Srinagar, Sep 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was adjourned on Monday and will reconvene on Tuesday morning after proceedings were disrupted amid heated exchanges between members.
The House witnessed repeated interruptions during Question Hour as BJP legislators raised slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram”, prompting reactions from members of the treasury and opposition benches.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather had earlier asked the BJP members to return to their seats and allow the proceedings to continue.
“Go back to your seats and allow the House to continue with proceedings. Don’t force me to take action against you,” the Speaker warned.
Amid the ruckus, Gurez MLA Nazir Ahmad Gurezi urged the Speaker to continue with Question Hour, accusing the BJP members of deliberately trying to waste the time of the House.
“None of you will be in the House after the next election. You ruined this State,” Gurezi told the protesting BJP legislators.
The situation further escalated after CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami asked the BJP members to raise another slogan, “Statehood ko restore karo,” following which BJP legislators objected and entered into a heated exchange with him.
The commotion also involved Langate MLA Sheikh Khursheed, while senior National Conference leader and Khanyar MLA Ali Mohammad Sagar stood up and raised slogans against the BJP members.
The Question Hour was disrupted amid the exchanges as the Speaker attempted to restore order.
The autumn session had begun earlier on Monday with Speaker Rather appealing to legislators to ensure smooth proceedings and utilise the limited time of the short session judiciously.
The Assembly will now reconvene on Tuesday morning, with legislative business and discussions scheduled to continue as per the listed agenda.
