Gh Hassan Mir questions Farooq Abdullah’s remarks on Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 25: Apni Party leader Gh Hassan Mir has questioned whether ordinary Kashmiris enjoy the same freedom of expression as influential political leaders, referring to Dr Farooq Abdullah’s statement thanking Pakistan for raising the Kashmir issue at international forums.

In a statement, Mir urged people to reflect on the difference between the freedom enjoyed by prominent political figures and the risks ordinary citizens may face for expressing similar views.

“Are the rules really the same for everyone?” he asked, questioning whether an ordinary Kashmiri making similar remarks would enjoy the same freedom to speak or face police action, legal proceedings or detention under laws such as the Public Safety Act (PSA) or the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Mir said Dr Farooq Sahib and other influential leaders could make controversial statements, while ordinary Kashmiris might fear the consequences of expressing similar opinions.

“Is this equal freedom, or a privilege reserved for a select few?” he asked, stressing that every citizen deserved equal protection under the law.

Calling for equal treatment, Mir said democracy must ensure equal rights, freedom and justice for all citizens, irrespective of their position or influence.
