Srinagar–Jammu NH open for traffic

Ramban, Nov 2: The Srinagar–Jammu National Highway (NH-44) remained open for two-way traffic of passenger light and medium vehicles on Sunday.

However, only one-way movement of heavy vehicles was allowed towards Jammu.

Traffic authorities said that NH-44 would remain open on Monday as well, permitting two-way movement of light and medium vehicles and one-way movement of heavy vehicles towards Kashmir.

Earlier in the day, traffic officials monitoring the regulation of vehicular movement in Ramban informed that hundreds of light and medium vehicles plied on both sides between Jammu and Srinagar at a slow pace. Vehicles carrying official records from Kashmir to Jammu, as part of the bi-annual move of offices, also crossed safely during the day.

Officials said that traffic movement remained slow due to single-lane stretches at Balli Nullah, Dewal, between Nashri–Dalwass and between Maroog and Kishtwari Pattar. The breakdown of a few heavy vehicles and on-foot movement of nomadic families with their livestock towards Jammu also contributed to congestion.

Meanwhile, traffic authorities have issued a fresh advisory for Monday, stating that subject to fair weather and good road conditions, light and medium vehicles will be allowed to ply from both ends.

Heavy vehicles will be permitted to move towards Kashmir from Jakhani, Udhampur.

Commuters and vehicle operators have been advised to follow lane discipline and avoid overtaking or wrong-lane driving to prevent traffic jams.
