Gold snaps 7-day losing streak; rallies Rs 1,200 to Rs 98,670 per 10 g

Gold climbs Rs 1,400 to Rs 96,450 per 10 g; silver jumps Rs 1,000

New Delhi, July 01: Cutting short the seven-day losing streak, gold prices rebounded by Rs 1,200 to Rs 98,670 per 10 grams in the national capital on Tuesday due to fresh buying by stockists in line with strong global trends, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had settled at Rs 97,470 per 10 grams on Monday.

Gold of 99.5 per cent purity climbed by Rs 1,100 to Rs 98,150 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Tuesday. It had closed at Rs 97,050 per 10 grams in the previous market close.

“A retreat in the US dollar, driven by concerns over the ballooning US fiscal deficit and the market’s focus on President Donald Trump’s proposed tax-cutting and spending bill, has made gold more attractive,” Abans Financial Services’ Chief Executive Officer Chintan Mehta said.

President Donald Trump has also threatened new tariffs on Japan ahead of the July 9 deadline for the implementation of reciprocal tariff. These shifts are helping non-yielding assets like gold hold up, especially with inflation expectations still running high, Mehta added.

In addition, silver prices rallied by Rs 2,000 to Rs 1,04,800 per kilograms (inclusive of all taxes) on Tuesday. The white metal had finished at Rs 1,02,800 per kg on Monday.

On the global front, spot gold rose by USD 44.01 or 1.33 per cent to USD 3,346.92 per ounce.

“With participants increasingly pricing in sustained dollar weakness, gold continues to attract safe-haven buying.

“The sentiment remains buoyant this week, driven by expectations around key US economic data, particularly the non-farm payrolls, unemployment figures, and ADP non-farm employment change,” Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency at LKP Securities, said.

Experts also said that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s commentary will also provide further cues on the interest rate path, influencing further movement in the precious metal prices.

India welcomes Iran-Israel ceasefire; urges for peace through dialogue, diplomacy

New Delhi, July 01: India and Pakistan today exchanged lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen held in each other’s custody, in accordance with the provisions of the 2008 bilateral Agreement on Consular Access. The exchange took place simultaneously through diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), “India has shared lists of 382 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen in its custody, who are Pakistani or are believed-to-be-Pakistani.” Conversely, “Pakistan has shared lists of 53 civilian prisoners and 193 fishermen in its custody, who are Indian or are believed-to-be-Indian.”

The Government of India reiterated its call for the “early release and repatriation of civilian prisoners, fishermen along with their boats, and missing Indian defence personnel from Pakistan’s custody.” It has specifically requested Pakistan to expedite the release of 159 Indian prisoners and fishermen who have already completed their sentences.

India has also called on Pakistan to “provide immediate consular access to the 26 civilian prisoners and fishermen in Pakistan’s custody, who are believed-to-be-Indian and have not been provided consular access so far,” and urged Islamabad to “ensure the safety, security and welfare of all Indian and believed-to-be-Indian civilian prisoners and fishermen, pending their release and repatriation to India.”

India reaffirmed its commitment to addressing humanitarian issues on priority, stating, “India remains committed to addressing, on priority, all humanitarian matters, including those pertaining to prisoners and fishermen in each other’s country.”

In this context, India has pressed Pakistan to expedite nationality verification for 80 believed-to-be-Pakistani prisoners and fishermen in Indian custody, whose repatriation is pending due to a lack of nationality confirmation from Pakistan.

Highlighting past efforts, the MEA said, “As a result of sustained efforts by the Government, 2,661 Indian fishermen and 71 Indian civilian prisoners have been repatriated from Pakistan since 2014. This includes 500 Indian fishermen and 13 Indian civilian prisoners who have been repatriated from Pakistan since 2023 till date.” The biannual exchange of prisoner lists, held on January 1 and July 1 each year, is a confidence-building measure under the Indo-Pakistan agreement to ensure transparency and humanitarian cooperation.
