Ramban, Aug 04: A major tragedy was averted on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) near Chanderkoot in Ramban district on Tuesday after the tyre of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker suddenly caught fire while it was on its way from Jammu to Srinagar.
According to officials and eyewitnesses, flames erupted from one of the tanker’s tyres, triggering panic among commuters on the busy highway. Locals immediately rushed to the spot and alerted the authorities.
Personnel of the CRPF and the Fire and Emergency Services swiftly responded to the incident and launched a firefighting operation. The blaze was brought under control before it could spread to the gas-filled tanker, averting what could have been a major disaster.
Traffic on the highway was briefly affected during the operation, but normal movement was restored after the fire was completely extinguished.
Officials said the timely response of local residents, CRPF personnel, and firefighters prevented any loss of life or property. The exact cause of the fire is being investigated, though it is suspected to have originated from overheating of the tyre.
