstrikes in the vicinity but has not yet moved in with ground forces. Israeli sources have suggested that concerns over the presence of hostages have delayed a full incursion. Deir al-Balah is currently home to thousands of displaced people living in makeshift shelters. More than two million people across Gaza have been displaced since the conflict began in October 2023. The worsening humanitarian crisis has drawn international attention. On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV called for an immediate end to hostilities, denouncing the ongoing violence and calling for restraint in the use of force. His comments followed a recent Israeli airstrike that hit Gaza’s only Catholic church.

Smartphones before 13 may raise suicidal thoughts, aggression risk in youth: Study

Smartphones before 13 may raise suicidal thoughts, aggression risk in youth: Study

New Delhi, July 21: Children who own a smartphone before the age of 13 are more likely to experience poorer mental health and well-being in early adulthood, according to a global study of more than 100,000 young people released on Monday.

The study, published in the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities, found that 18- to 24-year-olds who had received their first smartphone at age 12 or younger were more likely to report suicidal thoughts, aggression, detachment from reality, poorer emotional regulation, and low self-worth.

Smartphones give early social media access and increase the risks of cyberbullying, disrupted sleep, and poor family relationships by adulthood, the team said.

“Our data indicates that early smartphone ownership — and the social media access it often brings — is linked with a profound shift in mental health and well-being in early adulthood,” said lead author neuroscientist Dr. Tara Thiagarajan, the founder and Chief Scientist of US-based Sapien Labs.

Thiagarajan called for urgent action to protect the mental health of future generations, as their symptoms are not the traditional depression and anxiety, and can be missed by studies using standard screening procedures.

The researchers urged policymakers to adopt a precautionary approach, similar to regulations on alcohol and tobacco, by restricting smartphone access for under-13s. They also called for mandating digital literacy education and enforcing corporate accountability.

In recent years, several countries have banned or restricted the use of cell phones in institutions, including France, the Netherlands, Italy, and New Zealand. Several states in the US have also passed legislation requiring schools to have policies that at least limit access to smartphones for children.

For the study, the team at Sapiens mapped the data on 100,000 young adults using the Mind Health Quotient (MHQ) — a self-assessment tool that measures social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being — to generate an overall mental health score.

Young adults who received their first smartphone before age 13 had lower MHQ scores, with scores progressively declining the younger the age of first ownership.

Younger ownership was also linked with diminished self-image, self-worth, and confidence, and emotional resilience among females, and lower stability, calmness, self-worth, and empathy among males.

“Our evidence suggests that childhood smartphone ownership, an early gateway into AI-powered digital environments, is profoundly diminishing mental health and well-being in adulthood, with deep consequences for individual agency and societal flourishing,” Thiagarajan said.
