Sindoor turned into barood: PM Modi on Operation Sindoor

New Delhi, June 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today departed for a three-nation tour to Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia, marking a significant diplomatic outreach aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and voicing the concerns of the Global South on the world stage. In a statement issued ahead of his departure, Prime Minister Modi said, “Today, I will embark on a three-nation tour to the Republic of Cyprus, Canada and Croatia.”

The first stop of the tour is Cyprus, where PM Modi will be on an official visit on June 15–16. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Mediterranean island nation in 23 years. Describing Cyprus as a “close friend and an important partner in the Mediterranean region and the EU,” the Prime Minister said the visit would offer an opportunity to “build upon the historical bonds and expand our ties in the areas of trade, investment, security, technology and promote people-to-people exchanges.”

Following his engagements in Cyprus, PM Modi will travel to Kananaskis, Canada, to attend the G7 Summit at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. India is participating as a partner country in the summit. “The Summit will provide space for exchange of views on pressing global issues and the priorities of the Global South,” PM Modi said, adding, “I also look forward to engaging with leaders from partner countries.”

In the final leg of the visit, the Prime Minister will travel to Croatia on June 18 for what will be the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Eastern European nation. During his stay, PM Modi is scheduled to meet with Croatian President Zoran Milanović and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. “Both our countries enjoy centuries-old close cultural links,” he said. “As the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia, it will open new avenues for bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest.”

Framing the larger purpose of the visit, PM Modi added, “This three-nation tour is also an opportunity to thank partner countries for their steadfast support to India in our fight against cross-border terrorism, and to galvanize global understanding on tackling terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”

Trump says he, Putin agree 'war between Israel-Iran should end'

Washington, June 15: US President Donald Trump has said that he had a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over the tensions in the Middle East and Russia-Ukraine peace talks, and both of them agreed that “this war in Israel-Iran should end”.

“He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end,” Trump wrote on Saturday on his social media platform Truth Social, adding that Putin knows Iran “very well”.

Trump said he also explained to the Russian President that the Russia-Ukraine war “should also end” during the one-hour call, Xinhua news agency reported.

“We talked at length. Much less time was spent talking about Russia/Ukraine, but that will be for next week,” the US President said.

“He (Putin) is doing the planned prisoner swaps — large numbers of prisoners are being exchanged, immediately, from both sides.”

Saturday was Trump’s 79th birthday.

Trump said that Putin wished him a happy birthday during the phone call.

Putin and his US counterpart Trump had discussed the situation in the Middle East in a phone conversation, the Kremlin said on Saturday.

“The conversation lasted for 50 minutes, it was substantive, sincere and very useful,” Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said.

“Naturally, it was focused on the dangerous exacerbation of the situation in the Middle East.”

Putin denounced the Israeli military operation against Iran and expressed grave concern over the possible escalation of the conflict, which would have unpredictable consequences for the entire Middle East region, he said in a statement.

“Putin emphasised the importance of preventing the conflict from escalating and the readiness of the Russian side to engage in possible mediation efforts,” he said.

Trump also views the situation as very alarming, he said, adding that the Russian and US Presidents do not rule out a return to the negotiating track on Iran’s nuclear programme.

Trump noted that the team of US negotiators is ready to resume work with Iranian representatives, according to Ushakov.

Putin also informed Trump about the execution of the agreements reached by the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul on June 2 and expressed readiness to continue talks with the Ukrainian side after June 22, he said.

Trump took note of this information and reiterated his interest in bringing the Russian-Ukrainian war to a speedy conclusion, he added.

Israel targets Iran’s Defence Ministry headquarters as Tehran unleashes deadly missile strike

Israel targets Iran's Defence Ministry headquarters as Tehran unleashes deadly missile strike

Dubai, June 15: Israel launched an expanded assault on Iran on Sunday, with direct strikes targeting its energy industry and Defence Ministry headquarters, while Tehran unleashed a fresh barrage of missiles blamed for the deaths of four people.

The simultaneous strikes represented the latest salvo since a surprise attack by Israel two days earlier aimed at decimating Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear programme.

New explosions boomed across Tehran as Iranian missiles entered Israel’s skies in an attack that Israeli emergency officials said killed four people in an apartment building in the Galilee region.

Casualty figures weren’t immediately available in Iran, where Israel targeted its Defence Ministry headquarters in Tehran as well as sites that it alleged were associated with the country’s nuclear programme. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard claimed that Iranian missiles targeted fuel production facilities for Israeli fighter jets, something not acknowledged by Israel.

Amid the continued conflict, planned negotiations between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear programme were cancelled, throwing into question when and how an end to the fighting could come.

“Tehran is burning,” Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on social media.

Both Israel’s military and Iran state television announced the latest round of Iranian missiles as explosions were heard near midnight, while the Israeli security cabinet met.

Israel’s ongoing strikes across Iran have left the country’s surviving leadership with the difficult decision of whether to plunge deeper into conflict with Israel’s more powerful forces or seek a diplomatic route.

Urgent calls to deescalate

World leaders made urgent calls to deescalate and avoid all-out war. The attack on nuclear sites set a “dangerous precedent,” China’s foreign minister said. The region is already on edge as Israel makes a new push to eliminate the Iranian-backed militant group Hamas in Gaza after 20 months of fighting.

Israel — widely believed to be the only nuclear-armed state in the Middle East — said its hundreds of strikes on Iran over the past two days have killed a number of top generals, nine senior scientists and experts involved in Iran’s nuclear programme. Iran’s UN ambassador has said 78 people were killed and more than 320 wounded.

US intelligence agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency have repeatedly said Iran was not pursuing a nuclear weapon before Israel unleashed its campaign of airstrikes targeting Iran beginning Friday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has made the destruction of Iran’s nuclear programme his top priority, said Israel’s strikes so far are “nothing compared to what they will feel under the sway of our forces in the coming days.”

In what could be another escalation if confirmed, semiofficial Iranian news agencies reported an Israeli drone struck and caused a “strong explosion” at an Iranian natural-gas processing plant. It would be the first Israeli attack on Iran’s oil and natural gas industry. Israel’s military did not immediately comment.

The extent of damage at the South Pars natural gas field was not immediately clear. Such sites have air defence systems around them, which Israel has been targeting.

Iran calls nuclear talks unjustifiable

The sixth round of US-Iran indirect talks on Sunday over Iran’s nuclear programme will not take place, mediator Oman said. “We remain committed to talks and hope the Iranians will come to the table soon,” said a senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss diplomacy.

Iran says its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes only, and US intelligence agencies have assessed that Tehran was not actively pursuing the bomb. But its uranium enrichment has reached near weapons-grade levels, and on Thursday, the U.N.’s atomic watchdog censured Iran for not complying with obligations meant to prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon.

Iran’s top diplomat said Saturday the nuclear talks were “unjustifiable” after Israel’s strikes. Abbas Araghchi’s comments came during a call with Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s top diplomat.

The Israeli airstrikes were the “result of the direct support by Washington,” Araghchi said in a statement carried by the state-run IRNA news agency. The U.S. has said it isn’t part of the strikes.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump urged Iran to reach a deal with the US on its nuclear programme, adding that “Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left.”

US helps to shoot down Iranian missiles

Iran launched its first waves of missiles at Israel late Friday and early Saturday. The attacks killed at least three people and wounded 174, two of them seriously, Israel said. The military said seven soldiers were lightly wounded when a missile hit central Israel, without specifying where.

US ground-based air defence systems in the region were helping to shoot down Iranian missiles, said a US official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the measures.

Israel’s main international airport said it will remain closed until further notice.

More than a few weeks to repair nuclear facilities

Israel attacked Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz. Satellite photos analyzed by AP show extensive damage there. The images shot Saturday by Planet Labs PBC show multiple buildings damaged or destroyed. The structures hit include buildings identified by experts as supplying power to the facility.

UN nuclear chief Rafael Grossi told the Security Council that the above-ground section of the Natanz facility was destroyed. The main centrifuge facility underground did not appear to have been hit, but the loss of power could have damaged infrastructure there, he said.

Israel said it also struck a nuclear research facility in Isfahan, including “infrastructure for enriched uranium conversion,” and said it destroyed dozens of radar installations and surface-to-air missile launchers in western Iran. Iran confirmed the strike at Isfahan.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said four “critical buildings” at the Isfahan site were damaged, including its uranium conversion facility. “As in Natanz, no increase in off-site radiation expected,” it added.

An Israeli military official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with official procedures, said that according to the army’s initial assessment “it will take much more than a few weeks” for Iran to repair the damage to the Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites. The official said the army had “concrete intelligence that production in Isfahan was for military purposes.”

Israel denied it had struck the nuclear enrichment facility in Fordo, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Tehran.

Among those killed were three of Iran’s top military leaders: one who oversaw the entire armed forces, Gen. Mohammad Bagheri; one who led the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Hossein Salami; and the head of the Guard’s aerospace division, which oversees its arsenal of ballistic missile programme, Gen Amir Ali Hajizadeh. On Saturday, Khamenei named a new leader for the Revolutionary Guard’s aerospace division: Gen Majid Mousavi.

Not discarding possibility of PM Modi brokering peace with Iran: Israeli Ambassador

Not discarding possibility of PM Modi brokering peace with Iran: Israeli Ambassador

New Delhi, June 15: Calling India a “good friend” of Israel which also has “a good dialogue with the Iranians”, Israel’s Ambassador to India Reuven Azar on Saturday did not rule out the possibility of Prime Minister Narendra Modi brokering peace between Tehran and Jerusalem in order to bring an end to the conflict in the volatile region.

“We respect Prime Minister Modi. I think he is a great leader. He has proved to be very effective for the prosperity of the Indian nation, and we do not discard that possibility,” said Azar in an exclusive interview with IANS while replying to a question on the possibility of PM Modi acting as a mediator in Israel-Iran peace talks.

On Friday, hours after launching ‘Operation Rising Lion’ – a targetted military operation “to roll back the Iranian threat of nuclear weapons to Israel’s very survival” – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dialled top world leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to update them about Israel’s strikes on Iran.

As Netanyahu briefed him on the evolving situation, PM Modi shared India’s concerns and emphasised the need for an early restoration of peace and stability in the region.

“India is a very good friend of Israel. We have had the discussions at the highest level yesterday. Our Prime Minister spoke with Prime Minister Modi. The national security advisors spoke with each other, and our foreign ministers also had a conversation. We know that India also has a good dialogue with the Iranians,” said Azar.

The Israeli diplomat emphasised that the international community should do more to punish terrorists and to also punish and isolate those who sponsor terrorism, including all the states that sponsor and harbour terrorism.

“The challenge here is how to get this fanatic regime in Iran to act peacefully. The people of Iran are urging a situation in which their future will not be sequestered by this regime that has invested tens, if not hundreds and billions of dollars in this arms race, quest to have hegemony in our region and to develop weapons of mass destruction. This has to change, and I hope India can help us with that,” he added.

India on Friday also said that it remains “deeply concerned” at the recent developments between Iran and Israel and is “closely monitoring” the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites.

“India urges both sides to avoid any escalatory steps. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards a de-escalation of the situation and resolving underlying issues. India enjoys close and friendly relations with both the countries and stands ready to extend all possible support. Our Missions in both countries are in contact with the Indian community. All Indian nationals in the region are advised to exercise caution, stay safe and follow local security advisories,” mentioned a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Israel warns ‘Tehran will burn’ as Iran fires missiles in response to deadly strikes

Israel warns 'Tehran will burn' as Iran fires missiles in response to deadly strikes

Dubai, June 14: Israel’s defence minister warned Saturday that “Tehran will burn” if Iran continues firing missiles, as the countries traded blows a day after Israel launched a blistering surprise attack on Iranian nuclear and military sites, killing several top generals.

The attacks have left Iran’s surviving leadership with the difficult decision of plunging deeper into conflict with Israel’s more powerful forces or seeking a diplomatic route.

The ongoing Israeli strikes appear to have halted — for now — any diplomacy between the US and Iran over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear programme.

Israel and Iran signalled more attacks are coming despite urgent calls from world leaders to deescalate to avoid all-out war.

The region is already on edge as Israel makes a new push to eliminate the Iranian-backed militant group Hamas in Gaza after 20 months of fighting.

Israel — which is widely believed to have a nuclear weapons programme — said its hundreds of strikes on Iran over the past two days also killed nine senior scientists and experts involved in Iran’s nuclear programme.

Iran’s UN ambassador said 78 people were killed and more than 320 wounded.

Iran retaliated by launching waves of drones and ballistic missiles at Israel, where explosions lit the night skies over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and shook buildings. The Israeli military urged civilians, already rattled by the war in Gaza sparked by Hamas’ October 7 attack, to head to shelter for hours. Health officials said three people were killed and dozens wounded.

Defence Minister Israel Katz said Iran will pay a heavy price for harming Israeli citizens. “If (Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei continues to fire missiles at the Israeli home front — Tehran will burn,” Katz said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that his objective was to eliminate any Iranian threat to Israel, but he also urged Iranians to rise up against their leaders.

Strikes could derail nuclear talks

The US and Iran were scheduled to be in Oman on Sunday for their sixth round of indirect talks over Iran’s nuclear programme. Iran’s top diplomat said Saturday the talks were “unjustifiable” after the Israeli strikes, likely signalling no negotiations this weekend. But he stopped short of saying the talks were cancelled.

The comments by Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s minister of foreign affairs, came during a call with Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s top diplomat.

The Israeli airstrikes were the “result of the direct support by Washington,” Araghchi said in a statement carried by the state-run IRNA news agency. The US has said it isn’t part of the strikes.

There was no immediate word from the White House after Araghchi’s comments. On Friday, US President Donald Trump urged Iran to reach a deal with the US on its nuclear programme. He warned on social media that Israel’s attacks “will only get worse,” adding that “Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left.”

Iranian missiles strike Israel

Khamenei signalled in a recorded message Friday that Iran was prepared to keep up its retaliatory attacks on Israel: “We will not allow them to escape safely from this great crime they committed.”

Iran launched waves of missiles at Israel late Friday and early Saturday, and Iranians awoke to state television airing repeated clips of strikes on Israel, as well as videos of people cheering and handing out sweets.

The Iranian attacks killed at least three people and wounded 76, mostly in and around Tel Aviv, according to two local hospitals. One missile severely damaged at least four homes in the nearby city of Rishon Lezion, according to first responders.

The Israeli military said seven soldiers were lightly wounded when a missile hit central Israel, without specifying where. It was the first report of Israeli military casualties since the initial Israeli strikes.

US ground-based air defence systems in the region were helping to shoot down Iranian missiles, said a US official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the measures.

In Ramat Gan, east of Tel Aviv, an Associated Press journalist saw burned-out cars and at least three damaged houses, including one whose front was nearly entirely torn away.

Residents of a central Israeli city that was hit Friday night told the AP the explosion was so powerful it shook their shelter door open. “We thought, that’s it, the house is gone, and in fact half of the house was gone,” said Moshe Shani.

Israeli police said debris from the interception of drones and missiles fell in dozens of locations in northern Israel, causing damage and fires but no injuries.

Israel’s main international airport said Saturday it will remain closed until further notice.

Indications of a new Israeli attack

Iranian state television reported online that air defenses were firing in the cities of Khorramabad, Kermanshah and Tabriz. Footage from Tabriz showed black smoke rising from the city.

An Israeli military official said Saturday that the military was poised to carry out more strikes in Iran, saying, “This is not over.” He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with official procedures.

Israel’s army spokesman, Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, said Israel had attacked more than 400 targets across Iran, including 40 in Tehran, where dozens of fighter jets were “operating freely.” He said it was the deepest point Israel’s air force had operated.

Defrin said fighter jets struck over 40 “missile-related targets and advanced air defence array systems” across Iran.

Overnight, the sound of explosions and Iranian air defence systems firing at targets echoed across central Tehran. Iran’s semiofficial Tasnim news agency reported a fire at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport.

Countries in the region condemned Israel’s attack, while leaders around the globe called for immediate deescalation from both sides.

More than a few weeks’ to repair nuclear facilities

Among the key sites Israel attacked was Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz. Satellite photos analysed by AP show extensive damage there.

The main centrifuge facility underground did not appear to have been hit, but the loss of power could have damaged the infrastructure there, he said.

Israel said it also struck a nuclear research facility in Isfahan, including “infrastructure for enriched uranium conversion,” and said it destroyed dozens of radar installations and surface-to-air missile launchers in western Iran. Iran confirmed the strike at Isfahan.

The Israeli military official said that according to the army’s initial assessment “it will take much more than a few weeks” for Iran to repair the damage to the Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites. The official said the army had “concrete intelligence that production in Isfahan was for military purposes.”

Israel denied it had struck the nuclear enrichment facility in Fordo, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) southeast of Tehran, after an Iranian news outlet close to the government reported the sound of explosions nearby,

Netanyahu said the attack had been months in the making and was planned for April before being postponed.

Among those killed were three of Iran’s top military leaders: one who oversaw the entire armed forces, Gen. Mohammad Bagheri; one who led the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Hossein Salami; and the head of the Guard’s aerospace division, which oversees its arsenal of ballistic missile program, Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh.

Two of Bagheri’s deputies were also killed, Iran confirmed Saturday. On Saturday, Khamenei named a new leader for the Revolutionary Guard’s aerospace division: Gen. Majid Mousavi.

MC Baramulla sets up 5 parking facilities to ease traffic congestion

Baramulla, Jun 14: In an effort to address urban traffic congestion and streamline vehicular movement, Municipal Council (MC) Baramulla has developed and macadamised five dedicated parking areas across the town during the year 2024ñ25.

These facilities have been set up at Parking near Noor-ul-Huda Market, parking facility in front of Government Womenís College, parking in front of Town Square Shopping Complex, parking near Irrigation and Flood Control Department and Dedicated Space for Sumos at Azad Gunj, with a combined capacity to accommodate around 650 vehicles, mark a crucial step towards enhancing urban mobility and providing structured parking solutions for both residents and visitors.

These parking areas open to the public use, have been developed at strategic locations in the town to ease the mounting pressure on existing roads and reduce the practice of haphazard roadside parking.

Moreover, to further address the parking issue, authorities are actively exploring a multi-level car parking project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. This project is envisioned to accommodate at least 1,500 vehicles in a vertical format, optimizing land use and significantly transforming urban mobility. In parallel, MC authorities are also in the process of identifying land for another ground-level parking facility near Main Chowk, one of the townís busiest junctions, to ensure smoother movement and ease of access.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, highlighted the development as a well-planned and timely intervention to deal with the townís increasing traffic challenges and noted that the establishment of these dedicated parking zones will go a long way in relieving congestion.

Chief Executive Officer, Municipal Council Baramulla, Naveed Aijaz Khan, underscored the long-term benefits of the project, pointing out that the newly created parking spaces cater to the growing volume of vehicles in the town while also improving pedestrian safety and overall traffic management.

Meanwhile, administration has appealed to the public to make effective use of these spaces and cooperate in the broader mission of creating a clean, organized and commuter-friendly Baramulla.
