Defence exports skyrocket to record Rs 38,424 crore in Financial Year 2025-26, a massive 62.66% increase over previous fiscal

New Delhi, Apr 02: Defence exports have touched an all-time high of Rs 38,424 crore in the Financial Year (FY) 2025-26, marking a massive rise of Rs 14,802 crore (62.66%) over the previous fiscal year’s figure of Rs 23,622 crore.

In this landmark milestone, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and the private sector have contributed 54.84% and 45.16% respectively. This accomplishment of the Indian defence industry is in line with the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision to position India among the world’s top defence exporters.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has lauded this exemplary performance of the Department of Defence Production, Indian defence exporters & all other stakeholders and asserted that India is marching ahead towards becoming a global manufacturing hub for defence equipment. In a post on X, Raksha Mantri stated that under the inspiring leadership of PM Modi, India is scripting an impressive defence exports success story.

DPSUs’ exports surged by 151% compared to the previous year, with private firms showcasing their robust presence by recording an increase of 14%. In terms of value of contribution, the private sector accounted for Rs 17,353 crore worth of defence exports, while DPSUs contributed Rs 21,071 crore. Their respective figures in the previous financial year stood at Rs 15,233 crore and Rs 8,389 crore.

This record high figure indicates an increase by around three times in the last five years.

This sharp rise highlights the increasing global acceptance of Indian made defence products and the sector’s growing integration into the international supply chains. Apart from being a successful global partner for systems/sub-systems, India is exporting defence equipment to more than 80 countries as of FY 2025-26. The number of exporters underwent a surge to 145 from 128, a 13.3% rise from the previous fiscal.

The Government’s continuous endeavours towards ease of doing business and facilitation of defence exporters have paved the way for a performance oriented and globally competitive defence industry. To support defence exporters in this growth trajectory, the Department of Defence Production has streamlined defence export regulatory processes with a revamped online portal and simplified Standard Operation Procedure for authorisations.

PDP MLA lauds CM Omar, calls for support on key bill

Jammu, Apr 02: PDP MLA from Tral, Rafiq Ahmad Naik, on Thursday praised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for addressing public grievances, while urging political parties to rise above differences on important legislation.

Speaking during the proceedings, Naik said the Chief Minister has taken the lead in resolving several issues faced by the public.

He expressed gratitude for the government’s responsiveness, saying such efforts deserve acknowledgment irrespective of political affiliations.

He said he would continue to raise the concerns of his constituents to ensure timely redressal, adding that appreciation should not come at the cost of accountability.

Referring to a bill moved by Minister Sakina Itoo, the legislator termed it significant and called on members across party lines to support it. He stressed that crucial legislation should not fall victim to political rivalry.

“Opposing meaningful bills sends a negative signal and weakens democratic functioning,” he added. —(KNO)

Deputy CM seeks return of power projects from NHPC, flags cost of power purchases

Jammu, April 02: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chowdhary on Thursday called for the return of hydropower projects from NHPC Ltd to Jammu and Kashmir, stating that control over local water resources should rest with the people of the Union Territory.

Chowdhary while talking to reporters, said Jammu and Kashmir continues to bear a financial burden by purchasing electricity despite having significant hydropower potential.

“Water resources are ours, everything is ours, and still we are forced to buy power,” he said, emphasizing the need for greater control over local projects.

The remarks come amid a growing political debate over ownership and benefits of hydropower assets in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly as new projects continue to be developed under central agencies.

Chowdhary said that while there is a general consensus that Jammu and Kashmir should become self-sufficient in power generation, the current model has not achieved that goal.

“Everyone says J&K should be self-sufficient. Unfortunately, despite our projects, we still have to buy power. If you see how much we spend on purchasing electricity, you will be surprised,” he added.

Earlier, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legislator Waheed Ur Rehman Parra criticized the government for handing over two hydropower projects to NHPC Ltd.

Parra said the 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II and 260 MW Dulhasti Stage-II projects, with a combined capacity of 500 MW, had been transferred to NHPC, raising concerns over limited local benefits and long-term control.

He had questioned the power-sharing arrangement and the broader implications for Jammu and Kashmir’s energy autonomy. [KNT]

UK gathers more than 30 countries to plot ways of reopening Strait of Hormuz

UK gathers more than 30 countries to plot ways of reopening Strait of Hormuz

London, Apr 02:  Almost three dozen countries will meet Thursday in an effort to exert diplomatic and political pressure to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route that has been choked off by the US-Israeli war against Iran.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the virtual meeting chaired by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper “will assess all viable diplomatic and political measures we can take to restore freedom of navigation, guarantee the safety of trapped ships and seafarers and to resume the movement of vital commodities”.

Iranian attacks on commercial ships, and the threat of more, have halted nearly all traffic in the waterway that connects the Persian Gulf to the rest of the globe’s oceans, shutting a critical path for the world’s flow of oil and sending petroleum prices soaring.

The US is not among the countries attending Thursday’s meeting. Trump has said securing the waterway is not America’s job, and told US allies to “go get your own oil”.

No country appears willing to try and open the strait by force while fighting rages and Iran can target vessels with anti-ship missiles, drones, attack craft and mines. But Starmer said Wednesday that military planners from an unspecified number of countries will meet soon to work on how to ensure security for shipping “after the fighting has stopped”.

In the meantime, 35 countries including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan and the United Arab Emirates have signed a statement demanding Iran stop its attempts to block the strait and pledging to “contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage” through the waterway.

Thursday’s meeting is considered a first step, to be followed by “working-level meetings” of officials to hammer out details.

Starmer said resuming shipping “will not be easy,” and will require “a united front of military strength and diplomatic activity” alongside partnership with the maritime industry.

The international effort idea has echoes of the international “coalition of the willing” that has been assembled, led by the UK and France, to underpin Ukraine’s security after a future ceasefire in that war.

The coalition is, in part, an attempt to demonstrate to the Trump administration that Europe is stepping up to do more for its own security.

The urgency of stronger continental defences has been reinforced by Trump’s renewed suggestion that the US could pull out of NATO.

J&K Govt hands over two new hydropower projects with 500 MW capacity to NHPC; J&K to get just 12% electricity: Para

Srinagar, Apr 02: Peoples Democratic Party leader Waheed Ur Rehman Para on Thursday revealed that the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has handed over two new hydropower projects–240 MW Uri-I Stage-II and 260 MW Dulhasti Stage-II projects, with a combined capacity of 500 MW– to National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) under an agreement signed between NHPC Ltd and JKSPDCL this year on March 27.

According to the PDP MLA, J&K, under the terms of the MoU, is entitled to over 12 per cent of the electricity generated from NHPC-operated projects. The rest of the electricity, he said, will be transferred to the power grid from which the J&K government buys at market rates to bridge the energy deficit.

Para said the projects will be executed under the BOOT model for 40 years before being transferred back to the UT

In a post on X, Para wrote, “As assembly session continues. J&K govt has handed over two new hydropower projects to NHPC.”

“An agreement has been signed between NHPC Ltd and JKSPDCL to develop the 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II and 260 MW Dulhasti Stage-II projects, with a total capacity of 500 MW. The projects will be executed under the BOOT model for 40 years before being transferred back to the UT. The agreement was signed on March 27, 2026, in Jammu.” He added.

“Under the terms of the MoU, J&K is entitled to over 12 per cent of the electricity generated from NHPC-operated projects. The rest is transferred to the power grid from which the J&K government buys at market rates to bridge the energy deficit.” He continued.

“In 2006, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh set up working groups on Jammu and Kashmir on economic development led by former Reserve Bank of India Governor C. Rangarajan. The group recommended the transfer of Dulhasti and Bursar projects to Jammu and Kashmir, but the request was not heeded.” He said.

“It was followed by a cabinet sub-committee set up by the then National Conference (NC)-led government in 2011 to examine the terms under which hydroelectric projects were shifted to NHPC. The panel recommended the development of the Uri-II project by the state government after the ownership transfer. Also, it put a condition for the construction of the Dulhasti Hydro Project II, subject to the transfer of ownership of the Dulhasti Stage-I project to the state.” He concluded the post.
