Trump says ‘we have a deal on Gaza’ as Israeli PM vows to ‘finish the job’

Trump says ‘we have a deal on Gaza’ as Israeli PM vows to ‘finish the job’

Washington, Sep 26: US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that the United States may be close to a deal on ending the war in Gaza.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said it’s “looking like we have a deal on Gaza.”

“I think it’s a deal that will get the hostages back. It’s going to be a deal that will end the war. It’s going to be peace,” he added.

Trump on Thursday also said that he won’t allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to annex the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

“I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. It’s not going to happen,” he said.

According to the US media, Trump’s peace plan on Gaza includes the release of all hostages, a permanent ceasefire, gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the strip, a governing structure without involvement of Hamas and the deployment of international forces to manage security.

Trump’s statement comes as Israeli PM, in his speech at the UN General Assembly on Friday, warned that his country would “finish the job” against Hamas in Gaza unless it laid down arms and released the remaining hostages taken in the attack on Israel in 2023, in which more than 1,200 people were killed.

“Free the hostages now,” Netanyahu told Hamas from the podium. “If you do, you will live. If you don’t, Israel will hunt you down,” he threatened.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday held a multilateral meeting on Gaza with a select group of leaders of Muslim countries, including Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings in New York.

The meeting was attended by leaders of Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, the UAE and Jordan.

During his address at the UNGA, Trump squarely blamed Hamas for rejecting the “reasonable offers” to make peace and criticised countries that have recently recognised a Palestinian state.

“We can’t forget October 7. As if to encourage continued conflict, some of this body is seeking to unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state. The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists for their atrocities. Those who want peace should be united with one message: release the hostages now. Just release the hostages now,” he added.

GDA takes over Gulmarg’s Hotel Royal Park after Govt denies rent agreement extension

Baramulla, Sep 26: The authorities have taken back the possession of the hotel Royal Park Gulmarg after its rent agreement expired in June this year.

The hotel Royal Park Gulmarg is the property of Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) and was rented to a local businessman around two decades back.

An official said that the after the rent agreement period expired on June this year, the renter of this property was denied further extension by the government and subsequently the property was taken back. “The hotel will be handed over back to the Gulmarg Development Authority,” said an official.  The move is considered as an attempt to reclaim the GDA owned properties which had been earlier rented out and whose rent agreement has expired and could not be extended further. Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir Government took possession of the 137 year old iconic property Hotel Nedous  for occupying over 98 kanals of state land after its lease agreement expired in 1985.

Pak ready for dialogue with India: PM Sharif in UNGA

United Nations, Sep 26: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said his country was ready for a “composite, comprehensive and result-oriented” dialogue with India on all outstanding issues, as he criticised New Delhi over the situation in Kashmir. In his address to the General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Sharif also referred to the ‘Operation Sindoor’ and claimed that “seven of the Indian jets” were damaged during the four-day conflict in May. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh last month said Indian jets shot down five Pakistani fighter jets and a large aircraft during ‘Operation Sindoor’.

India targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir during the operation launched on May 7 in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. Sharif said Pakistan believes in the “peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.”

“This is my most sincere and serious offer before this august assembly of the world nations. Pakistan stands ready for a composite, comprehensive and result-oriented dialogue with India on all outstanding issues,” he said. The composite dialogue was launched in 2003 when General Pervez Musharraf was ruling Pakistan. It had eight baskets of components, containing all contentious issues between the two countries. The dialogue was derailed after the 2008 Mumbai attacks and not restored in proper form. In his address, Sharif praised US President Donald Trump, saying his “efforts for peace helped avert a … war in South Asia”.

High Court adjourns MLA nomination case to Oct 16

Recourse to PSA unconstitutional if penal code provisions sufficient: J&K HC in drug peddling case

Jammu, Sep 26: High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh Friday adjourned the MLA nomination case to October 16 for hearing, acceding to the request of the petitioner due to non-availability of his (petitioner’s) senior counsel.  Petitioner Ravinder Sharma, former MLC and chief spokesperson of JKPCC, has challenged the powers of nomination of five MLAs to J&K Assembly by the Lieutenant Governor and the constitutionality of these provisions of nominations in the J&K Reorganisation Act.

Today, September 26, 2025, the case came up before the Division Bench of the High Court, comprising Justice Sanjeev Kumar and Justice Rajesh Sekhri, with a written request for short adjournment, in view of the non-availability of senior Supreme Court lawyer Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the petitioner.

While allowing the request of the petitioner, represented by advocate D K Khajuria along with petitioner (Sharma) in person, the Court fixed October 16 as the next date for hearing. Ravinder Sharma, himself, is an advocate. Vishal Sharma Deputy Solicitor General of India (DSGI), counsel for Government of India and advocate S S Ahmed for intervenor Ravinder Singh also appeared in the case.

The PIL, challenging the provisions of Section 15, 15-A and 15-B, as inserted in the J&K Reorganisation Act, vide amendment dated December 15, 2023, authorising the Lieutenant Governor to nominate five MLAs, beyond the sanctioned strength of the J&K UT Assembly, was filed by Ravinder Sharma in October last year in the J&K High Court.

The special Division Bench of High Court admitted the matter after detailed hearing of both sides and framed an important question of law, which read – “Whether Sections 15, 15-A and 15-B of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act 2019, making provision for nominating the members of Legislative Assembly over and above the sanctioned strength of the Legislative Assembly and which have the potential of converting the minority government into a majority government and vice versa, is ultra vires the constitution, being in violation of basic structure of the constitution.” The Government of India (respondent) filed its reply on the last date of hearing, defending the provisions and powers vested in the Lieutenant Governor of UT to nominate 5 members to the J&K Assembly.

Month after 2 dozen cattle strayed across LoC, Gurez villagers seek return

Bandipora, Sep 26: More than a dozen families in Gurez villages, near LoC of north Kashmir’s Bandipora are seeking government help in bringing back their cattle, which include yaks, who they say have crossed over to LoC to the other side a month ago.

The villagers from Achoora and Choorwan in Gurez, which is close to the LoC, in an appeal have requested both the governments to expedite the return. The villagers said the majority of the cattle have crossed the LoC towards Neelam Valley in Pakistan Occupied  Kashmir a month ago. “We appeal to both the countries to help us get our cattle back,” they said.

While talking to local police, they said, “There are claims made by the locals and we are working in coordination with the army.” The official said almost twenty cattle, villagers are claiming, have gone to the other side. “Almost from each household a cattle is missing. The locals are adamant they have crossed to the other side,” SHO Gurez, Nazir Ahmad, told Greater Kashmir on Friday.

The police figures suggest 19 or more cattle are missing. An official said they were at the army post near LoC on Friday too to find the solutions to the issue.

Abdul Wahab Lone, a resident of Choorwan, said about all families in Choorwan and some in Achoora have lost an animal by crossing over LoC.

His brother, Ghulam Qadir Lone, has two cattle missing, including a yak, locally called “Zomba” which are most reared by villagers and has cost him sixtey thousand rupees, he said. He said almost thirty cattle are on the other side.

Lone said the cattle were for grazing in the upper reaches, but crossed to the other side near Indian Army’s Ranjeet Post, where locals are not allowed, and have gone further downhill. Wahab said local officials had expressed helplessness, but the army had suggested locals to assemble near the LoC and make announcements via megaphones in coming days.

In a video appeal too on Thursday, locals sought help with the return. For the residents in Gurez, the cattle are an important source of their livelihood and to help their return they say is crucial.

Notably in July, 2021, same issue emerged from Badu-Aab village of Tulail in Gurez, when almost 29 yaks crossed the LoC. They were later repatriated with help from officials of both the sides, a week later.

Veteran journalist M L Kotru passes away

0

New Delhi, Sep 26: Veteran journalist and former Editor of The Statesman, M L Kotru, passed away on September 25 at the age of 91.

He leaves behind a rich legacy of fearless reporting, editorial integrity, and unforgettable anecdotes.

Widely regarded as a doyen of Indian journalism, Kotru combined rigorous professionalism for six decades with a deep affection for Kashmir, a land he revisited often and wrote about with empathy and insight.

Editor-in-Chief of Greater Kashmir, Fayaz Kaloo, remembered Kotru with deep affection, recalling both his warmth and his invaluable contributions to journalism.

“After Khawaja Sanaullah Bhat Sahab, Kotru Sahab stood by us as a true well-wisher, extending moral and professional support. He was more than a colleague. He was a friend, a guide, and a constant source of wisdom, generously sharing his vast experiences of journalism and always ready to help. His opinion pieces in Greater Kashmir used to be very realistic. We at Greater Kashmir will profoundly feel his absence,” he said.

Kotru served as the News Editor of The Statesman in Delhi and was also the India correspondent for The Sunday Times of London.

His published works include The Kashmir Story (1994) and Asia ’72: Official Guide (co-authored with Benoy Sarkar).

A familiar presence at the Press Club of India, where he was its 45th member and later Secretary General, Kotru often reminisced about its “heydays,” recalling interactions with legends of Indian journalism.

Celebrated Kashmiri artist Veer Munshi mourned Kotru’s passing with a heartfelt tribute, “Alvida, Kotru Saab – former Editor of The Statesman, a great friend, my neighbour both at the Media Centre in Gurgaon and in Shital Nath, Srinagar. A man who lived life on his own terms till his last day, at 91. I will forever cherish your stories and incredible anecdotes, treasures to remember for all time.”

Munshi also sketched a portrait of Kotru, symbolising the affection and respect he commanded beyond newsrooms.

Senior Kashmiri journalist Mohammad Sayeed Malik described him as both colleague and mentor, “Master of the craft, M L Kotru is no more. A lovable person and a towering colleague, Kotru Sahab leaves behind a rich professional legacy.”

Another veteran journalist, Bansi Raina, remembered Kotru’s frequent visits to Srinagar, “Even though his base was Delhi, he was regularly in Srinagar during his active service. A great Editor with great analytical and investigative skills, he was a very popular figure pre-1990 and had friends all around, from all cross sections. Rest in peace.”

Tributes poured in from cultural figures as well.

Indian Air Force officer and writer Sqn Ldr Anil Sehgal wrote, “A real grand old man of the journalistic world! And what a man! I have very fond memories of him. Sadgati, respected Kotru saheb…”

Businessman Pervez Bakshi said, “Another good friend left us. M L Kotru is no more. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Filmmaker Mushtaq Bala described Kotru’s passing as a deep loss to journalism and remembered him as approachable, insightful, and always encouraging to younger colleagues.

Colleagues recalled that during the tumultuous 1990s, Kotru frequently visited Kashmir, interacting with local journalists and reporting with honesty and courage.

His contributions to Greater Kashmir offered sharp, uncompromising analyses of political and social developments.

Even in his later years, he remained candid about the decline of newsroom culture and told Mint, “The culture has changed and honesty has disappeared from this place.”

Kotru’s career spanned nearly six decades, during which he mentored generations of journalists.

In 1959, he received the Watumull Award, instituted by the Watumull Foundation in Hawaii, for his evocative series of articles ‘The Other Side’, published in The Statesman.

The Press Club of India, in a message on X, said, “Deeply saddened at the demise of veteran journalist and former Editor of The Statesman, M L Kotru. During his nearly six-decade-long stint in media, Kotru mentored generations of journalists. His passing away is an irreparable loss to journalism. We pay our heartfelt tributes to him.”

A prayer meeting would be held in memory of Kotru on Sunday, September 28, at Yagyashala (2nd Floor), Arya Samaj Mandir, Greater Kailash Part 1, New Delhi, from 11 am to 12 noon.
