A delegation of Nursing Staff from Government Medical College Baramulla met the Delegation of the 8th Central Pay Commission at SKICC Srinagar on behalf of the nursing fraternity working in all newly established Government Medical Colleges of Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory.
During the interaction, the nursing staff projected several long-pending and genuine concerns affecting the nursing community in the new GMCs of J&K. The delegation strongly highlighted the prevailing pay disparities among nursing personnel and urged the Commission to ensure uniform and just pay structures at par with other healthcare institutions across the country.
The delegation also raised the issue regarding the non-grant of Nursing Allowance and Dress Allowance to nursing staff working in newly established GMCs despite rendering round-the-clock patient care services under highly demanding and stressful conditions.
Another major issue emphasized before the Commission was the adoption of the nomenclature “Nursing Officer” in place of “Staff Nurse,” in line with modern healthcare institutions and national standards, thereby recognizing the professional dignity and evolving role of nursing personnel in patient care and healthcare delivery.
The nursing delegation further pressed for the implementation of Night Duty Allowance, Risk Allowance, and other nursing-specific benefits considering the nature of duties performed by nursing professionals, especially during emergencies, critical care management, and infectious disease exposure.
The representatives expressed hope that the 8th Central Pay Commission would sympathetically consider the legitimate demands of the nursing fraternity and take necessary measures to strengthen the morale, dignity, and welfare of nurses serving across the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. The delegation reaffirmed that nurses remain the backbone of the healthcare system and continue to serve humanity with dedication, compassion, and professionalism even under challenging circumstances.
