Iran, Israel should make deal just like I got India, Pak to make one: Trump

0
Trump’s reciprocal tariffs take effect undeterred by negotiations

New York/Washington, June 15: US President Donald Trump on Sunday claimed that he could secure a deal between Iran and Israel just as he had done between other arch-rivals, as he repeated his claim that he stopped the war between India and Pakistan last month by “using trade”.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump also claimed that “many calls and meetings are now taking place” on the issue.

“Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal, just like I got India and Pakistan to make, in that case by using TRADE with the United States to bring reason, cohesion, and sanity into the talks with two excellent leaders who were able to quickly make a decision and STOP!” Trump claimed.

The Indian government has maintained that India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes without any third-party involvement.

Israel attacked Iran early Friday targeting its nuclear, missile, and military infrastructure. Iran launched retaliatory strikes on Israel, which has threatened even greater force after some Iranian missiles struck buildings in Tel Aviv.

In his post, Trump listed other conflicts where he claimed he had intervened and stopped the fighting.

He said that during his first term, Serbia and Kosovo were going at it “hot and heavy”, as they have for many decades, and this long-time conflict was ready to break out into “WAR”.

“I stopped it (Biden has hurt the longer term prospects with some very stupid decisions, but I will fix it, again!). Another case is Egypt and Ethiopia, and their fight over a massive dam that is having an effect on the magnificent Nile River. There is peace, at least for now, because of my intervention, and it will stay that way!”

He said, “Likewise, we will have PEACE, soon, between Israel and Iran! Many calls and meetings now taking place. I do a lot, and never get credit for anything, but that’s OK, the PEOPLE understand. MAKE THE MIDDLE EAST GREAT AGAIN!”

About two weeks after the horrific April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir in which 26 civilians were killed, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.

Indian government sources in New Delhi have maintained that the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan reached an understanding to stop all firings and military actions on land, air and sea with immediate effect. They said no third party was involved.

On May 10, Trump claimed on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after a “long night” of talks mediated by Washington.

He has repeated the claim over a dozen times that he “helped settle” the tensions between India and Pakistan. Trump said that he told the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours that America will do a “lot of trade” with them if they stopped the conflict.

DNA tests identify 47 victims including ex-CM Rupani; 24 bodies handed over to kin

Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu assures "fair and thorough" investigation into Ahmedabad plane crash

Ahmedabad, June 15: Three days after the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, which has so far claimed 270 lives, hospital authorities confirmed on Sunday the identification of 47 victims through DNA matching, including that of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

Authorities have handed over 24 bodies to the victims’ families, officials said on Sunday.

Rupani was among the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound Air India flight AI-171 that crashed on Thursday.

The Gujarat government has announced a state mourning for Rupani on Monday. A funeral procession will be held in Rajkot in the evening.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a medical college complex moments after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 PM on Thursday. So far 29 people are reported to have died in the disaster on the ground which includes five MBBS students. Only one person from the aircraft miraculously survived.

Due to the severe condition of many bodies—burnt or disfigured—authorities are relying on DNA matching for identification.

“A total of 47 plane crash victims have been identified so far through DNA matching. Of these, the bodies of 24 victims have been handed over to their respective families. These deceased were from Rajasthan and different parts of Gujarat,” Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajnish Patel told reporters.

He added that 14 of the identified victims were from Udaipur, Vadodara, Kheda, Mehsana, Ahmedabad, and Botad districts.

Of the 51 people injured in the incident, 38 have been discharged, while 13 are still undergoing treatment, said Dr. Patel, a professor of surgery at the government-run B J Medical College.

According to Dr. Dhaval Gameti, president of the BJ Medical College Junior Doctors’ Association, around 270 bodies were brought to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital from the crash site.

State Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey told reporters that families of all 230 passengers who perished on the flight have been contacted.

“Members of only three deceased passengers are yet to give their DNA samples as they live abroad. They are expected to arrive tomorrow evening. Along with the mortal remains, we are also handing over death certificates to the kin so that they don’t face any issues afterwards,” said Pandey.

To assess the situation, P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visited the crash site and Civil Hospital on Sunday. He was briefed on the sequence of events and interacted with the injured.

State government officials apprised Mishra about the sequence of events leading to the disaster, which is the country’s worst aviation accident in decades.

After enquiring about the health of the injured, Mishra proceeded to the hospital’s morgue area.

“I am very pained by the enormity of the tragedy. Everybody is sad. It is our duty to share grief and express our feelings for the victims,” Mishra told reporters.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading a thorough probe into the causes of the crash. Various Central and state government agencies, including the state police, are assisting the AAIB team at the crash site in Meghaninagar.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Commissioner Banchha Nidhi Pani highlighted the crucial recovery of the black box, an essential component of the investigation.

“The black box recovery was a very important part of the investigation process…The AMC immediately acted and the black box was also recovered,” Pani said, noting its location in the tail end of the aircraft, which was embedded in a building.

City Police Commissioner G.S. Malik also visited the accident site on Sunday morning.

Ahmedabad fire brigade officials said three delegations visited the crash site on Sunday including some foreigners to assist investigators.

Sources said the first meeting of a high-level multi-disciplinary committee formed by the Centre will be held on Monday in New Delhi.

The committee, headed by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, is mandated to ascertain the “root cause” of the plane crash and assess any contributing factors, including mechanical failure, human error,

and regulatory compliances. The committee has been mandated to submit its report within three months.

As part of the ongoing efforts, 230 teams have been formed to coordinate with the victims’ families.

Meanwhile, Air India on Sunday said it is working closely with other Tata group companies to provide every possible assistance to the families and loved ones of the plane crash victims.

The airline in a statement also said that over 400 family members have reached Ahmedabad and are being assisted by its teams on the ground.

‘Harming Indians will invite punishment’, HM Shah on Op Sindoor

‘Harming Indians will invite punishment’, HM Shah on Op Sindoor

Lucknow, June 15: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that through the anti-terror Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a strong message across the world that the bloodshed of Indians will invite punishment.

Speaking after handing over appointment letters to 60,244 Uttar Pradesh Police constables, including 12,048 women, HM Shah said, “I congratulate our armed forces for precision strikes that demolished the terror hubs.”

He also compared PM Modi’s strong response to terror strikes with the Congress era, which witnessed frequent attacks but no response.

Hailing the current era of ‘Sashakt Bharat’, HM Shah highlighted the strides made by the nation in reducing poverty, space technology, education, aviation, opportunities for the youth, computer-based skilling and urban mobility through Metro networks.

HM Shah said that under PM Modi, even internal security in the country has improved. “Earlier, 11 districts were affected by Maoism, but today Left Wing Extremism is present only in three districts,” he said.

“Mark my words, Maoism will be eradicated from the country by March 21, 2026,” he said.

Highlighting the economy’s growth under PM Modi, HM Shah said, “By 2027, the country will become the third largest economy. When PM Modi took charge, our economy was the 11 largest.”

HM Shah also highlighted PM Modi’s vision for impartial social upliftment and said in the last 11 years, 25 crore people have emerged from poverty, crores of people have got cooking gas cylinders, free ration, free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh, and farmers have started getting Rs 6,000 every year.

Targeting the previous Samajwadi Party-led government in the state, the Home Minister said that before 2017, the law and order situation in UP was deteriorating steadily, but under the BJP government led by Yogi Adityanath, the state police has returned to the track of improvement and revival.

Today, under CM Adityanath, goons don’t call the shots and criminals don’t enjoy any VIP treatment, he said, referring to the alleged lawlessness in the state under the previous Samajwadi Party government.

Pointing to the hurdles created by the SP government in police reforms, he said, “During the first three years of PM Modi’s government, the state police did not benefit from efforts for improvement.”

HM Shah also hit out at the SP government for corruption in recruitment, saying the current hiring of 60,244 constables in UP Police has been done without any ‘Kharchi-Parchi’ and only on the basis of merit.

“Earlier, recruitments used to take place on a caste basis, but not anymore. The current hiring has been done transparently,” he said, expressing satisfaction over the appointment of 12,048 women as constables.

Two minor siblings feared drowned in Chenab river in J&K's Doda

Jammu, June 15: Two minor siblings are feared drowned after they slipped into the swollen Chenab river in Doda district, officials said on Sunday, as a major rescue operation is underway to retrieve their bodies.

The boys, hailing from Nepli village, were playing cricket near the river bank when the ball fell in the river on Saturday evening, the officials said, quoting eye-witnesses.

Abrar Ahmad (12) was the first to fall into the river while trying to retrieve the ball and his younger brother Asrar Ahmad (10) was also swept away when he tried to rescue him, the officials said.

A major rescue operation was launched by locals, police and SDRF but there was no trace of the boys, the officials said, adding the rescue operation continued till late in the night and was resumed around 6 am on Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner, Doda Harvinder Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police, Doda Sandeep Mehta also visited the scene to supervise the rescue operation.

“The boys remained untraced so far but efforts are on to trace them. The water level in Chenab is very high but the SDRF and police are continuing their efforts,” Singh said.

He requested parents not to leave their children unattended near the water bodies to avoid any untoward incident.

NIA opposes relaxation of bail conditions for PDP leader Waheed Para

0
'Not a law-abiding citizen': NIA opposes relaxation of bail conditions for PDP leader Waheed Para

Jammu, Jun 15: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has opposed relaxation of bail conditions for PDP leader and MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, saying “he is not a law-abiding citizen” and charges have been framed against him in offences related to “national security”.

In a four-page reply to an application moved by Para seeking relaxation of bail conditions to allow him to move outside Jammu and Kashmir, the NIA gave a detailed account of his case and said the plea needs to be dismissed as the accused may flee from the clutches of law.

Para was granted bail by an NIA court but was directed not to leave the Union Territory without seeking permission from the court.

The PDP MLA, whom the NIA first arrested on November 25, 2020, got bail on January 9, 2021.

However, he was not released from jail in Jammu and was arrested by the Criminal Investigation (Kashmir) wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police, which has now been converted to State Investigation Agency (SIA).

He was later released on bail by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 2022.

The PDP legislator recently moved the special NIA court here, seeking exemption of court permission to travel outside Jammu and Kashmir, but within the country, for his constitutional duties.

However, the NIA said that present bail conditions in no way prevent the accused from performing his duties as an MLA.

The NIA said, “The accused, Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, is not a law-abiding citizen and stands implicated in serious offences affecting national security.

“Any application seeking blanket permission to travel outside the Union Territory of J&K should be viewed as a calculated attempt to evade justice during a critical stage of the trial.”

The agency reasoned that any relaxation in bail conditions will raise serious concerns regarding Para’s intent to avoid legal proceedings and circumvent the ongoing trial.

“Granting the requested relief may create a substantial risk of the accused absconding and thereby frustrating the due process and administration of justice,” the agency said.

Para was released after 18 months in 2022 in a terror-related case by the high court, which said the evidence gathered by the prosecution was “too sketchy” to deny him the relief.

In its 15-page order, the bench asked Para to present himself before the investigating officer as and when required, and not leave Jammu and Kashmir without the prior permission of the trial court.

The high court observed that Para had not been charged under Section 15 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which states that whoever does any act with an intent to threaten or likely to threaten the unity, integrity, security or sovereignty of India or with an intent to strike terror or likely to strike terror in the people or any section of the people in India or in any foreign country can be punished from five years to life sentence.

Over 272 million children out-of-school across the globe: Global Education Monitoring report

0
Schools reopen in 30 border areas of Jammu region as situation stabilizes

New Delhi, Jun 15: The global out-of-school population is now estimated to be 272 million, over 21 million more than the last estimate, according to UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Team (GEM).

The team, in its latest report, has pointed out that by 2025, countries will be off-track by 75 million relative to their national targets.

“Two reasons explain this upward adjustment. First, new enrolment and attendance data account for eight million, or 38 pc, of the increase. The ban on girls attending secondary school age in Afghanistan in 2021 also contributes to this increase,” the report said.

“Second, updated UN population estimates account for 13 million, or the remaining 62 pc, of the increase. Compared to the estimates last used in the out-of-school model, the 2024 World Population Prospects estimate that the number of 6- to 17-year-olds in 2025 (a proxy of the school-age population) is higher by 49 million (or by 3.1 pc),” it added.

The report also noted that the impact of conflicts on out-of-school populations which can be underestimated as conflicts hamper data collection.

The change in the global population estimates impacts out-of-school rate and population estimates, but the magnitude of that impact depends on the source of data on enrolment and attendance.

“If the source is administrative data, then the full increase of the population is passed on to the out-of-school population because there is no fresh information on enrolment.

“But if the source is survey data, then the increase of population is passed on to the in-school and out-of-school populations proportionately. As the model relies on survey data for many countries with large out-of-school populations, only part of the increased school-age population is estimated to be out of school,” it said.

In total, around 11 pc of primary school-age children (78 million), 15 pc of lower secondary school-age adolescents (64 million) and 31 pc of upper secondary school-age youths (130 million) are out of school.

The model used multiple data sources ( administrative, survey and census) to generate internally consistent trends of regional and global averages.

“The model at the country level reconciles different sources, imputes values on years when there are no data, and involves short-term projections.

“Therefore, they are not the same as countries’ official out-of-school values, which are based on a single source on a given year. It is these latter values, which are the basis for countries’ out-of-school rate targets to be achieved by 2025 and 2030,” the report said.

“Collectively, as the SDG 4 Scorecard shows, countries will reduce their out-of-school population by 165 million by 2030 if they meet their targets.

“However, it is projected that by 2025 countries will be off track by four percentage points among those of primary and lower secondary school age and by six percentage points among those of upper secondary school age. In total, this means that, already by 2025, countries will be off-track by 75 million relative to their national targets,” it added.

The report noted that the impact of conflict on out-of-school populations is being underestimated.

“The out-of-school model estimates assume stable patterns of school-age population progression through the education system. However, this methodological strength becomes a weakness in the case of emergencies and crises when school attendance changes suddenly.”

“Not only can it not be assumed that long-term trends will continue, but there is usually no information or insufficient information to understand crises’ short- and medium-term impacts. Conflict hampers data collection on school participation and therefore is likely to lead to an underestimation of the out-of-school populations,” it said.

Congress condemns Israel’s attack against Iran, calls for diplomacy

0
J&K Cong slams Pakistan for targeting Jammu, says it will pay for its sins

New Delhi, June 15: The Indian National Congress (INC) on Sunday condemned the recent Israeli airstrikes and targeted assassinations carried out on Iranian soil, calling them a “dangerous” step that could worsen tensions in the region and globally.

In a post on X, Congress MP and the party’s General Secretary in-charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, expressed the party’s position on the growing conflict between Iran and Israel. Jairam Ramesh wrote, “The Indian National Congress unequivocally condemns Israel’s recent bombings and targeted assassinations on Iranian soil, which represent a dangerous escalation with grave regional and global consequences. This attack on Iran’s sovereignty and encroachment of its rights, whether through aerial strikes or covert killings, only deepens instability and sows the seeds of further conflict.”

Congress affirmed its belief in diplomacy, dialogue, and international cooperation as the legitimate paths ahead. “The Congress party firmly believes that diplomacy, dialogue, and international cooperation, and not violence, are the only legitimate and sustainable path forward. Hostilities must cease immediately. Continued military brinkmanship risks plunging an already fragile region into wider war, with catastrophic human and economic fallout,” the post read.

Noting India’s ties with both Iran and Israel, Congress said that it is India’s moral responsibility to act as a bridge for de-escalation and peace.

The X post said, “India has long-standing civilizational ties with Iran and, in recent decades, has developed strategic relations with Israel. This unique position gives our country the moral responsibility and the diplomatic leverage to act as a bridge for de-escalation and peace.”

Adding on to its call for peace between the two nations, Congress suggested that India should use diplomatic channels to promote a dialogue, as many Indian citizens live and work across West Asia.

“With lakhs of Indian citizens living and working across West Asia, peace in the region is a vital national interest apart from being a geopolitical concern. India must speak clearly, act responsibly, and use every diplomatic channel available to defuse tensions and promote a return to dialogue,” the post further read.

On Saturday, this comes after Jairam Ramesh took a jibe at the government over India distancing itself from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s (SCO) statement on the Israel-Iran conflict, and asked if “we have been reduced to being an abject apologist for Israel”.

“What does this MEA statement really mean? It seems to suggest that Israel can attack Iran but that Iran should exercise restraint and not climb the escalatory ladder. Have we been reduced to being an abject apologist for Israel? We cannot even condemn Israel’s attacks on and targeted assassinations in Iran?” Ramesh asked on X, referring to the statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.

Earlier on Saturday, the MEA in a statement stated India did not participate in the discussions on the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) statement on recent developments between Israel and Iran.

SCO, in its statement, condemned military strikes “carried out by Israel against Iran on June 13” and expressed serious concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
