Without EV subsidies, Musk to close up shop, head back home to South Africa: Trump

Elon Musk renews criticism of Trump's big bill as it faces key Senate vote

New Delhi, July 02: US President Donald Trump has issued a deportation warning for Tesla and Space CEO Elon Musk who also served as his former advisor, saying the tech billionaire may need to “close up shop” and move back to South Africa in absence of electric vehicle (EV) subsidies.

Trump’s warning on his Truth Social platform late on Tuesday (US time) came amid the feud between him and Musk over the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’.

“Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly Endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate. It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one. Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!” the US President further added.

Trump had appointed Musk the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Meanwhile, Musk has threatened to unseat the lawmakers who support the unpopular package.

“Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame,” Musk, who was Trump’s presidential advisor till May, said in a post on X.

“And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” he added.

Musk also warned that he would launch a new party — the American Party — if lawmakers pass Trump’s spending bill in the Senate.

The US Senate on Saturday narrowly advanced President Trump’s major tax-cut and spending bill, marking a key procedural step toward passing the legislation before the upcoming July 4 recess.

The 940-page package, formally titled the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, was approved in a 51-49 procedural vote late Saturday night, setting the stage for formal debate. The bill aims to extend the 2017 tax cuts, cut other taxes and boost military and border security spending, while offsetting revenue losses through deep cuts to Medicaid, food stamps, renewable energy and other social welfare programmes.

According to analysts, after breaking the 24,500-25,000 range, Nifty has moved to the new range of 25,200-25,800.

Positive news about a possible trade deal between India and US can help break the upper limit of the range but it would be difficult to sustain the Nifty at higher levels for long, they added.

Nifty Bank was down 45.20 points or 0.08 per cent at 57,414.25 in early trade. The Nifty Midcap 100 index was trading at 59,809.25 after adding 59.20 points or 0.25 per cent. Nifty Smallcap 100 index was at 19,082.10 after climbing 26.40 points or 0.14 per cent.

“The charts of Bank Nifty indicate that it may get support at 57,300 followed by 57,000 and 56,800. If the index advances further, 57,650 would be the initial key resistance, followed by 57,800 and 58,000,” said Hardik Matalia Derivative Analyst of Choice Broking.

Meanwhile, in the Sensex pack, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, ICICI Bank, TCS, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, HCL Tech and Adani Ports were the top gainers. Whereas, Asian Paints, HDFC Bank, BEL and Eternal were the top losers.

US Senate passes Trump’s landmark mega-bill

0
Trump’s reciprocal tariffs take effect undeterred by negotiations

Washington, July 02: The GOP-led Senate passed US President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, a major stride toward Trump’s goal of getting the legislation to his desk and signed by this week’s end.

The sweeping bill passed narrowly by 51 to 50, with US Vice President JD Vance casting the deciding ballot. Three Republicans were the only GOP lawmakers to vote no: senators Susan Collins, Thom Tillis and Rand Paul.

The legislation is considered the GOP’s biggest legislative win in the lead-up to next year’s midterms, in which the party could lose its slim majority in the House, Xinhua news agency reported.

The bill extends Trump’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, slashes taxes on tips and provides new spending for the military and border security.

“Today was a historic day … and we’re very excited to be a part of something that is going to make America stronger, safer and more prosperous,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune said after the bill passed the Senate.

But there remains one more major hurdle ahead, as the bill needs to be passed in the House of Representatives, which is expected to vote as early as Wednesday.

“It’s a great bill. There is something for everyone, and I think it’s going to go very nicely in the House. Actually, I think it will be easier in the House than it was in the Senate,” Trump said.

However, Democrats have been vehemently opposed to the mega-bill, which funds an agenda to which Democrats stand in stark contrast.

Democrats have blasted the tax cuts in the bill as reductions that benefit the wealthy. Republicans maintain that the cuts will help the middle class.

The bill has angered Democrats for what the party says are cuts to essential programs such as Medicaid — health care coverage for low-income people — as well as to food stamps.

Democrats also fret the bill will add trillions of US dollars to the surging national debt.

An analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said the changes Trump made in the Senate version of the bill would add trillions of dollars to the already significant national debt, and that the bill would create considerable losses in health care coverage.

The CBO has predicted that the bill would add $2.4 trillion to the national debt in the next 10 years, while also pushing up the deficit by around $3.3 trillion between 2025 and 2034.

The CBO’s analysis also forecast that the bill would cause 11.8 million more Americans to lose their insurance by 2034, which, as experts have said, will surely create hurdles for the bill’s passage in the House before Trump’s July 4 deadline.

FFRC tightens noose against private schools for charging admission fee

FFRC tightens noose against private schools for charging admission fee

Srinagar, Jul 1: The Fee Fixation and Regulation Committee (FFRC) has tightened its noose against the private schools for charging admission fees from the parents in violation of the rules set by the competent authorities.

The move comes barely after three weeks when FFRC issued strict instructions to the private schools to refrain from collecting admission fees from the parents “illegally” without a receipt.

On July 1, 2025, a case came to the fore wherein a complaint was filed in the office of FFRC that a private school in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district has collected admission fees from the parents in violation of the rules.

In the wake of this, a notice has been issued to the management of Radiant Public School, Anantnag, by the Chairman FFRC Justice (Retd) Sunil Hali with the instructions to submit the details of all accounts of the school or trust along with the name of the banks duly attested by the branch head.

“You are also directed to submit the transactions conducted from the said accounts with effect from April 2024, to date, to find out that no amount has been transferred to private accounts except expenses incurred in running the school,” the communication reads.

The Chairman of FFRC has said that it came to the notice of the committee that some private schools were receiving admission fees in violation of the J&K School Education Act, 2002 (as Amended) and orders issued by the committee from time to time.

On June 11 of this year, FFRC issued a circular wherein parents and students, who were charged admission fees by any private school, were requested to come forward with their grievances, so that necessary action is taken against such erring schools following the law.

“It was assured that the identity of such parents and students shall be kept confidential,” it reads.

As per the fresh communication FFRC chairman said that a complaint has been received by the FFRC against Radiant Public School, and it has been alleged that the school has charged admission fees, without issuing any receipt to a student in violation of Section 20E(1) of the Act of 2002.

Chairman FFRC said that charging admission fees was against the rules framed under the SED Act 2002, and the orders issued by the Committee from time to time.

“Given the above, you are hereby directed to show cause as to why action in terms of the ibid Act, rules and orders issued by the Committee from time to time, be not taken against you,” reads the notice issued to the chairman and principal of the Radiant Public School, Anantnag.

“Your reply should reach this office within 15 days, failing which, it shall be construed that you have nothing to say in your defence,” it reads.

The principal has been directed to submit details of all accounts of the school or trust, along with the name of the bank, duly attested by the branch head.

“You are also directed to submit the transactions conducted from the said accounts with effect from April 1, 2024, to date, to find out that no amount has been transferred to private accounts except expenses incurred in running the school,” it reads.

The Chairman of FFRC has said that the Supreme Court has categorically stated that no amount should be transferred to the private account from the school or trust account.

“An affidavit duly attested by a Judicial Magistrate 1st Class that no admission fee has been received from the students should be submitted to the office,” it reads.

The school has been asked to submit the list of the fresh admissions made during the years 2024 and 2025, while mentioning the name of the student, parentage, address, contact and email address as well.

FFRC Chairman has further issued a corrigendum to order number FFRC/adm/024/4162 issued on July 25, 2024, stating that only 50 percent of transport fees will be charged by schools during the vacation period.

As per the official document, FFRC chairman said that regarding the matter of charging of transport fee by private schools during the winter break (Kashmir Division) and summer break (Jammu  Division), it has been decided that the private schools will be charging only 50 percent of the transport fee provided the transport facility is owned and operated by the school itself.

“In cases where the transport facility is outsourced, hired from a third party, or operated under a contractual arrangement, no transport fee shall be charged during the break periods by such outsourced agencies and transporters. This directive shall be effective from the academic session 2024-25 in Kashmir division and 2025-26 in Jammu division onwards,” the official document reads.

It reads that all other terms and conditions of the original order shall remain unchanged.

“The Director School Education, Kashmir and Jammu, shall ensure strict adherence to this clarification while monitoring of implementation thereof,” the document reads.

PM Modi embarks on 5-nation visit, says India committed to BRICS

J&K eagerly awaits PM Modi heralding a new dawn of progress

New Delhi, July 02: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said India is committed to BRICS as a vital platform for cooperation among emerging economies as he left on a week-long visit to five countries, including Brazil where he will attend the bloc’s meeting.

“Together, we strive for a more peaceful, equitable, just, democratic and balanced multipolar world order,” he said in his departure statement.

During the week-long travel, the PM will visit Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil and Namibia.

Ghana will be his first port of call. Modi said that at the invitation of President John Dramani Mahama, he will be there on July 2 and 3.

Ghana is a valued partner in the Global South and plays an important role in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States, he said, adding that he looked forward to talks aimed at further deepening the two countries’ historical ties and opening up new windows of cooperation, including in the areas of investment, energy, health, security, capacity building and development partnership.

He said, “As fellow democracies, it will be an honour to speak at the Parliament of Ghana.”

For the next couple of days after visiting Ghana, he will be in Trinidad and Tobago, a country with which India shares deep-rooted historical, cultural and people-to-people connect.

Modi will meet President Christine Carla Kangaloo, who was the chief guest at this year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who has recently assumed office for the second term.

“Indians first arrived in Trinidad and Tobago 180 years ago. This visit will provide an opportunity to rejuvenate the special bonds of ancestry and kinship that unite us,” the Indian prime minister said.

Modi will then travel to Buenos Aires, the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister to Argentina in 57 years.

He said Argentina is a key economic partner in Latin America and a close collaborator in the G20 and that he looked forward to discussions with President Javier Milei, whom he had met last year.

“We will focus on advancing our mutually beneficial cooperation, including in the areas of agriculture, critical minerals, energy, trade, tourism, technology, and investment,” Modi said.

He will attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6 and 7.

As a founding member, India is committed to BRICS as a vital platform for cooperation among emerging economies, he said.

“Together, we strive for a more peaceful, equitable, just, democratic and balanced multipolar world order,” he added.

On the sidelines of the summit, Modi will meet several world leaders.

“I will travel to Brasilia for a bilateral State Visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly six decades. This visit will provide an opportunity to strengthen our close partnership with Brazil, and work with my friend, President H.E. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on advancing the priorities of the Global South,” he said.

Namibia, which Modi described as a trusted partner sharing a common history of struggle against colonialism, will be his last destination.

He will meet President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and chart a new roadmap for cooperation for the benefit of the two peoples, regions and the wider Global South, Modi said.

He added, “It will be a privilege to also address the Joint Session of Namibian Parliament as we celebrate our enduring solidarity and shared commitment for freedom and development.”

Modi expressed confidence that his visits to the five countries will reinforce India’s bonds and friendship across the Global South, strengthen their partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic, and deepen engagements in the multilateral platforms such as BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS and the CARICOM.

Trump says Israel agreed on terms for 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, warns Hamas to accept deal

Trump says Israel agreed on terms for 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, warns Hamas to accept deal

Washington, Jul 2: US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Israel has agreed on terms for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza and warned Hamas to accept the deal before conditions worsen.

Trump announced the development as he prepares to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for talks at the White House on Monday.

The US leader has been increasing pressure on the Israeli government and Hamas to broker a ceasefire and hostage agreement and bring about an end to the war in Gaza.

“My Representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60 Day CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the War,” Trump wrote, saying the Qataris and Egyptians would deliver the final proposal.

“I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE,” he said.

Trump’s promise that it was his best and final offer may find a skeptical audience with Hamas.

Even before the expiration of the war’s longest ceasefire in March, Trump has repeatedly issued dramatic ultimatums to pressure Hamas to agree to longer pauses in the fighting that would see the release of more hostages and a return of more aid to Gaza’s civilian populace.

Still, Trump views the current moment as a potential turning point in the brutal conflict that has left more than 56,000 dead in the Palestinian territory.

The Gaza Health Ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its death count.

Hamas is still capable of landing fatal blows to Israeli forces. But US officials believe the group’s been significantly diminished as its centralised command and control capabilities have deteriorated over the course of the nearly 21-month conflict.

Meanwhile, Hamas’ chief backer Iran was badly battered last month by 12 days of strikes by Israel and the United States on Tehran’s key nuclear facilities.

Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs, Ron Dermer, was in Washington on Tuesday for talks with senior administration officials to discuss a potential Gaza ceasefire, Iran and other matters. Dermer was expected to meet with Vice President J D Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Earlier Tuesday, Trump repeated his hope for forging an Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal next week.

Asked if it’s time to put pressure on Netanyahu to get a ceasefire deal done, Trump said the Israeli prime minister was ready to come to an agreement.

“He wants to,” Trump said of Netanyahu in an exchange with reporters while visiting a new immigration detention facility in Florida.

“I think we’ll have a deal next week.”

Talks between Israel and Hamas have repeatedly faltered over a major sticking point — whether the war should end as part of any ceasefire agreement.

About 50 hostages remain captive in Gaza, with less than half believed to be alive.

Hamas says it is willing to free all the hostages in exchange for a full withdrawal of Israeli troops and an end to the war in Gaza.

Israel rejects that offer, saying it will agree to end the war if Hamas surrenders, disarms and goes into exile, something that the group refuses.

The announcement by Trump came as over 150 international charities and humanitarian groups on Tuesday called for disbanding a controversial Israeli and US-backed system to distribute aid in Gaza because of chaos and deadly violence against Palestinians seeking food at its sites.

The joint statement by groups including Oxfam, Save the Children and Amnesty International followed the killings of at least 10 Palestinians who were seeking desperately needed food, witnesses and health officials said.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 37 in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, according to Nasser Hospital.

“Tents, tents they are hitting with two missiles?” asked Um Seif Abu Leda, whose son was killed in the strikes. Mourners threw flowers on the body bags.

Before Trump’s announcement, Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, had warned that his country would respond forcefully to the firing of a missile the military said originated from Yemen.

Sirens sounded across parts of Israel, alerting residents to the attack and the launch of two projectiles from Gaza. All were intercepted by Israeli defense systems.

The missile launch marked the first attack by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels since the end of the 12-day war initiated by Israel with Iran.

Katz said Yemen could face the same fate as Tehran.

Nasruddin Amer, deputy head of the Houthi media office, vowed on social media that Yemen will not “stop its support for Gaza … unless the aggression stops and the siege on Gaza is lifted”.

Speaking to his Cabinet, Netanyahu did not elaborate on plans for his visit to Washington next week, except to say he will discuss a trade deal. Iran is also expected to be a main topic of discussion in Washington after Trump brokered a ceasefire between it and Israel.
