A suspect was shot dead after opening fire near the White House on Saturday evening, the US Secret Service said.

According to the agency, the incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue when an individual pulled a weapon from a bag and began firing, reports BBC.

Secret Service officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. One bystander was also injured in the shooting, BBC said.

The agency said no officers were hurt in the incident.

US President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time, but no protectees or operations were affected.

The incident remains under investigation, and officials said more information would be released as it becomes available.
