Ganderbal, Aug 02: Heavy spell of rainfall across central Kashmir on Sunday morning triggered a sudden flash flood in the Safapora area of Ganderbal district, leading to a sharp rise in local water bodies and sparking widespread panic among residents.
According to locals, a spell of heavy downpour early in the day and a possible cloudburst in upper belt resulted in a flood-like situation, causing water levels in local streams and drainage channels to overflow rapidly. The sudden surge of muddy water inundated low-lying sections and local tracks in the area, temporarily disrupting normal routine.
Officials said flashfloods in Safapora led to a sudden surge of floodwaters, inundating several houses and creating panic among residents. The flash floods affected multiple residential pockets, forcing people to rush to safety as water entered their homes.
The worst-hit localities in Safapora included Kohistan Colony, Gulab Sheikh Colony and Bakshi Mohalla, where floodwaters entered residential houses following intense rainfall, causing damage to household belongings and affecting daily life.
Meanwhile, incessant rainfall also resulted in extensive waterlogging in Alasteng Busserbugh, where several houses were submerged after rainwater accumulated in low-lying areas, leaving residents facing considerable hardship.
locals said that the Flashfloods entered several residential houses and damaged a large agriculture fields besides standing crops in the area. The incident in Safapora comes amid a wider spell of active monsoon weather across Jammu and Kashmir.
