Jammu, May 18: The Indian Army Sunday asserted that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan would continue as there was no expiry date to the continuation of the break in hostilities, as decided in DGMOs interaction of May 12, 2025.
It also made it clear that no talks were scheduled between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The Army was reacting to media reports speculating that the agreement reached between DGMOs of India and Pakistan vis-‡-vis complete cessation of fire and military action on land and in the air and sea on May 10, 2025, and reiterated on May 12, 2025, was ending on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
Some media houses are reporting that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan is ending today. In addition, queries are also being received if DGMO level talk is scheduled today. The response – No DGMO talks are scheduled today, the Army said in a brief statement on Sunday.
As far as the continuation of the break in hostilities, as decided in DGMOs interaction of May 12 are concerned, there is no expiry date to it, the Army statement said.
Officially, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri first broke this news related to the ceasefire agreement between DGMOs on May 10, 2025 at 5:30 pm in a brief news conference in the union capital.
According to Misri, the DGMO of Pakistan called the DGMO of India at 3:35 pm on May 10 and that it was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 5 pm on May 10, 2025.
Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding, Misri had said, while announcing that the DGMOs would talk again on May 12, 2025.
Intriguingly a few hours after this announcement, Pakistan violated ceasefire again on May 10 evening in J&K and several other areas on and along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB), all along the western border of the country.
Misri, at around 11:30 pm on May 10, 2025, in a special briefing, flagged the blatant breach of understandingî just hours ago.
For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding reached earlier this evening between the DGMOs of India and Pakistan. This is a breach of the understanding reached earlier today. The armed forces are giving an adequate and appropriate response to these violations and we take very serious notice of these violations, Misri had said.
In the same breath, India called upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with seriousness and responsibility.î
Though Misri said that the armed forces were maintaining a strong vision on the situation yet he minced no words saying that they were directed to give a strong response to such violations.
ìThey have been given instructions to deal strongly with any instances of repetition of the violations of the border, along the IB as well as the LoC, Misri had said.
It was reiterated by the Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi also the next day while reviewing the situation along with the Army Commanders.
On May 12, 2025, during the talks between DGMOs, the issues related to ìcontinuing the commitment that both sides must not fire a single shot or initiate any aggressive and inimical action against each otherî were discussed.
It was also agreed that both sides consider immediate measures to ensure troop reduction from the borders and forward areas.
This was followed by another brief interaction between the DGMOs of the two countries on May 15 evening.
Therein further to the understanding between the two DGMOs on May 10, 2025, it was decided ìto continue the Confidence Building Measures to reduce the alertness level.
