IIM Jammu, NASSCOM, J&K govt to host GCC summit to unlock region’s investment potential

Jammu, Oct 8: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir government and NASSCOM as knowledge partner, will host a two-day J&K global capability centres summit to position the Union Territory as an emerging destination for GCCs.

The summit, to be held at IIM Jammu on October 9-10 under the theme “Unlocking J&K’s GCC Potential for Building Growth Ecosystem & Catalyzing Investment”, will bring together over 300 delegates, including global industry leaders, policymakers, investors, academicians and representatives of the technology and GCC ecosystem, officials said.

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, IIM Jammu Director Prof B S Sahay, NASSCOM President Rajesh Nambiar and senior officials and industry leaders will participate in the summit, they said.

Addressing a press conference here ahead of the event, Sahay said the summit was aimed at creating awareness about Jammu and Kashmir’s potential as a GCC destination, and facilitating meaningful engagement between industry and the government.

“This is not an investment summit. It is an effort to create awareness about the potential of Jammu and Kashmir as a GCC destination and facilitate meaningful engagement between the government and industry,” he said.

Sahay said around 45 companies and more than 55 industry leaders would participate in the two-day event, adding that IIM Jammu was working closely with the government in policy formulation, capacity building and industry engagement.

He said four policies developed through the Centre for Innovation and Transformation in Governance (CiTaG), IIM Jammu, including Mission YUVA, had been accepted, while the institute was also facilitating public-private partnership projects and capacity-building programmes for government officials.

The GCC ecosystem, he said, could create employment opportunities in a range of knowledge and service-based sectors, while institutions such as IIM Jammu and IIT Jammu could play a key role in developing the skilled manpower required by industry.

Kumar Rajeev Ranjan, Secretary, Labour and Employment Department, said the GCC model could provide Jammu and Kashmir with new avenues for employment, particularly in white-collar and knowledge-based sectors.

He said the government alone could not be the sole source of employment for the growing pool of educated and skilled youth and stressed the need to create a strong local talent pool aligned with emerging industry requirements. GCCs could generate direct as well as indirect employment and create a wider ecosystem of supporting services and businesses, Ranjan said.

Prof Jabir Ali, Dean, Faculty and Research, IIM Jammu, said the summit would strengthen industry-academia-government collaboration and create opportunities for research, innovation, knowledge exchange and talent development.

Dr Sandeep Ananthanarayanan, CEO, CiTaG, IIM Jammu, said the summit would connect technology, innovation and governance perspectives with industry and policy priorities to develop an actionable pathway for J&K as a competitive GCC destination.

The summit will deliberate on policy, investment, infrastructure, technology, employment and talent development, besides examining successful GCC models adopted by other states. The first day will feature panels on industry-government collaboration, India’s GCC growth story and investment, employment and economic growth in J&K, while the second day will focus on technology, talent and workforce transformation and a roadmap for making J&K the next GCC destination.

The discussions will examine issues such as infrastructure, incentives, approvals, connectivity, digital capabilities, skilling, industry-aligned curricula, research and development and policy stability.

The organisers said the summit is also expected to facilitate tangible outcomes, including memoranda of understanding, anchor investment commitments and employment proposals.

The event will also showcase Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural heritage through a programme titled “Colors of Jammu” by Padma Shri Balwant Thakur.
