Shopian, Aug 1: At least five houses were inundated after intense overnight showers triggered flash flooding in Pehlipora village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district early on Saturday, officials and residents said.
The heavy rainfall lashed the village at around 5 a.m., sending a surge of water through residential areas and damaging household belongings.
Sheeraz Ahmad, a resident of the village, said floodwater entered at least five houses, forcing families to rush to safety.
“Water entered a few homes within minutes after the intense rainfall. Household goods were damaged, but fortunately all the families were evacuated safely,” Ahmad said.
He said that rainwater also entered a local school.
Residents said the streets were submerged as water gushed through the village, disrupting normal life.
“The entire locality was flooded. Water was flowing through the streets, making it difficult for people to move out of their homes,” another resident said.
Teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police and the district administration reached the village shortly after the incident and evacuated the affected families to safer locations, residents said.
Officials said an assessment of the damage was underway. There were no reports of casualties or injuries.
The incident followed a night of intense rainfall across parts of south Kashmir, raising water levels in local streams and drainage channels. Authorities have advised residents living in vulnerable areas to remain alert as intermittent rain is forecast to continue.
Intense rainfall over a short period triggered flash floods and landslides in Kashmir over the last three weeks, damaging homes, roads and agricultural land.
Officials from the local administration said they were monitoring the situation and would provide all assistance to the affected families.
