Two Indians killed, one abducted in terror attack in Niger; Indian Mission in touch with local authorities

Niger, July 20: In a heinous terror attack, two Indians were killed while one was abducted in the Dosso region of Niger, as noted by the Indian Embassy in Niger.

The Indian Embassy in Niamey is in touch with the local authorities to repatriate the mortal remains of those killed and ensure safe release of the abducted Indian.

The mission also cautioned all Indians in Niger to remain vigilant.

In a post on X it said, “In a heinous terror attack on 15 July in Niger’s Dosso region, two Indian nationals tragically lost their lives and one was abducted. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Mission in Niamey is in touch with local authorities to repatriate mortal remains and ensure safe release of the abducted Indian. All Indians in Niger are advised to remain vigilant.”

Arab News reported citing local sources that unidentified armed attackers ambushed a Nigerien army unit providing security at a construction site for an electrical line in the Dosso region, around 100 kilometres (63 miles) from the capital city of Niamey.

Previously in March, Niger had seen a terrorist attack by the Islamic State in Great Sahara in Kokorou, which had resulted in the deaths of at least 44 civilians and had left 13 severely injured, as reported by UN Security Council Press.

The members had issued a statement condemning the attack in the strongest terms and had underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.

Significantly, the members had underscored the importance for all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate with the authorities of Niger as well as all other relevant authorities in this regard.

The statement further highlighted, “The members of the Security Council reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed. They reaffirmed the need for all States to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.”

US State Department’s 2023 Country Report on Terrorism for Niger had observed, that terrorist organizations exploited Niger’s extensive borderlands and sparsely populated regions to attack and recruit among populations where access to government services was weak and economic opportunity negligible.

Due to the small size of its “defence force, ineffective coordination among security services, budget shortfalls, and instability in Burkina Faso, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, and the Lake Chad Basin”, Niger’s efforts to fight terrorism were hampered.

Niger is in the midst of a political upheaval as a military coup has taken control, ousting the democratically elected President.

In July, 2023 President Mohamed Bazoum was detained by the Presidential Guard and General Abdourahamane Tchiani declared himself the new leader. This event led to widespread international condemnation.

The Niger coup is the seventh such event in West and Central Africa since 2020, highlighting a concerning trend of military interventions in the region.

LG Sinha Reiterates commitment to uproot terrorism, establish lasting peace in J&K

Srinagar, July 20: Reiterating the government’s unwavering commitment to uproot terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday said that the administration is not striving to “buy peace,” but to establish a lasting and just peace in the region. He asserted that while no innocent will be touched, the guilty will not be spared.

Speaking at an event here, LG Sinha stressed on the pivotal role of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in dismantling the terror ecosystem. “The police have a crucial responsibility to destroy the support system of terrorists—be it financial, logistical, or otherwise,” he said. “It’s not just the terrorist who needs to be dealt with, but also the entire machinery that facilitates terror.”

He criticized the past approach where individuals linked to terror activities were given government jobs, while victims of terrorism were neglected and left to fend for themselves.

Highlighting a new chapter in the region’s healing, the LG mentioned that the administration is now actively working to rehabilitate the families who have suffered at the hands of terrorists. “Many families in J&K have lost their loved ones to terrorism. In some homes, only elderly parents remain after their sons were brutally killed. Thousands were killed at the behest of Pakistan,” LG Sinha said.

He said that on July 13, 40 terror victim families in Baramulla were provided with appointment letters. “Some youth lost their fathers when they were just two years old. Today, we are ensuring that their pain is acknowledged and justice is delivered,” he said.

Calling on the public to stand united with security forces, the LG said that “Naya Jammu and Kashmir” just not a slogan but a reality which has evolved in the past few years. “In this new era, pens and laptops have replaced stones in the hands of youth. Schools and colleges now remain open year-round without the disruption of hartals. Gone are the days of separatist slogans and shutdown calendars. Today, we have calendars filled with national and international events,” he added.

LG Sinha also noted the rise in startups and innovation among youth, a marked shift from past unrest. “In Naya J&K, the noise of factories has replaced separatist slogans. People can now freely take part in religious and cultural events like Muharram processions and Eid Melas, and families can move around without fear and watch movies in cinema halls.”

“People must join hands with security forces. Peace is not just the absence of conflict—it is the presence of justice, opportunity, and hope. And we are committed to making that peace a permanent reality,” LG Sinha said. (KNO)

India-Pakistan legends match called off following Indian players' boycott

Birmingham, July 20: A veterans’ cricket match involving India and Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends here on Sunday has been cancelled after Indian players, including Shikhar Dhawan, refused to be a part of it citing the Pahalgam terror attack in April.

The second edition of the tournament started on June 18 at Edgbaston and is scheduled for an August 2 final. World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh is the captain of the India legends, while the squad also features the likes of Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa and Varun Aaron among others.

The WCL organisers shared a statement on their X account, detailing the decision of cancellation and said their intention while conducting the match was to recreate some “happy memories.”

“After hearing the news that the Pakistan hockey team will be coming to India this year, and seeing the recent India vs Pakistan volleyball match along with a few other fixtures between the two nations in different sports, we thought of continuing with the India vs Pakistan match at WCL, just to create some happy memories for people around the globe.

“But maybe in the process, we ended up hurting the feelings of many and stirring emotions,” the WCL statement read.

The organisers also apologised for “unintentionally causing discomfort” to Indian legends.

“Hence, we have decided to call off the India-Pakistan match. We sincerely apologise again for hurting the sentiments and hope people will understand that all we ever wanted was to bring a few happy moments to the fans,” it read.

Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan also shared a statement on X, announcing his stand not to participate in the match against Pakistan.

“This is to formally reiterate and confirm that Mr. Shikhar Dhawan will not be participating in any matches against the Pakistan team in the upcoming WCL League. This decision was communicated earlier during our discussion on call and WhatsApp dated 11th May 2025,” read his statement.

Dhawan made it clear that he has taken the call in view of the current “geopolitical” situation between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of Pahalgam terror attack and the ensuing Operation Sindoor carried out by the country.

“In view of the current geopolitical situation and the prevailing tensions between India and Pakistan, Mr. Dhawan and his team have taken this position after due consideration.

“We respectfully request the league’s understanding and cooperation on this matter,” he said in the statement.

India had defeated Pakistan by five wickets to win the inaugural edition of the six-team legends tournament last year in Edgbaston.

Saudi Arabia's 'Sleeping Prince' dies after 20 years in coma

Riyadh, July 20: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, widely known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has passed away at the age of 36 after spending nearly two decades in a coma.

His family confirmed his death over the weekend, bringing an emotional end to one of the kingdom’s most heart-rending royal stories.

“With hearts full of faith in Allah’s decree and destiny, and with profound sadness and sorrow, we mourn our beloved son Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away to Allah’s mercy today,” his father Prince Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz posted on social media.

Funeral prayers are scheduled to be held on Sunday after the Asr prayer at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, the family announced.

Prince Al-Waleed slipped into a coma in 2005 at the age of 15 following a devastating car accident in London.

He suffered a severe brain haemorrhage and was brought back to Saudi Arabia, where he was admitted to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh.

Despite extensive medical intervention, including treatment from specialists in the United States and Spain, the prince never regained full consciousness.

For nearly 20 years, he remained in a vegetative state, reliant on a ventilator and life support.

His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, stood by his decision to keep his son alive, rejecting any suggestion of withdrawing life support. His unwavering presence at his son’s bedside year after year struck a deep emotional chord with people across the country and beyond.

Born in April 1990, Prince Al-Waleed was the eldest son of Prince Khaled bin Talal, a notable member of the Saudi royal family.

His long medical ordeal captured national attention and became a symbol of parental devotion and hope amid impossible odds.

Indian players refuse to play against Shahid Afridi in World Championship of Legends clash

Birmingham, July 20: The highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match in the second edition of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) is in jeopardy, as five Indian players have reportedly refused to play against a Pakistan team featuring Shahid Afridi.

Afridi, a former Pakistan captain, has previously made controversial remarks about India and visited military sites in Pakistan in a show of solidarity, which has not sat well with Indian fans or former players. He has also engaged in heated exchanges on social media with several Indian cricketers.

According to a report by TelecomAsia.net, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, and Harbhajan Singh have informed the organisers of their unwillingness to play if Afridi is part of the opposition lineup.

The six-nation WCL tournament, which includes teams from India, Pakistan, Australia, West Indies, South Africa, and England, faced backlash on social media after announcing the India-Pakistan fixture. Fans from both nations questioned the timing of the match amid recent tensions.

The India-Pakistan match, scheduled for Sunday in Birmingham, would have marked the first cricket encounter between the two sides since the Pahalgam terror attack in April, which killed 26 people. India responded with Operation Sindoor, launching missile and drone strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan.

Despite the controversy, WCL organisers denied knowledge of any player boycott.

“All matches were scheduled with the consent of participating teams, and the India-Pakistan game is a sell-out,” an organiser told TelecomAsia.net. “As far as we know, the game is still on.”

India Legends won the inaugural WCL last year, defeating Pakistan in the final. Afridi, along with the five Indian players now in question, featured in that edition.

Monsoon mayhem: Over 200 dead, 560 injured as relentless rains lash Pakistan

Islamabad, July 20: Over 200 people have lost their lives, including nearly 100 children, since the onset of Monsoon in late June, Geo TV reported on Saturday, citing Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

According to Geo TV which referred to the official data, Pakistan’s Punjab accounted for 123 of the total deaths. This was followed by 40 deaths in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 21 in Sindh, 16 in Balochistan, 1 in Islamabad and 1 in Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

While the causes of death varied, it was reported that at least 118 people were killed due to collapse of houses, 30 due to flash floods while others lost their lives to drowning, lightning strikes, electrocution, and landslides.

Geo TV said that the rains have injured more than 560 people, including 182 children.
It further reported that in Rawalpindi, flash floods swept through homes, streets, and markets, submerging entire neighbourhoods, water levels rose dangerously — in some areas reaching rooftops — forcing residents to flee, leaving behind their belongings.

Faisalabad has also witnessed extensive damage, with 11 deaths and 60 injuries reported in 33 incidents over just two days. Most of the fatalities occurred due to the collapse of weakened structures.

Pakistan’s Punjab saw heavy rainfall and landslides that destroyed infrastructure. As per Geo TV, at least 32 roads in Chakwal were washed away after over 450mm of rainfall.

Along with infrastructure damage, communication links remain severed, and the power supply is yet to be restored in several regions.

According to a recent report by UN News, there are also fears of glacier lake outburst floods in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan regions.

UN News highlighted how these floods show Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate shocks. In the past in 2022, the monsoon floods had killed more than 1,700 people, displaced millions and devastated water systems. It had also resulted in economic damage estimated at nearly USD 40 billion.

Pakistan faces regular monsoon flooding from June to September, often resulting in deadly landslides, infrastructure damage and large-scale displacement, particularly in densely populated or poorly drained regions.

Tarun Chugh welcomes US decision declaring TRF terrorist outfit

Tarun Chugh welcomes US decision declaring TRF terrorist outfit

Jammu, Jul 19: BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh today welcomed the decision of the United States (US) government to officially designate The Resistance Front (TRF) as a terrorist organisation, calling it a “diplomatic victory for India” and a firm endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertive foreign policy doctrine.

In a statement, Chugh said the TRF’s involvement in terror activities, particularly its role in the recent Pahalgam massacre, was not just an attack on innocent civilians but a direct challenge to India’s sovereignty and peace.

“This move by the US exposes the Pakistan-backed terror ecosystem and vindicates India’s long-standing stand that groups like TRF are merely front organizations for Lashkar-e-Taiba and other Pakistan-sponsored terror outfits,” he added.

The BJP leader said that this is the result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clear and uncompromising stance on terrorism, and his ability to rally global powers to act decisively. “Whether it is isolating terror sponsors at global forums or pushing for international accountability, PM Modi’s foreign policy has delivered where others only made statements,” Chugh remarked.

He also pointed out that while the opposition parties continue to politicise India’s national security issues, global powers like the US are standing with India in its fight against terrorism. “Today’s designation by the US is not just a statement—it’s a strategic alignment with India’s security concerns,” Chugh emphasised.

BJP leader called on the global community to go a step further and expose and sanction Pakistan’s deep-state operatives who continue to provide cover and funding to groups like LeT and TRF. He said this moment must serve as a warning to terror sponsors that India under PM Modi is not isolated but globally backed.

“This is a message to the enemies of peace: India will not bow down, and the world is standing with us,” Chugh said.

Kupwara MLA accuses CM’s Advisor of ‘ultra-constitutional interference’

Kupwara MLA accuses CM’s Advisor of ‘ultra-constitutional interference’

Kupwara, Jul 19: In a letter raising serious constitutional and political concerns, the sitting MLA from Kupwara Mir Mohammad Fayaz has accused the advisor to the Chief Minister of “ultra-constitutional interference” in the affairs of his constituency.

The MLA has alleged that the advisor, a former political rival who lost the recently held assembly election against him, is acting beyond his mandate and “undermining” the authority of an elected representative.

The MLA Kupwara, asserts that the advisor, despite being unelected, has been summoning government officials, attending meetings meant for elected lawmakers, and influencing administrative decisions in the Kupwara constituency without any legal or constitutional backing.

“The institution of MLA is a consultative pillar of democratic governance, empowered directly by the people’s mandate,” the letter addressed to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary reads. “The advisor in question has no constitutional status to bypass or override the electoral verdict of the people of Kupwara.”

Mir further claims that this advisor, who had contested and lost against him in the last assembly elections, is now being used by the ruling party to reverse the electoral outcome through bureaucratic backchannels. “He is a regular invitee to official meetings concerning Kupwara, where his inputs are entertained while mine are disregarded,” Mir stated, calling this a “majoritarian assault on democracy.”

Raising a red flag on the broader constitutional implications, MLA Kupwara questioned whether a ruling party can extend its legislative power to a non-elected individual to undermine a lawfully elected opposition MLA.

“I formally object to his presence in official meetings and his interference in constituency matters until his constitutional role is clearly defined,” he wrote.
