Srinagar, Sep 27: Baramulla town is likely to host mega MLA cup in October month this year to engage youth with Sporting activities.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, MLA Baramulla said the people in Baramulla constituency have demanded to start the event to engage the youth in sports activities.
“It is a good initiative if the people have so much of interest in sports. I have given my nod to organise the MLA cup in Baramulla. We will organise it as early as possible,” MLA Baramulla told Greater Kashmir.
Earlier, District President JKNC Baramulla Shahid Ali Shah, who was the chief guest at a cricket match played between Media Strikers and Legends 11 at Prof Showkat Ali Stadium Baramulla, said the MLA Baramulla has announced to organise a sports event in Baramulla.
“MLA Baramulla has already announced to provide funds for turf at Prof Showkat Ali Stadium. He is giving equal priority to sports so that youth stay away from drugs,” he said.
Talking to players of both the teams, Shah said it was an encouragement for youngsters and elders to see media persons and cricket legends (former renowned cricketers) giving boost to sports.
“It is encouragement for youngsters and elders equally,” he added.
During the match, Media Strikers registered a comprehensive victory over Legends 11 in a cricket match here, winning by a huge margin.
Put in to bat first, Media Strikers posted a target of 210 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
Riding on a solid opening stand, Shahid Imran played a special power-hitting innings of 31, while Shahid Nazir contributed a steady 63.
In the middle order, Shabroz Malik provided the late flourish with a superb 73 from just 30 balls, lacing his knock with 11 boundaries and two sixes, setting a massive target for Legends 11.
While chasing the target, the organisers decided that the opponent team-Legends 11 will chase only 150 runs in 15 overs. The decision was taken in view of other sporting activities scheduled at the playfield.
Chasing 150 runs, Legends 11 faltered early, losing wickets in quick succession as the Media Strikers bowling attack maintained its dominance through the innings.
The side was bowled out for 120 in 15 overs. Syed Rizwan Geelani and Junaid Bhat claimed three wickets each while Ashiq Mir claimed two wickets.
Media Strikers captain described the win as a great occasion for the team. He said every player gave his best in fielding, batting and bowling.
“It was the collective effort that secured the match. The team would stick to the same strategy in the coming matches and look to build on the momentum,” he said.
He said the game was not merely about winning or losing but about promoting sports.
“By taking time out for sports, people can not only spread a positive message but also inspire the younger generation to take up sports for their well-being,” he added.
He pointed to the growing involvement of youth in wrong practices and stressed that it is important for everyone to play their role in promoting sports.
Later, Shabroz Malik of Media Strikers was declared Man of the Match for his brilliant knock.
