Over 9,000 pilgrims leave from Jammu for Kheer Bhawani Mela

Jammu, June 20: More than 9,000 pilgrims, mostly Kashmiri Pandits, departed from Jammu for the famed Kheer Bhawani temple in Kashmir on Saturday.

With pilgrim participation significantly higher this year, officials anticipate a substantial turnout at the Kheer Bhawani Mela, one of the most important religious events for the Kashmiri Pandit community.

The pilgrims left for the valley in 200 J&K Road Transport Corporation buses, amid elaborate security arrangements, the officials said.

The convoy was jointly flagged off by BJP MLA from Nagrota Devyani Rana, Relief Commissioner (Migrants) Arvind Karwani and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jammu-Kathua-Samba Range, Shridhar Patil.

The Kheer Bhawani Mela will be held at five Ragnya Bhagwati shrines at Tulmulla in Ganderbal, Manzgam and Devsar in Kulgam district, and Logripora in Anantnag district of south Kashmir and Tikkar in northern Kashmir’s Kupwara district on June 22.

Among these temples, the Tulmulla temple nestled in the shade of mammoth Chinar trees witnesses massive gatherings, with devotees from across the world visiting the shrine.

After ‘darshan’ at the temples on Monday, the pilgrims will return to Jammu a day later.

After flagging off the convoy, Nagrota MLA Rana told PTI, “I am delighted and deeply honoured to flag off the (convoy of) devotees for the second consecutive year. The overwhelming response to this year’s pilgrimage reflects the unwavering faith of the devotees and their enduring spiritual bond with the revered Kheer Bhawani shrine.”

“I extend my heartfelt wishes to all the pilgrims for a safe, peaceful and spiritually enriching journey. May Goddess Ragnya Devi bless them with good health, happiness and prosperity, and may their prayers bring peace and harmony to Jammu and Kashmir,” she said.

DIG Patil and Karwani said comprehensive security, transport, accommodation and medical arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth and hassle-free pilgrimage.

They said the turnout of pilgrims this year has been significantly higher than in recent years, reflecting the growing enthusiasm among devotees to participate in the annual pilgrimage.

Many pilgrims expressed happiness at being able to undertake the annual journey to the valley.

“Kheer Bhawani is not just a religious occasion, it is an emotional and spiritual connection with our roots. We pray for peace, prosperity and communal harmony in Jammu and Kashmir,” said a pilgrim, Ravinder Sadhu, before boarding the convoy.

Another pilgrim, Neelam Kumari, said she is happy to join the caravan and offer her prayers at the temple to seek blessings and pray for the prosperity of the country and J&K, besides the return of the displaced community to the valley.

Another pilgrim said the large participation this year demonstrates the deep reverence the community holds for the shrine.

“The turnout has been remarkable. It shows that despite the passage of time, our bond with the shrine and our cultural heritage remains strong,” said the pilgrim, Simran.

Neeraj finishes fourth in his season-opening event in Doha Diamond League

Neeraj finishes fourth in his season-opening event in Doha Diamond League

Doha, June 20: Forced to delay the start of his season due to an injury, Indian javelin throw ace Neeraj Chopra finished a creditable fourth in the Doha Diamond League event here.

The 28-year-old Chopra produced a best of 85.69m in his third attempt, which placed him fourth in the end in his season-opening event on Friday night.

Chopra has been hampered by a back injury which he sustained before the World Championships in Tokyo in September 2025.

He was competing here for the first time after finishing eighth in the World Championships. He has been training in Switzerland since May 25 after a rehabilitation stint in Turkey.

Rising Sri Lankan star and world leader Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the title in the star-studded field with a throw of 88.68m, while two-time world champion Andersen Peters of Grenada was second with 86.38.

American Curtis Thompson, who won a bronze in the Tokyo World Championships, was third with 85.99m.

This was the first time Chopra has not finished in top-two in a Diamond League event in the last four years.

He has been in top two in all the DL meetings he had participated since finishing second in Stockholm in June 2022 with a throw of 89.94m.

His first DL win came in Lausanne in August the same year. In Doha, he won the title in 2023, before finishing second in 2024 and 2025.

Chopra, however, breached the 82.61m qualifying distance set by the Athletics Federation of India for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

He was earlier named in the 32-member Indian team for the Glasgow CWG (July 23 to August 2).

Chopra began with a foul and was placed fourth after his second round throw of 82.77m, which sealed his 2026 Commonwealth Games berth.

He did even better in his third attempt, sending his spear to 85.69m, and jumping up one place to third.

But once the 23-year-old Pathirage took the lead with his fourth round throw of 88.68m, Chopra was pushed down to fourth place.

Pathirage, who has been in the form of his life this season, was at the fourth spot at the halfway stage, after modest throws of 82.62m, 84.63m and 80.53m.

But he proved why he is the hottest javelin thrower this season with his fourth round effort of 88.68m, which was followed up by 84.47m and 81.35m.

This was his second DL win. He had won the title in Rome earlier this month with a monster throw of 92.62m which is the currently the world leading distance.

He became only the fourth Asian and 28th overall to breach the coveted 90m mark.

He has had two more 89m-plus throws this season. He had come into the Doha DL after winning the prestigious Golden Spike meet in Ostrava, Czechia, with a throw of 86.57m.

It was Pathirage’s back to back Diamond League win, having won in Rome earlier.

“2026 has been a very good season so far, but I wasn’t able to get a massive throw today. However, I will keep trying my best and I’m glad I had a win today. I’m happy in this Doha Diamond League, it was one of my dreams to compete here as the first ever Sri Lankan in the Wanda Diamond League circuit,” Pathirage said.

For Chopra, the lengthy injury-forced absence from competition affected his rhythm, and he could not replicate his stunning performance here last year, when he breached the coveted 90m mark with a throw of 90.23m, while finishing second.

It was only the third meeting between Chopra and Pathirage and their first on the Diamond League stage.

The head-to-head record now stands 2-1 in favour of the Sri Lankan.

Chopra won gold in the NC Classic which he hosted in Bengaluru in July 2025, while Pathirage had finished third with 84.34m.

In the Tokyo World Championships last year, Chopra ended a disappointing eighth while Pathirage finished seventh 84.38m.

Govind Mohan to review final security blueprint for Amarnath Yatra at Srinagar PHQ

Govind Mohan to review final security blueprint for Amarnath Yatra at Srinagar PHQ

Srinagar, June 20: Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan is all set to arrive in Srinagar and chair a high-level security review meeting at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) here, focusing on comprehensive arrangements for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra and the overall security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Govind Mohan will land at Srinagar International Airport around 10 AM and is scheduled to return to New Delhi by 5 PM after the deliberations. The meeting is being attended by Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), General Officer Commanding (GOC) Northern Command, Director General of Police (DGP) J&K, GOCs of 15 and 16 Corps, Director General CRPF, senior officers from Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Border Security Force (BSF) including ADG CID, Inspectors General of Police for Jammu and Kashmir ranges, and other senior officers from paramilitary forces.

The high-powered meeting is reviewing the multi-layered security grid, intelligence coordination, deployment of forces, use of advanced technology, and logistical preparedness ahead of the annual pilgrimage, which is scheduled to begin on July 3, 2026, and conclude on August 28, 2026.

Senior officials in security establishment said the discussions will remain centred on ensuring zero-tolerance security along both the traditional Pahalgam and Baltal routes, as well as at the base camps (Nunwan and Baltal). Key aspects under review include area domination, route sanitization, protection of strategic heights, pilgrim screening and registration mechanisms, and real-time response capabilities.

This review follows a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on June 12, 2026, attended by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, and other top officials. The Srinagar meeting is part of the final round of ground-level fine-tuning before the 57-day Yatra.

Security forces have already intensified preparations. A massive deployment of approximately 700 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) has been approved for the Yatra. A three-tier security system is being put in place across base camps and the entire pilgrimage corridor. For the first time, the Army’s specialized Vikas Battalion — comprising troops highly trained in mountain warfare — is being deployed to secure strategic heights overlooking the Pahalgam route.

Advanced technological measures form a critical component of the security architecture. These include mandatory RFID cards (linked to Aadhaar) for all registered yatris, drone surveillance, facial recognition systems, extensive CCTV networks, surveillance towers, and real-time monitoring and alert mechanisms. The competent authority has declared the entire Yatra area a ‘No Flying Zone’ from July 1, 2026, till the conclusion of the pilgrimage. Helicopter services for pilgrims will not operate in the area during this period.

Ground-level measures already underway include large-scale mock drills, combing operations, house-to-house searches in sensitive pockets (particularly in Anantnag district), and strict verification of service providers such as pony owners through identity cards and QR codes. Hotel checks and verification of guest records in key areas have also been intensified.

Besides the Yatra-specific arrangements, the meeting is also assessing the overall security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir. The Union Territory has witnessed a significant improvement in the security environment in recent years, with a sharp decline in terror-related incidents. This has enabled greater focus on development, tourism, and facilitation of large religious and cultural events.

The review is also covering holistic aspects such as medical preparedness and emergency response teams, accommodation and tentage facilities, transport and traffic management (including strict convoy procedures), weather monitoring in coordination with IMD, and disaster management capabilities — critical given the high-altitude terrain and potential monsoon challenges during the Yatra period.

Reliance targets next growth wave through AI, satellite internet; Jio files for IPO

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani on Friday unveiled a sweeping roadmap for Reliance Industries Ltd’s next phase of growth spanning artificial intelligence, satellite broadband, clean energy and consumer businesses, as its digital unit Jio Platforms filed draft papers for what could become India’s largest-ever initial public offering.

Jio Platforms, the telecom-to-technology company that transformed India’s digital landscape over the past decade, filed a draft red herring prospectus with market regulator SEBI for a fresh issue of up to 27 crore shares. Sources familiar with the matter said the offering could raise about Rs 37,700 crore (USD 4 billion), valuing the company at roughly USD 137 billion.

“The Board of Jio Platforms has approved the Draft Red Herring Prospectus earlier today, and it will be filed with SEBI today,” Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani told shareholders at the company’s 49th annual general meeting. Shortly after Ambani ended his speech, the DRHP was filed with stock exchanges and market regulator SEBI.

Describing the proposed listing as a landmark moment for the group, Ambani said, “The proposed listing of Jio will demonstrate to the world that India can build technology companies of global scale, global capability, and global value.”

Ambani said the IPO process is being led by his three children – Akash Ambani, Isha Ambani and Anant Ambani – who are increasingly taking charge of the conglomerate’s key businesses.

The offering aims to unlock value from Jio Platforms, whose telecom arm has grown into the world’s second-largest mobile operator by subscribers in a single country after China Mobile.

As of March 31, Reliance Jio served 524.4 million subscribers, including 268.5 million users on its 5G network.

Jio Platforms reported a revenue of Rs 1.47 lakh crore and profit after tax of about Rs 30,000 crore in FY26. The company counts Meta and Google among its largest strategic investors, alongside a roster of global financial backers, including KKR, Silver Lake, Mubadala, ADIA and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

Beyond the IPO, Ambani used the annual meeting to outline what he described as Reliance’s next generation of growth engines, with artificial intelligence emerging as a central pillar.
