J-K man posing as NIA officer to dupe job-seekers held from Red Fort area

New Delhi, Feb 19: A man from Jammu and Kashmir was apprehended by Delhi Police near Red Fort for allegedly posing as an officer of a central agency and cheating economically vulnerable families on the pretext of providing jobs, an official said on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Mudassar, a resident of Pulwama, was intercepted during patrolling by a team from Kotwali police station.

Police said a black Hyundai Santro car bearing a Jammu and Kashmir registration number was found parked under suspicious circumstances near Delhi Chalo Park behind the Red Fort.

Officers found Mudassar and a minor inside the car.

“When questioned, Mudassar produced an identity card similar to that issued by the National Investigation Agency. The card appeared suspicious and both were brought to the police station for detailed questioning,” a senior police officer said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had allegedly been targeting economically vulnerable families in Jammu and Kashmir by promising employment in Delhi in exchange for money, he said.

“Mudassar had assured the minor boy’s family of arranging a job for him and taken an advance payment before bringing him to Delhi,” the officer added.

Police said they left Kashmir on February 12 and reached Delhi on the night of February 13, and were staying at a guest house in the Jama Masjid area. The accused claimed he has contacted some people to arrange for a job for the minor but failed to produce any documentary proof.

Joint interrogation with the Special Cell, Intelligence Bureau and the central agency concerned established that the identity card was forged and no such card had been issued.

A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, police said.

UN Security Council holds high-level meeting on Gaza before Trump’s Board of Peace convenes

UN Security Council holds high-level meeting on Gaza before Trump’s Board of Peace convenes

United Nations, Feb 19: The UN Security Council is holding a high-level meeting Wednesday on the Gaza ceasefire deal and Israel’s efforts to expand control in the West Bank before world leaders head to Washington to discuss the future of the Palestinian territories at the first gathering of President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace.

The UN session in New York was originally scheduled for Thursday but was moved up after Trump announced the board’s meeting for that same date and it became clear that it would complicate travel plans for diplomats planning to attend both. It is a sign of the potential for overlapping and conflicting agendas between the United Nations’ most powerful body and Trump’s new initiative, whose broader ambitions to broker global conflicts have raised concerns in some countries that it may attempt to rival the UN Security Council.

Asked what he hopes to see from the back-to-back meetings this week, Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour told reporters Tuesday, “We expect from the international community to stop Israel and end their illegal effort against annexation, whether in Washington or in New York.”

The foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, Israel, Jordan, Egypt and Indonesia, among others, are in attendance at the monthly Mideast meeting of the 15-member council after many Arab and Islamic countries requested last week that it discuss Gaza and Israel’s contentious West Bank settlement project before some of them head to Washington.

The board to be chaired by Trump was originally envisioned as a small group of world leaders overseeing his 20-point plan for Gaza’s future. But the Republican president’s ambitious new vision for the board to be a mediator of worldwide conflicts has led to skepticism from major allies.

While more than 20 countries have so far accepted an invitation to join the board, close US partners, including France, Germany and others, have opted not to join yet and renewed support for the UN, which also is in the throes of major reforms and funding cuts.

Mike Waltz, the US ambassador to the UN, dismissed concerns about the composition of the Board of Peace, telling conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt in an interview Monday that the most relevant countries, including Qatar and Egypt, which are in touch with Hamas’ leadership, have accepted the invitation.

“All of those countries are on the Board of Peace, singing the same tune as the United States,” he said.

The Security Council is be meeting a day after nearly all of its 15 members — minus the United States — and dozens of other diplomats joined Palestinian ambassador Mansour as he read a statement on behalf of 80 countries and several organizations condemning Israel’s latest actions in the West Bank, demanding an immediate reversal and underlining “strong opposition to any form of annexation.”

Israel, whose UN mission did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Wednesday’s meeting, is launching a contentious land regulation process that will deepen its control in the occupied West Bank. Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen said it amounts to “de facto sovereignty” that will block the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Outraged Palestinians, Arab countries and human rights groups have called the moves an illegal annexation of the territory, home to roughly 3.4 million Palestinians who seek it for a future state.

The UN meeting also is expected to delve into the US-brokered ceasefire deal that took effect Oct. 10 after more than two years of war between Israel and Hamas. The UK, which currently holds the presidency of the council, said the meeting will include briefings by UN political chief Rosemary DiCarlo and by Israeli and Palestinian civil society representatives for the first time since the Oct. 7 attacks.

Aspects of the ceasefire deal have moved forward, including Hamas releasing all the hostages it was holding and increased amounts of humanitarian aid getting into Gaza, though the UN says the level is insufficient. A new technocratic committee has been appointed to administer Gaza’s daily affairs.

But the most challenging steps lie ahead, including the deployment of an international security force, disarming Hamas and rebuilding Gaza.

Trump said this week that the Board of Peace members have pledged $5 billion toward Gaza reconstruction and will commit thousands of personnel to international stabilization and police forces for the territory. He didn’t provide details. Indonesia’s military says up to 8,000 of its troops are expected to be ready by the end of June for a potential deployment to Gaza as part of a humanitarian and peace mission.

Srinagar, Feb 18: In a significant move to modernise safety protocols within the tourism sector, Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) and the Jammu & Kashmir Police jointly inaugurated a two-week training programme on ‘Tech-Infused Tourism Policing’ in Srinagar.

The initiative aims to enhance the professional capacity of police personnel in managing tourist safety and crisis situations through advanced technological tools.

Welcoming the participants, Mahesh A Tripathi, Director, RRU J&K Campus, outlined the vision of the initiative and emphasized that the curriculum has been designed to address emerging security challenges in the tourism sector through technological integration.

He highlighted that RRU, an Institution of National Importance, provides specialised security training to personnel from across India and several countries.

The initiative aims to equip police personnel with the necessary skills to manage the unique security challenges of high-footfall areas.

The programme was inaugurated by Shah Umer, Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, who emphasised that tourism policing has become a critical component of internal security in the modern era.

During his inaugural address, Umer noted that the evolving security dynamics and the steady increase in tourist inflows necessitate a proactive shift in law enforcement strategies.

He asserted that police personnel must continuously upskill and adopt modern technologies to ensure better preparedness for future challenges.

The programme reflects the commitment of the Jammu and Kashmir Police to evolve operational practices in alignment with international standards of tourist safety.

The introductory session was led by Bilquees Dar, who provided a comprehensive overview of the curriculum.

The training is designed to cover essential themes, including tech-enabled policing tools, crisis response mechanisms, and the vital importance of inter-agency coordination.

Bilquees highlighted that these elements are particularly crucial for maintaining stability in sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir, where tourism serves as a backbone for the local economy.

The training will involve various modules focusing on the intersection of technology and field operations, ensuring that officers are not only reactive but also preventive in their approach to security.

As the region continues to see record-breaking tourist numbers, this initiative marks a pivotal step in ensuring that the safety of visitors remains a top priority for the administration.

During the keynote session, Bhawani Sinh Rathore, Director of the School of Internal Security and SMART Policing (SISSP) at Rashtriya Raksha University, provided a strategic outlook on the economic impact of the industry.

He noted that tourism has emerged as one of the fastest-growing global industries and a vital pillar of national revenue.

Highlighting Indiaís rising global stature, Rathore stated that India currently ranks among the top 15 tourism destinations worldwide, a position that necessitates the implementation of robust, world-class tourist safety mechanisms to sustain growth and international trust.

Further deliberations featured insights from Syed Sleet Shah, DySP Hqrs Srinagar, who highlighted critical operational issues such as the safety of female tourists, service regulation, and the prevention of overcharging.

The sessions also focused on “image management” for the police force, ensuring that security personnel act as facilitators for a positive tourist experience while maintaining rigorous safety standards.

This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of Rashtriya Raksha University to provide specialised training that aligns with the evolving security needs of Indiaís most sensitive regions.

During the training programme’s inauguration, key recommendations were proposed to strengthen the tourism sector, including strengthening coordination with trade associations, regulating transport services, and deploying GPS-enabled systems; additionally, the proposals emphasised forming tourist crisis intervention teams, increasing the visibility of tourist police offices, and tasking Rashtriya Raksha University with developing a dedicated tourist assistance mobile application.

The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks from Mohammad Akmal Shah, Assistant Director of the Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) J&K Campus, who expressed his gratitude to the dignitaries, organisers, participants, and supporting agencies for their contributions to the program’s successful commencement.

This programme represents a significant step in RRUís mission to provide high-level security education that translates into actionable public safety improvements.

By fostering collaboration between academic experts and field practitioners, the university continues to lead the way in national security and tourism stability.

Not aware if statehood will come after consultations with CM: Sunil Sharma

Not aware if statehood will come after consultations with CM: Sunil Sharma

Jammu, Feb 18: Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the J&K Legislature Sunil Sharma on Wednesday, in a mild dig at his political opponent, stated that he was not aware if the statehood would be restored to J&K after consultations with the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

“Yes, we too have no doubt about it that the J&K statehood will come. However, will that (statehood) come after Omar Abdullah Sahib’s consent – this I don’t know…Whether this process (of restoration of statehood) has begun after holding consultations with him (Omar)…I’m not aware. If he (Omar) says so then it is a good thing,” LoP replied, when asked to comment on the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s statement that the process of restoration was underway and the government was holding consultations with the Centre on that account.

He was responding to media queries outside the J&K Legislature.

Responding to another query, Sunil Sharma alleged, “Every section of society is suffering during the rule of Omar Abdullah government. Not just retirees, even the serving employees, are feeling harassed. The employees, who want their GP Fund for the marriage of their children, are standing in long queues. The Finance Department is headed by the Chief Minister and he also admits that the Government of India is generous in doling out finances to J&K. But the result is zero on the ground.”

Taking a dig at his political opponents, LoP mocked, “Without any vision or purpose, the Omar-government is running. In fact, its functioning has been totally left at God’s mercy. However, they (helmsmen), themselves, are enjoying to the hilt, pursuing all their leisure pursuits – golfing, skiing, cycling, jogging. They are busy in that but on the ground, the situation is dismal. Just have a glimpse of their capital expenditure, which could have been used to create jobs. Capex has not been increased. Omar Abdullah Sahib had promised to provide jobs to the unemployed within three months. Those jobs have been sold out. They have been outsourced to a company, which can be blacklisted.”

He alleged that eighty percent of the money flow from the Government of India was put into revenue expenditure, still retirees and in-service employees were waiting for their money.

“There is total chaos prevailing. There is no financial transparency here and for which the people of J&K will have to pay a heavy price,” he said.

With regard to a question about the National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah, Sunil Sharma said, “Farooq Sahib would change his statement in a jiffy, as per his convenience. He has cheated the people and the country. One cannot rely on his statement and his track record establishes it.”

MLA Tanvir Sadiq alleges bias in Government Ads to media

Srinagar, Feb 18: Member of the Legislative Assembly Tanvir Sadiq on Wednesday accused the administration of discriminating against sections of the local media by selectively withholding government advertisements, and called for a transparent and uniform advertising policy.

Raising the issue in the Assembly, Tanvir Sadiq said several reputed newspapers and media channels in Jammu and Kashmir have allegedly been denied government advertisements for years, placing them under severe financial strain.

Describing government advertisements as “not charity,” he said they are institutional mechanisms meant to disseminate public information. “If they are distributed selectively, it creates an uneven playing field and raises serious concerns,” he told the House.

He said the issue was not merely about revenue but reflected deeper policy flaws affecting the media sector. “Official advertisements are a critical revenue stream for media organisations. Withholding them impacts operations and sustainability,” he said.

Calling the free press a pillar of democracy, Sadiq asserted that media houses should not be treated as adversaries. “Financially punishing media organisations, whether directly or indirectly, undermines public trust,” he added.

Seeking greater transparency, he demanded that the government disclose the criteria being followed for empanelment and allocation of advertisements. He also questioned the distribution of advertisements to what he described as obscure and lesser-known publications, naming several such outlets during his address, which drew laughter in the House.

Sadiq further urged the government to review the Media Policy 2020, alleging that it allows for arbitrary and unjustified distribution of advertisements.

In addition, he called for the introduction of a pension scheme for journalists, citing the lack of job security in the profession. “Media persons have no security of tenure. The government must consider including them in a pension scheme to safeguard their livelihoods,” he said.
