Their wheelchairs are worn, their resolve is not

Waseem Matoo, president of the J&K Wheelchair Association, told Greater Kashmir that athletes from almost all districts of Jammu and Kashmir participated in the event and showcased their sporting talent and determination despite physical challenges.

He said the event was attended by Padma Shri awardee and noted social activist Javid Ahmad Tak and Ali Mohammad Lone as the chief guests, along with volunteers and other dignitaries.

Waseem Matoo also highlighted the challenges faced by wheelchair cricketers in J&K. He said the players lack proper sports wheelchairs and often risk injuries while playing.

“Despite limited resources and financial hardships, our players continue to pursue the game with immense passion and dedication,” Matoo said.

He appealed to the government to provide proper sports wheelchairs, cricket kits and uniforms for the teams and extend financial assistance for participation in national tournaments. He noted that many players come from economically weaker backgrounds and find it difficult to bear the expenses associated with the sport.

Matoo also urged Chief Minister and Lieutenant Governor-led administration to interact with the association and provide an opportunity to present its genuine demands.
