CM Omar warns of ‘wrong message’ to nation

“Local people must not suffer while catching Pahalgam attack culprits”: CM Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, Jun 17: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Monday said that this year’s restriction on helicopter service for the Amarnath Yatra was unusual and could send a wrong message to the rest of the country.

“Amarnath Yatra is a good thing. We also want the yatra to go well. The only strange thing is that this time the helicopter service is not being allowed,” local news gathering agency KNS quoted the CM as saying while talking to reporters outside the Srinagar airport after receiving the first batch of Hajj pilgrims returning from Saudi Arabia.

He said this was the first time in many years that such a restriction had been imposed.

“A wrong message is going to the rest of the country. I do not have the intelligence inputs on which this decision was made, but this is the first time in so many years that the helicopter service is not being allowed,” CM Omar said.

Copenhagen named world's most liveable city in 2025

New Delhi, Jun 17: Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, has been named the world’s most liveable city for 2025, topping the annual rankings released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on Tuesday, reports Reuters. For the past three years, Austria’s Vienna held the number one spot. But this year, it slipped to second place, sharing the position with Zurich, Switzerland.

The EIU ranked 173 cities based on five key factors: healthcare, education, stability, infrastructure, and environment. Copenhagen scored perfect marks for stability, education, and infrastructure, which helped it rise to the top.

Vienna, despite strong performance in most areas, lost points in the stability category. This drop was partly due to security concerns, including a bomb threat that led to the cancellation of a Taylor Swift concert last year. Other cities in the top ten include Melbourne (4th) and Geneva (5th). Sydney moved up to 6th place, while Osaka and Auckland tied for 7th. Adelaide came in 9th, making it the third Australian city in the top ten. Canada’s Vancouver rounded out the list in 10th place.

Chugh hails reopening of tourist spots in J&K

Chugh hails reopening of tourist spots in J&K

Jammu, Jun 17: BJP National General Secretary and J&K in-charge Tarun Chugh today lauded the Lieutenant Governor (LG)  Manoj Sinha’s decision to reopen 16 out of the 48 tourist destinations in Jammu and Kashmir, a press release said.

It added that these destinations were closed following the cowardly terror attack in Pahalgam. He said that the return of tourists to the region reflects the Modi government’s unshakable resolve to restore peace and promote prosperity in the valley.

Chugh asserted that Pakistan’s ISI and its terror proxies had conspired to cripple the tourism economy of J&K, but “Operation Sindoor” delivered a decisive blow to their agenda. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, a clear and powerful message has been sent to Pakistan – India will not tolerate any attempt to disturb peace in Jammu & Kashmir. The nation will respond with strength, not silence,” he said.

The BJP leader said that the growing footfall of tourists in the region is a testament to people’s trust in the Modi government’s security apparatus and developmental vision. He added that the Amarnath Yatra this year is expected to witness record participation, serving as a strong statement of India’s unity, faith, and defiance in the face of terror.

“Terrorism will not dictate our calendar or our culture. Pakistan’s plans to spread fear in the valley have failed yet again. Jammu and  Kashmir is moving ahead with confidence, and this is the true reply to those who wish to keep the region in turmoil,” Chugh said.

Dalri village in Rafiabad belt craves for official attention

Dalri village in Rafiabad belt craves for official attention

Baramulla, Jun 17: Nestled amid lush green forests and towering mountains, Dalri village in Rafiabad area, located at the far edge of Baramulla district has remained the victim of official apathy. From road connectivity to mobile connectivity, this village has faced neglect in every aspect.

The basic development in this village remains a distant dream for the residents here. Dalri, a remote and marginalized village falls in Tehsil Dangiwacha of Baramulla district which has remained out of sight from the administration. A visit to the village reflects the official neglect it has faced over the years. “The village lacks even the most basic road connectivity to Ashpora village which is the nearest serviceable settlement,” said Tahir Ahmad,a local resident. According to the residents, lack of road connectivity severely affects the local population, especially students who are forced to traverse unsafe and long distances in order to access education beyond the primary level. “The situation is not only a matter of infrastructure, but one that impacts education, health, and overall social mobility,” he said.

The youth of Dalri, particularly those aspiring to continue their studies beyond Class 8, are being systematically excluded due to this infrastructural gap.

In view of the official neglect, the residents of the area have sent an open invitation to the minister for Agriculture Javed Ahmad Dar who is also the MLA from the same constituency to visit the area and have firsthand experience. “Dalri lacks proper road connectivity with nearby village Ashpora which falls in District Kupwara. The Student community who are supposed to take admission in 8th class face immense hardships due to lack of a trafficable road and traffic facility,” said Firdous Ahmad, another resident of the nearby village. “The lack of a road and reliable transport facility has become a major hurdle, particularly for the student community,” he said.

According to the residents, immediate attention and intervention are required to ensure that these young learners are not deprived of their right to education due to poor infrastructure. The resident also complained that while a BSNL tower exists, it provides no internet coverage, leaving students, youth, and residents digitally excluded.

“This directly impacts education, emergency response, and access to government schemes that are now primarily online,” the residents told Greater Kashmir. The locals said that the absence of a regular transport service disconnects Dalri from surrounding towns and people are forced to walk miles to access health care, ration, education, and markets. “The village has no health centre or sub-centre, exposing the population to life-threatening delays during medical emergencies. Pregnant women, elderly citizens, and children are particularly vulnerable,” the residents said. Notably, Dalri has only a Middle School and for higher education, students — especially girls — travel through dense forest areas, risking safety and discouraging further education. “This results in high dropout rates after Class 8th particularly among girl students,” the residents said. The village has also faced neglect as the government has failed to provide electricity supply while the drinking water facilities are minimal. “These issues drastically affect daily life, health, and education,” the locals said. The local residents also appealed to the district administration Kupwara for Macadamisation of Dalri-Ashpora road.

“Ashpora falls in District Kupwara, therefore the Kupwara administration has a role to play in it. The transportable road facility will help the population to ensure economic and overall development of the Dalri area,” the residents said. Talking to Greater Kashmir, Minister for Agriculture Production, Rural Development Panchayati Raj and Cooperative Election Javed Ahmad Dar who is also MLA Rafiabad, told Greater Kashmir that the issue about the road connectivity of Dalri village with nearby villages falling in Kupwara district was already under consideration. “Actually, Dalri village is connected with villages of Kupwara district from two sides. On one side it is connected with Ashpora and from another side it is connected with Rangpath village via Dogripora village,” he told Greater Kashmir. Javed Dar said the issue has been already discussed with concerned MLA Langate who is also pushing for better road connectivity of Qaziabad villages with Dalri. “The issue will be resolved very soon. The other demands of the residents of Dalri village will also be fulfilled,” he said.

Cherries from Kashmir make grand entry into Saudi Arabian market

Cherries from Kashmir make grand entry into Saudi Arabian market

Srinagar, Jun 17: In a landmark moment for Indian agri-exports, the first-ever commercial consignment of premium cherries from Jammu and Kashmir has arrived in Saudi Arabia, marking a breakthrough for fruit growers in the Himalayan region and signalling expanding global reach for India’s high-value horticultural produce.

The Embassy of India in Saudi Arabia confirmed the arrival of the consignment on Monday. The Embassy’s Commercial team, led by Counsellor (Commerce) Manusmriti, visited Lulu Supermarket in Riyadh to welcome and formally launch the premium cherries. The fruit is now available for Saudi consumers, offering them a taste of Kashmir’s celebrated produce.

“The first ever consignment of premium cherries from Jammu & Kashmir has arrived in the Kingdom & are available to be savored by all.

Embassy Commercial team led by Counsellor (Commerce) Ms Manusmriti visited the Lulu Supermarket and received the consignment and launched this unique product,” reads the tweet.

The development follows the announcement made by Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, who took to the social media platform X to share the milestone. “So much to CHEER! The first commercial consignment of premium cherries from Jammu and Kashmir heads to Saudi Arabia and the UAE. A huge market opens up for our cherry farmers, who will now get a better price for their produce,” Goyal wrote, celebrating the achievement as a major step in India’s agricultural export journey.

Goyal underscored that the export of cherries represents a broader effort by the government to bridge logistical challenges and make Indian fruits globally competitive. “What a win for #VocalForLocal,” he posted, highlighting the initiative’s alignment with the government’s focus on empowering local producers and making Indian produce a global brand.

The premium cherry consignment is part of an expanding export strategy aimed at tapping into high-value international markets for niche agricultural products. This is particularly significant for Jammu and Kashmir, where cherry cultivation is a crucial source of livelihood for hundreds of farming families. Until recently, limited shelf life and fragile transport conditions restricted cherries largely to domestic markets. However, recent advances in cold chain logistics and air freight coordination have now enabled India to position cherries as a viable export item.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India’s total exports of merchandise and services for the financial year 2024–25 are projected to reach USD 820.93 billion, a 5.50 percent increase over the previous fiscal. Within this, the fruits and vegetables segment has demonstrated robust growth, with exports rising from USD 3.66 billion in 2023–24 to USD 3.87 billion in 2024–25, registering a 5.67 percent growth.

Israel shows no intention to turn to mediators in resolving conflict with Iran: Kremlin aide

Israel shows no intention to turn to mediators in resolving conflict with Iran: Kremlin aide

Moscow, June 17: Israel is unwilling to look for mediation to switch its conflict with Iran on a peace track, a Russian Presidential aide said on Tuesday, amid escalating tensions between the two countries in West Asia.

“At the moment, we see an unwillingness on the part of Israel, at the very least, to engage in any kind of mediation or to enter the peace path at all. This is what we have observed,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a news briefing.

He was responding to a question about whether there was any reaction at all to the Russian president’s readiness to mediate in the settlement of the Iranian-Israeli conflict.

Moscow does not see Israel’s intention to turn to any mediators in resolving the conflict with Iran “and to enter the peace track in general,” Peskov added.

“You all know that the Russian side and, in particular, President Putin said that Russia was ready to provide such mediation services if necessary,” he said.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during his talks with his Indonesian counterpart Sugiono underscored that the world must spare no effort to de-escalate the conflict between Israel and Iran and seek a diplomatic resolution.

“We stated today that we have close or identical positions on the majority of current international problems, including the most urgent ones — I mean the situation in the Middle East, Palestinian territories, and, naturally, Israel’s attack on Iran and the need for the world community to spare no effort to calm the situation, to ease tensions and resolve all emerging issues at the negotiating table,” Lavrov during press encounter after talks with Sugiono.

Israel’s ‘Op Rising Lion’ against Iran has virtually split the Russian social media with many taking note of the mainly Jewish-dominated Russian electronic media that has taken an anti-Iran stance.

“I understand perfectly well those who these days publicly support their friends in Israel and do not express sympathy to their friends from Iran (for lack of such). Friendship is a feeling that does not require objectivity. But to show solidarity with the policy of the Israeli state and to supply their sympathies with cries of “Truth is on your side!” is already a political position, and a rather stupid and inhuman one at that,” a Russian Christian wrote on his Facebook wall which was widely shared and commented.

Flights to London, Paris cancelled; glitch hits San Francisco-Mumbai flight

0
Now, Air India cancels Delhi-Paris flight due to an ‘issue’

Mumbai/Kolkata, June 17: Troubles continued at Air India, which is facing the biggest crisis since Tata group bought the airline three and a half years back, with its flights to London and Paris on Tuesday being cancelled for varied reasons and a glitch forcing fliers on San Francisco-Mumbai flight to deplane during a stopover.

While Air India cancelled the Delhi-Paris flight after some problems were detected during pre-flight checks, its Ahmedabad-London one was cancelled due to unavailability of aircraft, the airline said.

Separately, Air India terminated its San Francisco-Mumbai flight at its scheduled stopover at Kolkata early on Tuesday morning after one of its engines developed a technical snag.

The disruptions came as investigators probe what caused a London-bound Air India flight to crash in Ahmedabad shortly after take-off on June 12, killing more than 270 people onboard and on the ground.

The incident dealt a severe blow to the airline and its owner Tata, which prides itself for producing luxury cars to salt and software as well as assembly of iPhone.

In a statement, Air India said flight AI143 from Delhi to Paris has been cancelled after “mandatory pre-flight checks identified an issue which is being presently addressed”.

It did not detail the issue that came to light during pre-flight checks.

“However, in view of the flight coming under the restrictions on night operations at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport, the said flight has been cancelled,” Air India said.

The airline said it is providing hotel accommodation and also offering full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling if opted by the passengers.

Air India also said it is making alternative arrangements to fly passengers to their destination at the earliest.

The airline, which on Monday resumed flights from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick with a new code AI159 instead of AI171 of the flight that crashed on June 12, had to cancel the flight on Tuesday due to unavailability of aircraft.

It denied claims that a technical snag led to the cancellation and maintained that it has made alternative arrangements for the affected passengers to their destination and offered full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling if opted by them.

Air India’s official website confirmed that the AI-159 flight from Ahmedabad to the Gatwick airport in London stands cancelled after being rescheduled. The plane was scheduled to depart at 3 pm from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA).

“Flight AI-159 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick (London) has been cancelled today (Tuesday) due to the unavailability of the aircraft, resulting from airspace restrictions and additional precautionary checks, leading to longer than usual turnaround of aircraft, and not due to any technical snag as claimed,” an AI spokesperson said.

“We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers and have made alternative arrangements to fly them to their destination. We are providing hotel accommodation and also offering full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling if opted by passengers,” he added.

Consequently, flight AI-170 from London (Gatwick) to Amritsar on June 17 stands cancelled, the airline said.

Iran has closed its airspace due to its ongoing war with Israel, affecting flights headed to Europe.

AI’s direct flight from Ahmedabad to London was earlier known by its assigned code ‘AI-171’.

Airport sources said the flight having code AI-171 was suspended after the horrific crash which claimed 270 lives, including 29 people on the ground.

It resumed operation on Monday (June 16), five days after the crash, with a new flight code AI-159, said an airport official.

Separately, an Air India flight from San Francisco to Mumbai via Kolkata suffered a technical snag early Tuesday, requiring passengers to deboard during a scheduled halt at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport.

The termination led to chaotic scenes at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport as the 211 passengers on the Boeing 777-200 LR tried to convince officials to let them reach their destination at the earliest.

The Tata Group-owned carrier did not issue an official statement.

Sources said Air India is making “special arrangements” to fly the stranded passengers to Mumbai. No further details were available.

Usually, the carrier flies directly to Mumbai from San Francisco but the ongoing geopolitical events, including the closure of Pakistani airspace, have led AI to reroute it and take a “technical halt” in Kolkata.

Flight AI-180 landed in Kolkata at the scheduled time of 12.45 am, even though it took off one hour late from San Francisco.

According to sources, a technical issue was detected during routine post-landing checks, and the airline decided to do a comprehensive check.

It was scheduled to depart for Mumbai at 2 am, but passengers came to know of the problems only after 2.40 am when the crew announced there was a problem with the left engine, according to a PTI reporter who was on the flight.

However, this announcement was accompanied by a specific promise, that the snag will take up to 25 minutes to get sorted, the reporter said.

However, as the clock ticked by, distraught passengers having connecting flights from Mumbai started enquiring about the progress of the work with the cabin crew, but there was no clear response, the reporter said.

With the Ahmedabad accident being fresh, some passengers also said a delay is better than a mishap, while some wondered how an aircraft which had travelled thousands of kilometres could face problems in the last leg from Kolkata to Mumbai.

The next announcement came at 4.20 am when the pilots sought another 15-20 minutes for rectification of the problem.

The engineers could be seen working on the left engine even as a drizzle continued, but the problem persisted. Finally, around 5.20 am, the pilots announced that a resolution was not possible and asked all passengers to deplane.

After disembarking and passing the mandatory immigration, collecting baggage and passing the customs channels, the passengers were asked to sit in a designated area.

A few passengers pleaded with officials asking for the earliest option to travel to Mumbai. Some got lucky, while others continued to wait.

Finally, an Air India official announced that Mumbai-bound flights were mostly full and convinced a bulk of the passengers to check into a hotel.
