‘Unfortunate’ violence in Leh used to defame people’s struggle: Aga Ruhullah

PSA misused, fight for statehood to end It: MP Aga Ruhullah

Sonmarg, Sept 27: National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Saturday said the people of Ladakh are now facing the consequences of the 2019 decision that separated the region from Jammu and Kashmir, stressing that their long-standing demands deserve serious attention from the Central Government.

Speaking to reporters at Nilgrath Sonmarg, Ruhullah said Ladakhis had peacefully demanded statehood and constitutional safeguards under the 6th Schedule for the last five years, but their appeals went unheard. He said the recent violent incident in Leh was being used to tarnish their movement.

“The unfortunate episode in Leh is being misused to defame their struggle. Instead of addressing their aspirations, they are being maligned. It is unfair to brand patriots as anti-national. If they wish to rejoin Jammu and Kashmir, we are with them. If they seek 6th Schedule protections, we are equally with them. The people of Jammu and Kashmir extend full support to Ladakh,” Ruhullah said.

Turning his criticism towards New Delhi, the Central Kashmir MP said the ruling dispensation pays little heed to the voices of people. “Those in power in Delhi care nothing for the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Our demands go beyond statehood. We also want restoration of special status. When we raise these issues democratically, the least the government can do is listen,” he remarked.

Ruhullah also endorsed the recent statement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who had called for keeping the BJP away from power in the Union Territory. “It is important for us to ensure that the BJP does not come back to power in Jammu and Kashmir. People have given their mandate, and it must be respected,” he said. [KNT]

TRF narrative being pushed on social media a serious threat: LG Sinha

J&K’s innovation ecosystem transforming at school level: LG

Srinagar, Sep 27: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said that narratives pushed by groups like Terrorist Resistance Front (TRF) on social media pose a “serious threat” if ignored.

Speaking at an event at Tagore Hall in Srinagar, LG Sinha urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to stand united against terrorism and actively counter extremist propaganda to safeguard peace and stability.

He said that they have a direct connection and if such narratives are being spread on TRF’s social media and “we remain silent, it is dangerous. We must pay attention to it”.

“The fight against terrorism is not the responsibility of security forces alone but also of citizens. More than 40 lives have been lost due to terrorism, and it must be completely eradicated not just by the forces but by citizens too. I believe people must come forward,” he said.

The LG said that despite decades of suffering, J&K is witnessing a significant transformation, with stone pelting becoming “a thing of the past” and local terrorist recruitment declining. “Whenever there is a division in any family, we must try to put our house in order,” he added.

Sinha said that major changes followed after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which are an important milestone in J&K’s history.

The LG also said that steps like granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Pahari community, strengthening the Forest Rights Act, and launching Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas reflect the government’s commitment to social and economic justice.

“Now equal rights are being given to Pahari community. No one can stop this community. What is their right will be given to this community,” he added.

Sinha said that terrorism and left-wing extremism have significantly declined across the country, particularly in the northeast, and expressed confidence that Naxalism will soon be eliminated.

“J&K has suffered for a long time, and end of terrorism is necessary. Security agencies are doing their job, and we as citizens must behave responsibly and not engage in any wrong activities,” he said—(KNO)

Baramulla District Magistrate orders closure of mining near Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary

Baramulla District Magistrate orders closure of mining near Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary

Baramulla, Sept 27: The District Magistrate Baramulla has ordered the immediate closure of mining operations near Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary, citing a Supreme Court directive that prohibits mining within a one-kilometre radius of protected forests. The order came after the Wildlife Warden North Kashmir Division Sopore reported that several gypsum units in Uri and Boniyar subdivisions were operating within the prohibited zone.

In February this year, the Supreme Court ruled that mining activities in eco-sensitive zones and within one kilometre of sanctuary boundaries were illegal and must cease forthwith. Acting on this, the Baramulla administration verified the locations of local gypsum units and found that 14 such mines, including units in Dara Gutliyan, Dachina Salamabad, Bagna, Nalusa, Zamboor Patan, and Jabador, fell inside the restricted area.

The District Magistrate said the order must be implemented with immediate effect. Senior Superintendent of Police Baramulla, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Uri, Tehsildars of Uri and Boniyar, the District Mineral Officer, and officials from the Forest and Pollution Control departments have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the ban.

Authorities emphasised that the measure is intended to protect the ecological integrity of Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary and to comply fully with the Supreme Court’s judgment. While the move is expected to affect gypsum mining activities in the region, officials noted that environmental safeguards and legal compliance take precedence over commercial interests. [KNT]

Terrorists waiting at LoC launch pads, security on high alert, says BSF IG

JK: Terrorists waiting at LoC launch pads, security on high alert, says BSF IG

Srinagar, Sep 27:  A senior BSF officer here on Saturday said that terrorists were waiting at the launch pads across the Line of Control to infiltrate into the Kashmir valley, but the security forces were alert and prepared to foil any such attempts.

Speaking to reporters here, Inspector General (IG), BSF Kashmir Frontier, Ashok Yadav said increased attempts to infiltrate terrorists into the valley always remain before the onset of winter.

“There are always attempts to infiltrate before snowfall. There are still about two months, and chances of infiltration are there till November because they know they will have lesser chances for the next six months. So, they always attempt to infiltrate, but because of the alertness of the forces, it is very difficult to infiltrate,” Yadav said.

He said terrorists were waiting at the launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) for an opportunity to infiltrate into the valley.

“There is a presence of terrorists on the launch pads across the LoC opposite our AOR (area of responsibility) in the Bandipora and Kupwara sectors. They are waiting for an opportunity to infiltrate, but the security is very tight. Sometimes they wait for inclement weather to make a move. So, the attempts are always there, but we are prepared and alert for any eventuality,” he added.

Yadav said the Army and the BSF were alert and dominating the LoC very well with the help of the hi-tech surveillance equipment.

“Along with the army, we are dominating the LC very well. The security forces foiled two infiltration attempts so far this year. It is very difficult to infiltrate our AOR because of the alertness with which we perform our duties and the new methodology and new surveillance equipment that we have,” the IG BSF added.

India lampoons Sharif’s ‘victory’ claims; declares won’t bow to Pak’s Nuclear blackmail

India lampoons Sharif’s ‘victory' claims; declares won’t bow to Pak's Nuclear blackmail

United Nations, Sep 27: For Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif devastated air force bases must be a sign of victory and he can “enjoy” it, India has said lampooning his claims of winning the war against Bharat. But it also put him on notice that it won’t give in to Nuclear blackmail and will go after terrorists and their sponsors.

“If destroyed runways and burnt-out hangers look like victory, as the Prime Minister claimed, Pakistan is welcome to enjoy it”, Petal Gahlot, a first secretary at India’s UN Mission said at the General Assembly, ridiculing Sharif’s claim, “We have won the war”.

Exercising the right of reply to his “absurd theatrics” during his speech in the morning, she ripped his claims about the war and the accusations he flung against India while declaring India’s zero tolerance for terrorism.

“Where terrorism is concerned, we are making it clear that there will be no distinction between the terrorists and their sponsors”, she said. “Both will be held accountable”.

“Nor will we allow terrorism to be practised under the cover of Nuclear blackmail. India will never bow to such threats”, she said.

She declared, “India’s message to the world is clear; there must be zero-tolerance for terrorism”.

She said that terrorism is “central” to Pakistan’s foreign policy and the recent events again showed that Islamabad glorifies terrorism, and sponsors and protects terrorists.

“No degree of drama and no level of lies can conceal the facts”, she said. Pakistan “again glorified terrorism that is so central to their foreign policy”, she said.

Its role as a state sponsor of terrorism was again exposed when it shielded at the Security Council on April 25, the “Pakistani sponsored terror outfit”, The Resistance Front (TRF), “from the responsibility of carrying out the barbaric massacre of tourists in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir”, she said.

TRF itself had shamelessly claimed it carried out the attack killing 26 Hindu and Christian tourists at Pahalgam.

On ending the conflict between the two countries in May, Gahlot said, Sharif “advanced a bizarre account”.

“The record on this matter is clear”, she said, throwing a challenge to go look at the pictures of where the devastation happened.

“Till 9 May, Pakistan was threatening more attacks on India. But on 10 May, its military pleaded with us directly for a cessation to the fighting”, she said.

“The intervening event was the destruction caused to multiple Pakistani airbases by Indian forces. The pictures of that damage are, of course, publicly accessible”.

Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations Major General Kashif Abdullah, called his Indian counterpart, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, and asked for a ceasefire.

Defending Operation Sindoor that India launched to smash the dens of terror inside Pakistan, Gahlot said, “The truth is that as in the past, Pakistan is responsible for a terrorist attack on innocent civilians in India. We have exercised the right to defend our people against such actions and have brought the organisers and perpetrators to justice”.

About Pakistan trying to deflect Operation Sindoor away from its terrorist links, Gahlot said, “A country long steeped in the tradition of deploying and exporting terrorism has no shame in advancing the most ludicrous narratives to that end”.

“A picture speaks a thousand words, and we saw many pictures of terrorists slain in Bahawalpur and Muridke terror complexes by Indian forces during Operation Sindoor”, she said.

She asked, “When senior Pakistani military and civilian officials publicly glorify and pay homage to such notorious terrorists, can there be any doubt about the proclivities of this regime”?

“Its ministers have just recently acknowledged that they have been operating terrorist camps for decades”, Gahlot said. “It should come as no surprise that once again, this duplicity continues, this time at the level of its Prime Minister”.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif made the admission in an interview to Britain’s Sky News channel in April.

Sharif dragging in US President in his speech and claiming he “facilitated” the ceasefire also came in for a rebuttal.

Gahlot said, “India and Pakistan have long agreed that any outstanding issue between them will be addressed bilaterally. There is no room for any third party in that regard. This is our longstanding national position”.

Three held in Central Kashmir for circulating fake currency, police recover FICNs

Seven hardcore criminals held with weapons in Samba: Police

Magam, Sep 27: Police in Magam have apprehended three individuals, including two students, for their alleged involvement in circulating fake Indian currency notes (FICN). Officials confirmed that the arrests were made during a routine operation following credible inputs about suspicious monetary dealings in the area.

According to police sources, the accused have been identified as Bashrat Bashir Rather, a 17-year-old student from Archander Hama in Budgam; Mohammad Shafie Ganaie, 37, from Mazhama Magam in Budgam; and Abid Manzoor, 17, a higher secondary student from Kawoosa Khalisa.

Police said that fake notes amounting to 27,500 rupees were recovered from the possession of Bashrat Bashir Rather, while counterfeit currency worth 5,500 rupees was seized from Abid Manzoor. The total recovery from the operation amounted to 33,000 rupees in fake notes.

A senior police officer in Magam stated that further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the counterfeit currency and whether the arrested individuals were part of a larger network. “We are probing how the notes reached them and whether more people are involved in the circulation racket,” the officer said.

The arrest of two students has sparked concern among locals, who urged authorities to raise awareness among the youth about the serious consequences of engaging in such illegal activities. Locals said the easy availability of counterfeit notes not only damages the economy but also risks drawing impressionable youth into criminal networks.

Police have registered a case at Police Station Magam and further questioning of the accused is in progress. Officials added that strict action will be taken against those found guilty of spreading counterfeit currency in the district. [KNT]

In trade talks with US, India pushes for less than 20 per cent tariff rate: Sources

0
Impact of Trump tariff on Indian businesses: An explainer

Washington, Sep 27: As India and the United States agreed to continue trade negotiations, sources told IANS that New Delhi is pressing for a tariff rate below 20 per cent.

The push for tariffs below 20 per cent is viewed as vital to safeguarding India’s competitiveness, given that other South and Southeast Asian nations face US tariff rates between 15–20 per cent.

Sources added that New Delhi is also pressing for the removal of the additional 25 per cent tariff on Russian oil purchases, aligning with the Trump administration’s view that European nations should curb their imports as well and reiterating that India should not be singled out.

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar, in his speech at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Thursday, highlighted “double standards” over access to energy and food supplies.

“The costs to the Global South in terms of energy, food and fertiliser security were starkly demonstrated by ongoing conflicts, particularly in Ukraine and Gaza. Apart from jeopardising supplies and logistics, access and costing themselves, these became pressure points on nations. Double standards are clearly in evidence,” he added.

Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday in New York. After the talks, Rubio said that India is of “critical” value to his country and welcomed the ongoing interaction in trade.

Jaishankar also posted on X, “Our conversation covered a range of bilateral and international issues of current concern. Agreed on the importance of sustained engagement to progress on priority areas”.

On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer were also part of the discussions.

“In the meeting, the External Affairs Minister and Secretary of State were joined by the Commerce and Industry Minister from our side, and the United States Trade Representative (USTR) from the American side. We also had several officials participating in that meeting. The focus of the discussion was on trade and tariffs. Other aspects of the bilateral relationship were also discussed,” said Jaiswal while addressing a weekly media briefing in New Delhi.

A statement by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry also said that the Indian delegation had “constructive meetings” with the US government on various aspects of the deal.

“Both sides exchanged views on possible contours of the deal and it was decided to continue the engagements with a view to achieve early conclusion of a mutually beneficial Trade Agreement,” it added.

A day after the meeting with Jaishankar, Rubio indicated that the Trump administration may be willing to ‘fix’ the additional 25 per cent tariffs imposed on India over its purchases of Russian oil.

In an interview with NBC News, Rubio spoke about the US measures to end the conflict in Ukraine and hoped its additional tariffs against India could be fixed.

“We have already seen the measures we have taken with regards to India, although that’s something we hope we can fix,” he said.

Rubio blamed the European countries for not “doing enough” to end the conflict in Ukraine.

The MEA spokesperson also reiterated India’s stand on the purchase of Russian energy, saying that “there cannot be any double standard in the matter” and highlighted the Trump administration’s statements that called on the EU, NATO and G7 countries to stop buying Russian oil and gas.

Trump says ‘we have a deal on Gaza’ as Israeli PM vows to ‘finish the job’

Trump says ‘we have a deal on Gaza’ as Israeli PM vows to ‘finish the job’

Washington, Sep 26: US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that the United States may be close to a deal on ending the war in Gaza.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said it’s “looking like we have a deal on Gaza.”

“I think it’s a deal that will get the hostages back. It’s going to be a deal that will end the war. It’s going to be peace,” he added.

Trump on Thursday also said that he won’t allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to annex the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

“I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. It’s not going to happen,” he said.

According to the US media, Trump’s peace plan on Gaza includes the release of all hostages, a permanent ceasefire, gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the strip, a governing structure without involvement of Hamas and the deployment of international forces to manage security.

Trump’s statement comes as Israeli PM, in his speech at the UN General Assembly on Friday, warned that his country would “finish the job” against Hamas in Gaza unless it laid down arms and released the remaining hostages taken in the attack on Israel in 2023, in which more than 1,200 people were killed.

“Free the hostages now,” Netanyahu told Hamas from the podium. “If you do, you will live. If you don’t, Israel will hunt you down,” he threatened.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday held a multilateral meeting on Gaza with a select group of leaders of Muslim countries, including Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings in New York.

The meeting was attended by leaders of Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, the UAE and Jordan.

During his address at the UNGA, Trump squarely blamed Hamas for rejecting the “reasonable offers” to make peace and criticised countries that have recently recognised a Palestinian state.

“We can’t forget October 7. As if to encourage continued conflict, some of this body is seeking to unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state. The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists for their atrocities. Those who want peace should be united with one message: release the hostages now. Just release the hostages now,” he added.

GDA takes over Gulmarg’s Hotel Royal Park after Govt denies rent agreement extension

Baramulla, Sep 26: The authorities have taken back the possession of the hotel Royal Park Gulmarg after its rent agreement expired in June this year.

The hotel Royal Park Gulmarg is the property of Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) and was rented to a local businessman around two decades back.

An official said that the after the rent agreement period expired on June this year, the renter of this property was denied further extension by the government and subsequently the property was taken back. “The hotel will be handed over back to the Gulmarg Development Authority,” said an official.  The move is considered as an attempt to reclaim the GDA owned properties which had been earlier rented out and whose rent agreement has expired and could not be extended further. Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir Government took possession of the 137 year old iconic property Hotel Nedous  for occupying over 98 kanals of state land after its lease agreement expired in 1985.

Pak ready for dialogue with India: PM Sharif in UNGA

Pak ready for dialogue with India: PM Sharif in UNGA

United Nations, Sep 26: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said his country was ready for a “composite, comprehensive and result-oriented” dialogue with India on all outstanding issues, as he criticised New Delhi over the situation in Kashmir. In his address to the General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Sharif also referred to the ‘Operation Sindoor’ and claimed that “seven of the Indian jets” were damaged during the four-day conflict in May. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh last month said Indian jets shot down five Pakistani fighter jets and a large aircraft during ‘Operation Sindoor’.

India targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir during the operation launched on May 7 in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. Sharif said Pakistan believes in the “peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.”

“This is my most sincere and serious offer before this august assembly of the world nations. Pakistan stands ready for a composite, comprehensive and result-oriented dialogue with India on all outstanding issues,” he said. The composite dialogue was launched in 2003 when General Pervez Musharraf was ruling Pakistan. It had eight baskets of components, containing all contentious issues between the two countries. The dialogue was derailed after the 2008 Mumbai attacks and not restored in proper form. In his address, Sharif praised US President Donald Trump, saying his “efforts for peace helped avert a … war in South Asia”.
