Srinagar, Aug 11: Multi-layered and robust security arrangements have been put in place across Kashmir for the peaceful conduct of the Independence Day celebrations, the valley’s police chief, V K Birdi, said here on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters after reviewing the preparations at the Balidan Stambh here, Birdi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, said all the security arrangements have been put in place.
“The Jammu and Kashmir Police always maintains robust security arrangements not just in Srinagar city, but across various districts of the valley. Multi-layered security arrangements are in place, not only at the specific venues, but also in the areas surrounding the city,” he added.
To a question about the investigations in the recent attacks in Anantnag and Pulwama, the IGP said the investigation is ongoing.
“It is ongoing and so, it would not be appropriate for me to disclose that right now. Whenever there are such clear details or information to be shared with you, we will share them with you at an appropriate time,” he said.
He appealed to the people to participate in the Independence Day celebrations in large numbers.
“This is a public function. The police only act as a helper or organiser in this. We urge people to participate in these functions in large numbers and make them successful,” he said.
On Monday, Birdi reviewed the overall security in Kashmir and arrangements for the upcoming Independence Day celebration in the valley.
He chaired a security review meeting here to assess the security and arrangements for the Independence Day celebrations and other events scheduled across all districts of the Valley.
The meeting was attended by the IG BSF, IG CRPF, Additional Commissioner SB Srinagar and other officers of allied security agencies.
Birdi was briefed by senior officers on the security arrangements put in place. The district police heads also briefed the chair about the preparations and security arrangements being made in their respective districts with regard to Independence Day celebrations.
During the meeting, the IG directed officers to intensify area domination and patrolling, particularly in sensitive and vulnerable areas.
He also reviewed the security arrangements for the main function scheduled to be held at Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium, and directed officers to ensure preparations are completed well in advance.
The IG directed officers to further strengthen security checkpoints, particularly during night hours, at vulnerable locations and along the entry and exit routes of the city.
He had also emphasised strict vigilance against elements inimical to peace and security and called for enhanced alertness across all jurisdictions.
As part of the intensified security measures, police carried out surprise checking and frisking in Lal Chowk and other areas of the city.
