Juvenile among 4 booked for sale of Chinese kite string in Jammu

Jammu, Aug 21: Police in Jammu apprehended four accused, including a juvenile and seized around 100 rolls of banned Chinese kite string (Gattu Dor) from their possession in two separate operations on Friday.

In an operation launched as a part of its sustained drive against the sale, storage and use of banned and hazardous Chinese plastic manja (Gattu), a team of Police Post Narwal, acting on reliable information, apprehended one juvenile (name withheld).

During the course of the investigation, 70 rolls of banned “Gattu Dor” were recovered and seized from his vehicle.

The sale, storage and use of Chinese Manja have been prohibited by the competent authorities in view of the serious threat posed by the hazardous synthetic-thread to public safety.

Its sharp and non-biodegradable nature can cause grievous injuries and fatalities to pedestrians, two-wheeler riders and children, besides posing a significant threat to birds and other animals.

Accordingly, FIR numbers 259/2026 under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were registered at Police Station Bahu Fort and investigation was taken up.

In another operation, a team of Police Post Chinore arrested three persons and recovered 28 rolls of banned kite-string from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Taksham Jawalia, son of Joginder Lal, resident of Patoli Brahmana; Shubham Gupta, son of Narayan Gupta, resident of Machine Domana and Sahil Kumar, son of Rakesh Kumar, resident of Patoli Brahmana, Jammu.

“Acting on reliable information regarding the illegal sale of banned Chinese gattu thread near Grand Taj Resort, Bantalab, Police intercepted the motorcycle, bearing registration number JK02BF-5380, on which the accused were riding and recovered 28 rolls,” Police said.

In this connection, FIR number 178/2026 U/S 223 BNS was registered at Police Station Domana. Further investigation was underway.

Similar operations were being undertaken in different parts of Jammu, including Moti Bazar and Pacca Danga areas.

Police, while reiterating commitment to safeguard public safety and maintain strict enforcement against the sale, storage, transportation and use of banned Chinese Manja, warned of strict legal action against anyone found violating the prohibitory orders.

People were also requested to cooperate with the Police and promptly report any information regarding the sale, storage or use of banned kite thread to the nearest police station.
