Covid-19 virus protein triggers immune attack on healthy cells: Study

Srinagar, Jun 15: With eight new cases over the past 24 hours, J&K is recording a steady trickle of COVID19 cases amidst sparse testing. All positive cases exhibit mild symptoms, not necessitating admission, doctors said.

However, they have warned that high risk group people must be protected and kept away from crowds, and any people having flu symptoms.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in its COVID19 state wise status report has stated that J&K currently has 17 active cases of COVID19. Over the past 24 hours, from Saturday to Sunday, eight new cases have been added to the list from here. No death due to the viral infection has been recorded so far in J&K, while across India, 97 people are recorded as having died to COVID19 since January this year.

A doctor working in a hospital here said that some people are also getting tested at private diagnostic centers, and they may not reflect immediately on the Dashboard of the Health Ministry. “However, the situation is not at all alarming,” he added.

Dr Naveed Nazir Shah, Head Department of Pulmonology, GMC Srinagar said the COVID29 infection with the circulating variant, did not cause any severe symptoms. “Most patients have mild fever and regular flu symptoms,” he said. He however said that not many people were getting tested. “We have not seen many patients here at GMC Hospitals,” he said. He advised people to follow mask advisory in crowds and stay isolated in case they have any flu symptoms. “Parents should refrain from sending children to school if they have fever, cough, sore throat or runny nose,” he said. At Khyber Hospital, Critical Care Specialist,  Dr Showkat Shah said that COVID19 was not affecting people the same way it did earlier. However, he said, there was a need to protect the high-risk people as they may be at risk of getting into severe illness. “Those with chronic diseases – malignancies, Chronic Kidney Disease, respiratory ailments, or those on immunosuppressant drugs must be protected. They must not be exposed to crowds or people with flu symptoms,” he said. The World Health Organisation has classified the sub variants of Omicron JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7 that are in circulation as “Variants Under Monitoring”.

BJP accuses Omar govt of neglecting tribals

BJP accuses Omar govt of neglecting tribals

Bishnah (Jammu), Jun 15: Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Gulam Ali Khatana Sunday accused the Omar Abdullah-led government of “systematically sidelining Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes in Jammu and Kashmir by failing to implement key welfare legislations introduced after the abrogation of Article 370.”

Addressing a public gathering at Darbar Ground in Bishnah, Khatana alleged that landmark central laws including the Forest Rights Act and the SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act- though extended to Jammu and Kashmir post-2019, remained largely unimplemented on the ground.

“The tribal population continues to live without even the most basic amenities. Their hamlets lack roads, electricity, clean water and healthcare. Funds are being allocated, but there is no accountability. One has to ask- where is the money going?” Khatana questioned.

Senior BJP leader claimed that while the Modi government ensured constitutional rights were extended to all communities after the special status of J&K was revoked, the Omar-led National Conference government failed to follow through.

“Is it because these communities supported the abrogation of Article 370? Are they now being punished for their loyalty to the nation?” he asked, calling the situation “deeply discriminatory and politically motivated.”

The BJP MP pointed out that several state and centrally sponsored development schemes had seen progress under the present Lieutenant Governor-led administration, but these initiatives were now allegedly being obstructed or diluted.

“Development cannot be selective. Welfare must reach the last person in the line,” he said.

Moreover, Khatana demanded that the J&K government should release a White paper detailing the disbursement and on-ground status of all state and central welfare schemes.

“People deserve to know how public money is being spent. Communities that are constitutionally entitled to development cannot be left in the lurch,” he added.

He also used the platform to urge tribal elders and local leaders to act against the growing menace of drug addiction and social decay among youth in marginalised areas.

“Social neglect is driving our youth toward dangerous paths. We need collective responsibility to protect the next generation,” he said.

Khatana appealed to the Lieutenant Governor to intervene if the state administration continued to fail in delivering basic rights and infrastructure to the tribal and backward populations.

“These aren’t favours. Rather, these are rights guaranteed by the Constitution. If the government of the day won’t uphold them, the LG must step in and ensure justice,” he asserted.

Move rekindles hope in Pahalgam

Move rekindles hope in Pahalgam

Pahalgam, Jun 15: Nearly two months after a deadly attack in the Baisaran meadows killed 25 tourists and a local pony operator, the Jammu and Kashmir government’s decision to reopen several parks and sightseeing spots in Pahalgam has revived hopes for the destination’s struggling tourism sector. Nestled in the picturesque Lidder valley in south Kashmir, Pahalgam was teeming with visitors until the April 22 attack brought the flow of tourists to a halt.

In the aftermath, authorities shut down 40 tourist destinations across Jammu and Kashmir, including major attractions in Pahalgam.

During a visit to Pahalgam on Saturday, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced the reopening of 16 tourist destinations – eight each in Jammu and Kashmir. Among them are the parks in main Pahalgam – Club park; Poshwan park; Lavender park; Lidder view park and others besides the famed Betab valley, which are expected to reopen in the coming days. Local stakeholders say the move offers a much-needed boost.

“For the first time since the attack, we’re seeing bookings again,” said Ibrahim Raina, owner of Brown Palace Hotel. “Most visitors are locals, but a few tourists from outside have also arrived.” Raina said his hotel had bookings lined up through August, but they were all cancelled following the attack and new reservations had stopped entirely. Pahalgam and its surrounding areas are home to more than 800 hotels; guesthouses and huts, supporting the livelihoods of over 7,000 people. Many hoteliers were forced to downsize or lay off staff due to the downturn. Pony operators, who rely heavily on tourist traffic, are hoping they will be allowed to resume operations. “I used to earn Rs 1,500 a day, but we haven’t earned anything since the attack,” said Bilal Magray, a pony operator. “We hope to resume work soon. Our peak season is gone, but maybe local visitors will make up for some of the losses.”

Another pony operator, Muhammad Ismail, expressed hope that the upcoming Amarnath Yatra – scheduled to begin July 3 – will bring more pilgrims through the Pahalgam route. Locals are also calling for the revival of adventure tourism, which remains suspended.

“We ran a zipline in Baisaran that offered 50 to 60 rides daily, earning about Rs 15,000 a day and supporting 10 people,” said Zahid, an adventure operator. “We hope we’re allowed to resume, even if not in Baisaran, then elsewhere.”

Other activities such as zorbing, rock climbing and rafting have also been halted, affecting many livelihoods. Ishan, 22, a local IT graduate, urged the administration to permit eco-friendly camping, which is popular with both locals and visitors.

At the Pahalgam taxi stand, drivers are hoping for better days ahead. “Before the attack, I earned Rs 2,000 a day, ferrying tourists to Aru, Chandanwari and Betab valley,” said Nisar Ahmad, 45, a cab driver. “Now the stand is deserted. We hope all spots reopen soon.”

Tourist guides also expressed optimism that trekking routes would be reopened. “We’re hoping we can take visitors to the trekking spots again,” said Umar, 30, a local guide. Mushtaq Ahmad Pahalgami, a local activist, welcomed the government’s decision but urged additional support for those impacted.

“The government should announce a special relief package for pony operators, taxi drivers and other daily wage workers affected by the shutdown,” he said. “A peaceful and successful Amarnath Yatra will benefit the entire tourism industry. The pilgrims will become ambassadors for Kashmir’s hospitality.” Meanwhile, some tourists from outside the valley have begun returning. “We have visited Pahalgam for the past four years and always had a great experience,” said Vinod, 40, who arrived with his family and friends from New Delhi. “We feel safe and especially welcomed this year – we are being pampered.”

2 dead, several feared drowned after bridge collapses in Pune’s Kundmala: CM Fadnavis

2 dead, several feared drowned after bridge collapses in Pune’s Kundmala: CM Fadnavis

New Delhi, Jun 15: At least two people have died and several others are feared drowned after a bridge over the Indrayani river collapsed in Kundmala, a popular monsoon tourist spot in Pune’s Maval area, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, when a large number of tourists had gathered in the area.

According to NDTV, 32 people sustained injuries in the incident, with six in critical condition. The sudden collapse sent dozens plunging into the swollen river, which had seen a sharp rise in water level due to heavy rainfall over the past two days.

NDTV reported that Home Minister Amit Shah expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the collapse. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently in Cyprus, also spoke to Mr Fadnavis and was briefed on the ongoing rescue and relief operations.

Search and rescue efforts are underway, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and emergency services deployed at the site. Six people have been rescued so far. Chief Minister Fadnavis, in a post on social media, confirmed that some individuals have been swept away and said relief efforts are being carried out “on a war footing.”

The tragedy unfolded despite prior concerns raised by locals about the structural integrity of the bridge, which was last renovated about four to five years ago. Many tourists, unaware of the warnings, had been on the bridge when it gave way.

An orange alert had already been issued for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, with forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the ghat regions. The deluge likely contributed to the river’s force and the bridge’s failure. Officials have launched an investigation into the collapse, while urgent efforts continue to locate the missing and provide aid to the injured.

BCCI trims daily allowances for staff, streamlines travel policy

BCCI trims daily allowances for staff, streamlines travel policy

New Delhi, Jun 15: The daily allowances of the BCCI staff across departments, which have not been paid since January, will finally be released following the streamlining of the domestic ‘tournament allowance policy’ by the board’s top brass.

As per the existing BCCI travel policy, the employees are paid a per diem of Rs 15,000 for short-term travel (up to four days) and Rs 10,000 for long travel usually relating to the Indian Premier League (IPL), Women’s Premier League (WPL) and ICC events hosted by India. A one-time incidental allowance during the travel is Rs 7500.

According to the revised policy, the incidental allowance component has been removed, and employees will now be paid a flat Rs 10,000 per day for their time on the road. The IPL window is slightly longer than two months, while ICC events also last at least a month.

A BCCI source told PTI that after tax deduction at source, the per day allowance comes to Rs 6500.

As the policy was going to be revised, the BCCI staff, including the finance, operations and media departments, have not been paid their daily allowances for the IPL and WPL, but now that the policy has been formulated, their dues should be cleared soon.

“A clear-cut policy was needed in terms of allowances, as some employees were claiming allowances even when they were operating out of the Mumbai headquarters during tournaments. “Now that it has been devised, the dues will be cleared soon,” added the source.

For more clarity, an employee who is travelling for the whole of the 70-day IPL would be eligible for a daily allowance of Rs 10,000, with the total claiming amounting to Rs 7 lakh.

For someone who has limited travel during the IPL, they would be eligible to claim only 60 per cent of the 70-day allowance, and someone who is not travelling at all can claim 40 per cent of the amount accrued for 70 days.

As far as foreign travel is concerned, most BCCI employees are paid USD 300 per day.

On the other hand, the honorary office-bearers, including the president, secretary, treasurer, vice-president and joint secretary, are entitled to a daily allowance of USD 1000 on foreign tours.

They are also paid Rs 40000 for a one-day meeting within India and Rs 30000 per day for a multi-day domestic work trip.
