Livasa Hospitals organised a media interaction in Srinagar on “Newer Frontiers in Interventional Cardiology”, highlighting advances in minimally invasive cardiac procedures and their potential role in treating complex and high-risk heart conditions.
The interaction was led by Dr Harinder K Bali, Chairman, Cardiac Sciences, Livasa Hospitals, who discussed developments in interventional cardiology, including newer techniques and technologies being used in the management of complex cardiovascular diseases.
Dr Bali, who has more than 38 years of experience and has performed over 20,000 coronary interventions as primary operator, also spoke about the development of primary angioplasty for the treatment of acute heart attacks.
The discussion covered a range of advanced procedures, including primary angioplasty, complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), CHIP interventions, TAVI/TAVR, cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT-P and CRT-D), ICD implantation, carotid artery stenting, subclavian artery angioplasty and stenting, aortic stenting, peripheral arterial angioplasty and stenting, below-knee interventions and endovascular stent grafting for selected aortic aneurysms and dissections.
Dr Bali also discussed Impella-supported high-risk coronary interventions and the role of advanced interventions in appropriately selected patients.
He emphasised that treatment decisions need to be individualised, particularly in patients with complex coronary artery disease, previous bypass surgery, advanced age, heart failure and multiple other medical conditions.
He said advances in interventional cardiology should not be viewed as replacing cardiac surgery in every case, but as expanding the treatment options available to patients after appropriate clinical evaluation.
Anurag Yadav, CEO, Livasa Hospitals, said the rapid evolution of cardiac sciences was expanding treatment possibilities for patients with complex heart conditions. He said Dr Bali’s experience in complex interventional cardiology added to the clinical expertise available within the hospital’s cardiac programme.
Dr Abhishek Garg, Facility Director, Livasa Hospital Mohali, said advances in interventional cardiology had made several minimally invasive procedures possible for appropriately selected patients. He stressed the importance of multidisciplinary “heart-team” evaluation in deciding whether a patient should undergo an intervention, surgery or a combination of approaches.
