Over 111 tonnes of cherry from J&K transported by rail to national markets

The Jammu Railway Division, in the current season so far, has transported over 111 tonnes of J&K cherries to the national markets in different parts of the country, through SLR and VP coaches from Jammu and Katra railway stations.

Regarding this initiative, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM), Jammu, Uchit Singhal said, “Transporting Jammu and Kashmir’s cherries to the national market is a priority for the Jammu Railway Division. Transportation of more than 111 tonnes of cherries by rail is proof that farmers are placing their trust in Railways. Seating cum Luggage Rake (SLR) and Parcel Vans (VP)-based transport is not only saving time but also increasing farmers’ income.”

He said that the efforts of Northern Railway’s Jammu Division to deliver Jammu and Kashmir’s world-famous cherry to consumers across the country quickly and safely were yielding results.

“Jammu Railway Division will continue to provide special facilities and quick booking arrangements for horticulture produce in the future as well, so that the resolve of ‘Farm to Market’ can be realised,” Singhal added.

He appealed to farmers to avail maximum benefit of this railway facility for transportation of cherry and other perishable agricultural products.

Raghvender Singh, Public Relations Inspector, Jammu Railway Division shared that to ensure better prices for farmers and orchardists and reduce transportation costs, Jammu (Railway) Division was providing special rail rakes.

“For perishable products like cherry, SLR and VP coaches are being used, which ensure safe delivery in less time. Booking, loading and cold chain facilities are being provided by the Railways at Jammu and Katra railway stations, so that farmers face no inconvenience,” Singh stated.
