INDIA Bloc to hold strategic meeting today ahead of Monsoon Session of Parliament

New Delhi, July 19: Opposition’s INDIA Bloc will hold a crucial virtual meeting on Saturday to formulate a unified strategy ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

The Congress party, which is leading the coordination for the meeting, has decided to shift the event from an in-person gathering at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi to a virtual format. This change has been made to ensure broader participation from Opposition leaders across the country.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 P.M. and will bring together senior leaders from key Opposition parties, including the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Shiv Sena (UBT), Samajwadi Party (SP), Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), and the Left parties.

Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee is also expected to attend the session. However, there remains uncertainty regarding the participation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Congress MP and General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal confirmed the meeting details, stating that the top leadership of the INDIA Bloc will deliberate on key issues that will be raised during the upcoming Parliament session.

Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain added that the meeting would serve as a strategic platform for leaders to align on their approach to counter the government’s agenda and highlight concerns related to democracy, governance, and electoral integrity.

One of the major concerns expected to dominate the discussion is the voter list revision in Bihar. The Opposition has strongly criticised the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls conducted by the Election Commission ahead of the state’s upcoming Assembly elections.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh recently reignited the debate by accusing the Centre of attempting to manipulate the electoral process.

Referring to the SIR exercise in Bihar, Ramesh posted on X, “The Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls is a deliberate and diabolical move to rig the elections through large-scale disenfranchisement. A PM who masterminded ‘notebandi’ has orchestrated this ‘votebandi’”.

With the Monsoon Session set to begin soon, the meeting aims to set the tone for the Opposition’s parliamentary performance.

Five jets shot down during India-Pakistan conflict, claims Trump

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

New York July 19: In a fresh claim, US President Donald Trump said “five jets were shot down” during the conflict between India and Pakistan in May and repeated his assertion that the fighting ended following his intervention.

The US president did not specify whether the jets were lost by either of the two countries or whether he was referring to combined losses by both sides.

In virtually rejecting Trump’s claim of ending the conflict, New Delhi has been maintaining that the two sides halted their military actions following direct talks between their militaries without any mediation by the US.

Speaking at the White House during a dinner he hosted for Republican senators on Friday, Trump said: “You had India, Pakistan, that was going… in fact, planes were being shot out of the air…four or five. But I think five jets were shot down actually…that was getting worse and worse, wasn’t it?

“That was looking like it was going to go, these are two serious nuclear countries, and they were hitting each other,” he said.

“But India and Pakistan were going at it, and they were back and forth, and it was getting bigger and bigger. And we got it solved through trade. We said ‘You guys want to make a trade deal. We’re not making a trade deal if you’re going to be throwing around weapons and maybe nuclear weapons. Both very powerful nuclear states,” Trump said.

He said his administration achieved more in six months than almost any other administration could accomplish in eight years.

“Something I’m very proud of, we stopped a lot of wars, a lot of wars. And these were serious wars,” Trump said.

Since May 10, Trump has repeated his claim several times on various occasions that he “helped settle” the tensions between India and Pakistan and that he told the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours that America will do a “lot of trade” with them if they stopped the conflict.

India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure in territories controlled by Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a front for Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), had claimed responsibility.

The strikes triggered four days of intense clashes that ended with an understanding on stopping the military actions on May 10.

The US on Thursday designated The Resistance Front as a foreign terrorist organisation. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that the Department of State is adding The Resistance Front (TRF) as a designated Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT).

India welcomed the US decision to designate TRF as a designated FTO and SDGT.

Fresh batch of over 6,000 pilgrims embark on Amarnath Yatra from Jammu

Jammu, July 19: A fresh batch of 6,365 pilgrims, including 1,499 women and 441 children, left the Bhagwati Nagar base camp here on Saturday to join the ongoing annual Amarnath Yatra in the south Kashmir Himalayas, officials said.

The pilgrims, which included 135 sadhus and sadhvis, left for the twin base camps of Nunwan-Pahalgam in Anantnag and Baltal in Ganderbal in separate convoys under tight security arrangements in the early hours of the day, they said.

While 3,514 pilgrims left for Pahalgam in a convoy of 119 vehicles, 2,851 pilgrims travelling in 92 vehicles preferred the Baltal route, officials said.

The 38-day annual pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre high cave shrine started from the two routes on July 3 and is scheduled to end on August 9, coinciding with the Raksha Bandhan festival.

Over 2.75 lakh pilgrims have so far paid their obeisance at the shrine, which houses a naturally formed Shivlingam.

UN humanitarians warn mass deprivation being normalised in Gaza

At least 34 people killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza as ceasefire prospects inch closer

United Nations, July 19: The daily onslaught of hostilities, preventable deaths, a worsening fuel shortage, displacement and desperation are normalising mass deprivation for Gazans, UN humanitarians said.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the Israeli authorities issued yet another displacement order, this time for parts of northern Gaza. There are also deeply troubling reports of malnourished children and adults in hospitals with few resources to treat them, Xinhua news agency reported.

OCHA said that the energy crisis continues to deepen despite the resumption of limited fuel imports, and its depletion has forced a pause in solid waste collection over the past couple of days, and more water wells have been shut down, mainly in Deir al-Balah.

Specific health services like dialysis have been reduced or shut down, and others will have to end too, due to fuel shortages, while the limited fuel available is being allocated primarily to health, water and telecommunications services, as well as to powering vehicles, it said.

Humanitarian movements inside Gaza continue to be restricted, since only seven out of 13 attempts to coordinate aid workers and supplies movement with the Israeli authorities were facilitated, allowing humanitarian teams to retrieve fuel, collect water, relocate generators, provide supplies related to hygiene and sanitation, and transfer much-needed medical supplies, OCHA said.

Trump sues Wall Street Journal over Epstein letter report

12 US states sue Trump administration over 'illegal tariffs'

New Delhi, July 19: U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a $20 billion libel lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal, its parent company Dow Jones, and two of its reporters over a story involving a collection of letters reportedly gifted to Jeffrey Epstein in 2003, one of which allegedly included Trump’s name and some pictures, reports CNN.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Miami, marks an escalation in Trump’s broader legal campaign against media outlets he accuses of spreading misinformation.

Trump’s legal team has challenged the authenticity of the alleged letter and drawing, accused the Journal of journalistic misconduct and failed to verify the existence of key materials mentioned in the article.

The Journal had published the piece last week, naming Trump in connection with Epstein, the late financier and convicted sex offender. Trump swiftly threatened legal action after the story was published and has now named the two Journal reporters involved as co-defendants. Dow Jones has defended the story, stating confidence in its accuracy and promising a robust legal defence.

The lawsuit comes amid renewed public interest in Epstein’s network and ties to powerful figures. Trump has previously pledged to release more information about Epstein, though a recent Justice Department memo claimed no conclusive evidence of a “client list” linked to Epstein’s alleged crimes, reports CNN.

Trump’s legal battle with the Journal adds to a growing list of lawsuits he has launched against media and tech companies. In recent months, he has reached settlements with several outlets, including ABC and CBS. The lawsuit also reflects Trump’s ongoing tension with Rupert Murdoch, whose media empire encompasses both The Wall Street Journal and Fox News. Despite sharing similar political interests, their relationship has fluctuated over the years.
